Abstract:
Private equity (PE) stands out significantly in the world as one of the main development tools of the capital market in emerging economies and alternative sources of finance for companies. Particularly, the increase in fund value and continuous returns are objects of intense study in Brazil. The paper aims to find determinants to Brazilian private equity returns, regarding three relevant variables funds characteristics and GDP to a macroeconomic view. A sample of 1,112 PE funds registered at the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) was used and analyzed by three main variables: period of establishment, equity size, and exclusivity as possible determinants of funds’ performance using multiple regression model and fourth variable GDP is applied as a descriptive variable. The results indicate that older funds had a return premium of 1.5% monthly over young funds, smaller funds had a return premium of 1.4% over larger funds, and exclusivity does not influence the funds’ performance. Thus, the paper provides a basis for the relevant factors that an investor should verify in Brazil’s private equity fund before allocating the resources.

I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the role of information on the promotion of political accountability using empirical analysis of data from Brazil. The first chapter investigates whether the use of participatory budgeting (an alternative budgetary process that gives citizens the ability to interact with the elected politicians in the drafting of the local budget) in Brazilian municipalities has affected the pattern of public expenditures and had any impact on living conditions. By analysing a panel of Brazilian municipalities between 1990 and 2004 I show that the municipalities that used this participatory mechanism favoured an allocation of expenditures that closely matched the "popular preferences", channelling a larger fraction of their budgets to key investments in sanitation and health services, and registered a pronounced reduction in the infant mortality rates. The second chapter analyses the impact of an Internet-based information dissemination campaign about political candidates' criminal records launched in Brazil in 2006 on that same year's election results. Using difference-in-difference estimates around the information release date, I find that politicians with criminal records register a significantly worse electoral performance once that information is revealed to the electorate through the Internet campaign. This suggests that voters do value and make use of information that allows them to distinguish the "crooks" from the law-abiding politicians at the time of the election. The third chapter complements this analysis by investigating the effects of the information campaign on the elected politicians' detected criminal behaviour. By inspecting the lawsuits brought against Brazilian politicians in two different terms, before and after the Internet campaign, I find suggestive evidence of the existence of both selection and discipline effects of the information campaign on the politicians' criminal propensity and behaviour. Greater access to information seems to enhance accountability by improving the selection of politicians and by disciplining their behaviour while in office.

Abstract: Aphroditiformia, or scale worms, can be differentiated from other polychaete because of their overlapping scales on the dorsal surface of the body. This group include seven families: Acoetidae, Aphroditidae, Eulepethidae, Polynoidae, Iphionidae, Pholoidae and Sigalionidae. The elytra are homologous to the dorsal cirri and are present in some of the segments of the polychaete, alternating to cirri. These structures play a role on the respiration of the animals and are of utmost importance for the taxonomy of the group. The scale-worms are benthic animals, occurring in virtually all marine habitats and have diverse lifestyles, however, the knowledge of these families remains quite restricted. Worldwide, there are about 270 genera and 1300 described species, while in Brazil only 86 scale worms species were recorded. In this context, this study aimed to (a) the taxonomic study of scale worms species of the families Pholoidae, Eulepethidae and Sigalionidae from specimens collected by HABITATS/Petrobras, REVIZEE - South Score/Benthos and BIOTA/FAPESP - Marine Benthos projects; and (b) the bathymetric distribution of species from six scale worms families (except Iphionidae) from the Southeast Brazil. Taxonomically, 1931 individuals belonging to 15 genera and 20 species were analyzed. Among these, 4 genera are new records for the Brazilian coast, 5 species are new records for the South Atlantic Ocean and 5 species are new to science. Bathymetric analysis showed that about 83% of the scale worms occurred in shallow waters, down to 160 m depth. The deep sea (160-2500 m ) showed a lower number of individuals and species and a higher rate of endemism; 89% of the species in these areas were found exclusively at great depths
Mestrado
Ecologia
Mestra em Ecologia

Abstract:
This thesis contains three essays. In the first essay, I examine whether a temporary policy can affect long-run house hold behavior. I look at evidence from a nine-month compulsory rationing imposed on Brazilian households’ electricity use in 2001, exploiting differences in the policy’s implementation across regions as a quasi-experiment to test its short-and long-run impacts on households’ electricity consumption patterns. I find that the rationing program led to a persistent reduction in electricity use of 14% even ten years later. Unique household level microdata on appliance ownership and consumption habits suggest that the main source of persistence is changes in the utilization of electricity services, rather than technology adoption. In the second essay, we examine the effects of China’s recent emergence into the world economy in local labour markets in Brazil. Much of the literature have viewed China as a competitor. However, China is also an increasingly large consumer of goods produced abroad, and an increasing share of its import demand is for primary goods. Using census data, we compare trends in migration, unemployment, employment structure (primary/manufacturing/services), informality and participation on Bolsa Família program in areas affected by the ‘China competition shock’ and the ‘China demand shock’. We find significant and heterogeneous effects from these two ‘shocks’. In the third essay, we employ an unified theoretical framework to structurally estimate the effect of changes within China on the production in Brazil and in the rest of the world. Based on the Ricardian model of trade of Costinot et al. (2012), we perform counterfactuals exercises to analyze how countries and industries in Brazil would have performed in the absence of the recent Chinese ascension. Results suggest that changes in China’s comparative advantage hampered manufacturing sector abroad. We find no support for the idea of China demand (taste) shock towards raw materials.

Using a unique data set of central government expenditure on advertising in Brazil, we shed light on the behavior of public advertisers and the relation between government ads and voting. In particular, we investigate political motivations behind the allocation of the advertisement budget by the federal government and its impacts on voting. Borrowing insights from the literature of distributive politics, we first correlate ad money and votes for the government s party on the local level. Next, we exploit plausible exogenous variation on radio signal coverage to test if money spent on ads turn into votes for the government s party. Our findings show that although past presidential election outcomes predict where in the territory the government places ads, voters do not seem to be persuaded by those ads to favor the party in power.

Abstract:
This paper looks at misallocation effects of earmarked credit in the Brazilian Economy. This is a very important topic in Brazil, where the proportion of credit earmarked for specific types of loans reach about 40% of total credit. The earmarking rules are likely to generate distortions in loan\'s prices, producing differences in marginal returns to inputs across firms and sectors, and therefore misallocation of resources. Using a heterogeneous agents in continuous time model, we are able to study distributional effects of such policies and explore some computational advantages to solve the model. Furthermore, we calibrate such model using Brazilian credit microdata statistics linking firm size and loans. Additionally, we will verify how these earmarked resources interact with credit constraints that are probably present in the Brazilian economy

This dissertation documents a striking relationship: crime appears to induce savings. While the crime literature has focused the determinants of crime, we study the reverse question: how does crime affect economic decisions? This question is interesting and important, for key economic variables can be influenced by crime. Using Brazilian city level data, we find that high crime cities also have high savings rates. The results are robust to endogeneity of crime, different measures of savings, and a large set of demographic controls. Furthermore, this pattern only arises when property crime is considered, which is consistent with the theory developed in the second chapter of this thesis.

Recent studies estimate that eligibility for unemployment insurance program raises layoff probability by 12 per cent in Brazil. This paper develops a partial equilibrium model where workers search for jobs and might quit them in order to collect UI benefits. We calibrate it using data from Brazil and use it to assess the consequences of this behavior on firmspecific human capital accumulation and labor productivity in the economy. Through counterfactual exercises, we find that a stricter job tenure eligibility threshold would raise the average wage, the job tenure, but also the turnover rate. We discuss this last result and conclude that it depends on how the policy modifies the fraction of employed workers who voluntarily separate from their jobs. In another exercise, we find a negative relationship between the change in the UI replacement rate and the average employment duration.

Abstract:
Brazil’s sugarcane industry has been characterized by low efficiency in energy production as it consumes large amounts of bagasse as fuel in its cogeneration system, considering its low price and abundance. The possibility of selling surplus electricity to the grid has motivated investments in improvements, such as reduction of steam demand by means of process thermal integration and double distillation systems, and employment of condensing instead of back pressure steam turbines. Four different cogeneration systems were analyzed in this work: two traditional Rankine Cycles, the first presenting back pressure steam turbine and the second featuring condensing steam turbine configuration; a BIGCC (Biomass Gasification Combined Cycle) and an altered model of the BIGCC, comprised by an extra gas turbine set operating with ethanol. Thermoeconomic analyses determining exergy based costs of electricity and ethanol for all cases were carried out. The main objective of this work is to assess the proposal to maximize electricity production from the sugarcane industry in Brazil.
