This thesis studies the role of information on the promotion of political accountability using empirical analysis of data from Brazil. The first chapter investigates whether the use of participatory budgeting (an alternative budgetary process that gives citizens the ability to interact with the elected politicians in the drafting of the local budget) in Brazilian municipalities has affected the pattern of public expenditures and had any impact on living conditions. This thesis contains three essays. In the ﬁrst essay, I examine whether a temporary policy can aﬀect long-run house hold behavior. I look at evidence from a nine-month compulsory rationing imposed on Brazilian households’ electricity use in 2001, exploiting diﬀerences in the policy’s implementation across regions as a quasi-experiment to test its short-and long-run impacts on households’ electricity consumption patterns. This dissertation presents empirical evidence on the effects of compulsory voting laws on the consumption of TV news. The main goal of affirmative action (AA) policies is to give opportunities otherwise nonexistent to minorities and underprivileged students. In this paper, I investigate whether the introduction of a college affirmative action policy enables AA beneficiaries to obtain a career in Law and to catch up with high scoring candidates who did not get admitted due to the policy (i.e., displaced candidates). It focuses on a stalagmite from Pau DAlho cave (15°1220S, 56°4841W) located in Rosário dOeste, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. This speleothem grew during the past 1355 years, with average growth rate of ~168 mm/ka and encompasses two key events in the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM), the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA), major dry and wet, respectively. The Caraiba copper-rich hypersthenite-norite complex in the Early Proterozoic Curaca terrane of northern Bahia, Brazil, is not a tholeiitic layered sill as has been previously suggested. It is re-interpreted as a series of multiple dyke-like intrusions, possibly derived through partial melting of an incompatible element enriched harzburgitic to orthopyroxenitic lithospheric mantle source region.
