Abstract:
<p>Background: To be competitive on the global market companies see a chance to achieve success by using suppliers that can offer them the lowest prices. Because of low wages China is one of those countries that can offer very competitive prices for purchasers in our part of the world. But is global sourcing for everyone? Global sourcing can be proven to be more costly than anticipated if the total cost of ownership is not considered.</p><p>Research questions: -Which costs do the investigated manufacturing companies consider in their estimation of costs when purchasing from China, and how do these estimations match up with the actual costing?</p><p>-What is the explanation of potential differences between the estimation of costs and the actual costing?</p><p>-How do the companies’ characteristics in terms of experience, size and product characteristic affect the formulation of the costing?</p><p>Purpose: This thesis will investigate what kind of costs companies take into consideration when doing their estimation of costs before initiating trade with China. Further the thesis will study how these estimations match up with the actual costing that can be seen afterwards and investigate what the explanation of potential variations could depend on. The thesis will also answer how the characteristics of the companies and the products affect the costing development.</p><p>Conclusions: The companies are mainly focusing on purchase price and costs for transportation in their estimation of costs and the match between the estimation of costs and the actual costing are good in terms of purchase price and costs for transportation. Other costs are mismatched or overlooked probably because of their complexity to estimate. Product characteristics are probably the main factor that affects the complexity and amount of time and effort companies spend on costing.</p>

Abstract:
The radical change in China's economic structure over the last thirty years has influenced the global economy. The rapid development of the country and the opening of the market have stimulated international trade, intensifying the flow of trade and the processes of importing and exporting with the rest of the world. Today, besides being a world leader in the commercial sector thanks to its unlimited supply of goods and services at competitive prices, China is also the promoter of huge initiatives that involve even more continents. The Chinese dragon encourages cooperation with many countries, including Italy, with the aim of carrying out the projects it has in mind and fortifying even more relationships. The paper underlines the current trade relations between China and Italy, emphasizing the import process from China into Italy. The aim of this thesis is to outline all the dynamics, procedures and documents needed to successfully import goods from China. In addition to the description of the practical and logistical aspects, the costs to be borne and the impact on the working capital invested are analyzed from an economic and financial point of view, evaluating the related risks. Finally it is important to understand if, despite the attractive prices offered by the market, it is advisable to buy in China.

Shi, Henry Xiang. "Entrepreneurship in family business: evidence from China." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/19494.

Full text
Abstract:
This research advocates the evolution of family business and entrepreneurship studies. Focusing on second-generation Chinese family businesses, it has investigated how their entrepreneurial processes are influenced by their family attributes, which leads to different outcomes. Two major constructs were operationalised. First, the notion of "familiness", coined in prior literature to represent the "family side" of a business, was reviewed and conceptualised on three dimensions, namely business objectives, resources, and decision-making, each having five sub-dimensions. By examining business practices on these dimensions and sub-dimensions, "familiness" of given businesses was captured, which located the businesses on a continuum between a family orientation pole and a market orientation pole. Second, entrepreneurial processes were referred to as the creation of an opportunity, which was exploited by organisational means and resulted in market outcomes. Existing business resources determined whether the entrepreneurial processes were internally or externally-oriented. Innovations were treated as both outcomes and validating criteria of the entrepreneurial processes. Three types of innovation were identified, depending on their relevance to the existing business, namely discontinuous, dynamically continuous, and continuous. This research employed a qualitative, case study approach, and semi-structured interviews were undertaken at eight small to medium-sized family businesses in eastern China. The findings support established literature which argues that there is a positive relationship between family orientation, internally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and continuous innovation. On the other hand, the research indicates that the individual-level transgenerational effects of "familiness" have a significant impact on entrepreneurial processes of second-generation Chinese family businesses. With such an impact, market-oriented businesses do not implement the most externally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and produce dynamically continuous innovations; while businesses with a hybrid combination of family orientation and market orientation implement the most externally-oriented entrepreneurial processes, and discontinuous innovations. In general, this research has made conceptual and theoretical contributions by suggesting a multi-dimensional notion of "familiness", which includes an individual-level component. In addition, a dual-level approach has been proposed for studies on entrepreneurship in family businesses, emphasising both firm processes and the role of the owner-manager. Implications have been indicated for business practitioners and policy-makers as well.

Liu, Jun, and 刘俊. "Middle Triassic mixosaurid ichthyosaurs from SW China." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/211049.

Full text
Abstract:
Mixosaurid ichthyosaurs (mixosaurs) are a dominant group of Middle Triassic marine reptiles that was widely distributed in both Tethyan and Panthalassic terranes. They are represented by many excellently preserved specimens from all around the world and have been studied for more than one hundred years. Even so, their morphology is not adequately known. The systematics of mixosaurs is not well understood and their phylogeny has been controversial. The nomination of several Chinese mixosaurs makes the situation even worse. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive review of Chinese mixosaurs and discuss their phylogenetic relationships. The detailed anatomy of only valid Chinese mixosaurid species Mixosaurus panxianensis is well established in this thesis. Its ontogenetic changes are also noted and a better diagnosis is given. A new morphotype of mixosaurs from a recently discovered fossil Lagerst?tte, the Luoping biota, is described in detail. This morphotype is similar to M. panxianensis but consistent differences are also present. The ecological comparison to M. panxianensis demonstrates that this morphotype represents a new taxon that is different from M. panxianensis. A nearly complete and articulated specimen of Phalarodon atavus from the Middle Triassic Luoping biota, Yunnan, South China is described. This is the first specimen of P. atavus discovered outside the Germanic Basin. The discovery of this specimen demonstrates a cosmopolitan distribution of P. atavus across the whole Tethyan ocean. The new specimen is also the first one preserving the postcranial anatomy of this species, providing the potential to evaluate its swimming ability for the first time. Functional morphology shows that this species is well adapted for a pursuit attack of prey, consistent with the distribution pattern of the species. Tooth crown morphology suggests that P. atavus may prefer externally soft prey such as belemnoids. Mixosaurs are divided into three ontogenetic stages based on the humeral morphology. The juvenile stage is characterized by a textured dorsal humeral shaft surface. The subadult stage is characterized by a smooth humeral shaft in dorsal view with a rugose humeral head. The adult stage is characterized by a smooth humeral head. The consistent presence of the surface texture of ventral humeral shaft is most probably caused by the strong muscle insertion presumably related to the function of steering of the fore fins in mixosaurs. Five morphotypes of Chinese mixosaurs are recognized in this study. Twenty-five more or less new characters are introduced to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of mixosaurian-like specimens from China. The monophyly of mixosaurs including all studied Chinese morphotypes is well corroborated. Further investigation on the mixosaurs from Monte San Giorgio is recommended to resolve the phylogenetic relationships of mixosaurs.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Earth Sciences<br>Doctoral<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
In this paper I investigate if and how strengthening creditor rights enables firms to engage in more innovation activities, using the enactment of a new property law in China as a natural experiment. By using a newly constructed measure of land unavailability, I find that firms in cities where construction is more constrained by geography substitute short-term debt with long-term debt, hold less internal cash, invest more on intangible assets and eventually generate more patents after the enactment of the law. Moreover, this positive effect of the reform on innovation is more profound for firms that have more tangible assets, that are dependent on debt financing and that are more financially constrained. Those results highlight the importance of debt financing for innovation and shed light on the underlying mechanisms through which it takes effect.<br><p>Lic.-avh. Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 71-73).<br>Logistics efficiency is low in China. In 2008, total logistics costs accounted for 18.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) in China, which was almost twice that of the United States. Increasing logistics efficiency can save an enormous amount of money, hence is worthy of study. Since the U.S. is similar to China in many areas and its logistics efficiency is high, I study the U.S. and compare with China, then draw lessons from the comparison. Five aspects of logistics in both countries are analyzed: 1) logistics history, 2) transportation infrastructure, 3) logistics structure, 4) logistics IS/IT, and 5) logistics governance. Lessons from the comparison conclude: 1) railways should receive a higher priority for infrastructure investment, 2) logistics market is too fragmented, consolidation among logistics operators should be encouraged, and 3PL market needs government support to grow, 3) I/IT application in logistics is still in its infancy stage. Standardization of IS/IT in logistics and public information platform should be supported, and 4) logistics governance plays an important role in eliminating local government protectionism and easing imbalance between inland and coastal regions in China.<br>by Ming Xiong.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
<p>Abstract</p><p>The interest in China today is enormous, and media talk about successful firms and entrepreneurs that engage in business with China. This positive image has created a general per-ception that China offers the moon and the stars for Swedish micro and small sized enterprises (MSEs). We still believe that there are many opportunities to extend or build busi-ness upon import from China. However, we question media’s communication that import from China is a straight way to success. If this is an accurate picture of the situation, what is it that makes Swedish companies hesitating about establishing import business from China?</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to identify the reasons for Swedish MSEs to engage in import from China, as well as recognizing the problems they experience. We will by analysing the underlying factors of the problems describe different ways to handle these issues.</p><p>We have chosen a qualitative approach with semistructured, deep-going interviews, which we have carried out on six companies that have gone through with the import process from China. The empirical findings will be the base in order to verify the theories on this subject.</p><p>We have come to the conclusion that there is a division between production companies and trading companies when it comes to the reason to start importing. Trading firms generally follow the opportunities while production companies are forced to take action because of push effects. Also, the hype about China has helped in choosing China before other countries. The companies in this thesis have generally no trouble in finding a supplier but rather to find suitable suppliers.</p><p>The major problems in trading with China are quality and delivery, which many companies handle by shortterm procedures like over-explicitness, constant reminders and increased specifications. They argue that these problems depend on lack of understanding, variation in outlook, different behaviour, as well as pride and attitudes among the Chinese. However, we believe that these issues have their roots in culture, linguistics and different views of how relationships should be considered. Thus it would be a more long term solution to handle the underlying issues which in the extension is a more successful way of importing from China.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Inventory management has become a favorite topic in the literature. However, research focusing on inventory performance and management in China is quite limited. A good understanding of inventory control would provide valuable information about the mechanism through which a firm determines its target inventory level and adjusts the inventory volume. Moreover, this study also contributes to examine inventory management improvement and its implement in developing country. This research uses a large sample of firm-level panel data from China to study inventory management and performance from three aspects. First, using a variant of error-correction model, we empirically study the adjustment pattern of inventory and the effects of certain determinants on firms’ target inventory level with emphasis on industry heterogeneity over the period 2000-2009. We find strong evidence indicating a partial adjustment mechanism in short-run and the speeds of adjustment are various among different industries. From a long-run perspective, sales, ownership structure, political affiliation and managerial fixed cost are detected to be significant indicators of target inventory level. Second, we employ an asymmetric error-correction model to study the adjustment mechanism of inventory in different macro business regimes. We find that an asymmetric adjustment mechanism could be commonly claimed in short-run: firms tend to be more sensitive when they confront negative demand shocks. However, the indicators of target inventory level work symmetrically regardless of external business environment. Last, we test whether there is a link between innovation and inventory reduction. We find that total factor productivity (TFP) is a better indicator of innovation, and higher TFP contributes to a lower inventory volume. Moreover, when allowing the asymmetric adjustment mechanism, the impact of TPF is symmetric between the upswing and downswing of business cycle, which means the benefits of innovations are lasting and cannot be discharged by adverse economic environments.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the fees charged by underwriters for conducting IPOs in China. By examining a sample of 1,171 Chinese IPOs conducted during 2001-2011, I obtain the first evidence from China on the direct issue cost, the gross spreads, and identify its determinants, including issue proceeds, number of lead managers, and lead manager reputation. The results show a pattern of over-time increase of the spreads, which is at 0.16 percentage points per year for state-owned enterprise (SOE) offerings and 0.73 percentage points per year for non-SOE ones. The gross spreads do not exhibit clustering, but are largely consistent with increased demand for underwriting services from non-SOEs that, together with increased complexity of underwriting, has pushed underwriting fees up.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Economics and Finance<br>Master<br>Master of Philosophy

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the use of trade credit in China, relying on balance sheet information for a large sample of unlisted companies over the period 2004-2007. We first investigate which factors drive the extension and the obtainment of trade credit. Private companies extend less trade credit the higher the amount of inventories they hold and the lower the share of capital owned by foreign agents. Consistent with the Triangle Debt Dilemma, state-owned enterprises and collective enterprises are more likely to obtain trade credit if they have previously extended it. We then examine the effect of net trade credit, measured as accounts payable minus accounts receivable, on the capital structure. We show that net trade credit is positively associated with total and short-term debt. This relationship holds in those provinces with high levels of marketization and it is valid for private and foreign firms only if located in the most developed provinces. Finally, we analyze how accounts payable and accounts receivable affect the extensive margin of exports. Accounts payable influence the probability of exporting through an inverted U-shaped relationship for all ownership types. However, the nonlinearity holds also for accounts receivable only for private companies.

Abstract:
Twenty two genera containing thirty eight species and nine problematic taxa of fossil plants are described from the Lower Shihhotse Formation of the Lower Permian of Dongshan, Taiyuan, North China. They include three new genera, seven new species and two new combinations. Five genera and six species are rediagnosed. The plants described include sphenophylls, discinites, marattialeans, pecopterids, alethopterids, emplecopterids, sphenopterids, tingias, cycads, cordaites and possible conifers. Discinites dentilongii sp. nov. (Noeggerathiales) is described having disc-like sporophylls with a decurrent base. The marattialean fern Taiyuanitheca tetralinea gen. et sp. nov. has four rows of circular synangia on its pinnules. The evolution of the Marattiales is discussed. Tingia Halle and Tingiostachya Konno are rediagnosed with new morphological interpretations. Shuangnangostachya gracilis gen. et sp. nov. has spirally arranged sporophylls, each with two sporangia. This taxon is assigned to a new family. Much additional information on cycads has been gained from these assemblages,: Four species of the earliest known cycad megasporophylls are described and their taxonomy clarified. Based on the attachment of the megasporophylls of Crossozamia minor sp. nov. to an axis, new evolutionary pathways of the female cycad reproductive organs are proposed.. The later appearance of similar megasporophylls in Europe suggests that migration was from northern China westwards by dispersal of seeds in ocean currents. The associated leaf Yuania Sze and two of its species are rediagnosed". Tianbaolinia circinalis gen. et sp. nov. is considered to be an immature stage in cycad leaf development. On the evidence of the plants studied here, the climate during the early Permian in the Taiyuan area is suggested to have been warm and the humidity to have varied with local topography. The unique plants of this area reconfirm the independent nature of the Cathaysian flora.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the strategic timing of corporate disclosures in the institutional context of China. It comprises three independent but linked studies which draw on both financial and psychological theories. The focus is on the Chinese setting as the unique regulations governing corporate disclosures enables managers to strategically time their disclosures of quarterly reports. The sample comprises 18273 observations from 2006 to 2012 which covers both A and B shares from the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. Firstly, under the Chinese booking system of quarterly report disclosure, I examine whether managers delay the disclosure of bad news relative to good news. The listed firms in China are required to book disclosure dates of quarterly reports before legal disclosure periods, and they are allowed to change the dates after the bookings have been made. Through this booking system, the advance and delay of quarterly report disclosures can be observed directly. Supporting prior literature, I find that managers advance their first booking disclosure dates if quarterly reports reveal good news, but delay them if quarterly reports reveal bad news. I further demonstrate that managers' preference for modifying of first booking dates as a timing strategy appears to occur when they have strong incentives to withhold their firm news and potentially gamble that the subsequent release of relative market conditions could turn in their favor. In line with the prediction of Acharya et al. (2011), my results suggest that managers tend to advance their first booking dates, when relative market conditions are bad. Conversely, they are likely to postpone them, when relative market conditions are good. The second study utilizes the Chinese overlapping legal disclosure period between an annual report of one year and the subsequent first quarterly report to test whether the nature of firm's news in uences the release sequence of the two financial information sources. Mental accounting theory suggests that individuals tend to integrate losses and segregate gains. In line with this theory, I find that managers are willing to release their annual report and subsequent first quarterly report simultaneously if both reports reveal bad news, but separately if both reports reveal good news. When two reports reveal conflicting information, managers are likely to make separate dis-closure, if the annual report reveals good news and the subsequent first quarterly report reveals bad news. In particular, I demonstrate that managers indeed achieve simultaneous and separate disclosure through amending the first booking dates of their annual report and subsequent first quarterly report. Baker and Wurgler (2007) suggest that both high proportions of retail investors and short sale constraints enable Chinese stock markets to be a natural experiment for investor sentiment studies. Therefore, utilizing Chinese data, in the final study, I investigate whether investor sentiment affects managers' decisions of quarterly report disclosures. Since the stock prices tend to be higher during high sentiment periods than low sentiment periods, managers may choose to accelerate the disclosure dates of their quarterly report during the high sentiment periods, conversely, decelerate them during the periods of low sentiment. The results support this and are especially pronounced for firms releasing bad news, who appear to (1) release their firm news earlier than firms with good news when sentiment is high and (2) delay quarterly report disclosures more than firms with good news when sentiment is low.

The role of independent auditors is to ensure the accuracy and the credibility of the financial statements. Independent auditors help in reducing agency costs and serve as a monitoring function for creditors. A change in an auditor–client relationship may provide useful information to creditors. Creditors may consider the signal of auditor changes, which affects information risks, as a factor in determining the terms of debts. After several major audit scandals, awareness of the importance of audit quality has increased. Audit partner changes and audit firm changes have been implemented in some jurisdictions to enhance the audit quality. Since China requires disclosure by signing partners’ names on audit reports, audit partner rotations can be identified. The direction of audit firm changes can be downward, lateral, and upward audit firm changes. In this thesis, the effects on debt financing of auditor changes at both audit firm and audit partner levels in different directions are comprehensively investigated. This thesis addresses the importance of understanding the association between audit firm/ partner changes and debt financing. I find that, overall, auditor changes worsen debt financing in various situations. The findings of this thesis should have important implications for investors, corporate financial managers, and regulators.

Abstract:
Immigration issues have been put on the center of the discussion table for years. Mentioning the term, the first thing coming into one’s mind maybe Mexican or Latino citizens secretly hide inside a cargo ship and risk their lives to cross the border. But the new Chinese immigrants’ inflow creates no less influence. They do not bring drugs but take brutal labor jobs, they do not come with families but live more compactly with groups, they do not keep unnoticed but will actively show up in churches and can get green card with much ease. The externalization of Chinese migrant worker trend deserves more social and economic attention. In this master’s report, I will unravel the puzzles of the Chinese immigration wave, focusing on their pursuit of asylum fraud. In 2011, more than 32 percent of the total 21,012 asylum approvals are granted to Chinese nationals. In east Los Angeles area, where undocumented Chinese conglomerate, low-end factories and shops, churchs, and law offices form up a complete immigration chain service. V The two main characters, Ai Peng and Guo Yinghua, represent the two universal approaches among the Chinese community: asylum through reasons of religion and birth control. Through interviews with professionals and scholars and existing materials, I am intending to depict the real lives of asylees, evaluate impact of the immigration wave, and raises legal and executive questions for improvement.<br>text

Full text
Abstract:
A new sub-culture, “Rotten Culture (腐文化) ”, evolved from Japanese Boys’ Love (BL) manga, has rapidly spread in China and dramatically influenced many areas of Chinese artistic creation. “Rotten Culture” is an extension of Boys’ Love, which indicates that Boys’ Love elements not only existed in manga, but emerged in anime, movies, TV series, and so on. As a start of an analysis of this phenomenon, this thesis will focus on the core of “Rotten Culture”, Boys’ Love, which exists in Chinese manga and web fiction. The central issues addressed by this thesis are: exploring the circulation of Boys’ Love from Japan to China; examining the aesthetics and themes of some of these works; and analyzing the motivations that explain why such a huge amount of people, both professional and non-professional, have joined in creating Boys’ Love art works.<br>Graduate

Due to the extremely high degree of underpricing in China, a lot of studies have been attracted and have been trying to find out what makes the underpricing in China so severe. This study employs the cross-sectional analysis and find that: (1) The underpricing of IPOs in China is primarily explained by the ex ante uncertainty surrounding the new issues and inequality of supply and demand. (2) The different IPO mechanisms also affect the degree of underpricing in China.

This unique connection has provided the possibility of a different research agenda on China that is not available in those other communities, such as Europe, Japan or North America, which never experienced in the kind of White Australia policy that reflected fear toward re-colonization by the yellow race. In addition, Fitzgerald has specifically thought about the identity of Australia in the production of knowledge concerning Asia and the Confucian ethics which constituted the modern China as well. The paper introduces Fitzgerald’s major research propositions and discusses their implications to the development of an Australian sinology.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立中山大學<br>中國與亞太區域研究所<br>107<br>As the first constitutional republic established by Puritans, the American frontiers believed they are indorsed by God with manifest destiny to expand their physical territory in the new continent and build “Americana” by spreading American spiritual values of freedom and democracy to the whole world. Two centuries later, the United States has successfully become leader among all states and strongest framer and keeper of world order after the cold war. While China on the other hand, Den Xiao-ping’s efforts of “reform and opening-up” as well as “relation formalization” with the U.S. in late 1970s, has made China a economic power only next to the United States 40 years later, and now is striving for a great rejuvenation of “China dream” under President Xi Jing-pin’s leadership after years of “humiliated history”. The United States has no doubt been a major role in helping China’s economic rise and contradictorily made China a major power that in turn challenging U.S. hegemonic status. It is author’s intention to explore what original goal was when such inconsistent China policy was made. Historical research approach was adopted to explore policies in different period and concluded goals of Christianizing, modernizing, democratizing, pacifying, and subduing in time sequence were found as results of balanced consideration between realism and idealism in term of “Changing China.” Various policies such as peace evolution, sanction, engagement, congagement and containment were also made by US government to change and shape China’s behaviors owing to different time and space background and dynamical conditions of mutual relationship.
