Patrick, Murimi, Kiano Elvis, and K. Siele Richard. "Effects of Kenya-China Bilateral Relations on Kenya's Economic Growth." Journal of Economics, Finance And Management Studies 07, no. 08 (2024): 4956–64. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13283602.

Full text
Abstract:
The essence of bilateral relations to any nation is to offer the country the chance to access resources that are not locally available. China has emerged as a major global power marking an unparalleled presence in the international arena with significant influence in Africa. In Kenya, Chinese imports, Foreign Direct Investments and debts have grown tremendously over the years. Whereas Kenya has experienced some economic growth in those years, it is not yet clear whether the bilateral relationship with China is the cause of this growth. There have been mixed results on the studies done on the implication of Kenya - China bilateral relations on Kenya’s Economic Growth, therefore, calling for further research. The general objective of the study was to determine the impact of the bilateral relations between Kenya and China on Kenya’s Economic Growth, while the specific objectives were to determine the effect of the Chinese imports from Kenya, Kenya’s exports to China, Kenya’s debt from China and foreign direct investment inflows from China on the Kenya’s Economic Growth. This was made possible through the analysis of 32 years’ data ranging from 1990 to 2021 on an annual time series basis. The study employed the neo-classical model of Solow-Swan Theory, supplemented by the Dependency Theory. The study utilized an explanatory research design. The study findings showed that Kenya's economic growth is significantly and negatively influenced by foreign direct investment. Debt had an insignificant effect on Economic growth, Imports had a significant effect on the economic growth and Exports were found to have an insignificant negative effect on economic growth. The study concluded that foreign direct investment has a negative and significant effect on the economic growth, while imports have a significant and positive effect on economic growth. Debt had an insignificant and positive effect on the economic growth, while exports had an insignificant and negative effect on economic growth. The research therefore recommends that Kenya is an import-led growth economy. Therefore, imports from China, especially for capital goods that are used in critical sectors such as industries, infrastructure, and agriculture should be encouraged. By importing from China, a technologically developed country, Kenya benefits by transfer of technology, knowledge and innovations. It is also recommended that the foreign direct investment from China to Kenya need to be monitored and limited. New policies need to be put in place to protect “dumping” and “crowding out effect” as well as protect local industries and artisans working in the informal sector.

Fei, Dongliang, Yaxi Guo, Qiong Fan, et al. "Phylogenetic and recombination analyses of two deformed wing virus strains from different honeybee species in China." PeerJ 7 (June 28, 2019): e7214. http://dx.doi.org/10.7717/peerj.7214.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Deformed wing virus (DWV) is one of many viruses that infect honeybees and has been extensively studied because of its close association with honeybee colony collapse that is induced by Varroa destructor. However, virus genotypes, sequence characteristics, and genetic variations of DWV remain unknown in China. Methods Two DWV strains were isolated from Jinzhou and Qinhuangdao cities in China, and were named China1-2017 (accession number: MF770715) and China2-2018 (accession number: MH165180), respectively, and their complete genome sequences were analyzed. To investigate the phylogenetic relationships of the DWV isolates, a phylogenetic tree of the complete open reading frame (ORF), structural protein VP1, and non-structural protein 3C+RdRp of the DWV sequences was constructed using the MEGA 5.0 software program. Then, the similarity and recombinant events of the DWV isolated strains were analyzed using recombination detection program (RDP4) software and genetic algorithm for recombination detection (GARD). Results The complete genomic analysis showed that the genomes of the China1-2017 and China2-2018 DWV strains consisted of 10,141 base pairs (bp) and 10,105 bp, respectively, and contained a single, large ORF (China1-2017: 1,146–9,827 bp; China2-2018: 1,351–9,816 bp) that encoded 2,894 amino acids. The sequences were compared with 20 previously reported DWV sequences from different countries and with sequences of two closely related viruses, Kakugo virus (KV) and V. destructor virus-1. Multiple sequence comparisons revealed a nucleotide identity of 84.3–96.7%, and identity of 94.7–98.6% in amino acids between the two isolate strains and 20 reference strains. The two novel isolates showed 96.7% nucleotide identity and 98.1% amino acid identity. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the two isolates belonged to DWV Type A and were closely related to the KV-2001 strain from Japan. Based on the RDP4 and GARD analyses, the recombination of the China2-2018 strain was located at the 4,266–7,507 nt region, with Korea I-2012 as an infer unknown parent and China-2017 as a minor parent, which spanned the entire helicase ORF. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to the complete sequence of DWV isolated from Apis cerana and the possible DWV recombination events in China. Our findings are important for further research of the phylogenetic relationship of DWVs in China with DWV strains from other countries and also contribute to the understanding of virological properties of these complex DWV recombinants.

Abstract:
China, as a populous and agricultural country, is confronted with a tremendous challenge involving the balance between agricultural economic growth and carbon emissions from agricultural land utilisation (CEALU). This study calculates the total CEALU in the 31 provinces of mainland China and uses the Tapio model to analyse the decoupling of CEALU from economic growth during the period 2000–2017. The results are shown as follows: (i) The CEALU in China has substantially increased, and there are obvious spatial discrepancies in CEALU from the regional and provincial perspectives. (ii) The decoupling of CEALU from economic growth at the national level shows a progressive improvement. The decoupling trends show significant spatial disparities at the regional level due to different natural and economic conditions. (iii) There is an increase in the numbers of provinces, which have achieved economic growth with the reduction of CEALU. Policymakers should attach more importance to the relationship between CEALU and economic growth, and relevant policies should be adapted to local natural and economic conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
A total of 32 different grape cultivars including representatives of local Chinese cultivars, some important and widely grown Chinese cultivars and international reference cultivars were genotyped at nine microsatellite loci in order to characterize their genetic diversities. The numbers of alleles detected per locus ranged from 9 to 18 with a total of 105 alleles and an average of 11.7 alleles per locus, while the number of microsatellite genotypes varied between 10 and 23, indicating that there are abundant allele diversities in Chinese grape cultivars. The expected heterozygosity varied between 0.740 and 0.915 and the polymorphism information content ranged from 0.716 to 0.908. According to the results of clustering and Principal Coordinates Analysis, three groups were identified among all these cultivars. The clusters of cultivars showed a clear separation of table grape, wine grape of Vitis vinifera and hybrids between European and American species. This study generated a microsatellite profile database for the cultivars from Chinese local and newly bred grapes.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate present and future value. Design/methodology/approach - This paper intends to prove the relationship between CSR and corporate value once again by selecting A-share companies listed on the China Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange from 2010 2017. This paper also examines the effect of five dimensions of CSR on corporate value in China. Findings - Empirical evidence shows that CSR is conducive to corporate value. The fulfillment of social responsibilities improves firm value in the future. Further, the regression results show that the social responsibility of the non-state-owned enterprise (Non-SOEs) group has a more significant effect on corporate financial performance than on the state-owned enterprise (SOEs) group. Research implications or Originality - This study has limitations. First, the grouping is only divided into two groups of SOEs and non-SOEs, and we did not consider foreign investments, that is, foreign-funded enterprises, for the comparative analysis. Second, only the linear relationship between CSR and corporate value was tested. In the future, we must determine whether there exists a nonlinear relationship between the two key concepts. Finally, there exists no research on CSR and corporate value by specific industries. Thus, the relationship between the five dimensions of CSR and corporate value should be investigated by specific industries.

Abstract:
The study inspects the effect of corruption on economic growth in China. Corruption is a permanent dilemma, especially for emerging economies, and as a main indicator of quality governance. The study uses data from 1996 to 2015 for key variables e.g. corruption perception index, trade openness. The results show that in the short-run, China gains from the typical corruption, nevertheless the coefficient is statistically insignificant with a slight degree. Though, to support long-run sustainable economic growth, it is very important to overwhelm corruption and ensure good governance. The results show that Chinas corruption prevents long-run economic growth. Hence, to maintain stable development and strong economic growth in China, more efforts are needed to eliminate corruption from society

Abstract:
This study indicated the current trend of mobile learning development in China by reviewing literature published in China from 2008 to 2018. Factors like issues, status, challenges, subject domains, students’ behaviour, teacher’s readiness and teachers’ professional development are considered in the analysis for the review. Major findings imply that the study of mobile learning in China shows a rising tendecy in the last decade. Technological education is in urgent need to adopt mobile learning to meet the requirement of digital education in China’s higher education system. Integration with technology has made progress in terms of teaching strategy, pedagogical practice and teaching model, but teachers need to improve professional development to gain a better effect in teaching digital age. The result implies for further study to improve mobile learning in China’s higher education system.
