Abstract:
The Hughes brothers first gained critical attention for their intelligent investigations of the African-American experience in films like Menace II Society (1993) and American Pimp (2000). In From Hell (2001)——based on the graphic novel of the same name——the brothers attempt to examine the Jack the Ripper murders within a similar framework, but also with the goal of maki" different from their "black movies."Unfortunately, in doing so, they lost the social critique of both the source material and their previous films. The brothers' ideas about black movies and about themselves as filmmakers and the critical response to From Hell illustrate how black movies continue to exist in a cinematic ghetto.

Schwarz, Wolfgang. "Atommacht Pakistan - "The Ally From Hell"." Universität Potsdam, 2013. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2013/6424/.

Abstract:

Abstract:
From Heaven, Through the World, to Hell is a theatrical piece which makes reference to various versions of the Faust legend. There are two versions of the piece: the full version for actress-singer, CD, computer, and four chamber ensembles (piano quintet, baroque trio, jazz quartet and modern ensemble), and the solo version for actress-singer, CD, and computer. The work explores the Faust legend within a technological musical theatre framework, and makes extensive use of live computer interaction using the Max/MSP programming environment. The singer interacts with the computer using an infrared sensor, allowing her to trigger as well as shape many of the sounds in the piece through physical gestures. This piece was written for g.e.m.s. (the Group of the Electronic Music Studio) as part of the McGill University Faculty of Music composer-in-residence program between 1998--1999.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to establish the literary background to the representation of Hell in Elizabethan tragic drama. It uses historicist techniques to posit a causative relation between religious change introduced by the Elizabethan religious settlement and the form and content of Elizabethan tragedy, both dramatic and non-dramatic. More particularly I am concerned with the post-Reformation conceptions of the spaces of the afterworld, especially those consequent upon the dissolution of purgatory and the developing emphasis on Hell. I am also interested in the new emphasis on predestination and the effect on theological doctrine concerning the divine or diabolical origin of sin on earth. If sin originates with the Devil then sinful acts on earth are linked with Hell, and the link between Hell and the Devil is articulated in tragedy as a particular discourse of tyranny. At the start, I cite Shakespeare's Richard III, a familiar Elizabethan text, that demonstrates how the secular and religious anxieties about the endless punishments in Hell generate a fear that the forces of Hell penetrate earth and produce "mirrors" of Hell on the Elizabethan stage. Then Igo back to look at less familiar texts leading up to it, starting with the Elizabethan adaptations of the de casibus form in the William Baldwin editions of A Mirror for Magistrates, especially the contributions from Thomas Sackville, and also Richard Robinson's The Rewarde of Wickednesse. In part three I include a discussion of Jasper Heywood's translations of two Senecan tragedies, Troas and Thyestes, and the Reformers' debates on the treatment of tyranny in four early Elizabethan tragedies: Gorboduc, Cambises, Horestes and Jocasta. The final part of this thesis examines Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy and Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine and their engagement with the discussions of Hell and earthly sin.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: John Michalczyk
Although the National Socialists' ultimate intentions in regard to religion were concealed from the pubic under layers of political rhetoric, their objectives were nonetheless clear. The National Socialists sought the destruction of the Christian religion, whose teachings and values were seen as inimical to those of the State, and the establishment of a Reichskirche that would preach the doctrines of National Socialism. The German government during the Third Reich was a totalitarian regime, but there was one matter in which the Nazi Party did not have carte blanche, religion, which made it an intrinsic threat to the authority of the State. Many Nazi officials saw Christianity as the inherent and irreconcilable enemy of National Socialism, but they knew they risked losing the support of the German people if they instantly dissolved the Christian Churches. Instead of vehemently attacking the Christian confessions the way they did in Poland, in Germany the National Socialists set up a mirage of support for and acceptance of religious institutions, all while working to undermine the Christian tradition that they considered of greatest detriment and danger to their State
Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2004
Submitted to: Boston College. Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the emissions from the Swedish truck fleet between 2007- 2014. By descriptive analysis the emissions of NOx, PM, HC and CO are found to decrease at the truck level, the firm level and municipal level. A difference-in-difference analysis is performed to Stockholm municipality where a low emissions zone (LEZ) is located. Heavy trucks in the transportation sector are examined. Emissions are found to decrease more outside of the LEZ than within. This contrasts to other studies on LEZs and to the political goal of the zone. These results indicate that a green transition is occurring in the Swedish truck fleet. Moreover, the adjustment to the LEZ appears to mainly force the firms with dirty trucks located outside of Stockholm municipality to switch to cleaner vehicles

Brunton, Isabel Charlotte. "From Hell to Utopia : how clinical psychologists who don't believe in free will experience delivering therapy." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17215.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Both Freud (1921) and Skinner (1971) were regarded as 'hard determinists' who saw human thought and action as determined by prior events, and the idea of free will as simply an illusion. While this belief system clearly impacted on the models of therapy they developed, whether such beliefs also had an impact on their ability to develop qualities of effective therapy, such as empathic and genuine therapeutic relationships, is not known. Furthermore, whether there is something about holding this belief system that could affect therapists' abilities to attain and nurture such qualities, remains unclear. Research Question: The research study reported here sought to gain some insight into the above question, and into what it is like to deliver therapy from a hard determinist philosophical frame, by asking how clinical psychologists who hold a hard determinist philosophy, experience delivering therapy. Method: The study made use of a qualitative design methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven hard determinist clinical psychologists, and interview transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: Four super-ordinate themes emerged from the analysis: 'From Hell to Utopia: How it feels to be a hard determinist therapist', 'Hating the sin, loving the sinner: Enhancing the therapeutic relationship', 'Free will: A felt vs reflective understanding', and 'Therapist as thinker'. Implications: The themes to emerge from the data gave rise to a number of implications and recommendations for practice and further research. In particular, it was recommended that the link between hard determinist beliefs and a perceived enhancement of the therapeutic relationship warrants further research. Furthermore, since the philosophy was linked to ideas about power, self-control, therapeutic models, science, and research, discussions of the philosophy may add valuable contributions to clinical psychology's understanding of these issues. In addition, a replication or development of this study with a broader range of therapists is recommended, to establish whether the findings reported here can be generalised to therapists from fields outside clinical psychology.

Abstract:
The Winograd Challenge has been advocated as a test of computer understanding with respect to commonsense reasoning. The challenge is based on Winograd Schemas: sentences that contain correferential ambiguities. Most Winograd Schemas are relatively easy for human subjects, and today the best computer systems for the Winograd Challenge can work close to human performance. In this paper, we examine the assumptions behind the Winograd Challenge, and investigate how far we can push the difficulty level of Winograd Schemas, proposing various strategies to build really challenging schemas.
