Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to try to understand the love choice from the psychoanalytical point of view. We assume that loving relationships often repeat some patterns of childhood behavior, mainly the Oedipus and the mother/child relationship. Nevertheless, the choice occurs in different ways according to each partner`s family history. Each individual, with his own singularity, will give a destination to his heritage. Sometimes, however, it becomes difficult to run away from something that has not been expressed at preceding generations. Things that could not be revealed will somehow appear, even though disguised.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes tourism and tourism policy in Russia from Tsarist to post-Soviet period. In this respect the main focus will be on the post-Soviet period. The collapse of the Soviet Union negatively affected tourism and tourism industry in the country. Tourism and tourism industry found itself in an uncertain environment during the transition period. With the establishment of Russian Federal Agency for Tourism in 2004, tourism policies became more effective in the Russian Federation. This study discusses the implementation of tourism policies and efforts of the Russian government for transforming the country into a well known touristic destination of the world.

Abstract:
The recent atmosphere of cooperation in the United Nations (UN) has resulted in many nations, including the Russian Federation, proposing increases in the scope and nature of security missions that the UN should undertake. This thesis will focus on those security arrangements in the UN from the Russian perspective. This thesis will first examine the historical policy of the former Soviet Union and discuss those aspects that relate to the emerging Russian policy in the UN, namely, the rationale behind a cooperative approach and the factors which might return Russia to those confrontational policies of its predecessor's past. This will be followed by a discussion of Russia's assumption of Soviet responsibilities in the UN and the emerging foreign policy debate within the Russian government. This thesis will then highlight the recent Russian security initiatives in the UN which include proposals for strengthening peacekeeping, peacemaking and preventive diplomacy ventures. Finally, an overview of the motivations and impediments behind Russia's renewed emphasis on strengthening security management within the UN will be presented. Current diplomatic activity within the Russian Federation and United Nations clearly illustrates that Russia is seeking, through a cooperative approach, to expand its influence within the United Nations. However, in the future political infighting within the Russian government will determine the extent of this cooperative policy in the UN.... Klocker, Cornelia Angela. "Collective punishment and human rights : from Israel to Russia." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2018. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/370/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses collective punishment in the context of human rights law from a New Legal Realist perspective. Collective punishment is a concept deriving from the law of armed conflict. It describes the punishment of a group for an act allegedly committed by some of its members and is prohibited in times of armed conflict by treaty and customary international law. Recently, the imposition of collective punishment has been witnessed in situations outside armed conflict. This means that the applicable legal framework is human rights law and not the law of armed conflict. Human rights instruments do not explicitly address collective punishment. Consequently, there is a genuine gap in the protection of groups affected by collective punishment in situations outside of or short of armed conflict. Supported by two case studies on collective punishment in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and in Chechnya, the thesis examines potential options to close this gap in human rights law in a way contributing to the empowerment of affected groups. This analysis will focus on the European Convention on Human Rights due to its relevance to the situation in Chechnya. The protection and empowerment of groups necessitates a reconsideration of group rights under the human rights framework and challenges the traditionally individual focus of human rights law. By questioning whether human rights instruments can encompass such rights and adapt to the changing circumstances, the thesis contributes to the broader academic debate on rights held by collectivities in general and on collective human rights in particular. The thesis is therefore centred on the following research question: What is the relationship between the legal regulation and state policies on collective punishment under the law of armed conflict and human rights law and what effects does this relationship have on the protection and empowerment of affected groups?

Abstract:
This thesis presents the analysis of environmental movements in Russia.Through a collective memory and discourse framework, this study reviews the overlap and disparity in perceptions of environmental movements in the Soviet Union and Russia. The portrait that emerges from the analysis of the environmental movements suggests that the impact of environmental movements in Russia may be limited in part because it has developed in contravention to existing discourses. More importantly, the context and underlying assumptions of environmental movements are not formulated in ways that are compatible with existing collective identities in Russian society.

Figueiró, Lucas Woltmann. "From usa, with love : desenvolvimento, extensão rural e gênero." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/183301.

Full text
Abstract:
Similar to the model developed in the United States of America at the beginning of the 20th century, this Association reproduced a social division of labor defined on the basis of the naturalization of characteristics considered as masculine or feminine: on the one hand, the agricultural area (“technical”) which associated man with productive aspects, on the other, the area of domestic economy or social welfare (“social”) that associated woman to domestic-reproductive activities, including their mediators and assisted. Because of the lack of attention by the scientific literature to this gender scheme, and especially to the “social” area, I questioned: what spaces has the "social" area and woman occupied throughout EMATER/RS-ASCAR history and through what representational means and practices has the difference of gender gained meaning? What implications did this bring to the Association? Seeking an answer for these questions, I realized documental analysis and interviews with fifteen collaborators of the Association, material interpreted in the light of the concepts and problems related to gender and development discourse. The analysis suggests that, because of the biopolitical rationality which justified the dual approach of the gender scheme, the "social" area occupied a secondary and complementary space in front of the productive occupations. Regarding representations, in the USA and Brazil, woman was initially associated with the domestic and naturalized as responsible for the maintenance of the health and morals of the rural family and should generate more adequate behaviors and knowledge according to modern western paradigms. The intervention of the “social” mediators should reinforce the fulfillment of this function, which would be obtained through individual visits, organization of women's groups and the holding of lectures, seminars and demonstrations about topics related to health, hygiene, food, clothing, home administration, which did not prevent the promotion of critical and emancipatory values in some cases. With the criticism that the rural extension suffered since the 1980s, and especially the doubt about the certification that guaranteed the prerogatives and benefits of ASCAR as a social assistance charity in 1992, the field of activity of the "social" area and the propositions to rural woman were compelled to change. To comply with the provisions of the Organic Law on Social Assistance (LOAS), since 2002 the discourses on work directed at rural woman gradually were reoriented the search for social and productive inclusion, articulating key themes such as intrafamily violence, political agency and productive dimension, overflowing old representations that reduced woman to the social function of mother and wife. However, because of the resistance on the part of the assisted and extensionists, the uncertainties about the role to be played in the face of expansion and complexity of the "social" field of work and the diversification of the staff in terms of gender, formation and trajectory, the approach to rural woman has been disputed. This reveals a hybrid time of the “social” area where old and new needs and propositions that gave meaning to the history of EMATER/RS-ASCAR accumulate and cause doubts about the type of social mediation to be fulfilled by its extensionists.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine if, and how local campaigns can be used to increase the success of a bigger charity campaign. The method used to study this is a series of interviews with people with insight in the campaign. For the study interviews have been conducted with both the targeted audience and with one of the creators and head figures of the local campaign. The theories used in the study are various theories about campaigning, the two step-flow of communication and the agenda-setting theory. The result shows that local campaigns can be used successfully in bigger campaigns. By using a channel and a message well suited for the cause the campaign managed to engage people in a way that earlier campaigns failed to. The conclusion of this study is that the two-step flow of communication still is relevant in these types of campaigns in Sweden. Through the two-step flow of communication the campaigns can reach and engage people in a way that a more direct strategy cannot achieve. Future studies could examine campaigns that have used a different message and channel to achieve its goals. The usage of the two-step flow of communication in commercial campaigns would also be interesting to study in order to see potential differences between campaigns for profit versus not for profit. Something that in the future can contribute to the studies around the two-step flow of communication and charity campaigns are the potential risks it brings for the organization regarding public relations.

Abstract:
<p>In Russia today women use traditional forms of birth control at unusually high rates, whereas, conversely their use of modern contraceptives is unusually low. During the Soviet period, women&rsquo;s access to modern contraceptive methods may have been limited. However, one would postulate that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the nature of the new reforms that developed would have lent itself to an increase in modern contraception usage on par with other countries. In Russia today there is not a lack of availability of modern contraceptives. Yet, women are still not using modern contraception at a rate that is congruent with an increase in availability. What then is influencing Russian women&rsquo;s decisions? The contraceptive acceptance of Russian women today is shaped by cultural legacies of the Soviet Union surrounding both contraceptives themselves and sex and sex education. </p>

Abstract:
The postglacial recolonization of northern Europe supposedly originated from Western Europe and the Russian Plain, however, recent molecular and macrofossil-based investigations suggest that the history may be more complex than previously thought. This study aims to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of Scots pine from Scandinavia to Russia to re-evaluate its recolonization history, and to examine whether the pattern of spatial genetic diversity has any adaptive significance. Populations ranging from Norway to Russia were sampled and genotyped using genotyping-by-sequencing. The seedlings were freeze tested to provide an average degree of hardiness for every population. Eight hundred and thirty-two seedlings were analyzed, and 6,034 SNPs were recovered in these individuals after stringent filtering. Population structure was investigated using fastStructure and differentiation between populations was estimated with pairwise FST and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) to assess the genetic variability. Genetic diversity was measured as observed heterozygosity, H0, in populations, clusters and overall. Two genetic clusters were detected in the samples, one in Norway and Sweden and one in Russia. These clusters are weakly differentiated (FST = 0.01202) with only 0.66 % variation between them. Highest variation was found within populations (98.8 %) and the overall genetic diversity for all populations was high (Ho = 0.2573). The weak differentiation and high diversity are indicative of extensive gene flow between populations in this species. The composition of the clusters across the sampled area suggests a westward recolonization from the Russian Plain into Scandinavia, and a possible local origin of another polymorphism in Norway and Sweden. No clear relationship between cold hardiness and genetic variation was detected. The clinal variation in cold hardiness reflects local adaptation, and the difference between genetic and phenotypic variation is likely due to epigenetic regulation or polygenic inheritance. More extensive genome scan is needed to understand the genetic basis of local adaptation.

Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the diversity of Botryosphaeriaceae species associated with a large and diverse collection of plant hosts from the Rostov region in Russia, using a polyphasic approach combining morphological and molecular data. Fungal isolates obtained were initially subjected to a fingerprinting by BOX-PCR in order to evaluate the overall genetic diversity of the collection. Selected isolates representative of each group were further identified by a phylogenetic approach combining two gene regions, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the ribosomal DNA cluster and part of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α). The results revealed three genera, namely Diplodia, Dothiorella and Phaeobotryon. Dothiorella was the most represented and prevalent genus throughout the samples studied and the species Dothiorella samentorum was clearly dominant. Two putative new species were identified in this work, one from the genus Dothiorella and another from Phaeobotryon. Several of the species are reported from Russia for the first time a large number of new host associations were identified.

Abstract:
The common idea of love is a fusion of the individuals into one. The idea has permeated throughout society so that it has now been taken for granted. Such an idea of fusion of two individuals is actually harmful rather than helpful. In this thesis, I will show why the fusion model is not a prime model of love that one should follow, starting with Sartre. He is the paradigmatic example of the traditional model of love going wrong. By taking the fusion model to its final culmination, love is impossible or among other things sadomasochistic. Beauvoir reads Sartre's view as a bad-faith version of love. She inserts her view by giving an account of the €œwoman in love which is an example of a woman under Sartre'€™s interpretation of love. After showing why love under Sartre cannot be true, Beauvoir states that authentic love can only happen if the individuals are equal. That way, love can have grounds for culmination and fusion. Irigaray looks at the fusion model as debunked. She sees what Sartre and Beauvoir try to do but they are still assuming major things. Irigaray states that genuine love is based on the differences particularly sexual differences €”which Sartre and Beauvoir have failed to realize. By looking at Irigaray'€™s account of love, the traditional fusion model is debunked and love based on differences is applauded.

Abstract:
Rapid urbanization and limited resources is creating enormous challenges to cities in the global South, which has been increasingly acknowledged as a motivation for international cooperation in recent years. Both theory and practice have however paid little attention to how differences in geographical contexts and views on what sustainability is play out in such cooperation. This study therefore explores how Swedish actors have sought to contribute to urban sustainability in low-income countries in the Global South. These efforts are traced through a case study of the Swedish SymbioCity concept by using an actor-network theory approach. Policy mobility theory is used to discuss how the transfer and translation of policies between cities takes focus away from their contested nature. Concepts are then drawn from socio-technical transitions theory to discuss what this specifically means in transitioning towards sustainability. Data is gathered through review of written materials and semi-structured interviews with actors in the case study. In following the evolution of the Sustainable City concept, I argue that it has managed to mutate so well “from trade to aid” due to its “fluid” and lovable qualities and a notion of Swedish urban sustainability which can be flexibly interpreted. In tracing the networking of Swedish sustainability, I argue that SymbioCity has followed a previously observed pattern in which the approach has been adapted to travel and the recipients have been prepared to receive the approach. In considering how the approach has impacted its recipients, I argue that although its applications seem to have been appreciated, the translation of urban sustainability throughout the network has turned focus away from the issue of what urban sustainability is by coordinating activities and by educating the recipients’ attention towards techno-managerial problem framings. I conclude that Swedish actors have managed to carefully adopt a commercial model of urban sustainability to the purposes of development cooperation and its geographical contexts of application. While this mutation has given rise to a network of somewhat disconnected practices, the efforts of both branches have nevertheless contributed to establishing sustainability as being fundamentally uncontested in its nature. This view of sustainability can be said to be permitted by certain interpretations of the Swedish experience of becoming more sustainable. From this I conclude that to ensure that international cooperation for urban sustainability takes place on equal and fundamentally democratic terms, Swedish actors (and sustainability transition theorists alike) would do well to also encourage and facilitate inclusive and critical discussions of how urban sustainability can be understood, in the North as well as the South. The main limitation of this work lies in the actual engagement with the targeted cities, which prevents a thorough understanding of both the perceived and the actual impact of the export of Swedish urban sustainability. Further research should therefore pay attention to how it has affected the targeted cities.

Rasell, Michael. "Social citizenship, disability and welfare provision in contemporary Russia : views from below." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3190/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses an area studies approach to examine the complex relationship between citizenship, disability and welfare provision. It does so through a bottom-up analysis of how the state welfare system affects the everyday lives of physically disabled adults in contemporary Russia. Drawing on thirteen months of qualitative fieldwork in the city of Kazan, I study how tensions between guaranteeing rights and providing care are balanced in social provision. My focus on physical disability offers a sharp insight into the socially constructed tropes of control and exclusion that can mediate experiences of citizenship and also seeks to rectify the lack of research on disabled people in non-Western contexts, especially the postsocialist region. My research is underpinned by a theoretical and methodological framework that sees ‘social citizenship’ as an explicitly relational, emotional and embodied phenomenon and therefore values lived experiences of welfare provision. Each of my four empirical chapters considers a particular dimension of citizenship: needs interpretation, livelihoods, mobility and personal agency. Together they highlight that welfare provision is not always empowering and can create powerful inequalities. At the same time, I show that citizenship is often reworked from below through actions and discourses that challenge official ideas about the capacities and needs of disabled people.

Budrina, M. (Maria). "The impact of IFRS adoption on accrual-based earnings management:evidence from Russia." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201405211443.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the impact of the IFRS adoption on earnings management and earnings quality in Russia. Despite the fact that multiple surveys and papers focus on earnings quality, earnings management and IFRS research, these topics are still actively being studied. This research is motivated by the increase of attention to the IFRS implementation process in Russia. The process of harmonization of Russian Accounting Standards with IFRS takes long time as there are significant differences between these two standards. The reasons for that are Russian economic and political issues. Existing academic research shows controversial results concerning the impact of the IFRS adoption on earnings quality. Some research provides evidence that the IFRS adoption brings significant benefits to a country as it improves disclosure quality and informational environment around the IFRS adoption. However, several studies argue, that, at the same time, IFRS give significant flexibility and discretion to managers. This does not always mean the improvement of disclosure quality. In this paper we provide one more examination of how IFRS influences earnings quality. This thesis studies the accrual-based type of earnings management. The empirical analysis employs the linear regression model which includes a dependent variable (discretionary accruals) and several control variables. The Jones model is used for the estimation of discretionary accruals as a measure of earnings management. The sample used for the analysis contains 577 observations of Russian companies from various industries during the period 2006–2012. This research proves that IFRS adoption increases accruals-based earnings management which leads to lower earnings quality in Russian companies. The results of the empirical research support the hypothesis that a positive correlation exists between IFRS adoption and earnings management. The results show that Russian companies use downward earnings management (income minimization) mostly. Finally, this paper demonstrates that IFRS do not always have a positive impact on the quality of accounting information. The adoption of IFRS in Russia is close to the final steps, but it is still not clear if it brings real benefits to the Russian business environment. The limitations of this study are the usage of the Jones model instead of the Modified Jones model and the relevancy of data set.

Linville, Deanna Christine. "Family Experiences Concerning Adopting a Previously Institutionalized Child from Russia or Romania." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28022.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of families choosing to adopt a child internationally in the United States has increased exponentially on an annual basis (Johnson, 1997; Miller, 2000). The purpose of this study was to understand the adoption process experiences of families who have adopted a child between the ages of three and five years old from Russia or Romania after 1992. In this clinical sample, all participantsâ adopted children had been referred for and undergone neuropsychological, medical, speech, and/or language evaluation. Specifically, the research questions were designed to help therapists understand the role mental health care professionals, schools, family members, and friends played in the adoption process and how the participantsâ experiences compared with their preadoptive expectations. Twenty families were interviewed and several observations were conducted. Data analysis consisted of thematic analysis which elicited codes and themes across the interviews. This studyâ s findings suggest that: 1) parents would have found more preparation before adoption helpful in the process; 2) health care professionals and schools need to be better educated about problems, concerns, and appropriate treatments specific to post-institutionalized children; 3) raising (a) special needs child(ren) puts significant strain on the caregiver(s) and their significant relationships; and 4) families with special needs children are extremely resilient. These findings are important for education and healthcare professionals, families who are planning to adopt internationally in the future and current adoptive families.<br>Ph. D.

Full text
Abstract:
The Ob is the third largest Eurasian river supplying heat and freshwater to the Arctic Ocean. These inputs influence water salinity, ice coverage, ocean temperatures and ocean circulation, and ultimately the global climate system. Variability of Ob River flow on long time scales is poorly understood, however, because gaged flow records are short. Eleven tree-ring width chronologies of Pinus sibirica and Larix sibirica are developed from the floodplain of the Lower Ob River, analyzed for hydroclimatic signal and applied as predictors in a regression model to reconstruct 8-month average (December-July) discharge of the Ob River at Salekhard over the interval 1705-2012 (308 yrs). Correlation analysis suggests the signal for discharge comes through air temperature: high discharge and floodplain water levels favor cool growing-season air temperature, which limits tree growth for the sampled species at these high latitudes. The reconstruction model (R-2 = 0.31, 1937-2009 calibration period) is strongly supported by cross validation and analysis of residuals. Correlation of observed with reconstructed discharge improves with smoothing. The long-term reconstruction correlates significantly with a previous Ob River reconstruction from ring widths of trees outside the Ob River floodplain and extends that record by another century. Results suggest that large multi-decadal swings in discharge have occurred at irregular intervals, that variations in the 20th and 21st centuries have been within the envelope of natural variability of the past 3 centuries, and that discharge data for 1937-2009 underestimate both the variability and persistence of discharge in the last 3 centuries. The reconstruction gives ecologists, climatologists and water resource planners a long-term context for assessment of climate change impacts.

Iliyasov, Marat. "Chechen demographic growth and resistance : reactions to the existential threat from Russia." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12171.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the phenomenon of Chechen population growth in the context of the protracted Russo-Chechen conflict. It argues that the conflict was the main causative reason for the growth of the Chechen population. This hypothesis was confirmed by fieldwork, which allowed for the detection of a positive correlation between the nation's demographic growth and the perception of the own physical existence as endangered. The results of fieldwork demonstrated that the majority of the informants connected high Chechen birth rates with the necessity of physical survival, restoration of losses, and strengthening the nation numerically. The threat to Chechen ethnic identity did not show as strong correlation with demographic growth as did the threat to physical existence. Nevertheless, Chechen ethnic identity, which favours resistance to a foreign rule, was confirmed to be the crucial variable in determining the demographic dynamics of the nation. This in turn suggested an additional correlation: in the context of an existential threat salient ethnic identity would prompt a population growth. The latter, in such cases, is considered as a way of continuing the resistance in a non-violent way. The restoration of the losses experienced and the survival of the nation is seen as a victory and at the same time as a preparation for the next outbreak of violence. With all of this in mind, this thesis suggests considering Chechen demographic growth as the reaction (which itself was determined by ethnic identity) to the existential threat imposed by Russia.

Otte, Abby M. "Short Stories & Selections From a Novel." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3846.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is composed of four short stories and selections from a novel. The stories are interested in investigating the web of relationships that make up our daily lives. In one, a girl watches as the only home she has ever known is encroached upon by a step-family, virtual strangers. In another, a girl is forced to face the consequences of a choosing love before friendship. And in the final two stories, a middle-aged gay man is reluctant to loose the only true love he has ever known, at times relying on his young daughter for support. The novel is concerned with sisterly love, with the notion that all of our actions have consequences, and that the people we care about most are almost always the people we hurt. It also investigates death, and how when we lose someone we love our memory of them shifts, changes, and that because of this they in essence remain alive.

Full text
Abstract:
The study “Everybody wants to make love to you” examines female Russian journalists’ experiences of sexism within their profession. The focus of the study is to examine how the journalists navigate through their profession whilst resisting against sexism and oppression. The study is based on material gathered through qualitative interviews with nine female informants with various backgrounds, ages and positions within journalism. All the respondents were (or had been) working in Moscow. The result of the study shows that our respondents have experienced sexism by being diminished, flirted with and sexually harassed in working situations. This is especially relevant when the respondents have met new people while reporting. Sometimes the women are encouraged by colleagues to put on something “sexy” or “play dumb” to, in some interview situations, get more information. The resistance towards gendered oppression often take shape on an individual level or within a person's small circle of people that can be trusted. Our results show that the respondents are using different tactics when facing gender related obstacles, such as using your gender role or through joking about the perpetrators within your inner circle.

Abstract:
This research project started as an orthodox inquiry within the frame of established management theory. It asked: "How can firms in supply chains cooperate more effectively?" The research experience, wider reading and reflection then led me to challenge the tacit assumptions which underpin much current management theory. I reached the view that our management theories contain faulty assumptions about the nature of the social world and the nature of knowledge. Further, it seemed that this faulty epistemology could have dangerous consequences for humanity. I therefore reframed my inquiry. Rather than asking how firms could cooperate in the pursuit of profit, I asked how people could achieve improved intersubjectivity in the daily interactions of their working lives. The goal became the re-enchantment o f supply chains in order to improve the prospects for the survival of the human species. Such a goal is beyond the reach of a PhD Thesis, however. Here, I offer some early tentative steps. Drawing on experiences from a longitudinal ethnographic study of two large organisations over four years, I offer a set of models, or "ways of thinking". These models attempt to address the challenge of how to improve the quality of our participation at work. They draw on a range of academic sources, including the emerging sciences of complexity. Whilst theories of supply chain are considered, prior technical knowledge of supply chain theories is not required. In the ethnographic accounts, some names have been changed to preserve confidentiality. The Thesis is presented in a narrative style. Permission was given to write in the first person.

Abstract:
This thesis has examined how expatriate managers in Russia create and use social networks with other individuals, in order to be successful in their assignment on an international unit. The study has also focused on how corporations can benefit from these networking activities conducted by the expatriates. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with expatriate managers on location in Russia in order to answer the research question. The interviews have later been analyzed by using a theoretical framework mainly based on the social capital theory and the main findings are as follows. Expatriate managers in Russia create networks with other individuals in order to both receive new business opportunities but also for adjusting to life in Russia. Corporations themselves do also benefit from these social networks, since they can create foundations for new business opportunities and increase corporations general image. The limitations of this study are that only Swedish expatriates have been included in the presented empirical material.

Awarded by:University of New South Wales - Australian Defence Force Academy. School of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/38745.

Full text
Abstract:
The continued existence of the Russian defence and arms industry, known as the Oboronnyi Promyshennyi Kompleks (OPK), was called into question following the disintegration of the Soviet Empire in 1991. Industry experts cited the lack of a domestic market, endemic corruption, and excess capacity within the industry as factors underpinning its predicted demise. The most telling factor was the sudden removal of considerable government subsidies and high defence industry wages that had traditionally buttressed the industry's economic viability and encouraged the cream of Russia's workers into the sector. It was a crippling blow. However, the industry's export customers in China, India and Iran during those early years became the OPK's saving grace. Their orders introduced hard currency back into the industry and went a long way to preventing the forecasted OPK collapse. Although pessimistic predictions continued to plague the OPK throughout the 1990s, the valuable export dollars provided the OPK the breathing space it needed to claw back its competitive advantage as an arms producer. That revival has been further underpinned by a new political commitment, various research and development initiatives, and the restoration of defence industry as a tool of Russian foreign policy. In order to gauge the future prospects for the OPK, it is necessary to examine the domestic and external drivers that have either underwritten its success to date or are still required to ensure its long term endurance. Domestically, continued success demands a closer collaboration between the OPK and the Russian armed forces. It also requires serious efforts to curb endemic corruption, further consolidation of the defence industry and continued development of the Russian domestic market for arms. Externally, the strength of the state arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, global market diversification and joint military ventures with strategic partner countries are essential ingredients for long term OPK success. Cultivating and maintaining the economic and political momentum vital for the OPK's progress will be a daunting undertaking for Russia. However, Russia's accomplishments in these key areas since 2000 suggest that continued success is a genuine prospect and that the OPK could potentially grow to be the proverbial 'phoenix from the ashes'. China and India constitute approximately eighty percent of the total Russian arms transfer market. Trading and cooperation with these two countries has provided Moscow with the finances to sustain its defence industry through continued orders and valuable finance for research and development programmes for military hardware. However, post 2015, the Chinese market will be nearing total saturation and the Indian market will have contracted somewhat, as the indigenous defence industries of these nations can be expected to usurp the demand for Russian equipment. This scenario, together with a more active foreign policy under Putin has seen Russia launch aggressive marketing campaigns into the Middle East, South East Asia and Latin America. The strategy has already begun to pay dividends with large contracts being signed by Algeria, Indonesia, and Venezuela. The Russians hope that large sales to these countries will trigger further sales within the respective regions. The realised or potential contracts for arms from Libya, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Mexico, and Brazil suggest that this strategy is producing the desired result. The short term future of the Russian OPK looks promising. The rising domestic defence order is beginning to challenge the export market as the OPK's most important customer. Meanwhile, exports will be safeguarded by continued foreign demand for niche Russian defence products such as cruise missiles and air defence systems as well as cost effective and user friendly Russian aircraft, ships, submarines and land systems. Flexible financing options offered by Rosoboronexport will stimulate demand in new markets such as Algeria and Indonesia and sustain the economic viability of the OPK for at least the next decade.

Abstract:
Master of Arts<br>Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work<br>Nadezda Shapkina<br>With the collapse of the socialist model in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991 which was followed by Civil War (1992-1997), Tajikistan has undergone profound social, economic, and political transformation. Persistent impoverishment, political and economic instability, and discrimination of ethnic minorities have resulted in out-migration of Tajik population to Russia. In this study, labor migration (survival driven, seasonal, and chain) is discussed. Even though Tajik migrants face challenges such as segregation, xenophobia, sexism, and intolerance working abroad, they continue to migrate to Russia in order to seek a better quality of life. This is closely linked to migration policy and regulations that have been implemented by the governments of these countries which allow free movement across the borders. Although these migration policies promote legal migration, they create favorable conditions for inequality (such as structural, social, and global) as well as illegal migratory flows. However, little scholarly work has been focused on how migration policy contributes to structural inequality and leads to illegal migration in the former Soviet Republics. In my study, I seek to add to the limited existing literature about these phenomena. I examine the social context of Tajik labor migration, legal framework, migration policy and regulations, and its implications. Specifically, I analyze the case of Tajikistan and Russia’s migration policies and regulations as they are proposed and implemented by governmental agencies in collaboration and consultation with civil society organizations (local and international) including the Tajik diasporas.

Su, Hua. "From love letters to digital technology: the mediation of modern Chinese romance." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1770.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a comparative study of letters and digital media as infrastructures of modern Chinese romance. It examines young Chinese lovers’ experiences with digital media in comparison with their forebears’ experiences with love letters in order to understand how the increased ease of communication shapes Chinese romantic relating. Based on historical documents and in-depth interviews, this dissertation argues that the Internet and mobile technology augment Chinese lovers’ capacities to contact each other over distance, to express emotions that are restrained by conventions, and to create private alcoves in public places. These augmented capacities alter various boundaries in and around romantic relationship and intensify Chinese lovers’ negotiation between individuality and relationship, between disclosure and concealment, and between the public and private realms of life. Specifically, young Chinese lovers are better able to maintain a continual sense of togetherness but have more difficulty protecting personal boundaries and being alone. They find it easier to articulate feelings that are untoward in face-to-face speech, but they also find it harder to prove the sincerity of love in text and to avoid confrontation in impulsive message exchange. They have more access to a private space, albeit virtual, and more chances to publicize their romantic lives, but by doing so they also contribute to diminished sociality in offline public spaces and have to rely on the kindness of strangers for privacy more than ever before. For young Chinese lovers, digital media promise the freedoms that are regulated and controlled by social institutions in their offline worlds, but seeking these freedoms via digital media poses chges to their relationships with themselves, with each other, and with the larger social and public worlds they live in. These chges for romantic relating, as this dissertation argues, manifest the problems of the physical and the material while digital media facilitate spiritual contact over distance. The boundaries of personal accessibility are rooted in the limitation of human attention and ultimately in human mortality; the problem of sincerity in verbalized love lies in the difficulty of invoking deeds as the culturally preferred signifier of love; private nooks in public spaces are problematic both because bodily presence in physical locales entails expectations of sociality and because information storage in virtual venues requires a material apparatus that is beyond the control of individuals. As digital media reduce physical distance as the obstacle to lovers’ spiritual contact, they also intensify the tension between the spiritual and the physical aspects of communication and relationships. Overall, this dissertation provides a tripartite approach to the study of mediation and sociality based on three dimensions of communication: contact, content, and context. It emphasizes the importance of examining the ways in which communication media enable individuals to connect with each other, to express themselves, and to privatize or publicize their relationships. This approach provides a holistic understanding of how media shape modern sociality and how that mediation contributes to the shift of social boundaries and changes in social etiquette. In addition, this study enriches the current understanding of emerging media, particularly personal communication technologies (PCTs), as a social-technological combination, and proposes the study of the combination in plural and contradictory forms. Methodologically, it suggests the significance of studying both the symbolic and material aspects of mediated communication and of examining various modes, modalities, and genres of mediated communication as the locale where the material channels of media and the symbolic meanings of interaction intersect.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to analyze the nature of relations between Armenia and Russia in the 2000s. Contrary to the dominant view that relations between these two countries could be labeled as strategic partnership, this thesis argues that these relations could be characterized as pragmatic cooperation. In fact, both countries having close relations in all fields and refraining from pursuing policies that might harm the other&rsquo<br>s interests in the 1990s, gave priority to their own national interests in the diplomatic and economic fields in the 2000s, while maintaining close cooperation in the security field. In the 2000s, Russia started to pursue a pragmatic foreign policy by improving its relations with Azerbaijan that has rich oil and natural gas reserves. Likewise, Armenia has also started to pursue a balanced foreign policy by enhancing its cooperation with the Western countries and international organizations in diplomatic and security fields in the same period. Moreover, Armenia also deepened its cooperation with Iran in the energy sector to decrease its energy dependence on Russia. Consequently, both Armenia and Russia have started to pursue pragmatic policies in diplomatic and economic fields to maximize their own national interests while maintaining close cooperation in security field. Therefore, bilateral relations between these two countries started to take more pragmatic character than a strategic partnership.
