Abstract:
I began my thesis with compact living as my starting point. I researched the way we live in cities today and learnt that 57% of Stockholm’s inhabitants live in a two bedroom and kitchen apartment or smaller. My aim is to create furniture modules that can enhance small apartments. I created three modules that incorporate all essential items of furniture; these modules can be adapted for any apartment. In order to show how the modules can be used I picked a small site in central Stockholm and allowed the house to be shaped by the apartments, the apartments are in turn shaped by the furniture.

Growing up in a bicultural household, navigating the F train as well as mountain creeks, studying culture and then participating in its production, these are some of the idiosyncrasies that I bring to my work. My investigations are rooted in combining a rediscovery of the sensuousness of the natural world and an investigation of the poetics of everyday life. Choosing materials and situations within the realm of the everyday, I'm interested in a transformation that suggests the infinite potential and worth in all things. The resulting objects have identities as complex as my own. They are ridiculous and serious, normal and magical, and confident in their awkwardness. Abstract:
This systematic literature review: ‘The Effectiveness of Parenting Programmes for Incarcerated Mothers on Parenting Outcomes, Parental Stress and Parental Self-Esteem’ explores the numerous variables impacting on the effectiveness of parenting programmes in the forensic setting. It is evident from the existing literature that research in this area is relatively new and in need of a more rigorous approach. The large scale project: ‘Fathers in Prison: The experience of parenting an Infant from Prison. An IPA Study’ involved interviewing 6 fathers in prison who had parented their infant during their custodial sentence. Analysis of the results revealed that this population invest greatly in their parenting on emotional, practical and cognitive levels. This has links to both psychological pain and psychological growth. Implications for practice are discussed.

Liautaud, Susan Elene. "Accountability in the French nonprofit sector : from the inside out." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2738/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to explain increasing accountability in the French nonprofit sector. The qualitative research investigates the hypothesis that engendering trust is the key rationale for increasing accountability. The research also explores inductively other potential rationales for increasing accountability (e.g. corporatisation, integration of international standards of accountability, donor pressure, and the media). US regulatory, self-regulatory, and voluntary models of accountability provide reference standards. The study targets 45 renowned French NPOs. 33 are members of a national independent accountability accreditation organisation (Comite de la Charte de Deontologie), and 12 comprise a control group. The driving voice is the perspective of the most senior leaders of respondent organisations, almost all executive directors, board Presidents, or board members. The theoretical framework centres on Henry Hansmann's theory of trust (derived from legal restrictions on profit distribution or the "nondistribution constraint') as an explanation for the origin and on-going efficacy of the nonprofit form. First establishing the relevance of Hansmann's demand side theory in France, the analysis then bridges Hansmann's rationale for the nonprofit organisational structure to analysis of how and why French NPOs supplement the intrinsic characteristics of that structure with accountability. Hansmann might call this organisational effort the "supply side." Finally, the emerging spectrum from Hansmann's trust to Lester Salamon's suggestion that accountability is the modern foundation for trust because the nondistribution constraint no longer suffices also frames the analysis. The proposed definition of accountability combines a general definition and an operationalised definition (derived from scholarly literature and best practice, respectively). The analysis highlights organisations' strategic assessment of quantitative/non-quantitative considerations in accountability-related decisions, including the impact of specified internal organisational variables and external contextual variables. The most oft-cited rationale for increasing accountability is ethical, effective management, followed by donor trust. Donor trust proves essential and fragile - irrespective of cited rationale for increasing accountability.

McMahon, Muireann. "Designed from the inside out : developing capacity for social sustainability in design through collaboration." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12121.

Full text
Abstract:
The paradigm of design is changing. Designers now need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to participate in the global move towards a sustainable future. The tenets of Sustainable Development and Design: economy and environment are being dealt with extensively in both practice and theory. The social elements, unfortunately, have proven more difficult to define and implement. The challenges arise as social sustainability deals with softer and more complex issues as diverse and unquantifiable as ethics, values, cultural diversity, holistic perspectives, collective and personal responsibility. The competencies needed to address these wicked problems are based in the realm of Social Sustainability and require a shift in how designers are taught as students and will subsequently practice as professionals. This thesis proposes that by introducing various models of collaboration into design education the capacity for responsible design practice can be developed. Arguably, by capitalising on the process of collaboration a culture of individual and collective sharing can be encouraged leading to new knowledge and openness to multi-disciplinarity, holistic perspectives and diverse cultural backgrounds. Across a Delphi Study and four consecutive phases of Action Research, the competencies for social sustainability in design are identified and their emergence evaluated through practical collaborative projects in an educational setting. From the panel of twenty-one design experts the Delphi Study developed a construct for social sustainability in design, as well as an initial Framework of the key competencies. These two tools were then used to underpin the planning, implementation and subsequent analysis of the four Action Research phases. The pragmatic nature of Action Research allowed for continuous iteration and development, where data gathered through each phase informed the proceeding phase so as to fix on an approach that is both realisable and realistic. This thesis does not offer a panacea solution but rather a pathway towards achieving the necessary changes in design practice. The findings clearly show that building capacity for responsible design practice is not a simple or one size fits all approach, as each individual experience is different. The construct, framework of competencies (and their interconnections) along with the guidelines for effective collaboration, provide a starting point that can be built upon, evolve and progress as the debate around sustainability becomes more clearly defined. Over time these generic design skills can be honed and refined to meet previously unmet societal challenges.

Abstract:
Despite the tremendous achievement in economic development over the past four decades since independence, Malaysia is facing a problem of environmental degradation at a rapid pace. In searching for Malaysian approach to alter this trend, this thesis is written against a background of concern for a balanced development in economy and social wellbeing and simultaneously preserving the environment. The aim of the study is to identify an alternative approach in managing the local environment for health, starting from a value position of regard for local knowledge and abilities, and for scientists and administrators working together with local knowledge and abilities, and for scientists and administrators working together with local communities in their natural settings. Findings from this study offer a range of lessons for those who wish to integrate local and scientific knowledge. The research approach proved capable of documenting the separate realities of the place-based and the knowledge-based communities within a common interpretative framework. The place-based communities held realistic interpretations of their capacity to contribute to local sustainable development, distinct from one another and also distinct from the same events as perceived by the scientific community. The conclusion is drawn that each needs the other for any effective local application of scientific findings or government support. Finally, this has not been a study of top-down or bottom up but from the 'inside-out' with a small study of the 'outside-in.' It offers another perspective and an extra set of tools or strategies for the professionals' community to work with local communities in their environmental management for health. The desired outcome would be for the local communities to contribute as a full partner to the dominant scientific studies in designing local management strategies.

Abstract:
This thesis is a description and analysis of various types of hegemonic changes that have occurred and are occurring in Otavalo, Ecuador. These changes are part of a process of change that extends back in time to 1483 and probably much earlier. Woven into the tapestry of this work is the history of the Inca and Spanish conquests in the area of Otavalo/Imbabura. I exemplify that cultural and ideological changes due to earlier conquests were brought about primarily through the use of extreme force. There was great resistance to Inca and Spanish hegemony. The glaring difference in the present day western hegemonic conquest is that there is little resistance to this form of hegemony. The forces of western hegemony are permeating Otavaleno culture not through armed force but through technology and western ideology.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the impact of the Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN) initiative on the City of Springfield, Ohio. Launched in August, 2010, SPN adopted an asset-based and resident-driven strategy to transform vulnerable neighborhoods by ensuring the academic and social success of the youth within a defined geographic locality. SPN was conceived as an initiative that would eventually impact all of Springfield by engaging citizens and youth to envision and achieve a preferred future story. The early piloting of the model has taken place in partnership with Lincoln Elementary School and its attendance zone, which represents a 110-block area surrounding the school. This case analysis has been undertaken in order to reflect on the progress made and the lessons learned from the initial six years of the project and consider how these findings could be integrated into a scalable model that could influence other neighborhoods within Springfield.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine key features within the cultural context in a Canadian Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) environment as experienced by nurses, and to identify what these influences are and how they shape nurses’ intentions to remain at critically ill children’s bed-sides for the duration of their careers. This is a qualitative study which follows a critical ethnographic approach. Over 20 hours of observation and face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted. Approximately one third of the nursing population at the research site PICU were interviewed (N=31). Participants describe a complex process of becoming an expert PICU nurse that involved several stages. By the time participants became experts in this PICU they believed they had significantly narrowed the power imbalance that exists between nursing and medicine. This study illuminates the role both formal and informal education plays in breaking the power barrier for nurses in the PICU. This level of expertise and mutual respect between professions aids in retaining nurses in the PICU. The lack of autonomy and/or respect shown to nurses by administrators appears to be one of the major stressors in nurses’ working lives and can lead to attrition from the PICU. Family Centred Care (FCC) is practiced in paediatrics and certainly accentuated in the PICU as there is usually only one patient assigned per nurse, who thus afforded the time to provide comprehensive care to both the child and the family. This is considered one of the satisfiers for nurses in the PICU and tends to encourage retention of nurses in the PICU. However, FCC was found to be an inadequate term to truly encompass the type of holistic care provided by nurses in the PICU.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the role of side openings in museums, in relation to users’ visiting experience. The research particularly focuses on the feature of view, analysing if the connection with the outsideenvironment provided through windows, results in an enriched museum’s experience and enhancedcultural identity. The analysis is based on the case study of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, wherethree rooms with stronger, moderate and weaker connection with the outside environment have beenevaluated through visitors’ surveys. Results show that the public revealed considerable awarenessabout windows and their landscape and yet the view was rarely considered a distracting feature. Theavailable literature on daylight in museums hardly includes view among the acknowledged daylightbenefits, and, also due to the difficulty in controlling the daylight intake, side openings have gained abad reputation in the museum field. However, as in the analysed case study, the view was consideredby many as an enriching part of the visiting experience, this thesis calls for further research on therole of view in exhibition rooms and on how to include it properly in museums’ design.

Abstract:

All over the globe, nonprofit organizations aim to strengthen communities while struggling with the restraints of limited resources. This research study involved Participatory Action Research (PAR) to examine how to build internal capacity in one such organization in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. This study was a partnership between me (the academic researcher) and organizational members and stakeholders of the Baobab Home. Through interviews and meetings, the project focus involved creating written contracts. Over the course of five meetings, contracts were researched, policies and procedures were discussed, and formal contracts were created in Swahili. Findings include a discussion of the role of the outside researcher in the PAR process, as well as the value of partnering with a cultural guide. This study also provides a look at how to use PAR to build capacity within organizations. Finally, there is a review of the project itself, its successes, and its lessons learned.

Lee, Wan-Chen. "From the Inside Out – Application of the Mass Balance Model for PM Exposure Assessment in Residential Settings Under the Influences of Indoor and Outdoor Factors." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23205179.

Full text
Abstract:
The application of the widely used mass balance model in determining portable air purifier (PAP) effectiveness in particulate matter (PM) removal was not validated in occupied residential settings. The corresponding size-resolved information and measurements for the model parameters and PAP effectiveness were also limited to better characterize human exposure to indoor PM. Additionally, effects of ambient factors, such as meteorology, and their long-term impacts on occupant indoor exposure to outdoor PM was unclear. We achieved well-mixed environment and steady state of PM concentrations that met the mass balance model assumptions. Size-resolved particle deposition rate was determined using non-linear mixed effects model, whereas linear mixed effects model was used to estimate the slope between the measured and modeled effectiveness for validation purpose. To evaluate the impact of ambient factors on PM exposure, we assembled data from two cohorts in the greater Boston area, assessing the monthly and long-term effect of temperature and other meteorology on Sr. Long-term meteorology was projected using 15 weather models for the past and future 20 years to estimate Sr for the corresponding periods with mixed effects models. Both particle deposition rate and portable air purifier effectiveness were highly particle size-dependent. Filtration was found to be the dominant removal mechanism for submicrometer particles, whereas deposition could play a more important role in ultrafine particle removal. There was reasonable agreement between measured and modeled effectiveness with size-resolved slopes ranging from 1.11±0.06 to 1.25±0.07 (mean±SE), except for particles <35 nm. Sr was found to be a robust measure of indoor exposure to outdoor PM, and temperature was its significant predictor. Seasonal effect of temperature was much more dominant when compared to long-term effect on Sr, which differed in the whole population and the subpopulation of naturally ventilated homes. However, long-term temperature effect was small, with maximum of <10% for summer Sr compared to the past. Findings from the studies improved characterization of indoor PM exposure. The study design and methods can be used in the future to better understand exposure scenarios and their correlation to health effects in other homes or populations.

Strickland, Alex. "Governance and accountability in the modern local authority : an exploratory analysis of views from inside and out, with particular reference to outsourcing and partnership working." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2015. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/26898/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand just what governance looks like to practitioners themselves and how it works in practice. It recognises the need for modern executive and political leaders to provide strong place shaping leadership, in a context where resources are tight, outsourcing is viewed as a means to an end and joint working is considered essential to deliver complex cross-cutting policy objectives. As such, it will appeal to the wider local government community. The departure point for the thesis is the crisis of social democracy identified as 'overload' in the mid 1970s and the New Right policy prescription of privatisation/marketisation proposed to resolve that. the subsequent hollowing out of the state together with the interlinked nature of public policy (and the introduction of changing governance forms such as combined authorities) only served to made governance landscape even more complex. The thesis uses interpretive methodology to conduct a thematic analysis of governance and accountability using two in depth case studies in which elected members and officials have participated. the thesis makes a contribution to knowledge by concluding that Governance has three strands to it - Place Shaping, Service Delivery and Community Leadership. It is considered complex for a number of reasons ranging from layered reform and incremental policy making on the one hand to the need to work in partnership to achieve complex public policy objectives on the other. Notwithstanding recent reforms, the architecture of governance in the UK remains highly centralised. This has an adverse impact on economic performance. Devolution of powers and funding to local authorities that have the capacity to cope with them, should be coupled with Institutional reforms to create a strategic level of governance designed to facilitate infrastructure provision, economic renewal and joined up public service delivery. Keeping these arrangements accountable is of central importance and it is concluded that this requires as a minimum, the effective operation of the statutory Scrutiny function. This requires that elected members are provided with a toolkit in the form of a positive operating culture, appropriate statutory powers and sufficient funding. In addition however, there is a need to consider how to broaden democratic engagement with a view to increasing levels of political participation, so as to develop a more active notion of citizenship going forward.

Abstract:

This thesis discuss the matter of non-profit-making associations as a self regulatory technique out of a theoretical concept of power. The object for the study is the non-profit-making association Ditt Nya Hageby, which work in the neigborhood of Hageby, a suburb to Norrköping. In the study the association is placed in a contemporary postmodern social context and analyzed through semi- structured qualitative interviews, accordingly to hermeneutical method, with five active members of the association as informants. The association consists of members who lives in the neighborhood. Together with a hired organizer they realizes their own ideas in to projects which unquestionably improves the social and physical enviroment in Hageby. The author of this thesis, however argues their activities also can be looked at in a normative way concerning social order in a non-compelling sence. Thus the author means that the association, in this particular sense, could be understood theoretically by implying Michel Foucaults govermentality concept. In order to reach the final conclusion the informants experience concerning sense of community and identity in relation to Ditt Nya Hageby is analyzed. Further theoretical framework is provided by Ferdinand Tönnies concepts of gemeinschaft/gesellschaft and Jürgen Habermas civil publicity. The paper also accounts for what the authorbelieves to be the ideological/methodological basis for Ditt Nya Hageby’s activities by presenting and discussing the"from the inside out"-perspective which is recomended by John P. Kretzman&John.L McKnight regarding the reconstruction, in a wider sense, of exposed neigborhoods.

Abstract:
The orders of linkages that stabilise evolving media worlds are far from obvious. Often undertaken in media ‘laboratories’, the collaborative processes which combine a range of disciplines to develop media worlds are also far from straightforward. Enablers and constraints are as likely to be non-human as they are the people associated with the project. Plugs, wires, switches, protocols and standards - things whose detail can be mind numbingly boring - all have to be worked into effective and stable sets of associations. This thesis describes two knowledge pathways that track through such a project. The first describes the development of a prototype for a website, imagined as a portal for a range of interests around children and media in New Zealand/Aoteoroa. As media worlds are continually being reconfigured and as data circulates across increasingly linked access technologies, many non-government organisations are migrating their work to ‘the web’. ‘The Media Clearinghouse’ project was one of these. Latour’s analytical concept of immutable mobiles provides a way to make sense of some of the work observed whilst his direction to ‘simply follow’ worlds of interest provided the methodological challenge. The second pathway, traces the bibliographic threads of literatures that come from the descriptive genres of Science Technology Studies (STS). Significant amongst these are Leigh Star and Geoffrey Bowker who have elaborated the concept of boundary objects and infrastructures. Star and Griesemer’s seminal description of the Museum of Invertebrate Zoology is compared with a description of an early laboratory by Bruno Latour. These and other writers elaborate on methods that offer ways to render visible the messy, chaotic performances of design and invention. They follow inscriptions - tables, lists, maps, sketches and so on. These things work between the micro and the macro and enable very huge terrains to be assembled in small, ordered spaces. The thesis assembles a list of methods that have some utility for following and describing web design work and perhaps, other information worlds. Having followed and described this writer’s work through the invention of the prototype it is argued that a combinative method has successfully enabled a description that moves in and out of a new information ‘laboratory’.

White, Ruby Jane. "Inside out : young children learning within nature." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42052.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to expand understanding of the potential value of the natural outdoors as a learning environment for young children. Within the frame of The United Nations Rights of the Child and social constructivist learning theory, this qualitative case study explores young children’s perspectives through their self chosen points of interest within the natural outdoors of their early learning setting. The research site was within an urban/rural interface community in Southwestern Coastal British Columbia. Eight child participants between 3-5 years of age assumed the role of participant researchers to create digital photographs of their outdoor interests, which served as the primary data source. These photographs were supported by video recordings of the children’s ordinary moments outdoors and researcher field notes. The data was coded and categorized using the constant comparison method, resulting in 7 categories and 3 subcategories that revealed the children’s primary interests and points of connection outdoors, as being within and between nature, manufactured objects and people. These points of connection were then merged and discussed within the broader theme of Interfaces and Connections. The discussion includes: categories of interest, contrasts and interactions as they relate to the child/nature literature, early learning practice, children’s rights and social constructivist theory. Also noted is the children’s use of multiple perspectives and their self chosen verbal silences. The limitation and strengths of the research are acknowledged and followed by implications for practice and invitations for future research.

Abstract:

In this document I present three tools for reflective, creative thinking: Pillow-Talk, the NeverEnding Drawing Machine and Calliope. These tools make use of the "distorted mirror" metaphor for self-reflection. They are designed to debunk myths of creativity as an acquired faculty and instead promote creative apperception and flexible thinking. Pillow-Talk is designed to prime dream recall and facilitate capture through voice recording. Considering the dream an aesthetic experience we all undertake, where the dreamer is free to test knowledge liberated from physical and moral constraints, its aim is to promote flexibility in levels of thought. The NeverEnding Drawing Machine and Calliope endorse flexibility in vehicles of thought through co-creative and collaborative play. One can incorporate any object found in the environment as a tool or material, thus making contextualized and personalized creations. They promote cross-cultural and cross-generational co-creation as the echo from which to recenter perception.

Doctoral thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Industrial Marketing and Industrial Economics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-7252.

Abstract:

Changes in sectors and industries have brought new challenges to corporations as well as been important driving forces for the dynamics in strategy at the corporate level. With the dramatic developments of the 1990’s in mind, such as multilateral free-trade agreements, liberalization, privatization, sharp industry growth/decline, increased competition and globalization, in particular within the telecom and the construction industry, this study contributes to describing and understanding strategic change at the corporate level as well as changes in the division of work within value chains. Strategy is defined as intentions, decisions and actions that relate to bundling and unbundling at different strategic levels, aiming to establish and reestablish a value chain position. Thus, outsourcing, M&As, modularization and systems development and sales are important strategic components which are examined from a value chain perspective. From a value chain perspective, the purpose of this study is to describe and understand strategic change at the corporate level in the telecom and construction industries during the 1990’s. More specifically this study shall contribute to describing and understanding (i) the dynamics of and between M&As, outsourcing, modularization and systemization, as well as (ii) industrial and financial drivers to strategic change.

The conclusions describe strategic change from a value chain perspective using three descriptive patterns, including an increasing degree of specialization and need for interorganizational coordination across the value chain. In addition, outsourcing and modularization of systems and an increased scope of offering through systemization and BOT-projects, result in the fact that due to M&As the horizontal boundary of the firm sometimes goes beyond the industry scope while the vertical scope is often narrowed through outsourcing. The conclusions also focus on understanding the content of strategic change, that is to say the dynamics of and between mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing, modularization and system sales. These findings are summarized in nine explanatory patterns. These patterns show that the strategic decisions of bundling and unbundling at the corporate and functional level through mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing, systemization and modularization are guided by an industrial as well as a financial logic. By considering the descriptive and explanatory patterns found this study, the conclusions also include what to expect during the next decade with regard to corporate strategy from a value chain perspective in five predictive patterns.

Abstract:
NOx sensors have become salient components in the development of efficient exhaust after treatment system for heavy duty vehicles in the past few years. When the accumulated water inside the silencer splashes on to the NOx sensor, it can cause permanent cracks in the sensor. To protect the sensor from this mode of failure, a dew point strategy is developed at Scania. This is important to predict when it is safe to switch on the NOx sensor without causing any harm to it. But the strategy currently includes only the phase transfer phenomena and neglects the effect of the water blow out phenomena inside the silencer. To investigate the effect of water blow out, an experimental test method is designed and the experiments are conducted at different locations in the silencer. The results from the experiments shows that the effect of water blow out is certainly an important factor to develop a better dew point strategy model. For a selected location, the quantity of water remaining after blow out and the time taken for the blow out phase are collected as data from the experiments. A mathematical model for the water blow out phenomena is developed in MATLAB. The model estimates the maximum amount of water which could be present in all the subvolumes of the silencer considering the effect of water blow out. The model is verified with the experimental data for a Scania CAS1 silencer. Calibration guidelines for the developed blow out model are also documented in this report.

Abstract:
This research examines the pre-purchase behaviour of families with children in the museum sector of the leisure market. It focuses on two related research questions. First, how do families with children make decisions to visit museums and second, what role do children play in such decisions? Previous quantitative evidence has found that family leisure and holiday choices tend to be joint decisions and that children exert a significant influence. Museums are an important subset of leisure choice and here studies have uncovered multiple reasons why families visit museums including child-related ones. However few studies have examined non-Western families and investigated the process involved in making such decisions with the focus to study a family including children as a whole unit.
