Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California<br>The strip-chart recorder has evolved from a simple pen-writing instrument to an instrumentation platform. Today's Telemetry Recording Workstations not only provide a permanent hard copy of telemetry data, but also offer high resolution videographic displays with real-time point-of-writing representation, the ability to efficiently store data digitally, and customizable user interfaces. Host control and digital data transfer can be achieved using Ethernet networks, making the instrument an integral part of a telemetry system. The Telemetry Recording Workstation is a fundamental instrument for any telemetry application or installation, due to its abilities to display, print and store real-time data.

Abstract:
The managing of complex business processes, which are changed due to globalization, calls for the development of powerful information systems that offer generic process modeling and process execution capabilities. Even though contemporary information systems are more and more utilized in enterprises, their actual impact in automatizing complex business process is still limited by the difficulties encountered in design phase. Actually this design phase is time consuming, often subjective and incomplete. In the scope of this study, a reverse approach is followed. Instead of starting with process design, the method of discovering interesting patterns from the navigation traces is taken as basis and a new data analysis methodology named &ldquo<br>From-to Chart Based Process Discovery&rdquo<br>is proposed. In this hybrid methodology &ldquo<br>from-to chart&rdquo<br>, which is fundamentally dedicated to material handling issues on production floor, is used as the front-end to monitor the transitions among activities of a realistic event log and convert these raw relations into optimum activity sequence. Then a revised version of process mining, which is the back-end of this methodology, upgrades optimum activity sequence into process model.

Abstract:
Technical analysis as a sophisticated form of forecasting technique has a varying popularity in the academic and business world. In the past, users were sceptical about technical trading rules and their performance. This is substantiated by the acceptance of the Efficient Market Hypothesis and mixed empirical findings about technical analysis in widely cited studies. The flag pattern is seen as one of the most significant spread chart patterns amongst stock market charting analysts. The present research validates a trading rule based on the further development of flag pattern recognition. The research question concentrates on whether technical analysis applying the flag pattern can outperform international stock markets indices and prove the inefficiency of these markets. The markets observed are represented by the corresponding indices DAX (Germany), DJIA (United States) and IBEX (Spain). The design of the trading rule presents several changes with respect to previous academic works: The wide sample used when considering intraday data, together with the confiuration of some of the variables and the consideration of risk, concludes that the trading rule provides greater positive risk-adjusted returns than the buy-and-hold strategy which is used as a benchmark. Venkatasamy, Vijayaragavan. "Optimization approach to cell formation using from-between chart and development of GA based cellular layouts." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/2543.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally GT problems focus on the grouping aspects and fail to integrate material handling part in facility layout design. It is necessary to consider the flow between machines while forming machine cells and evaluate grouping based on flow and operational load factors. But after forming cells, machines have to be placed inside a layout to minimize the material handling distance. There are not many approaches which consider the actual volume flow between machines while grouping and the related handling distances while placing machine cells. Typical GT based cell formation problems stop after grouping cells and evaluating the quality of the grouped cells. This thesis develops a comprehensive cell formation model, which integrates the GT philosophy with a facility layout problem using From-between flow matrix as a tool. This approach forms machine cells using a Non-Linear Integer Programming (NLIP) optimization model, assigns parts to cells using a new heuristic algorithm, evaluates cell grouping using a novel grouping efficiency measure and places machine cells in a layout space using a GA approach. Known case studies from literature are selected and tested using the developed procedure. Results obtained show a reduction in the intercell flow, high grouping efficiency and minimal material handling costs after machine placement when compared with the existing models.<br>Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Nayak, Chandan N. "Solutions to dynamic facility layout problems: Development of Dynamic From Between Chart (DFBC) and its applications to continuous layout modeling." Diss., Wichita State University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1493.

Full text
Abstract:
Manufacturing facility layout is determined by minimizing the Material Handling (MH) cost associated with the manufacturing of products. A manufacturing facility operates in a dynamic environment where the production rates and product mix are continuously changing. In addition, the introduction of new products/machines and removal of existing products/machines render the existing layout completely unreliable to yield improved productivity. Hence, it is often necessary to analyze the current layout and redesign the layout in accordance with the constantly changes in demand. Existing methods for the analysis of redesign uses multiple, static, and tabular from-to charts. These charts assume and exhibit the timely demand as a discrete invariable quantity. A new tool, “Dynamic From Between Chart (DFBC)” that allows easier visualization of the changes in product rates and mix is introduced and developed in this research. DFBC models the production rate changes using a continuous function. The development process of the new tool, the formulation of the cost function and its application to the solution of Dynamic Facility Layout Problems (DFLP) for multiple time periods is presented with the use of a case study. The solution methodology uses a tradeoff analysis between increased MH cost and the rearrangement cost for the transition from existing layout to a new layout. To further authenticate and strengthen the developed methodology, real world case studies are considered and evaluated. Importance of any department flow over the other departments (crossover) occurs only if there is variation in the flow volumes between relative departments. In previous research, the redesign is carried out at the end of specific time period in a given time horizon. In most instances, the need for redesign or change in flow occurs somewhere during the period and identifying such crossover points will assist to yield better savings. In addition, the exact time at which the layout should be modified can be determined. For large size problems, the number of crossover points sited in DFBC will be large and evaluating each of these points to identify the point of change in layout will be tedious and time consuming. Thus, along with the methodology to identify the crossover points a concept of Upper bound and Lower bound (UB–LB) to discover the set of redesign points which may warrant a change in layout has been developed. Further analysis is necessary to detect the point(s) that initiate the change. Limiting the solution space facilitates the evaluation of large size problems by reducing and simplifying the computation. Multiple case studies are considered and evaluated to indicate the applicability of the concept. It is also evident in current manufacturing paradigms that the introduction of new products/machines and removal of existing products/machines in-between the time horizon induces huge flow variations between departments. Previous research on DFLP does not deal with models which adopt such scenarios. In this research the application of DFBC to analyze the impact of introduction of new products/machines and removal of existing products/machines in between the time horizon is considered. The ability of the DFBC to address such scenarios is evaluated using a case study. Finally, the possible extensions of this research are listed along with the conclusions on the proposed approach.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.)--Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering<br>"December 2007."

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Johnson, Catherine A. "The application of Raman spectroscopy and related techniques to coal chars taken from a slagging gasifier." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1987. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/31931.

Abstract:
The work described in this thesis falls into two sections. (1) Data derived from Raman spectroscopy have been compared with data obtained from other techniques (X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy) in order to establish the nature of the fundamental information available from the Raman spectra available from coals and coal chars. It has thus been established that the Raman spectra of the materials examined are dependent upon the sizes of the aromatic carbon layers of which they are composed, and this in turn is determined by the maximum heat treatment temperature to which the materials have been subjected. This relationship has been investigated in detail, in order that it may be used to measure the maximum heat treatment temperature of a coal char of unknown thermal history. It has been established that preparation conditions other than temperature, such as pressure, atmosphere, heating rate, soak time and tar addition have a negligible effect on this relationship, and thus its general applicability to the study of chars of unknown thermal history has been established. (2) Both Raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy have been applied to coal chars produced in, and subsequently removed from, the British Gas Slagging Gasifier. Optical microscopy was used to assess the homogeneity or heterogeneity of the chars; Raman spectroscopy was then applied to the homogeneous chars, and thermal profiles within the gasifier were established for several gasifier runs.

Abstract:
Spanning the first seven centuries of Christianity, this paper explores how Eastern Christian and Byzantine hymn chant was developed alongside pagan and Jewish worship traditions around the Near East. Comparison of hymns by Christian composers such as St. Romanos the Melodist and pagan poetry reveals many similarities in the types of metaphorical imagery used in both religious expressions. Common in Christian hymn texts, well-known metaphors, like the “Light of God,” are juxtaposed with pagan mythological gods, such as Apollo and Helios. This paper attempts to explain how and why Christians appropriated and adopted ancient pagan imagery into the burgeoning musical tradition of Christian hymn singing.

Abstract:
In this Master thesis the key discussion is how to make dynamic informal conversations comprehensible to a computer system. The discussion is at large centered towards the distributed persistent real-time multi-player computer game Worlds. In this thesis we discuss the important aspects of communication and collaboration in computer games, and how these affect the the formalization of communicated information into computable data. The discussion of this thesis is based on several kinds of sources; empirical studies of games, discussions with players of multi-player computer games, meetings with a game designer and a game programmer and forum activities on a message board for independent game developers. Beside this the use of academic literature and the design of an actual computer game, are also brought together to create a platform for thought and discussion. This thesis is an attempt to bring reflection and analysis into the craft of computer game making, as well as to bring aspects of game design into the world of academics. The result of this thesis leads to a design suggestion of the communication and agreement creation system of the game Worlds. We find our discussion and our design, interesting and important, as an object for further analysis, discussions and thoughts.<br>for more info visit: www.enormousgames.com

Abstract:
This study analyzes negative particle variation (i.e., the variable presence or absence of the negative particle ne) in synchronous French chat discourse within a labovian-inspired framework. Selected morphosyntactic, lexical, and phonological constraints are considered. Multivariate analyses performed by GoldVarb 2001 revealed that subject type (i.e., NP, [- overt] subject environment, pronoun) and the phonological environment preceding the position of neregardless of its presence or absenceare determining factors in the variation. In addition, discursive-pragmatic effect was explored in a sub-sample of data. The results indicate that ne is seldom present in verbal negation during explanatory discourse style, yet it is very likely to be retained in ludic, emphatic, and proverbial styles.

Abstract:
In communication systems, one of the biggest challenges is that the information encoded by the emitter is always modified before reaching the receiver, who has to process this altered information in order to recover the intended message. In acoustic communication particularly, the transmission of sound through the environment is a major source of signal degradation, caused by attenuation, absorption and reflections, all of which lead to decreases in the signal relative to the background noise. How animals deal with the need for exchanging information in spite of constraining conditions has been the subject of many studies either at the emitter or at the receiver's levels. However, a more integrated research about auditory scene analysis has seldom been used, and is needed to address the complexity of this process. The goal of my research was to use a transversal approach to study how birds adapt to the constraints of long distance communication by investigating the information coding at the emitter's level, the propagation-induced degradation of the acoustic signal, and the discrimination of this degraded information by the receiver at both the behavioral and neural levels. Taking into account the everyday issues faced by animals in their natural environment, and using stimuli and paradigms that reflected the behavioral relevance of these challenges, has been the cornerstone of my approach. Focusing on the information about individual identity in the distance calls of zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata, I investigated how the individual vocal signature is encoded, degraded, and finally discriminated, from the emitter to the receiver. This study shows that the individual signature of zebra finches is very resistant to propagation-induced degradation, and that the most individualized acoustic parameters vary depending on distance. Testing female birds in operant conditioning experiments, I showed that they are experts at discriminating between the degraded vocal signatures of two males, and that they can improve their ability substantially when they can train over increasing distances. Finally, I showed that this impressive discrimination ability also occurs at the neural level: we found a population of neurons in the avian auditory forebrain that discriminate individual voices with various degrees of propagation-induced degradation without prior familiarization or training. The finding of such a high-level auditory processing, in the primary auditory cortex, opens a new range of investigations, at the interface of neural processing and behavior

A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Information Management, specialization in Geographic Information Systems<br>In this thesis a methodology for the systematic geometric analysis and modeling of pre-Mercator nautical charts is proposed and tested, aiming at contributing to better understand their geometric properties and methods of construction. The suggested approach involves the application of a series of cartometric techniques: georeferencing, on the basis of a sample of control points of known geographic coordinates; the interpolation of the geographical graticules implicit to the representations; the assessment of scales of distance and latitude; the assessment of the navigational accuracy, by comparing the latitudes, directions and distances measured on the charts with the corresponding exact values, affected by magnetic declination; and the identification of the routes underlying the charts’ construction. A numerical model was developed using the concept of ‘multimensional scaling’, here generalized to distances and directions measured on a spherical Earth, to simulate the main geometric features of the charts. To estimate the spatial distribution of the magnetic declination in various times two sources were used: the historical observations made by D. João de Castro in 1538 and 1541, and a recent geomagnetic model.

However, reviewing entire patient details is time-consuming. This paper discusses the alternative method to reduce the burden of physicians by using natural language processing technologies to extract the cardiovascular disease risk factors from EMR. This research uses cTAKES, MetaMap and CRFs sequence labeling model to analyze the clinical narrative document, then uses a filter to identify the target words which are related to cardiovascular disease risk factors. SVM classifiers are then used to identify the polarity and subject of a target word. Finally, risk factor decision module identifies the status of each risk factor. Experimental results showed that the performance of proposed method is better than that of cTAKES system. The Micro-averaged F1-scores of target word detection with polarity identification and target word detection with subject identification are 0.8514 and 0.8977, respectively. If only considering the correct identified target words, the performance of polarity identification and subject identification modules are 0.9656 and 0.9970, respectively. The overall performance of risk factor extraction system is 0.9209.

Then use the design steps of transform analysis or transaction analysis respectively to transform DFD into structure chart. However, neither the design steps nor demarcation between transform flow and transaction flow is clear and definite enough. So different system analysts, according to various understandings of processes of DFD, would have different opinions and get different transformed structure charts while facing the same DFD. It is not appropriate for computer to automatically understand processes and make decision. These situations bring difficulty of automatic transformation, or unreasonable results of transformation. In view of above, this paper provides a new set of design steps with characteristic of graph. Through the extension of DFD symbology, analyzing the characteristic of graph of DFD, and part of design heuristic, we decompose DFD and then involve the essence of transform analysis and transaction analysis to make a series of definite design steps. Because the set of design steps that provided by this paper is definite, it makes the automatic transforming of computer possible. Furthermore, the set of design steps involves design heuristic and the essence of transform analysis and transaction analysis, so the result of transformation is reasonable and acceptable for been used to write a tool of CASE in future. Besides, this paper also provides a set of algorithms that corresponding to the set of design steps to explain the feasibility of automation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中原大學<br>資訊工程研究所<br>98<br>The prediction of stock prices helps the investor to make a good decision. However, the discovery of effective rules from the stock data is the greatest challenge, which is also the goal of this thesis. Our approach adopts K-charts to represent the stock oscillation and a particular oscillation is a consecutive sequence of K-charts with various types. With the analysis of how these sequences influence the future stock prices in different price intervals, we can create effective rules for future trend prediction. When the recent prices satisfy the antecedents of our rules, we suggest the investor to buy or sell the stock and continue to monitor the stock oscillation. Moreover, at the right moment, we also suggest the investor to make a profit or stop a loss. Experiment results show that our rules can achieve the precision 71% on average. In the simulated operations, our investment strategy indeed helps the investor to make a profit. Even when the stop-loss point is set, among all the suggestions, the percentage of making a profit can still achieve 60% on average

Abstract:
An investigation was done on the methods used by performers of classical flute music to improve their flute tone. A literature study was done and a methodology created. This resulted in detailed dissection and then discussion of the various aspects that influence flute tone. Thereafter a series of practice charts were developed, which can be used to guide performers, students and teachers in their experiment to improve and diversify flute tone. The key areas of flute tone that were examined are: embouchure, lip flexibility, vibrato and tone colour. It has been found that different methods work for different people to improve their flute tone, and therefore personal experimentation is necessary in order to achieve the required tone, which also depends on personal taste.<br>Dissertation (MMus (Performing Art))--University of Pretoria, 2007.<br>Music<br>MMus<br>unrestricted
