Abstract:
As humanity moves into the future, the demand for new electronic devices increases. Flexible electronics that could be bendable, wearable, and/or biocompatible are more desired and, fortunately, closer to our grasp than ever. In order to produce these new devices, electronic materials not based on ridged, brittle crystals are needed. One candidate for these new electronics are organic electronic materials. Organic electronic materials have the potential to lead to devices that are flexible, simple to produce and that can take advantage of state-of-the-art processes like non-linear optics, spintronics and singlet fission. In order to access these exciting new devices, however, a better understanding of the type of conjugated organic molecules on which they will be based is needed. This dissertation explores the expansion of the indenofluorene project from a rotation student’s small spin off to an examination of a full class of materials. First, this document details the synthesis of donor-acceptor-donor triads using indenofluorene starting material, the dione, as the acceptor portion. What follows is an in-depth examination of the aromatic and antiaromatic properties of the class of materials we deemed diarenoantiaromatics. The computational techniques used are expanded along with the antiaromatic core of each molecule in order to evaluate the diradical character of the core expanded molecules being synthesized by my lab mates. Finally, the synthesis and characterization of a nine ring, linear dianthracenoindacene and the progress toward the thirteen ring dipentacenoindacene isomers are described.
10000-01-01

Abstract:
This Thesis is aimed at the study of a family of icosahedral symmetry polyoxometalates: the so-called Keplerates. Polyoxometalates are inorganic anionic clustters composed of MOn units, where M represents a transition metal atom usually at its highest state of oxidation Mo(VI), W(VI), V(V)...). On one hand, the electronic structure of Keplerates is studied from a Density Functional Theorey (DFT) point of view. Furthermore, the interaction between the Mo132 capsule and its inner ligands has been analyzed. On the other hand, in collaboration with both experimental and theoretical groups, a formation mechanism for the Mo132 capsule is proposed, based on Raman espectroscopy data. Part of the information achieved by DFT has been used to obtain the parameters required in order to perform Molcular Dynamics simulations regarding the behaviour of the Mo132 macro-ion in aqueous solution in the presence of different cations (focusing on the relevance of the hydrophobic character of teh cation), as well as the effects that temperature has on the system.

Abstract:

In this project a web-based system called 3DPOPS have been designed, developed and implemented. The system creates initial 3D structures of oligosaccharides according to user input data and is intended to be integrated with an automatized 3D prediction system for saccharides. The web interface uses a novel approach with a dynamically updated graphical representation of the input carbohydrate. The interface is embedded in a web page as a Java applet. Both expert and novice users needs are met by informative messages, a familiar concept and a dynamically updated graphical user interface in which only valid input can be created.

A set of test sequences was collected from the CarbBank database. An initial structure to each sequence could be created. All contained the information necessary to serve as starting points in a conformation search carried out by a 3D prediction system for carbohydrates.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis has been to develop systems capable of responding to external stimuli, based on photochromic units. The goal of such a quest is to increase the complexity of devices and synthetic molecular machines. With the goal of developing more complex artificial devices and machines, we have realised systems containing multiple molecular switches. For the realisation of this thesis, new multi-photochromic systems, or photochromes/nanomaterials hybrids containing azobenzene, diarylethene or spiropyran moieties have been realised and studied. Firstly, we focused on multi-azobenzene systems capable of undergoing large geometric rearrangements during photoisomerisation, as they may be used in the future as constituent elements of host-guest or metal-organic frameworks controllable by luminous stimuli. In a second example, dithienylethene-type photochromic switches have been used to trigger the emission of a porphyrin. This dyad exhibited a reversible modulation of its emission, displaying a particularly highly contrasted response. As a final example, a spiropyran derivative has been combined with anisotropic gold nanoparticles. By inducing the isomerisation of the molecular switch in the AuNR colloidal liquid dispersions, we visualised a large variation of the colloid extinction spectrum, dependent on the LSPR mode wavelength and the spectral overlap with the photoswitch
