Abstract:
A lack of sources makes it difficult to discover the personhood of premodern Japanese royal women—how they viewed themselves or wanted to be viewed by others. Hachijō-in (1137–1211), a royal heiress, strove to protect her lineage, which had begun to weaken in the political and military turmoil of the late twelfth century. Through a close analysis of her prayer of dedication (kōmon), this article explores how she reflected upon herself after undergoing a time of great difficulty as an unmarried royal daughter. In contrast to the historical overviews that typically emphasise the roles of medieval male royals and warriors, this study demonstrates that royal daughters also played significant religio-political roles. They developed a strong sense of responsibility for supporting royal authority and commemorating deceased family members. Hachijō-in’s prayer reveals her objectives, feelings and values as a woman through a deliberate construction of herself in front of the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman of Iwashimizu Shrine.

Abstract:
When bringing precious things such as royal edict (敎書), investiture book (冊), and royal seal (寶), the processional band, called gochwi (鼓吹), is set up together with the small scale royal emblem (細仗). Compared to the front gochwi (前部鼓吹) accompanied during the king or queen's travels, this band is small scale, so to distinguish it from the front gochwi, it is called sejang gochwi (細仗鼓吹) for convenience's sake. There is an opinion that the sejang gochwi with the small scale emblem only lead in front without playing. To interrogate this, this study examines various cases of gochwi used in the rites for granting an honorific title from the King Seonjo (宣祖) to King Injo (仁祖) era.…

Abstract:
Introduction. There is a growing focus on the need for an increased number of allied health professionals to reduce the pressure on acute hospitals through admission avoidance. There is little in the way of guidelines on how services should be delivered and a lack of evidence base demonstrating effectiveness. Methods. An audit has been carried out by the occupational therapy team in the Emergency Department to capture the total number of referrals to the occupational therapy service in the Emergency Department at Royal Berkshire Hospital and to capture discharge decisions made following occupational therapy input. Results. The occupational therapy team in the Emergency Department focuses particularly on admission avoidance using a home first approach to prevent patients from being admitted to acute wards. The results showed that the service was beneficial regarding both the number of referrals and the utilisation of various discharge destinations from the Emergency Department. Conclusion. The report has identified several areas for further research by the same team and implications for the wider literature base. The hope is that this report would highlight the role of occupational therapists working in the emergency department at Royal Berkshire Hospital and encourage the completion of further research in this area of practice.

In September 2017, the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators adopted a new clinical governance framework that recognised healthcare as a complex adaptive system, and embraced the need for resilient thinking and understanding the differences between work-as-imagined by managers and work-as-done at the front line of patient care. Directors of medical services may soon be implementing the framework in health services across Australia. This perspective describes a new conceptual model that underpins the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators framework, and characterises the challenges faced by all healthcare professionals when trying to achieve safe care for patients in an environment of variable complexity and unpredictability.

The Royal Library, Copenhagen has made many attempts over the years to organise the huge collection of photographs held in its Department of Maps, Prints and Photographs into a formal museum of photography. Finally in 1996 the Royal Library created such a museum, and named it ‘The National Museum of Photography’. This museum within a library will be located in the new building at the City’s harbour front called The Black Diamond. The displays will show new as well as older photography from the collection, which is important both artistically and historically. Digitisation and cataloguing of the collection are under way, and the first couple of thousand items are already available to a wider public on the Internet.

Abstract:
Almost from its inception The Royal Society has had a particular interest in the seas of the Southern Hemisphere. The Endeavour voyage of circumnavigation in southern waters by James Cook and his naturalist Joseph Banks, which was initiated by the Society, had repercussions—far beyond its original astronomical purpose—in oceanography, biology, exploration and world politics. It left a tradition, which still continues in the Society, of promoting wide-ranging expeditions such as those of the Erebus and Terror , the Challenger and, more recently, those to the Great Barrier Reef, the Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides and the island of Aldabra. The sea areas covered are those lying between the South Polar Front and, approximately, the Equator. Small islands and inshore waters are included but not land-based expeditions, such as those to Southern Chile and the Matto Grosso. The contributions of both the Society and its Fellows acting individually have been numerous and varied but here attention is restricted to three interconnected topics: physical and geological oceanography, biogeography and the genesis of coral reefs.

This is the second installment of a series of interviews, conducted by the senior author (S.D.W.) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), that feature international leaders in surgery telling of the challenges they faced during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The disease arrived in the United Kingdom with devastating effects within a few weeks of its spread to Western Europe from China. In Oxford, Professor Neil Mortensen used his position as the President-elect of the Royal College of Surgeons of England to help coordinate efforts among the 4 Royal Colleges in the United Kingdom (his own, London, Edinburgh, and Ireland) to mobilize and retrain surgeons for duty helping to support in the critical care of patients with respiratory illness from the virus. In London, Lord Ara Darzi, a colon and rectal surgeon and leading innovator in minimally invasive surgery, underwent re-education himself in respiratory care to help his medical colleagues. As a member of the House of Lords involved in matters regarding the National Health Service as former Parliamentary Undersecretary of Health, he facilitated legislative measures to increase the physician workforce necessary to meet the demand for skilled personnel. Professor Mortensen and Lord Darzi have been recognized as honorary fellows of the ACS for their contributions to surgery. “Lots of people do not think it can possibly happen to them”, Professor Mortensen said, “Our experience is that it will happen to you, and you cannot be prepared enough. Abstract The Śər’atä mängəśt is a collection of historical notes, descriptions of important ceremonies at the royal Ethiopian court, and regulations for court protocol and practices pertaining to law suits. The text exists in several different versions in a fairly large number of codices where it is often placed in front of the so-called Short Chronicle of the Ethiopian Kings. While I was working on a synoptical edition of these versions, the intertextual (and material) links to other sources of the Ethiopian historical tradition (chronicles, juridical documents, etc.) became clear, and it was possible to identify the authors, redactors, and compilers of these texts as counselors and judges at the royal court. The Śər’atä mängəśt, this professional group’s vade mecum, was written and modified as a function of changes in the political and social situation.

Dye, Peter John. "Air power's midwife : logistics support for Royal Flying Corps operations on the Western Front 1914-1918." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4845/.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of the British air weapon on the Western Front during the First World War represented a revolution in the way that national resources were employed in exploiting a technological opportunity to achieve tactical and operational advantage. Logistic competence was the precondition for air superiority and the 'modern style of warfare' — indirect, predicted artillery fire. The Royal Flying Corps' logistic staffs, led by Brigadier-General Robert Brooke-Popham, demonstrated considerable agility in meeting the demands of three-dimensional warfare. Sustaining adequate numbers of front-line aircraft required substantial numbers of skilled and semi-skilled personnel, located largely beyond the battle zone, operating at a continuously high tempo while coping with rapid technological change and high wastage. These elements formed a complex, dynamic and integrated network that was also partly self-sustaining, in the form of salvage and repair, with the ability to compensate for shortfalls in aircraft and aero-engine production as well as unpredictable demand. The logistic principles developed on the Western Front provided the foundation for Royal Air Force success in the Second World War and anticipated the management practices that underpin today's global supply chain - as well as demonstrating the enduring interdependence of logistics and air power.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of static warfare on the Western Front in late 1914, encouraged the reinvention of devices associated with siege warfare and the invention of hitherto unknown munitions. These munitions included hand and rifle grenades and trench mortars and their ammunition. At the outbreak of war, the British effectively possessed none of these devices and lacked an infrastructure by which they could be quickly designed, manufactured and supplied to the BEF. The British met this challenge with considerable success and the subsequent proliferation of trench warfare munitions had profound consequences for the evolution of British tactics on the Western Front. This thesis examines the processes by which these devices were invented, developed into manufacturable devices and supplied to the BEF. It considers their novelty in respect to similar devices from the American Civil War and the Russo-Japanese War. It looks at how their technical evolution affected tactical developments. The thesis discusses the relationship between the technical characteristics of these devices and the evolution of their tactical employment on the Western Front. It also considers how the characteristics of certain munitions, such as the Stokes mortar and the Mills grenade, directly effected tactics. It argues that the tactical employment of these munitions was dependent upon their functionality, utility and reliability. The present thesis provides a different model of trench warfare conducted by the British during the First World War and thereby demonstrates the significance of the novel munitions under discussion and the role they played in changing infantry warfare. This thesis also provides a different view of the Ministry of Munitions from that usually offered and argues that certain aspects of the Ministry’s role in providing the BEF with munitions has been overstated by virtue of its having underplayed the work of the War Office, while overlooking that conducted by the Royal Engineers in France.

Le, Grice Philip. "The role of ice nucleation active bacteria in frost damage to early sown Solanum tuberosum var. Jersey Royal." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2653.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study indicated that S. tuberosum var. Jersey Royal could supercool to temperatures as low as -6ºC during in-vitro frost tests, whereas in the field freezing occurred at immediate sub-zero temperatures (between 0 and -1ºC). The microbial flora upon the early. sown S. tuberosum var. Jersey Royal did not contain INA bacterial species active at warm sub-zero temperatures. Plants inoculated with a strain of Ps. syringae (84:27) containing type 1 active nuclei readily froze at -2 to -3ºC. Applications of leaf surface water applied to plants during in-vitro frost tests resulted in nucleation temperatures comparable to those measured in the field. Applications of leaf surface water initiated freezing in whole plants during in-vitro frost tests at temperatures warmer than those caused by Ps. syringae (84:27). Thus field frost kill and ice nucleation in the presence of leaf surface water occurred at temperatures warmer than type 1 INA bacterial nucleation temperatures. Exogenous foliar applications of ethylene glycol applied in the presence of leaf surface water led to enhanced supercooling and frost avoidance during in-vitro frost tests and during field frost events. It was concluded that modifying the formation and freezing of leaf surface water would be more likely to provide a frost control strategy applicable to the field crop than frost control through manipulation of phylloplane microorganisms.

Awarded by:University of New South Wales - Australian Defence Force Academy. School of Civil Engineering, 2001. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/38744.

Full text
Abstract:
System dynamics modelling has been used for around 40 years to address complex, systemic, dynamic problems, those often described as wicked. But, system dynamics modelling is not an exact science and arguments about the most suitable techniques to use in which circumstances, continues. The nature of these wicked problems is investigated through a series of case studies where poor situational awareness among stakeholders was identified. This was found to be an underlying cause for management failure, suggesting need for better ways of recognising and managing wicked problem situations. Human cognition is considered both as a limitation and enabler to decision-making in wicked problem environments. Naturalistic and deliberate decision-making are reviewed. The thesis identifies the need for integration of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Case study results and a review of the literature led to identification of a set of principles of method to be applied in an integrated framework, the aim being to develop an improved way of addressing wicked problems. These principles were applied to a series of cases in an action research setting. However, organisational and political barriers were encountered. This limited the exploitation and investigation of cases to varying degrees. In response to a need identified in the literature review and the case studies, a tool is designed to facilitate analysis of multi-factorial, non-linear causality. This unique tool and its use to assist in problem conceptualisation, and as an aid to testing alternate strategies, are demonstrated. Further investigation is needed in relation to the veracity of combining causal influences using this tool and system dynamics, broadly. System dynamics modelling was found to have utility needed to support analysis of wicked problems. However, failure in a particular modelling project occurred when it was found necessary to rely on human judgement in estimating values to be input into the models. This was found to be problematic and unacceptably risky for sponsors of the modelling effort. Finally, this work has also identified that further study is required into: the use of human judgement in decision-making and the validity of system dynamics models that rely on the quantification of human judgement.

Abstract:
In 1664 Molière and his troupe played in the gardens of Versailles, in front of the Sun King, La Princesse d'Elide a rewriting of the Desdén con el Desdén by Moreto. As Maria Grazia Profeti pointed out in her writings, Genette's analysis still allows, after some time from the critical works of the critic, to avoid the ever-present and threatening obstacles of moral, formal or aesthetic value judgements accompanied by the more or less declared idea of superiority or inferiority of an author or a culture and dramaturgy. Entering the Molierian laboratory, after having highlighted how much the French hypertext owes to its Spanish hypotext, the essay tries to recontextualize the pièce within the Royal Festivals of the Plaisirs de île enchantée also in the light of the reception of contemporaries: wearing virtually the spectacles of a spectator of the time, and taking into consideration the transvalorizations carried out by the French playwright, he also tries to grasp the meaning that the Molierian play may have assumed for the Sovereign and the public in the context of the political and sentimental biography of the King of France at that chronological height.

Abstract:
Marine Propulsion Systems Integrated Project Team (MPSIPT), part of the UK’s Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), has traditionally provided gas turbine life cycle management to a collaboration of four European navies operating the Rolls Royce Olympus, Tyne and Spey marine gas turbines. With the drive towards the need to deliver greater efficiencies, a shrinking supplier base and in keeping with DLO’s Strategic Plan to transform in-service support arrangements, MPSIPT explored ways by which they could move from a provider to intelligent decider role. This transformation was realised in the form of a Total Care Package (TCP), introduced in April 2005, whereby Rolls Royce has taken responsibility for the support of Olympus and Tyne marine gas turbines. The issues raised should be of interest to Navies and other organisations facing similar challenges in gas turbine support. This paper gives a brief history behind how gas turbine life cycle management has been provided to the Royal Navy in the past, before concentrating on the reasons behind and the practical issues raised by our move to the TCP arrangement. The paper sets out the philosophy behind the DLO’s Strategic Plan, what that means in practical terms, how it has been applied for gas turbine support and the implications for the future. It explains how TCP has been approached in partnership with Rolls Royce, describes the issues that were faced, what the benefits are, what it means for the front line and our partners and how the contract is being managed. It concludes by identifying the lessons from the first year of operation of the TCP contract.

Abstract:
The MT30 is the latest and most powerful gas turbine to enter the marine market. Recently entering US Navy service in USS Freedom, the first-of-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), MT30 has now been selected to be the prime power plant for two further classes of front-line warships; The Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers for the Royal Navy, and the US Navy DDG-1000 Destroyers. This paper tracks the development of the MT30 from its well-established Rolls-Royce Aero Trent parent, discussing the changes necessary to adapt and harden the gas turbine for the marine application. The MT30 development program is described, including the rigorous testing undertaken to qualify the engine to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules. Existing and future applications for the MT30 are described. Systems for achieving efficient hybrid propulsion utilising electric motors for cruise and the MT30 for boost are presented. The latest all-electric marine propulsion architectures as used on DDG-1000 and the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers is discussed -in particular, the issue of maintaining the quality of power supply through transient load demands. The paper concludes with an insight into the latest MT30 package, which sees the system reaching class-beating power densities whilst ensuring maintainability through innovative design features.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Existing digital technology is transforming adjacent industries and will transform the Maritime sector. Increased data integration, exploitation via applications and use of mobile technology will enable the realisation of benefits, particularly in the management of material state and design change. Improvements to the way we store, share, manage and act upon information will ensure decisions are based upon the best, most accurate and timely information available shared across the Support Enterprise. It will also reduce time taken for maintenance by better understanding the maintenance requirement and avoid unnecessary cost by reducing the need for 2nd, 3rd and 4th line support. All of this should lead to a greatly reduced safety risk and increased platform availability. Furthermore, these improvements will enable the Royal Navy (RN) to further empower its maintainers, improving efficiency, productivity and job satisfaction. These personnel are at the heart of the Support solution and are of vital importance not least because platforms are complex but also because conduct of operational engineering, by RN personnel at reach, in adversity, ensures the Service is always ready to fight and win. The RN is embracing Digital Transformation (DX) as the means to deliver maritime support improvement and specifically safety, availability and productivity benefits. Navy Command has developed the Maritime Support Information Exploitation (MarSIX) strategy and model to drive the development of a single configured, assured, inter-related data set that can effectively exploit information across the enterprise and ensure the RN maintainer is firmly positioned at the heart of Support. Vital to the safety argument and meeting availability requirements, the approach is part of a journey towards a future Support Network that recognises the unique maritime operating environment and the close relationship between front line engineering and the enterprise that supports it.
