Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Successful export of South African fresh fruit requires fruit of a high quality. Variable fruit quality within a consignment is detrimental to effective marketing of the product. The light microclimate under which the fruit develops is one of the factors that affect within-tree and between-tree variation in quality, maturity and yield. Light exposure effects on fruit quality at harvest and after commercial storage and ripening periods, as well as the physiological mechanisms of these responses to light exposure were studied

Our postulate was that consumer preference would be higher for the taste, but not necessarily for the appearance of outer canopy fruit. Outer canopy fruit, exposed to higher irradiance and temperatures, accumulated more phenolics and ascorbic acid, and had higher antioxidant capacities in their peel compared to inner canopy fruit. Phenolic levels and antioxidant capacity were also higher in the flesh of outer cano

Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The effects of regulated deficit irrigation on the production and fruit quality of peaches were investigated. A field trial was carried out in a twelve-year-old Neethling peach orchard at Robertson Experiment Farm. Treatments consisted of five different soil water depletion levels applied during five different growth stages. Irrigation was applied at the five soil water depletion levels of which T1 was regarded as relatively wet (irrigation was applied when the average soil matric potential reached ca. -50 kPa). T2 was

South African ‘Forelle’ pears are harvested at an optimum firmness of 6.4 kg and have mandatory cold storage duration of 12 weeks at -0.5°C to ensure even ripening. The firmness variable alone, however, is not a good indicator of ripening potential. Hence, various maturity variables (ethylene production, ground colour, firm

In this thesis, I explore four different ways in which relatedness affects sexual interactions in the red junglefowl Gallus gallus ssp., and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. First, I show that in both species, inbreeding depression is sex-specific and modulated by parental age and gametic age. However, the sex that suffers higher inbreeding depression was trait- and species-dependent. Second, I examined patterns of inbreeding avoidance. I found no evidence of inbreeding avoidance in the fruit fly, but in the red junglefowl both males and females avoided mating with relatives, independent

The focus is on the color cast of the illuminated objects affected by different light sources. In this study, LED light source color temperature (°K), color rendering (CRI), illumination (Lux) and other parameters were used to design the light source. Then we use questionnaires and cluster analysis to get six fruit image vocabulary. The expe
