Abstract:

Abstract:
This study investigated the quality and safety of solar dried fruits and vegetables produced by households in three locations in the Butha-Buthe district of Lesotho from November 2002 to March 2003. The aim of the study was to enhance year round availability of fruits and vegetables and reduce post-harvest losses, contributing to increased food availability and accessibility in the district. The study analysed the quality and safety of dried fruits and vegetables by assessing the processing techniques applied by the respondents during the production of dried fruits and vegetables, analysing th

Biobased food packaging materials have been defined as materials derived from renewable resources; the class of biopolymers encompasses all the polymeric compounds produced by living organisms and are mainly represented by polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. Biopolymers are largely used to produce biodegradable and edible films and coating that can reduce the problem of waste disposal due to the synthetic packaging. Moreover the concept of using edible film and coating to extend the shelf-life of food has been increased. This success in extending the shelf life and enhancing the quality of f

Equipment and procedures for the rapid measurement of the water vapor permeability of polymer films and food coatings has been evaluated. The method uses an electronic sensor to measure the concentration increase in water vapor diffusing through a film into a chamber of known volume. Air of known humidity is passed over each side of the film to establish a desired equilibrium relative humidity differential prior to each test. Experimental results showed that moisture vapor transmission rates of polymer packaging films and edible coatings could be determined in a range from 0.25 to 12 hours ins

The aim of this dissertation is to assess the degree of market integration in some F&V sectors through econometric techniques. In particular we estimated the speed of price transmission among closely located markets as well as the price transmission across different Regions. We consider products that differ for storability, incidence of transportation costs and production technologies so we are able to generalize our findings to the whole EU F&V sector. We employed Granger-Causality tests and estimated Ravallion-type regressions to identify the markets that mainly influence the prices of other
