The bagging of fruits provides efficient protection from high-intensity sunlight and improves fruit color and quality. However, bagged fruit suddenly exposed to bright light can cause sunburn and destroys the peel cell structure. In this study, fruits from ten-year-old apple trees of ‘Gala’ variety were debagged, and the effect of sunburn on fruits was divided into: (1) normal peels (BFN), (2) peels with albefaction (BFA), and (3) browning (BFB). The non-bagging fruits (NBF) were set as a control to study the physiological characteristics of apple fruits with different levels of sunburn. Our r

In this study, the dropping time of apricot fruits was followed experimentally using a water column. Some effective characteristics of apricots related to the dropping time were determined using standard methods. The best models for the dropping time of Nasiry, Rajabali, and Ghavami apricot varieties as a function of water and fruit densities, shape factor, and fruit volumes were executed with the determination coefficients of 0.95, 0.92, and 0.85, respectively. It was found that the differences between the fruits density minus the density of water had a major effect on their dropping time.

This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical, phytochemical, and sensory characteristics of wild blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) harvested from two locations at different altitudes (Glibovac – 1,200 m and Crepuljnik – 1,400 m) on Mt. Golija in southwestern Serbia. The physical parameters measured included fruit weight, height, and width. Chemical analyses encompassed soluble solids content, pH, titratable acidity, and sugar composition. Phytochemical properties, such as total phenolic content, total anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity (ABTS assay), were assessed. In addition, senso

Especially exotic fruits provide many challenges due to long transport routes and the logistics of ripening processes. Optical characterisation of the fruits could help ensure the required quality. A combination of visual and infrared light evaluation techniques allows the measurement of quality parameters that support the control system of the reseller’s store and the delivery logistics to the super market. Abstract:
The fruit of pepper (Capsicum annuum) commonly wilts (or shrivels) during postharvest storage due to rapid water loss, a condition that greatly reduces its shelf life and market value. The fact that pepper fruit are hollow, and thus have limited water content, only exacerbates this problem in pepper. The collaborators on this project completed research whose findings provided new insight into the genetic, physiological, and biochemical basis for water loss from the fruits of pepper (Capsicum annuum and related Capsicum species). Well-defined genetic populations of pepper were used in this stud

Rapid digitalization has become an integral feature of the global economy in recent years, as markets became more connected and new modes of production and trade emerged. Having a relatively open digital environment, the Philippines is poised for digital trade integration with its Asia-Pacific neighbors. However, various measures must be taken for the country to be fully prepared for regional integration. Some of these are considered low-hanging fruits and can be quickly adopted by the government. Abstract:
Ethylene is a plant hormone that controls many plant responses, such as growth, senescence, ripening, abscission and seed germination. Recently, 1-methy- cyclopropene (1-MCP), was shown to bind to ethylene receptor for a certain period of time and prevent ethylene action. The objectives of this research were to synthesize analogues of 1-MCP and test their potency to block the ethylene receptor and inhibit ethylene action. During the course of this project, procedures for synthesis and shipment of the cyclopropene compounds were developed as well assay procedures for each compound were worked o

We expanded the range of products to include poultry and the range of techniques to use real experiments as well as more traditional surveys. Abstract:
Background to the topic: Early tomato fruit development is executed via extensive cell divisions followed by cell expansion concomitantly with endoreduplication. The signals involved in activating the different modes of growth during fruit development are still inadequately understood. Addressing this developmental process, we identified SlFSM1 as a gene expressed specifically during the cell-division dependent stages of fruit development. SlFSM1 is the founder of a class of small plant specific proteins containing a divergent SANT/MYB domain (Barg et al 2005). Before initiating this project,

The overall goal of the research was to understand the processes involved in the development of woolliness in peaches and nectarines. Four specific hypotheses were proposed and in the course of the research evidence was gathered t support two of them and to not support two others. The hypotheses and a summary of the evidence are outlined below. 1. That woolliness arises from an imbalance between the activities of the cell wall pectin degrading enzymes. Using 'Flavortop' nectarines and 'Hermoza' peaches as model systems, storage regimes were manipulated to induce or prevent woolliness. The expr
