Abstract:
Abstract Prescribed burning treatments were applied over a 20 yr period in a completely randomized field study to determine the effects of various fire regimes on vegetation in a direct seeded stand of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). Seeding was done in November 1968. The study area was broadcast-burned about 16 months after seeding. The initial research treatments were applied in 1973, and as many as 12 research burns were applied through 1993. Pines were measured in March 1995. Prescribed burning resulted in a greater stocking of longleaf pine (an average of 598 trees/ac) on treated plots than on unburned plots (30 trees/ac). However, on the burned treatments, longleaf pines were significantly smaller (2.5 ft3/tree of stemwood) than were the unburned trees (3.7ft3/tree of stemwood). Half of the treated plots were burned in early March, and the other half were burned in early May. Seasons of burning did not significantly influence longleaf pine stocking. However, use of fire in May resulted in significantly greater basal area (100 ft2/ac) and stemwood production (1,921 ft3/ac) than burning in March (59 ft2/ac and 909 ft3/ac). Fire effectively kept natural loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) seedlings from reaching sapling size, but loblolly saplings and poles dominated the unburned plots (710 trees/ac). When all pines were considered on all treatments, stocking ranged from 467 to 740 trees/ac, but stocking was not significantly different among treatments. The unburned plots had significantly greater total basal area (149 ft2/ac) and stemwood productivity (2,918 ft3/ac) than the burned treatments (82 ft2/ac and 1,459 ft3 /ac). Likewise, hardwoods that were at least 1 in. dbh were more common on unburned p lots (327 stems/ac) than on burned treatments (58 stems/ac). South. J. Appl. For. 24(2):86-92.

Abstract:
Abstract From 1962 through 1998, 20 prescribed burns were applied in a natural stand of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) to determine the effects of various fire regimes on the forest plant community. The original longleaf seedlings regenerated from the 1955 seed crop and were growing in a grass-dominated cover when the study began. By 1999, prescribed burning in March and May resulted in a significantly greater stocking of longleaf pine (203 trees/ac) than on the unburned and July burned treatments (72 trees/ac) (α = 0.05). Fire arrested the growth of natural loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) and hardwoods, but loblolly pines and hardwoods of at least 4 in. dbh added 70 ft2/ac of basal area on the unburned plots. Thus, total woody basal area was significantly greater on the unburned (117 ft2/ac) and May burned (132 ft2/ac) treatments than on the July burned treatment (66 ft2/ac); basal area was intermediate on the March burned treatment (97 ft2/ac). Pine volume was 4,315, 2,870, 2,652, and 1,970 ft3 inside-bark/ac on the May burned, March burned, unburned, and July burned treatments, respectively, but these differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.06). There was only 11 lb/ac of herbaceous plants on the unburned plots. Herbaceous plants averaged 993 lb/ac on the three burned treatments, with pinehill bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium var. divergens [Hack] Gould) being the most common herbaceous plant. We believe the chief influence of burning in this natural longleaf pine forest was not on pine yield but how fires influenced overall stand structure and species composition. South. J. Appl. AbstractThe medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS) spectroscopy was used to obtain the data on the structure and stoichiometry of interfaces in LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures. The coverage of the LAO/STO heterostructure with a LAO film increased by a factor of almost two as the lanthanum aluminate layer thickness increased from 1 to 6 unit cells. It is shown that the formation of the heterostructure is accompanied by the interchange with Sr ions of the substrate and La ions of the firm. The influence of the oxygen pressure on the formation of the heterostructure has been studied. The conditions required to form nanodimentional interlayer of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas with high mobility of electrons in the interface region are analyzed.

Abstract:
Abstract The international export and investment activities of firms have been widely studied by scholars. In particular, prior studies have focused on two main hypotheses about firms engaged in international activities such as exporting and investing abroad; namely, self-selection of more productive firms into international activities and learning-by-doing international activities. This paper is the first study that explores these hypotheses in regard to firms’ use of free trade agreements (FTAs). We first estimate the propensity score for firms’ use of FTA schemes, and find that larger firms are more likely to participate. Then, by conducting matching analysis using the propensity scores, we find that, at least in the short run, the use of FTAs does not change bilateral exports, bilateral imports and employment but does raise the share of local inputs.

Abstract:
As Pakistan enters the CPEC era, there is a sense of optimism as well as concern in the country, given the uncertain economic impact of this major collaboration between China and Pakistan. Using firm-level and trade data, we empirically test the impact of the 2006 free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries on the productivity, size and value added of potentially affected Pakistani firms. These results have important policy implications for CPEC initiatives. We start with a difference-in-difference analysis, comparing trends in those sectors in Pakistan made more vulnerable by tariff reductions on Chinese goods relative to sectors for which the tariff did not change significantly. Next, we examine those sectors in Pakistan that were given greater access to Chinese markets through reductions in the Chinese tariff on Pakistani goods relative to sectors for which market access remained roughly the same. In the sectors made more vulnerable by reductions in Pakistani tariffs on Chinese goods, imports to Pakistan have risen, while productivity, value added and value added per worker have fallen relative to other sectors since the FTA. In the sectors for which Pakistan gained access to Chinese markets, exports and employment have risen, but productivity and value added have fallen relative to other sectors since the FTA.

Abstract:
The preservation of mould-ripened salami was investigated during 48 days at 19-20 °C under different packaging conditions: (i) high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or under vacuum, (ii) biaxially oriented polypropylene film, (iii) microperforated polyethylene film and (iv) unpackaged. Sensory, texture profile, physicochemical and microbiological analyses were performed. Fungal quantification revealed two data groups. In group 1 (consisting of salami in microperforated polyethylene film, biaxially oriented polypropylene film and unpackaged) the conidium viability was relatively constant. In group 2 (salami preserved in high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or under vacuum) the conidium viability decreased due to the absence of oxygen and the high carbon dioxide volume fraction. SEM micrographs showed micromorphological changes in fungal structure; microperforated polyethylene film, biaxially oriented polypropylene film and unpackaged conditions preserved the conidial morphology, while high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or vacuum conditions collapsed the hyphae and most of the conidia. Salami packed in microperforated polyethylene film and biaxially oriented polypropylene film showed the most acceptable organoleptic characteristics and lower hardness and chewiness values after packaging.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Electrochemical and non-enzymatic fructose detection has evoked keen interest in the scientific literature. Several authors have reported on different methods of electrode preparation for fructose sensors. However, little systematic study has been conducted to design a cheap, efficient method of depositing metal oxides to detect fructose. To address the challenge, a Co3O4 thin film was fabricated using a simple solution step deposition on Fluorine doped Tin oxide (FTO) glass electrode. In this study, a report on the selective oxidation of fructose on Co3O4 thin film electrode surface is presented. Electrode characterization was done using X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Fluorescence Microscopy (AFM), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). All cyclic voltammetry (CVs) and chronoamperometry tests were carried out by the use of an AUTOLAB POTENTIOSTAT 302 N, controlled by Nova 2.0 software instrumentation using a customized 50 cm3 electrochemical cell. The cell consisted of a graphite rod as the counter electrode (CE), 3 M Ag/AgCl reference electrode (RE) and the fabricated Co3O4/FTO as the working electrode (WE). All experiments were carried out at 25±2 ⁰C. From the results, the constructed sensor exhibited two distinctive linear ranges in the ranges of 0.021 – 1.74 mM and from 1.74 - ~15 mM, covering a wide linear range of up to ~15 mM at an applied potential of +0.6V vs. Ag/AgCl in 0.1M NaOH solution. The sensor demonstrated a high, reproducible and repeatable sensitivity of 495 (lower concentration range) & 53 (higher concentration range) μA cm-2 mM-1 for a low R.S.D of 5 %. The Co3O4 thin film produced a low detection limit of ~1.7 μM for a signal to noise ratio of 3 (S/N = 3); a fast response time of 6s and long term stability. The repeatability and stability of the electrode resulted from the chemical stability of Co3O4 thin film. The study showed that the sensor was highly selective towards fructose compared to the presence of other key interferences i.e. AA, AC, and UA. Because of such a favourable electrocatalysis of the Co3O4 sensor towards fructose, the ease of the electrode fabrication and reproducibility makes it a future candidate for commercial applications in the food and beverages sector.

Abstract:
Construction is one of the oldest of industries in the world, with the first establishedconstruction company being established around 230 BC. One of the biggest industries inEurope, at an estimated €900 billion a year, it also accounts for 40% of total energy consumption and 40% of total waste generation in the EU1 . Although the majority ofthese are from the use phase of the built environment, there is a lack of a comprehensiveenvironmental risk management system for the construction phase. This study proposesan environmental risk management framework based on the Beer-Ziolkowski model of risk management for both site specific and non-site specific construction operations witha stakeholder centric approach. It proposes stakeholder involvement to identify the risksaided with trend analysis of strategic regulatory implications from the concernedauthority - Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and thecurrent orgnisational practice of objective environmental risk identification from ISO14001 guidance. Scope of site specific and non-site specific risks are narrowed down tosite operational setup and construction materials respectively, consistent with theorganisations view of the most important risks from those two classes of risks. Riskassessment is suggested through Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) method for site specific risksand European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) for non-sitespecific risks. Total Cost Accounting (TCA) of project alternative evaluation isrecommended with a view to internalise the external costs. A two tiered integration ofrisk information in the buisess process is suggested – categorised risk reduction processat the level of projects and general good practice aided with risk information at the policylevel. Being a framework for management of environmental risk as opposed to a methodfor a specific environmental risk, the principles and suggestions are broadly scoped withcase studies for identification and analysis of risks.Through the practice of prudent engagement of stakeholders and scientific risk assessments, this framework would help the organisation enable safer operational practices in the context of environmental effects. In foresight this in turn will have rendered the host firm more competent in terms of making sustainable business decisions.

Abstract:
For the past ten years, the use of high tensile steel and the productivity requirements have les respectively to an increase in pressure and speeds in the drawing process of steelcord. The control of both lubrication and wear of the wire/die contact is a key point for the process optimisation. This study deals with built-up of the interfacial lubricating film in this high pressure contact lubricated with an emulsion. The rheological behaviour and the wetting properties of the lubricant in the inlet zone of the wire/die contact are important parameters. The inlet zone, where the lubrication regime is elastohydrodynamic, governs the formation of the lubricating film and the lubricant supply of the contact. The knowledge of the lubricant behaviour in this inlet zone is crucial to understand the lubrication in the drawing process of steelcord. This has been experimentally investigated with an EHL tribometer and chemical analyses of the lubricant film. It has been shown that a change in the physical structure of the lubricant due to ageing is a necessary condition to build-up a lubricant film. A model based on the analysis of the starvation process has been developed to evaluate the rheaological properties of the lubricant film formed on the contacting bodies. The adherence and slippage at the wall of the lubricating film is explained by electrical interactions between the metallic surfaces and lubricant particles. Both formation and breakage of the lubricating film are connected with the industrial process. The wear of the drawing die is studied in details with an instrumented drawing machine especially developed for this purpose. This study demonstrates that the interactions between the transfert layers observed on the surface of the drawing dies and the lubrication process. In the first step of the process, the lubrication regime appears to be essentially plastohydrodynamic. As the running conditions become more and more severe in the last steps of the process, a boundary regime is reached. Finally, hypothesis based on the different observations pointed out in this study are proposed to explain the wear mechanisms

Abstract:
The research project presented in this dissertation is about text and memory. The title of the work is "Text and memory between Semiotics and Cognitive Science: an experimental setting about remembering a movie". The object of the research is the relationship between texts or "textuality" - using a more general semiotic term - and memory. The goal is to analyze the link between those semiotic artifacts that a culture defines as autonomous meaningful objects - namely texts - and the cognitive performance of memory that allows to remember them. An active dialogue between Semiotics and Cognitive Science is the theoretical paradigm in which this research is set, the major intend is to establish a productive alignment between the "theory of text" developed in Semiotics and the "theory of memory" outlined in Cognitive Science. In particular the research is an attempt to study how human subjects remember and/or misremember a film, as a specific case study; in semiotics, films are “cinematographic texts”. The research is based on the production of a corpus of data gained through the qualitative method of interviewing. After an initial screening of a fulllength feature film each participant of the experiment has been interviewed twice, according to a pre-established set of questions. The first interview immediately after the screening: the subsequent, follow-up interview three months from screening. The purpose of this design is to elicit two types of recall from the participants. In order to conduce a comparative inquiry, three films have been used in the experimental setting. Each film has been watched by thirteen subjects, that have been interviewed twice. The corpus of data is then made by seventy-eight interviews. The present dissertation displays the results of the investigation of these interviews. It is divided into six main parts. Chapter one presents a theoretical framework about the two main issues: memory and text. The issue of the memory is introduced through many recherches drown up in the field of Cognitive Science and Neuroscience. It is developed, at the same time, a possible relationship with a semiotic approach. The theoretical debate about textuality, characterizing the field of Semiotics, is examined in the same chapter. Chapter two deals with methodology, showing the process of definition of the whole method used for production of the corpus of data. The interview is explored in detail: how it is born, what are the expected results, what are the main underlying hypothesis. In Chapter three the investigation of the answers given by the spectators starts. It is examined the phenomenon of the outstanding details of the process of remembering, trying to define them in a semiotic way. Moreover there is an investigation of the most remembered scenes in the movie. Chapter four considers how the spectators deal with the whole narrative. At the same time it is examined what they think about the global meaning of the film. Chapter five is about affects. It tries to define the role of emotions in the process of comprehension and remembering. Chapter six presents a study of how the spectators account for a single scene of the movie. The complete work offers a broad perspective about the semiotic issue of textuality, using both a semiotic competence and a cognitive one. At the same time it presents a new outlook on the issue of memory, opening several direction of research.

The growing interest in the use of new materials and their applications for photovoltaic systems has been a constant concern of the scientific community in recent years. This work is primarily engaged in the collection, characterization and photoactivity testing photovoltaic solar cells made of thin SnO2 doped fluoride films, the films were deposited by the technique of "spray-pyrolysis" and the Sol-Gel method in substrate glass. In glasses microscopy work with dimensions of 2.5 x 7.5 x 1 mm are used as matrices for the conductive substrates or transparent conductive oxides (TCO). These glasses have electrical resistance and transmittance adequate for the manufacture of photoelectrochemical solar cells activated by dyes. Besides making the glasses must be made conductive depositing a layer of titanium oxide, preparation of electrolyte, dye, assembly and characterization of the cells. The conductive substrate has a film of tin dioxide doped with fluorine (SnO2: F), the deposition is made with the aid of a compressor and a spray gun on the glass at a temperature of 600Â C from a solution made by the method Sol- gel (MSG). As characterization techniques were used: x-ray diffraction (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV-Vis and Van der Pauw method. The conductive glass has transmittance of 80% (400 nm - 800 nm). The cell with mesoporphyrin dye has Vac = 0.34V and Icc ~ 150μA. The experimental results obtained from these cells may contribute to the development of prototypes that can be used commercially in the capture of solar energy and its consequent transformation into electricity.

Abstract:
Through an exhaustive analysis, this dissertation aims to offer a reading of the film Nostalghia, to elucidate its structure, its writing and its cinematographic means, through their potentialities to awaken our sensitivity. Indeed, the structure of the film, on all levels, is a succession of discontinuities whose reception is a continuous interweaving of consciousness and unconsciousness. In that sense, the film is an edifice of images, of sounds and of signs, a "fixed reality" that is not generating just a single reception, but a multiplicity of receptions, without ever invalidating the project of the author. Andreï Tarkovski’s language is one of truth; it offers us primarily an extraordinarily powerful sensorial dimension that is capable of arousing transcendence. None of the resources used in this work is anodyne. Nostalghia is an organic reality, a layout of images and sounds, operating as fragments of time and memory woven together. Their plasticity is what strikes us first, before proposing a signification: it is about the sensation beyond the message; it is about experiencing before proving

Abstract:
There are a lot of systems to create cinema, to generate and reproduce images perceived in motion from the human eye, but there is one that more than every other offer something new to the experimental vanguards, to the technological and aesthetic research: the animation, the cinema that creates its movement ex nihilo. A digital language of extreme technological refinement, able to tell stories of great emotional impact, is borne from the use of computer animation with its multiple applications. In this situation, the Pixar Animation Studios is placed like a house of cinematographic production, that, in few years, has given a considerable pushed to 3D animation, using the new technologies, always considered story driven and attracting the attention of a world-wide colossus like the Disney. Behind the Disney tradition, the creators of Pixar are alert to put the technology in history service. The history results amusing and able to entertain adults and children with elementary comic mechanisms and with refined cinematographic citations. The Pixar histories are able to confirm in a simple and deep way the truth that is in agreement with the authentic values of the human being.

Zhang, Xueying.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to the research of the static and dynamic properties of magnetic Domain Walls (DWs) in CoFeB nanowires. A measurement system based on a high-resolution Kerr microscope was implemented and used for these research.First, phenomena related to the DW surface tension was studied. A spontaneous collapse of domain bubbles was directly observed using the Kerr microscope. This phenomenon was explained using the concept of the Laplace pressure due to the DW surface energy. The surface energy of DW was quantified by measuring the external field required to stabilize these bubbles. The DW pinning and depinning mechanism in some artificial geometries, such as the Hall cross or the entrance connecting a nucleation pad and a wire, was explained using the concept of DW surface tension and was used to extract the DW surface energy. Benefited from these studies, a method to directly quantify the coefficient of Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya Interactions (DMI) using Kerr microscope has been proposed. In addition, a new type of magnetic sensor based on the revisable expansion of DW due to DW surface tension was proposed and verified using micromagnetic simulations.Second, the dynamic properties of DWs in Ta/CoFeB/MgO film and wires were studied. The velocity of DW motion induced by magnetic fields or by the combined effect of synchronized magnetic field pulses and electrical current pulses was measured. In steady flow regime, the velocity of DW motion induced by the combined effect of the field and the current equals to the superposition of the velocities driven by field or current independently. This result allowed us to extract the spin-polarization of CoFeB in this structure. Pinning effects of DW motion in narrow wires was studied. Depinning fields of hard pinning sites for the field-driven DW motion in nanowires was measured. It was found that the pinning effects become severer as the width w of the wires scaled down. A linear relationship between the depinning field and w was found. The origin of these hard pinning sites, as well as their influences on the DW motion velocity, was discussed. Furthermore, it was found that the pinning effect was enhanced when a current was applied, no matter the relative direction between the DW motion and the current. We propose a possible explanation, which would be an effect of the spin Hall current from the sublayer (Ta). Although there was no DMI or in-plane field, the spin Hall current, which was polarized in the transverse direction, can still exert a torque on the Bloch DW, once the DW tilts away from the transverse direction. At last, a ring-shaped racetrack memory based on the combined work of STT and has been proposed. Compared with the traditional line-shaped racetrack memory, this ring-shaped memory allows the DW moving in a ring-shaped nanowire and the data dropout problem can be avoided. The design and optimization work was performed with micromagnetic simulations

Abstract:
Pratt & Whitney has developed a novel water-injected Industrial Gas Turbine (IGT) combustor liner design that has demonstrated significant reduction in CO emissions when compared to typical film cooled combustor designs. The CO reduction demonstrated in a prototype test shows that the CO quenching due to cooler film temperatures near the liner wall is a significant source of CO emissions in a conventional water-injected combustor operating on natural gas fuel. This finding paved the way for a combustor design that reduces CO emissions while still maintaining low levels of NOx emissions. This design also has potential for lower NOx since the low CO emissions characteristic enables increased water-injection. This paper presents the emissions characteristics measured on prototype hardware and the design of the engine hardware for future validation. Significant reduction in gaseous emissions was demonstrated with the testing of a prototype at the United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, CT. This reduction in emissions compared to the baseline film-cooled design for a given operating condition has many benefits to the customer, including reduced need for exhaust catalyst cleanup and extended operating times while still meeting site permits specified in CO tons per year. Other benefits may include the ability to guarantee lower NOx emissions through increased water injection for the current CO emissions output.
