Abstract:
Abstract Prescribed burning treatments were applied over a 20 yr period in a completely randomized field study to determine the effects of various fire regimes on vegetation in a direct seeded stand of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). Seeding was done in November 1968. The study area was broadcast-burned about 16 months after seeding. The initial research treatments were applied in 1973, and as many as 12 research burns were applied through 1993. Pines were measured in March 1995. Prescribed burning resulted in a greater stocking of longleaf pine (an average of 598 trees/ac) on treated plots than on unburned plots (30 trees/ac). However, on the burned treatments, longleaf pines were significantly smaller (2.5 ft3/tree of stemwood) than were the unburned trees (3.7ft3/tree of stemwood). Half of the treated plots were burned in early March, and the other half were burned in early May. Seasons of burning did not significantly influence longleaf pine stocking. However, use of fire in May resulted in significantly greater basal area (100 ft2/ac) and stemwood production (1,921 ft3/ac) than burning in March (59 ft2/ac and 909 ft3/ac). Fire effectively kept natural loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) seedlings from reaching sapling size, but loblolly saplings and poles dominated the unburned plots (710 trees/ac). When all pines were considered on all treatments, stocking ranged from 467 to 740 trees/ac, but stocking was not significantly different among treatments. The unburned plots had significantly greater total basal area (149 ft2/ac) and stemwood productivity (2,918 ft3/ac) than the burned treatments (82 ft2/ac and 1,459 ft3 /ac). Likewise, hardwoods that were at least 1 in. dbh were more common on unburned p lots (327 stems/ac) than on burned treatments (58 stems/ac). South. J. Appl. For. 24(2):86-92.

Abstract:
Abstract From 1962 through 1998, 20 prescribed burns were applied in a natural stand of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) to determine the effects of various fire regimes on the forest plant community. The original longleaf seedlings regenerated from the 1955 seed crop and were growing in a grass-dominated cover when the study began. By 1999, prescribed burning in March and May resulted in a significantly greater stocking of longleaf pine (203 trees/ac) than on the unburned and July burned treatments (72 trees/ac) (α = 0.05). Fire arrested the growth of natural loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) and hardwoods, but loblolly pines and hardwoods of at least 4 in. dbh added 70 ft2/ac of basal area on the unburned plots. Thus, total woody basal area was significantly greater on the unburned (117 ft2/ac) and May burned (132 ft2/ac) treatments than on the July burned treatment (66 ft2/ac); basal area was intermediate on the March burned treatment (97 ft2/ac). Pine volume was 4,315, 2,870, 2,652, and 1,970 ft3 inside-bark/ac on the May burned, March burned, unburned, and July burned treatments, respectively, but these differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.06). There was only 11 lb/ac of herbaceous plants on the unburned plots. Herbaceous plants averaged 993 lb/ac on the three burned treatments, with pinehill bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium var. divergens [Hack] Gould) being the most common herbaceous plant. We believe the chief influence of burning in this natural longleaf pine forest was not on pine yield but how fires influenced overall stand structure and species composition. South. J. Appl. AbstractThe medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS) spectroscopy was used to obtain the data on the structure and stoichiometry of interfaces in LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures. The coverage of the LAO/STO heterostructure with a LAO film increased by a factor of almost two as the lanthanum aluminate layer thickness increased from 1 to 6 unit cells. It is shown that the formation of the heterostructure is accompanied by the interchange with Sr ions of the substrate and La ions of the firm. The influence of the oxygen pressure on the formation of the heterostructure has been studied. The conditions required to form nanodimentional interlayer of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas with high mobility of electrons in the interface region are analyzed.

Abstract:
Abstract The international export and investment activities of firms have been widely studied by scholars. In particular, prior studies have focused on two main hypotheses about firms engaged in international activities such as exporting and investing abroad; namely, self-selection of more productive firms into international activities and learning-by-doing international activities. This paper is the first study that explores these hypotheses in regard to firms’ use of free trade agreements (FTAs). We first estimate the propensity score for firms’ use of FTA schemes, and find that larger firms are more likely to participate. Then, by conducting matching analysis using the propensity scores, we find that, at least in the short run, the use of FTAs does not change bilateral exports, bilateral imports and employment but does raise the share of local inputs.

Abstract:
As Pakistan enters the CPEC era, there is a sense of optimism as well as concern in the country, given the uncertain economic impact of this major collaboration between China and Pakistan. Using firm-level and trade data, we empirically test the impact of the 2006 free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries on the productivity, size and value added of potentially affected Pakistani firms. These results have important policy implications for CPEC initiatives. We start with a difference-in-difference analysis, comparing trends in those sectors in Pakistan made more vulnerable by tariff reductions on Chinese goods relative to sectors for which the tariff did not change significantly. Next, we examine those sectors in Pakistan that were given greater access to Chinese markets through reductions in the Chinese tariff on Pakistani goods relative to sectors for which market access remained roughly the same. In the sectors made more vulnerable by reductions in Pakistani tariffs on Chinese goods, imports to Pakistan have risen, while productivity, value added and value added per worker have fallen relative to other sectors since the FTA. In the sectors for which Pakistan gained access to Chinese markets, exports and employment have risen, but productivity and value added have fallen relative to other sectors since the FTA.

Abstract:
The preservation of mould-ripened salami was investigated during 48 days at 19-20 °C under different packaging conditions: (i) high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or under vacuum, (ii) biaxially oriented polypropylene film, (iii) microperforated polyethylene film and (iv) unpackaged. Sensory, texture profile, physicochemical and microbiological analyses were performed. Fungal quantification revealed two data groups. In group 1 (consisting of salami in microperforated polyethylene film, biaxially oriented polypropylene film and unpackaged) the conidium viability was relatively constant. In group 2 (salami preserved in high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or under vacuum) the conidium viability decreased due to the absence of oxygen and the high carbon dioxide volume fraction. SEM micrographs showed micromorphological changes in fungal structure; microperforated polyethylene film, biaxially oriented polypropylene film and unpackaged conditions preserved the conidial morphology, while high barrier film filled with air, 100 % N2 or vacuum conditions collapsed the hyphae and most of the conidia. Salami packed in microperforated polyethylene film and biaxially oriented polypropylene film showed the most acceptable organoleptic characteristics and lower hardness and chewiness values after packaging.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to improve the performances of Fil-s (film-small), a recycled material obtained from plastic flexible film waste that is made of polyethylene and a minor amount of polypropylene, with traces of polar contaminants (polyamides, maleic anhydride, etc.). The idea was to upgrade the material’s mechanical properties by applying a nanotechnology-based strategy that takes advantage of the composition of Fil-s. In particular, different amounts of copolyamide (CoPA) and its masterbatch with an organic-modified nanosilicate were melt compounded with Fil-s in a twin-screw extruder. The good affinity between Fil-s and CoPA, proved by means of spectroscopic and rheological analysis, allowed for the obtaining of a well-refined morphology for the neat and hybrid blends. This resulted in very interesting increments of the strain at break, which was particularly impressive (10 times higher) in the case of the blend with the lower amount of copolyamide masterbatch, but without sacrificing the stiffness and strength of Fil-s.

Abstract:
The conditions of the existence and transformations of surface electromagnetic waves (SEWs) on metals (surface plasmons) and dielectrics (phonon-polaritons) are discussed. Interferometric SEW experiments provide the possibility for the direct determination of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constants at the frequencies in the tuning range of a free electron laser (FEL) without any preliminary models. The important role of the outstanding facilities of FEL—namely, the broad tuning range, high power, narrow bandwidth of emission, and well-collimated beam—in SEW experiments is outlined. It is demonstrated by the examples of the infrared absorption spectra of a Langmuir-Blodgett film on metal, of a metal oxide film, and of polymeric films of nanometer thicknesses on metals. Free surfaces of single-crystal CaF2 and the thin polymeric film were studied by an interferometric experiment for the optical constant determination. Nonlinear spectroscopic applications of the SEW-FEL technique to studies of a second harmonic generation (SHG)—the frequency dependence of efficiency, the angle dependence of SHG, and the influence of a thin-film deposition on a quartz surface—are described.

Abstract:
Abstract Nonstoichiometric GeO_0.5[SiO_2]_0.5 and GeO_0.5[SiO]_0.5 germanosilicate glassy films are produced by the high-vacuum coevaporation of GeO_2 and either SiO or SiO_2 powders with deposition onto a cold fused silica substrate. Then the films are subjected to furnace or laser annealing (a XeCl laser, λ = 308 nm, pulse duration of 15 ns). The properties of the samples are studied by transmittance and reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. As shown by analysis of the Raman spectra, the GeO[SiO] film deposited at a substrate temperature of 100°C contains amorphous Ge clusters, whereas no signal from Ge–Ge bond vibrations is observed in the Raman spectra of the GeO[SiO_2] film deposited at the same temperature. The optical absorption edge of the as-deposited GeO[SiO_2] film corresponds to ~400 nm; at the same time, in the GeO[SiO] film, absorption is observed right up to the near-infrared region, which is apparently due to absorption in Ge clusters. Annealing induces a shift of the absorption edge to longer wavelengths. After annealing of the GeO[SiO_2] film at 450°C, amorphous germanium clusters are detected in the film, and after annealing at 550°C as well as after pulsed laser annealing, germanium nanocrystals are detected. The crystallization of amorphous Ge nanoclusters in the GeO[SiO] film requires annealing at a temperature of 680°C. In this case, the size of Ge nanoclusters in this film are smaller than that in the GeO[SiO_2] film. It is not possible to crystallize Ge clusters in the GeO[SiO] film. It seems obvious that the smaller the semiconductor nanoclusters in an insulating matrix, the more difficult it is to crystallize them. In the low-temperature photoluminescence spectra of the annealed films, signals caused by either defects or Ge clusters are detected.

The thin film of Sb2Se3 was deposited by thermal evaporation method and the film was annealed in N2 flow in a three zone furnace at a temperature of 290oC for 30 min. The structural properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. It is seen that the as-deposited film is amorphous and the annealed film is polycrystalline in nature. The surface of Sb2Se3 film is oxidized with a thickness of 1.15 nm investigated by X-ray photolecetron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and UV-vis spectroscopy measurements were carried out to study the optical properties of Sb2Se3 film. In addition, the first principles calculations were applied to study the electronic and optical properties of Sb2Se3. From the theoretical calculation it is seen that Sb2Se3 is intrinsically an indirect band gap semiconductor. Importantly, the experimental band gap is in good agreement with the theoretical band gap. Furthermore, the experimental values of n,k,varepsilon1, and varepsilon2 are much closer to the theoretical results. However, the obtained large dielectric constants and refractive index values suggest that exciton binding energy in Sb2Se3 should be relatively small and an antireflective coating is recommended to enhance the light absorption of Sb2Se3 for thin film solar cells application. AbstractAluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin film was prepared by sol–gel dip coating method from methanol and monoethanolamine respectively, used as solvent and stabilizer agent. From the XRD study, it was confirmed that the aluminum was incorporated into the ZnO lattice. The prepared film have polycrystalline in nature and the film exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure with (002) direction. SEM and AFM studies showed well defined smooth and uniformed wrinkle shaped grains distributed regularly on to the entire glass substrate without any pinholes and cracks. From the optical study, the observed highest transmittance was about 82% in the visible range and the band gap is 3.15 eV. Room temperature PL spectra exhibited a strong UV emission peak located at 390 nm for the deposited film. The electrical properties of the AZO thin film was studied by Hall-Effect measurement and found that it has n-type conductivity with low resistivity (ρ) of about 9.06 × 10^–3 Ω cm.

We propose the analytical models describing misfit stress relaxation in α-Ga2O3/α-Al2O3 film/substrate heterostructures taking into account the crystal lattices anisotropy of the heterostructure materials. We consider the nucleation of misfit dislocations as a result of basal or prismatic slip in α-Ga2O3/α-Al2O3 heterostructures with various film orientations. We calculate and analyze the dependences of the critical thickness hc (film thickness above which the nucleation of misfit dislocations is favorable) on the angle ϑ between the polar c-axis and the normal to the film growth plane for α-Ga2O3/α-Al2O3 heterostructures. We demonstrate that accounting for elastic constant C14 is not critical in the considered relaxation models for the α Ga2O3/α Al2O3 heterostructures.

AbstractIndium–tin oxide (ITO) thin films on polyethylene-terephthalate film substrates are fabricated at room temperature by reactive magnetron sputtering. The minimum of the resistivity of ITO films formed at room temperature is 4.5 × 10^–4 Ω cm. The laser annealing of ITO films from 140 to 600 nm in thickness increases their conductivity from 10 to 24% depending on the energy density to the film and irradiation dose. It is established that the laser annealing of films up to 250 nm in thickness is efficient at an energy density in the range from 12 to 35 mJ/cm^2. Films from 390 to 600 nm in thickness should be annealed by laser radiation with an energy density of no lower than 46 mJ/cm^2. A model problem taking into account the influence of radiative cooling and heat exchange of the film and the substrate on the variation in the film temperature over time during laser annealing is considered. A one-dimensional thermal conductivity equation for a bilayer medium is used. The maximal stresses in the ITO film under various annealing modes are calculated.

Abstract:
The atomic structure, electronic and optoelectronic properties of nanosized films of carbon nanotubes with seamless cross-shaped X- junctions are studied. It is established that the topology of the arrangement of non-hexagonal elements in the contact region of nanotubes determines the energy stability of the atomic structure. It is revealed that the pore size of the film determines the type of conductivity. At the smallest pore sizes, the film is characterized by a metallic type of conductivity; with an increase in pore size, the gap in the band structure also increases and the film becomes semiconductor. Films with a minimum gap size exhibit good photovoltaic properties. The photocurrent for the considered film models can reach 2.4 mA•cm-2 in the atmosphere and 3.25 mA•cm-2 outside the atmosphere. The presence of a gap in the band structure makes nanosized films promising for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

We investigate electrical properties of mono- and bilayer single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films located on silicon oxide substrates. The substrate is a silicon dioxide crystal film characterized by a P42/mnm space group with (100) surface. The single-walled carbon nanotubes are armchair nanotubes of subnanometer diameter (4,4) and nanometer diameter (7,7). It is found that the diameter of the nanotubes is of great importance and determines the electronic properties of the film on the substrate in a large degree. Thin tubes (4,4) formed in a bilayer film (with a reciprocally perpendicular orientation relative to each other) have the least resistance. The substrate has insignificant influence on the electronic properties of such a film. Films with larger diameter tubes are characterized by a higher resistance value. It is found that the important role is played by the contact surface of the SWCNT–substrate.

Abstract:
Low electrical conductivity of PEDOT : PSS film is to some extent a limit for its wide application. To solve this problem, the high voltage electric field was used to improve the film's electrical conductivity and its effects on the film's structure and properties were investigated. The PEDOT : PSS film was prepared on quartz substrate with spin coating. Visible light transmittance of the prepared film was tested with UV-Visible spectroscopy and chemical structure was measured with Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy (FTRM). The surface morphology was characterized with AFM, and electrical conductivity was measured with Hall effects measurement. The results showed that with the increase of the electric field, the electrical conductivity of PEDOT : PSS film was boosted rapidly at first, and then improved slowly when the electric field was above 200 kV/m. The film's electrical conductivity improved more than 17 times in total from 0.51·10-3 up to 8.92·10-3 S/m. However, the film's visible light transmittance decreased only a little with the increase of the electric field, not more than 3%. In addition, despite little change in the chemical structure of the PEDOT : PSS film, its surface roughness increased significantly with the increase of the electric field intensity. AbstractThe thin-film structures made of LiNbO_3 and obtained via laser ablation and magnetron sputtering are studied with volt-farad and volt-ampere characteristics. A potential barrier on the Si–LiNbO_3 interface was found for both types of the films with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The current-voltage characteristics showed that there are several conduction mechanisms in the structures studied. The Poole–Frenkel effect and the currents limited by a space charge mainly contribute to the electrical conductivity in the LiNbO_3 film produced with the laser ablation method. The currents limited by a space charge contribute to the main mechanism in the film heterostructure obtained with the magnetron sputtering method.

A non-thermal photoinduced semiconductor-metal phase transition occurring over a time Δt <1ps in a vanadium dioxide film on an aluminum substrate is theoretically investigated. It is shown that under the action of a short laser pulse in the VO2 film a structure of metal and semiconductor layers parallel to the substrate is formed. The dependence of the layer thickness on the energy density W of the laser pulse is obtained. A diagram is constructed that determines the number of layers depending on the energy density W of the laser pulse and the thickness a of the film. A comparison with experimental data is made.

In the framework of the phenomenological theory of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire, the features of the phase transition in a thin ferroelectric film in external electric field are investigated depending on the film thickness and the type of polarization fixed on its surface. It was found that the phase transition mechanism changes in an electric field. In addition to specific diffusing, which differs from diffusing in a bulk material by the appearance of a temperature range with an anomalously high susceptibility near temperature Tc, the phase transition shifts in temperature, and the shift value depends on the film thickness, its surface properties and in a weak fields does not depend on the field strength.

Abstract:
Biomass burning (BB) is a major source of atmospheric particles over Indochina during the dry season. Moreover, Indochina has convoluted meteorological scales, and regional meteorological conditions dominate the transport patterns of pollutants. This study focused on the impacts of BB emission inventories and atmospheric reanalyses on simulated PM10 over Indochina in 2014 using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Meteorological fields to input to CMAQ were produced by using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulation with the United States National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP FNL) Operational Global Analysis or European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis (ERA-interim). The Fire INventory from NCAR (FINN) v1.5 or the Global Fire Emissions Database including small fires (GFED v4.1s) was selected for BB emissions for the air quality simulation. The simulation case with NCEP FNL and FINN v1.5 (FNL + FINN) performed best throughout 2014, including the season when BB activities were intensified. The normalized percentage difference for maximum daily mean PM10 concentrations at Chiang Mai for FNL + FINN and the two simulation cases applying GFED v4.1s for BB emissions (−53% to −27%) was much larger than that between the FNL + FINN and ERA + FINN cases (10%). BB emission inventories more strongly impacted PM10 simulation than atmospheric reanalyses in highly polluted areas by BB over Indochina in 2014.

AbstractIt is shown that during low-temperature (300–500 K) intercalation of sodium atoms into thin multilayer graphene and graphite films on rhenium the first graphene layer plays the role of a trap to which atoms coming on the surface diffuse through a graphite film. The intercalation phase of the interlayer space in the graphite bulk is actively filled at a sodium atoms concentration under the first graphene layer close to the maximum possible (2 ± 0.5) × 10^14 cm^–2. This phase capacity is proportional to the graphite film thickness that can be varied in this work from one graphene layer to ~50 atomic layers. The diffusion energy E _ d of Na atoms through the graphite film was estimated to be E _ d ≈ 1.4 eV.

AbstractThin Zr-stabilized SnO_2 films are fabricated by ion-beam reactive sputtering. The amorphous thin-film SnO_2 samples with various Zr concentrations are synthesized in a single production process. The influence of heat treatment on the structure and electrical properties of the synthesized films is studied. The onset of crystallization in thin-film Sn–Zr–O systems is observed at 673 and 773 K, which is accompanied by the appearance of metastable phases. Being heated to 873 K, these phases are transformed into Sn + Sn_2O_3. It is found that the electrotransfer the film crystallization at temperatures close to room temperature is thermally activated with an activation energy of ~0.78 eV. Tin-oxide films doped with Zr from 0.6 to 3.9 at % manifest the property of hydrogen-gas sensitivity after crystallization.

In this work, the composition, morphology, and electronic structure of SiO2 nanofilms of various thicknesses, created by thermal oxidation on the Si(111) surface, have been studied. It is shown that up to a thickness of 30–40 Å, the film has an island character. At d ≥ 60 Å, a homogeneous continuously film of SiO2 is formed and the stoichiometric surface roughness of which does not exceed 1.5 - 2 nm. Regardless of the film thickness of the SiO2 appreciable interdiffusion of atoms at the interface SiO2-Si not observed. The regularities of the change in the composition, the degree of surface coverage, and the energy of plasma oscillations with a change in the thickness of the SiO2/Si(111) films in the range from 20 to 120 Å have been determined.

Two different properties of fibre-metal laminate composites (FML), including the fire behaviour and mechanical properties, were experimentally studied in this paper. The fibre-metal laminate composites studied were made of aluminium alloy 2024-T3, carbon fibre, flax, kenaf and epoxy resin/hardener arranged in different forms. The aims of the study are to assess the fire behaviour of the composites using ISO2685 standard and mechanical properties of the composite after withstanding the burn-through according to the standard. The fire test was carried out using ISO2685 standard using a propane-air burner, whereby the propane gas and air serves as the fluid to the system. The universal testing machine of the 100 kN load cell and gun tunnel were used for the mechanical properties test according to each test standard. The fire results showed that three of the FML composites considered in the study are fireproof composites while carbon fibre kenaf reinforced aluminium laminate (CARALL4) is a fire resistant composite. Carbon fibre reinforced aluminium laminate with aluminium alloy at the front and the rear face (CARALL2) withstood higher flame temperature than the other FML composites with 14.4%, 49.0% and 82.8% greater than CARALL1, CARALL3 and CARALL4 in terms of thermal conductivity. In terms of mechanical properties, it was also CARALL2 that has higher tensile, compressive, flexural and impact strength. Therefore, the study showed that carbon fibre flax reinforced aluminium laminate (CARALL3) which is the hybrid composite with green fibre can compete with fibre-metal laminate composites of pure synthetic fibre in terms of their properties.

AbstractThe results of examination of the electronic structure of the conduction band of naphthalenedicarboxylic anhydride (NDCA) films in the process of their deposition on the surface of oxidized silicon are presented. These results were obtained using total current spectroscopy (TCS) in the energy range from 5 to 20 eV above the Fermi level. The energy position of the primary maxima of the density of unoccupied states (DOUS) of an NDCA film was determined based on the experimental TCS data and calculated data and compared with the position of the DOUS maxima of a naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTCDA) film. The theoretical analysis involved calculating the energies and the spatial distribution of orbitals of the molecules under study at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) DFT (density functional theory) level and correcting the obtained energies in accordance with the procedure that was proven effective in earlier studies of the conduction band of films of small conjugated organic molecules. It was found that the DOUS maxima of the NTCDA film in the studied energy interval from 5 to 20 eV above the Fermi level are shifted toward lower electron energies by 1–2 eV relative to the corresponding DOUS maxima of the NDCA film Subdivision of the Ufa Federal Research Centre of the .
