Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of the prospects for bio-solar energy conversion. The Global Artificial Photosynthesis meeting at Lord Howe Island (14–18 August 2011) underscored the dependence that the world has placed on non-renewable energy supplies, particularly for transport fuels, and highlighted the potential of solar energy. Biology has used solar energy for free energy gain to drive chemical reactions for billions of years. The principal conduits for energy conversion on earth are photosynthetic reaction centres – but can they be harnessed, copied and emulated? In this communication, we initially discuss algal-based biofuels before investigating bio-inspired solar energy conversion in artificial and engineered systems. We show that the basic design and engineering principles for assembling photocatalytic proteins can be used to assemble nanocatalysts for solar fuel production.

AbstractThe word of the Lord of Hosts came to me: These are the words of the Lord of Hosts: I have been jealous for Zion, fiercely jelous for her. Now, says the Lord, I have come back to Zion and I will dwell in Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the Lord of Hosts shall be called the Holy Montain. These are the words of the Lord of Hosts: Once again shall old men and old women sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each leaning on a stick because of their great age; and the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls, playing in the streets. These are the words of the Lord of Hosts: Even if it may seem impossible to the survivors of this nation on that day, will it also seem impossible to me? This is the very words of the Lord of Hosts. These are the words of the Lord of Hosts: See I will rescue my people from the countries of the east and the west, and bring them back to live in Jerusalem. They shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and justice. Zechariah 8,1-8 (NEB)

Full text
Abstract:
The dispenser is a fuel pumping and measurement device used in the service station. During the refueling process of volatile liquid, the cavitation phenomenon occur easily due to the large flow rate. The serious cavitation will not only reduce the pumping efficiency, produce loud work noise, but also aggravate the pollution of oil and gas and the energy consumption of the system. Therefore, it is necessary to control the maximum flow rate of the pump. Based on this problem, this paper firstly designs a new flow control valve, and a method of mathematical modeling is proposed to analyze the flow field distribution and the working principle of the whole device based on Euler equation and Bernoulli equation. Then we combine this new hydraulic device to the variable frequency dispenser, a new design of the dispenser structure and a control mode of the maximum flow are proposed. The theoretical research shows that the maximum flow can be limited by optimizing diameter ratio of that flow control valve.

Full text
Abstract:
Stand-level fuel reduction treatments in the Canadian boreal zone are used predominantly in community protection settings to alter the natural structure of dominant boreal conifer stands such as black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia). The aim of these fuel treatments is to inhibit the development of fast-spreading, high-intensity crown fires that naturally occur in boreal forest ecosystems. We document fuel treatment design standards used in boreal forests in Canada and review data requirements and methodological approaches for investigating fuel treatment effects on fire behaviour. Through a series of illustrative examples and summaries of empirical observations, we explore the implications of data and modelling assumptions used to estimate fire behaviour in fuel-treated areas and identify insights about fuel treatment effectiveness in boreal conifer stands. Fuel treatments in black spruce, jack pine and lodgepole pine stands were generally effective at reducing modelled and observed fire behaviour and inhibiting crown fire development and spread under low to moderate fire weather conditions. Evidence suggests that fuel treatments in these fuel types will be ineffective when rates of spread and wind speeds are very high or extreme. High surface fuel loads combined with the relatively short stature of boreal conifer trees can further undermine fuel treatment efforts. Priority areas for future study include examining alternatives for managing surface fuel loads in treated stands, exploring the viability of alternative horizontal fuel reduction protocols such as clumped fuel configurations, and integrating suppression and containment strategies within the fuel treatment planning and design process.

Journal of Educational Evaluation for Health Professions 11 (November 27, 2014): 33. http://dx.doi.org/10.3352/jeehp.2014.11.33.

Abstract:
Purpose: In South Korean ferry disaster in 2014, the captain abandoned the ship with passengers including high school students still aboard. We noticed the resemblance of abandoning the ship with passengers still aboard the ferry (named the Sewol) and the ship Patna, which was full of pilgrims, in Joseph Conrad’s novel “Lord Jim.” The aim of this study is to see how medical students think about the role of a medical doctor as a captain of a ship by analyzing book reports on Conrad’s “Lord Jim.” Methods: Participants included 49 third-year medical students. Their book reports were analyzed. Results: If placed in the same situation as the character of Jim, 24 students of the 49 respondents answered that they would stay with the passengers, while 18 students indicated they would escape from the ship with the crew. Most of the students thought the role of a doctor in the medical field was like that of a ‘captain.’ The medical students reported that they wanted to be a doctor who is responsible for his or her patients, highly moral, warm-hearted, honest, and with high self-esteem. Conclusion: In conclusion, we found that “Lord Jim” induced the virtue of ‘responsibility’ from the medical students. Consequently, “Lord Jim” could be good teaching material for medical humanities.

This study analyzes the quarrel of the town council of Mirabel against the injury inflicted by the lords of the village. The site belonged to the council of Plasencia and in 1488 it was granted to the lord Francisco de Estúñiga. Since the beginning, lords tried to control the council offices, impose new taxes and especially deprive the peasants from the right to own their land. This last point was the main cause of disputes between the lord and his vassals. In general, peasant resistance was peaceful because it took a judicial route, but on two occasions conflict broke out in a violent manner, the last culminating in a death and several wounded on the lords’ side. The punishment for this altercation was rigorous, but it did not break the will of the peasants to continue resisting abuses on the part of the lord.

It is always a good idea to start with a text. Where better for a lawyer to find his than in a speech by Lord Wilberforce. During the debate on the Bill which became the Law Commissions Act 1965, the Act which established the two Law Commissions in London and Edinburgh as full time law reform agencies, Lord Wilberforce said: ‘law reform is much too serious a matter to be entrusted to lawyers’. What I should like to try to do in this paper is to give some consideration to the role of lawyer and layman (especially legislators) in the process of reforming our law. By ‘reform’ I mean improvement of the law. Mere change should not be confused with useful reform.

This paper explores the reasons for the proposed abolition of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords and its replacement by a new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. It focuses on the principal justification now advanced for the project, namely the need to institute full judicial independence. It does so very much in the spirit of the argument recently made by Lord Steyn in Counsel (although it comes to a very different conclusion from Lord Steyn's): even if there is a clear commitment to the reform of the United Kingdom's highest judiciary, the nature of that reform should depend entirely on the reasons for change. It is necessary to be clear on those reasons and to weigh them carefully.

Abstract:
During periods with epidemic mountain pine beetle ( Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) populations in lodgepole pine ( Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) forests, large amounts of tree foliage are thought to undergo changes in moisture content and chemistry brought about by tree decline and death. However, many of the presumed changes have yet to be quantified. In this study, we quantified and compared fuel moisture, chemistry, and resulting flammability of bark beetle affected foliage in terms of ignitability, combustibility, consumability, and sustainability at a site in far eastern Idaho, USA. Results revealed substantial decreases in moisture content, the proportion of starches and sugars, and crude fat and increases in the proportions of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in foliage of trees attacked in the previous year (yellow foliage) or more than two years previously (red foliage). Increases in emission rates of several terpenes that were correlated with flammability were also detected in yellow foliage. The flammability of fresh yellow and red foliage increased with regard to ignitability and sustainability, with shorter times to ignition, lower temperatures at ignition, and higher heat yields when compared with unattacked green foliage. Our results confirm the overwhelming importance of fuel moisture on flammability and suggest that fuel chemical composition also has significant effects on lodgepole pine foliage flammability.

Abstract:
We evaluated soil conditions of rehabilitated log landings in the Interior Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone of British Columbia during the first 3 years after treatment and the growth of lodgepole pine ( Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) on these log landings over 8 years. Rehabilitation treatments included combinations of tillage and the addition of either stockpiled topsoil or one of three organic amendments: hog fuel, sort-yard waste, and a wood waste – biosolids compost. The woody amendments were either applied as a surface mulch or incorporated into the soil after tillage. Tillage and addition of wood waste reduced soil bulk density and increased carbon content. Daytime soil temperatures in summer were lower under a hog fuel mulch than for the other treatments. The plots receiving hog fuel also had higher soil moisture content. One year after treatment, soil mechanical resistance for untreated soils, and those that were simply tilled, exceeded 2500 kPa for much of the growing season. Plots receiving wood waste had lower mechanical resistance. Use of wood waste in rehabilitation improved soil conditions and contributed to improved survival rates for planted lodgepole pine seedlings. Height growth after 8 years was not significantly affected by the treatments.

Abstract:
Of the five fundamentals of Islam, Zakat occupies the second position. This word is derived from Zakd, which means it (a plant) grew. The second derivative of this word carries the sense of purification, e. g. Qad aflaha man zakkaha (he is indeed successful who purified himself). The other word used for zakat both in the Qur'an and the Hadith is sadaqa which is derived from sidq (the truth). Both these words are highly meaningful. The spending of wealth for the sake of Allah purifies the heart of man of the love of material wealth. The man who spends it offers that as a humble gift before the Lord and thus affirms the truth that nothing is dearer to him in life than the love of Allah and that he is full prepared to sacrifice everything for His sake. Secondly, zakat is the most effective measure to improve the economic condition of the have-nots. It is not, however, a mere tax, but a form of worship whereby a man comes close to his Lord. The Muslims have, therefore, been enjoined to pay zakat with the same sense of earnestness and devotion in which the seeker of the Lord observes the prayer.

A protected outside burning motor was the creation proposed by Robert Stirling to save human existence and materials. This motor is imagined for working with various temperatures without start inside by squander heat recuperation. It is worked by cyclic pressure and extension measure. The plan interaction includes the plan of chambers, heat expansion, dismissal, proficiency, power yield and some more. This motor is agreeable for individuals since it is very, less loud and minimized in size and alpha motor has more noteworthy proportion contrasted with different sorts. It is elective fuel hotspot for other fuel. This is efficient power energy application. This present’s development and execution trial of an alpha-type Stirling motor.

Three continuing series of recordings are represented by new releases this year. The systematic coverage of Mass Propers in Graduale Novum begun by Johannes Berchmans Göschl continues with the participation of three other directors, including his pupil Stephan Zippe, mentioned last year. Alexander M. Schweitzer, who was Göschl's associate choir director earlier and has made several recordings with his Oslo ensemble, has grouped Masses for the Easter vigil, Easter day, Easter Monday, and the second and third Sundays of Easter (no. 1 in the following list). Göschl grouped the first five Sundays in Ordinary Time with the thirty-third Sunday (no. 2). Franz Karl Prassl directed his female ensemble in five Mass Propers of the Christmas season: Holy Family, Mary Mother of God, Second Sunday after Christmas, Baptism of the Lord and Presentation of the Lord (no. 3). All carry on the fine chant interpretations that represent these melodic restitutions to full advantage.

The feeling of loneliness to find the turning point in life is the great motivation for noble creatures to meet the Lord. It is started from the awareness toward the hazardous of unsatisfying life which is full of hedonisms. Someone only can get a real satisfaction in his life when God blesses him, when he realizes that God is near. Human should keep struggle to gain such life. Edy A Effendy’s Sajadah Terakhir reflects the hard effort of human being to get close to his Lord. Many symbols which are used in this poem, and it becomes a mystery that should be revealed. Those symbols are used to describe the struggle of human to meet his God. Abstract:
Traditionally, vibration measurement is done using an accelerometer or Laser Doppler Vibrometer, which is an intrusive and single point measurement respectively. This paper demonstrated vibration signal extracted from a perceptually invisible vibrating object using only a camera non-intrusively at full-field capacity. the camera that is capable to capture 1000 frames-per-second video was used to capture the motion of the vibrating object. Each frame of the video was decomposed using complex shearlet transform and the extracted signal was compared to an accelerometer. Shearlet decomposed each frame of the video into complex coefficients which were later used to recover the motion between two consecutive frames. Phase information that were used to retrieve the vibration signal were weighted to decrease unwanted noise. Resonant frequencies of a simply supported beam at 104.0 Hz, 209.5 Hz and 396.0Hz were successfully recovered. Single frequency extraction from an excited loud-speaker at specific frequencies were also conducted and showed a clear peak-to-valley frequency spectrum recovery. the potential of using camera as a full-field displacement measurement where each pixel acting as a vibrometer was explored. Full-field test to recover the mode shape of a circular membrane showed promising result with eight mode shapes successfully retrieved. the experiments proved that each individual pixel was able to retrieve motion at subpixel level that is at 0.00001 pixel scale.

Abstract:
AbstractSurveys have shown radio-loud (RL) quasars constitute 10%-15% of the total quasar population and rest are radio-quiet (RQ). However, it is unknown if this radio-loud fraction (RLF) remains consistent among different parameter spaces. This study shows that RLF increases for increasing full width half maximum (FWHM) velocity of the Hβ broad emission line (z < 0.75). To analyse the reason, we compared bolometric luminosity of RL and RQ quasars sample which have FWHM of Hβ broad emission line greater than 15000km/s (High Broad Line or HBL) with which have FWHM of Hβ emission line less than 2500km/s (Low Broad Line or LBL). From the distributions we can conclude for the HBL, RQ and RL quasars are peaking separately and RL quasars are having higher values whereas for the LBL the peaks are almost indistinguishable. We predicted selection effects could be the possible reason but to conclude anything more analysis is needed. Then we compared our result with Wills & Brotherton (1995) and have shown that some objects from our sample do not follow the pattern of the logR vs FWHM plot where R is the ratio of 5 GHz radio core flux density with the extended radio lobe flux density.

Participants in the study (N = 21) engaged in two one-on-one interview sessions with the investigator. During each session, participants "thought out loud" as they studied one solo score and one full score of music by various composers. Interviews were conducted in an effort to assess preexisting knowledge of the music being studied and to assess participants' perceptions about score study. Results indicated three primary themes: (1) a lack of transfer of preexisting knowledge into certain score-study procedures, (2) an increase in specificity of verbal responses that seemed to correspond with education and experience, and (3) a lack of audible sound used during score preparation within full-score settings. Other findings suggest a contextual basis for score-study procedures and reflect changes in score-study patterns that seem influenced by experience and education.

Abstract:
Spin-momentum locking is a universal wave phenomenon promising for applications in electronics and photonics. In acoustics, Lord Rayleigh showed that surface acoustic waves exhibit a characteristic elliptical particle motion strikingly similar to spin-momentum locking. Although these waves have become one of the few phononic technologies of industrial relevance, the observation of their transverse spin remained an open challenge. Here, we observe the full spin dynamics by detecting ultrafast electron cycloids driven by the gyrating electric field produced by a surface acoustic wave propagating on a slab of lithium niobate. A tubular quantum well wrapped around a nanowire serves as an ultrafast sensor tracking the full cyclic motion of electrons. Our acousto-optoelectrical approach opens previously unknown directions in the merged fields of nanoacoustics, nanophotonics, and nanoelectronics for future exploration.

Abstract:
Abstract:During the later sixteenth century, increasing competition for wood fuel supplies led to rising tension between Wealden cloth manufacturers and ironmasters and to a prolonged but unsuccessful campaign by clothiers seeking parliamentary legislation that would radically curtail iron production in the Cranbrook area. Remarkably revealing files among the papers of Sir John Leveson, one of Kent's late Elizabethan deputy lieutenants, show that during the winter of 1594–5, Cranbrook's frustrated clothiers and their allies among other chief inhabitants of the parish attempted to hijack plebeian distress over low wages and high food and fuel prices for their own ends. It is unlikely that those devising or encouraging industrial sabotage that winter included Cranbrook's richer clothiers, but they were certainly behind plans to mobilise a mass petition to the crown for the suppression of ironworks. In turn, two of Cranbrook's parish officials, deftly exploiting fears of a disorderly march on London, managed to persuade Sir John Leveson to lobby the privy councillor Lord Cobham on the clothiers’ behalf, although to no avail. Thereafter, Cranbrook clothiers vented their frustration against the Bakers of Sissinghurst, who owned the local iron forge and furnace, by frequently raiding the family's deer park, sometimes in conjunction with local gentry pursuing their passion for unlawful hunting.

This article discusses the period of Rasulullah saw hijriah which is an important moment in the history of Islam. The word hijriah means physically move to another place. Rasulullah saw and his companions moved from Mekkah to Yastrib which in 622 became Madinah. After the decease of Rasulullah, the context of hijrah changed; first, leaving a place full of kafir to a place full of Muslim, like the hijrah of Rasulullah saw from MEkkah to Madinah. Second, leaving bad behavior and sins to virtue Allah commands as explained in al-Qur'an; He said; " I will leave home for the sake of my LOrd" (Q.S 29;26). History notes the success of Rasulullah and his companions' hijrah was the result of good cooperation between generations; older generation (Ali ibn Abu Thali), and women (Asma binti Abu Bakar, Ummu Ma'nan, Shafiyah binti Abul Muthalib, etc.)

Abstract:
The epistle of James provides a window into a messianic movement that is beginning to develop into a community of faithful amidst a larger Hellenistic socio-cultural environment. It presents a series of exhortations crossing the spectrum of life situations audiences encounter as they settle into community together. Throughout the instruction, a foundational moral code is presupposed through which the author constructs the requisite worldview. Further, James speaks to this community through the full authority of ‘the name of the Lord’ and understands himself as both servant and teacher in this new life in light of the coming of that Lord (1:1; 3:1; 5:7–9). The last fourteen verses of the epistle offer a final essay on the need to stand fast through perseverance and prayer, as well as a summary statement of the goal of the entire effort. The formation of the community engenders a new action arising from the ‘implanted word’ that will produce a ‘kind of first fruits’ of God’s creatures who lead the way of salvation (1:18, 21; 5:19–20). The concluding injunction indicates that this way is tantamount to eschatological restoration.

Abstract:
This paper examines one of the literary techniques in J. R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings that creates “the depth effect”: texts’ insertion. The article’s author analyzes an insert text from the second part of the prologue (“The Herblore of the Shire”) and its integration in the main plot of the novel, and also looks into interchanges between the main text and insert ones, and Meriadoc’s role as one of the secondary narrators. The Lord of the Rings is full of insert texts of various genres and “The Herblore of the Shire” is merely one of them, but it shows that such texts are not isolated and not limited to single occasions. Throughout the novel they serve as quotations that link different plot episodes and organize them around the image of the secondary narrator. According to Tolkien’s creative position that he repeatedly stated in his letters, we can say that he carefully contemplated the ways of involving his reader in his fantastic world; that is why it is important to describe narrative and compositional techniques of the novel that served the author’s purpose.

Abstract:
Estimating seed orchards’ maternal and paternal gametic contributions is of importance in assessing the genetic quality of seed crops. The advantage of full over partial pedigree reconstruction in investigating the mating dynamics in a lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex. Loud. ssp. latifolia Engelm.) seed orchard population (N = 74) was demonstrated using nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite markers. We analyzed offspring of equivalent sample sizes representing full (bulk seed with unknown maternal and paternal parentage (n = 635)) and partial (11 maternal family arrays (n = 619)) pedigree reconstruction methods. Small differences in selfing rate, gene flow, and male reproductive success were observed between the two methods; however, the full pedigree reconstruction enabled simultaneous estimation of female-related fertility parameters (female reproductive success and effective number of maternal parents) that partial pedigree reconstruction could not provide. The use of bulk random sample of seed from orchards’ crops is recommended when male and female fertility parameters, as well as selfing and contamination rates, are needed for seed orchards’ seed crops genetic rating.

Conducting education as early as possible is an investment in further education as well as building a solid foundation of life. This period is a very important period, where at this time the human experience full development, so called as the golden age. Teaching theology can be done through songs. Chanting of children’s songs is a powerful weapon in building theological values towards the children. They can learn about the theological value contained in the song while they are singing happily. One of the Hindu children’s songs is Tri Murti. This Tri Murti song indirectly adds positive stimulus to the growth of the child. The lyrics of the song imply the concept of divinity in Hinduism with language that is easily understood by young children without having to peel deeper. Where the God of Hinduism has three main manifestations consisting of the Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are referred to as the three main devātas. These three gods are described as having different tasks and mastering different elements and different scriptures. With this song, young Hindu youths have been installed early on in theology and need not worry about other people’s accusations that Hindus worship a lot of God; Hinduism is a religion of polytheism and so on. In this song is very clearly mentioned that there are three manifestations of God called Tri Murti with different names, different characters, and different tasks. Nineteenth-century Europeans visiting Southeast and South Asia eulogised teak trees (Tectona grandis) for their value and beauty. Diplomatic diaries, travel memoirs, literary descriptions and geography books for children described the teak as a universal sovereign of the sylvan world, the regal “lord” of the forests. With dwindling supplies of oak in Britain, British elites saw teak as a vital component of the country's global naval supremacy in the nineteenth century. The fear of a dwindling supply of teak during the late eighteenth to the mid nineteenth centuries encouraged the creation of forestry departments and laws in British India that attempted to preserve the finite amount of teak in the sub-continent. Yet the finite ecologies of India and Burma could not supply all the teak required to fuel expanding demand. Britain would have to look beyond its formal empire in Asia to find more teak.

Abstract:
Introduction. In 1275, two drafts of town law of Freiburg im Breisgau were created. This article presents an analysis of one of these texts, namely the short draft. Methods and materials. The main research method is comparative historical analysis. The contents of two charters are compared, namely the 1218 Rodel draft and the short draft of 1275. Analysis. There are 6 thematic clusters uniting the laws by branches of law: 1) privileges of citizens and rights of the Town Lord; 2) criminal procedure law; 3) civil law; 4) town administration; 5) trade law; 6) various laws. The first part of the laws from the short draft is a translation of the Rodelian laws, the second one represents reformulated Rodelian norms, while the last one contains new laws in the legislation of Freiburg. Results. Though the document did not become an official town charter, it manifested the changes in the town law of the 13th century, compared to the previous 1218 Town Charter. In addition, the laws in the draft reflected the political struggle for power between the Town Lord of Freiburg, the City Council of 24 and the town community. The Town Lord regained his previously lost rights, in particular the legislative initiative. However, at the same time, the short draft significantly limited Lord’s arbitrariness towards the property of citizens as well as Freiburg citizens themselves. According to the short draft, the City Council of 24 strengthened and expanded its power in the town, becoming a full-fledged legislative and executive body of the town administration. The town community, on the other hand, was losing its privileges and rights, for example, it lost the opportunity to elect some of the civil servants and members of the Council of 24.

Abstract Use of groundcovers in the landscape is often limited by slow establishment when compared to turf. Hedera helix L. (English ivy), Euonymus fortunei ‘Coloratus’ (Turcz.) Hand.-Mazz. (purpleleaf wintercreeper euonymus) and Liriope spicata Lour. (creeping lily-turf) were evaluated in full sun and 60% shade to determine the effects of fertilizer applications on establishment and growth. Limited fertilizer × species interaction was detected, which may have been due, in part, to the soil incorporation of mushroom compost. Establishment and survivability of Hedera in full sun may have been influenced by lack of acclimation from shade to sun. There was no significant difference in establishment rates between Liriope and Euonymus; however, under shade Euonymus did not develop its characteristic fall color. Hedera was established in one season under 60% shade and, of these three species, can be considered the most competitive with turf under similar conditions for low traffic areas of the landscape.

Abstract:
A 3-m between crown spacing is a commonly cited criterion found in the wildland-urban interface fire literature for minimizing the likelihood of a fully-developed crown fire from occurring in a conifer forest on level terrain. The validity of this general recommendation is examined here in light of our current state-of-knowledge regarding crown fire propagation in relation to canopy bulk density. Given the characteristics of the overstory structure for 20 lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) stands located in Alberta, as sourced from the literature, the canopy fuel properties following a virtual thinning to a 3-m crown spacing and then to a targeted canopy bulk density of 0.05 kg/m3 were computed. On the basis of these computations, crown fire potential was then analyzed and interpreted. The conclusion reached is that, in the majority of cases, a less widely spaced stand would be adequate for preventing crown fire development in lodgepole pine forests.

The epoxidized group, also known as the oxirane group, can be considered as one of the most crucial rings in chemistry. Due to the high ring strain and the polarization of the C–O bond in this three-membered ring, several reactions can be carried out. One can see such a functional group as a crucial intermediate in fuels, polymers, materials, fine chemistry, etc. Literature covering the topic of epoxidation, including the catalytic aspect, is vast. No review articles have been written on the catalytic synthesis of short size, intermediate and macro-molecules to the best of our knowledge. To fill this gap, this manuscript reviews the main catalytic findings for the production of ethylene and propylene oxides, epichlorohydrin and epoxidized vegetable oil. We have selected these three epoxidized molecules because they are the most studied and produced. The following catalytic systems will be considered: homogeneous, heterogeneous and enzymatic catalysis.

We report Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 full-polarization observations of the lensed blazar PKS 1830−211 during its record-breaking radio and gamma-ray flare in the spring of 2019. The observations were taken close to the peak of the gamma activity and show a clear difference in polarization state between the two time-delayed images. The leading image has a fractional polarization about three times lower than the trailing image, implying that significant depolarization occurred during the flare. In addition, we observe clear intra-hour variability of the polarization properties between the two lensed images, with a quasi-linear increase in the differential electric-vector position angle at a rate of about two degrees per hour, associated with changes in the relative fractional polarization of ∼10%. This variability, combined with the lower polarization close to the peak of gamma activity, is in agreement with models of magnetic turbulence to explain polarization variability in blazar jets. Finally, the comparison of results from the full and differential polarization analysis confirms that the differential polarization technique (Martí-Vidal et al. 2016, A&A, 593, A61) can provide useful information on the polarization state of sources like gravitationally lensed radio-loud quasars.

Abstract:
The twentieth century has seen man’s mastery of the air, and fundamental to that achievement has been the provision of power to sustain the process of flight. For the first forty years the piston engine reigned supreme, yet for even longer now the power to fly has been provided by the gas turbine. In the conception and development of this prime mover Britain can justly claim to have led the world. Two servants of the Crown quite independently had the vision and that amalgam of creative and analytical powers to see what might lie beyond the piston engine — one a scientific civil servant working at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and the other, remarkably, a young RAF officer already distinguishing himself as a pilot. But the birth of the jet engine proved to be a painful process. While early aircraft designers had embraced the piston engine, neither Government nor the aircraft or aero engine industry showed interest initially in the gas turbine. The change in attitude began when war approached in 1939 and thereafter accelerated in the effort to move from bench demonstrator status to a full-production engine capable of contributing to the outcome of the war. It was in this difficult and complex process of transition that Dr Harold Roxbee Cox — Lord Kings Norton — was to play such a vital role. To appreciate his achievements it is appropriate to remind ourselves of the progress — or lack of it — on the gas turbine prior to his becoming involved.

Abstract:
Aims. We develop a formalism to model the luminosity functions (LFs) of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) at GHz frequencies by the cosmological evolution of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) hosted in their nuclei. The mass function and Eddington ratio distributions of SMBHs computed in a previous work published by one of the authors have been taken as the starting point for this analysis. Methods. Our approach is based on physical and phenomenological relations that allow us to statistically calculate the radio luminosity of AGN cores, corrected for beaming effects, by linking it with the SMBH at their centre, through the fundamental plane of black hole activity. Moreover, radio luminosity from extended jets and lobes is also computed through a power-law relationship that reflects the expected correlation between the inner radio core and the extended jets and lobes. By following a classification scheme well established in the field, radio-loud AGN are further divided into two classes, characterized by different accretion modes onto the central BH. If the Eddington ratio, λ, is ≤0.01 they are called low-kinetic (LK) mode AGN; if λ ≥ 0.01, they are called high-kinetic (HK) mode AGN, this critical value roughly corresponding to the transition between radiatively inefficient and efficient accretion flows. The few free parameters used in the present model are determined by fitting two different types of observational data sets: local (or low-redshift) LFs of radio-loud AGN at 1.4 GHz and differential number counts of extragalactic radio sources at 1.4 and 5 GHz. Results. Our present model fits well almost all published data on LFs of LK mode AGN and of the total AGN population up to redshifts z ≤ 1.5 and also in the full range of luminosities currently probed by data. On the other hand, it tends to underestimate some recent measures of the LF of HK mode AGN at low redshifts, but only at low radio luminosities. All in all, the good performance of our model in this redshift range is remarkable, considering that all the free parameters used but the fraction of HK mode AGN are redshift independent. The present model is also able to provide a very good fit to almost all data on number counts of radio-loud sources at 1.4 and 5 GHz.

Abstract:
With its clear-glass, brightly-lit, whitewashed interior, Harvard Divinity School's Andover Chapel reflects all the values of elite Protestant culture in New England history: quiet prayer, thoughtful sermons, an approach to God through the heart rather than the senses, and a minimum of iconic reminders that the space is Christian. And it was here, in April 2007, that this author beheld the Voudoun spirits Danbala and Ogoun arrive through several experienced mediums. The ceremony had not really been intended to call down the spirits, only to praise them in a kind of broad sampling of Haitian Voudoun songs.1 But the altar was full of their treats, the room was full, the drummers were good, the singing was loud, and the mediums were expert. So the spirits arrived: various Danbalas slithering across the floor and a very martial Ogoun huffing and puffing around the altar to get his rum. And they were greeted, with awed interest by the Harvard students, familiarity by the Haitians, and annoyed tolerance by one Adventist woman.

Abstract:
The baptism of Jesus and John, presented in the synoptic Gospels, shows it as an event full of the dynamics of the Spirit. It takes place according to the assumptions of each Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. In the Gospel of Mark Jesus shares with humanity the same nature that has been subjected to sin. Baptism becomes the beginning of a new saving economy in which it is necessary to bear witness. The essential element of this testimony is the cross which all His disciples have to share with the Lord. The community on the one hand then needs baptism as a way to go out, and on the other, it is strengthened by the gift of the Spirit that leads to the testimony.

Abstract:
The Old Hall is full tonight. Those outside who turn and see the line of festal light will not know that the windows are illumined by the brilliance of the company within. This audience is indeed most intimidatingly distinguished. These facts do proper honour to the memory of Francis Mann. He would have welcomed too the happy coincidence, given that Lady Fox is in the chair, that we also have the opportunity to celebrate the appointment of one of this century's greatest judges to the Order of Merit. Three such appointments were announced today. I hope we are allowed to think that Lord Denning has succeeded to the place of Sir Isaiah Berlin, one champion of liberty and human dignity following another.
