Abstract:
Continuing our coverage of South African theatre, which most recently featured a critical view of the policy of the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, by David Graver and Loren Kruger (in NTQ19), we now include a consideration by South African writer Stephen Gray of one of the Market's most recent productions, by assuredly its best-known playwright, Athol Fugard. My Children! My Africa! is, claims Fugard, ‘between me and my country’. Here, Stephen Gray acknowledges and analyzes the ways in which the play focuses with a new intensity upon the agony of Fugard's native land, as realized by a cast of three: two unknowns, plus the veteran John Kani – here cast, controversially, as a coward and traitor to his people. Stephen Gray has also edited the documentary volume on Athol Fugard in McGraw-Hill's ‘Southern African Literature’ series.

Abstract:
AbstractRunaway slaves can be considered one of the most common resistance aspects to slavery throughout its history. The formation of quilombos happened after an initial escape by the captives that would then be called quilombolas. The little escapes to visit family, friends and loved ones made possible to the captives spaces and fragments of ‘liberty’ so they could resist and exist in captivity during their lives. In this paper we seek to analyze, from the advertisements of runaway slaves taken from the Diário de Pernambuco and Jornal do Recife, how individual and collective escapes plagued the Brazilian slave institution in years of disintegration of the slave system. Keywords: Slavery, Escapes, Pernambuco.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The title, borrowed from Paul Henry Lang's description of Haydn's op. 20 string quartets in Music in Western Civilization, characterizes Haydn's endeavor to create more independent partwriting in the string quartet. First, Haydn's fugal practice is noteworthy particularly for the construction of the fugal exposition and his treatment of multiple subjects, the question of what constitutes a regular countersubject, and the treatment of redundant entries. Second, the chief strategy in these movements is the invention of invertible counterpoint in three voices. Haydn writes a double fugue (with a regular countersubject), as well as a triple and quadruple fugue, in which the principal issue is the ability of each subject (including the double fugue's countersubject) to serve as any voice——top, middle or bottom——in a texture of invertible counterpoint. The expertise he attained with these works then allows him to exploit the technique in later quartets, principally in the development sections of sonata-form movements. There, he uses invertible counterpoint to establish the independence of each voice, and to create longer passages unarticulated by cadences, sections distinct from the more clearly articulated periodic expositions and recapitulations. The three fugal finales of op. 20, therefore, constitute Haydn's advanced study not so much in fugal procedure as in the practice of invertible counterpoint.

Abstract:
The recent work of the South African dramatist Athol Fugard has addressed the present realities of a country undergoing traumatic change. But on whose behalf does it speak today? The common claim of critics has been that his work ‘bears witness’: but what does this claim amount to in the context of current debates about culture in South Africa? Central to these debates is the contextualizing work which has arisen out of the neo-Marxist emphasis on previously marginalized black dramatic forms: tending to supplant the liberal, universalizing approach which helped promote Fugard, this is fast becoming a new orthodoxy, diminishing his contribution and historic influence alike. In this article, Dennis Walder looks more closely at the European origins among the liberal-left of the idea of ‘bearing witness’, and considers its continuing potential as taken up by Fugard himself at a turning-point in the development of his plays – the moment from which sprang both Boesman and Lena and the collaborative Sizwe Bansi and The Island. These plays can still be understood to offer a voice to the voiceless – above all to Lena, the ‘Hotnot’ woman, an outcast among outcasts, who affirms her identity through her body and her language. Dennis Walder, who was born and brought up in South Africa and educated at the Universities of Cape Town and Edinburgh, is now Senior Lecturer in Literature at the Open University: a Dickens scholar, whose Dickens and Religion appeared in 1981, he also wrote the first book-length study of Athol Fugard (Macmillan, 1984), and is currently editing Fugard's plays for Oxford University Press.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the compositional procedures used in Brazilian fugues for piano and their influence on the resulting structures. Fifty-nine fugues composed between 1922 and 2009 were included. The scores were collected and analyzed as to their qualitative and quantitative aspects. In the latter, compositional procedures were verified in the resulting structures of the fugues. Non-contrapuntal writing was encountered in the episodes, reexpositions and coda in the fugues containing tonal subjects (69%), as well as in those with atonal subjects (31%). This procedure was also occasionally used to delimit sections, intensifying the perception of their resulting structures. The fugues with atonal subjects proved to have subject entries in their last reexposition at the same pitch as that in the exposition, thus revealing proximity of contrapuntal writing with polarization typical of tonal fugues.

Abstract:
The present thesis examines the instrumental fugues written by Beethoven during the last twelve years of his life (1815-27). It does not deal specifically with the fugati nor with the incidental fugues though these may on occasion be mentioned. The fugues to be discussed are therefore as follows: Op. 102 no.2 (III), Op. 106 (IV), Op. 110 (III), Op. 120(var. 32), Op. 133 and Op. 131 (I). The criteria by which the scope of the thesis has been restricted to these particular works are outlined during the Introduction which also includes a discussion of the style of analysis adopted and of the relevance of certain analytical methods. The aims of the thesis in dealing with these works are as follows: first and foremost it is intended that a series of detailed analyses of the late-period fugues be offered, since the fugue as a genre in Beethoven's music has suffered undue neglect. Secondly the thesis seeks to determine the means by which the fugue is integrated into the musical structure as a totality and to assess its role within that structure. Finally the thesis aims to establish whether or not the several fugues exhibit similar tendencies in respect of their tonal characteristics and thematic treatment. In order to fulfill the primary objective of the thesis, the fugues are considered individually, a chapter being devoted to each of them. These analyses form the bulk of the thesis and incorporated within them are observations relevant to the second objective of the thesis. For a number of reasons, enlarged upon during the Introduction, it has seemed fit to divide the analyses into two groups, those in Part II of the thesis being more substantial than are those in Part I. The conclusion deals with the third objective of the thesis by drawing out for further consideration and comparison the salient points from each analysis. In this manner, it is submitted, the present thesis will bridge a substantial gap in the Beethoven literature and in so doing afford fresh insights into certain of Beethoven's most exalted creations.

Abstract:
Although mild PVL are frequently asymptomatic, significant regurgitation can be associated with congestive heart failure, refractory haemolytic anaemia and a high long-term mortality. Surgical correction of PVL is indicated in these patients, as it has been associated with improved event-free survival when compared with conservative treatment. However, repeated surgeries are associated with high perioperative mortality and a significant rate of PVL recurrence. The interest for transcatheter techniques is exponentially growing as an alternative treatment for PVL but the global experience remains limited to single-centre studies or small registries without long-term clinical follow-up. Therefore, uncertainties persist on the benefits and risks associated with this technique. Herein, we present a thesis that shows the efficacy of transcatheter reduction of PVL in symptomatic patients. In the first published work, by means of a systematic review and a meta-analysis, we showed that a successful transcatheter reduction of PVL is associated with a lower cardiac mortality rate and a greater improvement in functional class or haemolytic anaemia, compared with a failed intervention. Fewer repeated surgeries were also observed after successful procedures. In our second study, after comparing clinical outcomes following surgical or transcatheter treatment of PVL we found that surgery is associated with a reduction in the combined endpoint of all-cause mortality and rehospitalization for heart failure. However, surgery is associated with a higher risk of perioperative mortality and appears to be only beneficial well beyond one year of survival. Therefore, we believe that both techniques might play a role in our therapeutic arsenal and we suggest a treatment algorithm for patients with significant PVL.

The workshops first planned to investigate geographic thinking and spacial mapping of the patients, using map production, soon led to several other graphic productions. At first, these productions seemed only statistical noise, but as their images began to reappear, they turned into the center of the research. These marginal products were significant in the way that they troubled the connection between prison and its medicalization, and in the process, developed the heuristic of the "intensive map." This notion depends upon the concept of "intensive" developed by Deleuze and Guatarri, along with idea of the forthcoming, lines of flight, and deterritorialization (the last concept also emerging from Foucault's studies on prisons and madness). The workshops became, as such, an educational strategy for those interested in the cartography of contingency and the processes out of which intensive maps emerge. In this way, the idea of intensive geography became consistent.<br>Doutorado<br>Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte<br>Doutor em Educação

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the XcalableMP on the Fugaku supercomputer, the Japanese flagship supercomputer developed by FLAGSHIP2020 project in RIKEN R-CCS. The porting and the performance evaluation were done as a part of this project, and the XcalableMP is available for the Fugaku users for improving the productivity and performance of parallel programing. The performance of XcalableMP on the Fugaku is enhanced by the manycore processor and a new Tofu-D interconnect. We are now working on the next version, XcalableMP 2.0, for cutting-edge high-performance systems with manycore processors by multithreading and multi-tasking with integrations of PGAS model and synchronization models. We conclude this book with retrospectives and challenges for future PGAS models.
