Abstract:
Case Theory interacts with Government Theory in its operation and so, cases are assigned to the complements of governors. Case assigners are the governors of their dependent clauses while the case receivers are the governed NPs. So, the purpose of the study is to survey case assignment in Fulfulde generally by identifying and analysing the elements of Fulfulde structures and their relationship in terms of structural case. Unstructured observation was the method used for eliciting data for this study. Adequate and natural data were recorded and analysed sentence by sentence, the way they were uttered by the native speakers. The Theoretical Framework adopted for data analysis by this study is Principle and Parameters Theory. The study discovered that in Government, apart from (V)erbs, (P)repositions and tensed INFL, (N)ouns, (A)djectives and Focus Markers FMs can also govern and assign case to their complements in Fulfulde. The study has proved that in Fulfulde, cases can be assigned either to the left or to the right, depending on the relation.

Abstract:
In his efforts to communicate his research on African “tradition”—more specifically oral texts—Hampâté Bâ was faced with a choice of languages and alphabets. Much of his work appeared only in French, the language of his main formal education and administrative training. In collaboration with several French colonial scholar-administrators (Henri Gaden, Colonel R. Figaret, and Gilbert Vieillard) Hampâté Bâ eventually developed a system for writing his native Fulfulde in Roman characters. However for his own Fulfulde religious poetry (“mes seules oeuvres de ‘creation’”), Hampâté Bâ used Ajami (Arabic letters representing non-Arabic languages), a writing system that he also promoted as a medium of wider Fulbe literacy.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to analyse the changes of Fulfulde verb suffixes, with particular attention to Adamawa Dialect. The aim of the paper is to analyse verb suffixes to identify the nature of the changes and the conditions that trigger them. The study employed unstructured observation to collect the data and oral interview was used to validate them. Generative Phonology (GP) was adopted as the theoretical framework for data analysis in the study. The study reveals that both phonology and morphology interact in the process of changes that occur within the verb suffixes in Fulfulde. It shows that each voice has a single underlying suffix, which interacts with various tense suffixes to derive a complete verbal complex. Considering the various environments that have different suffixes with common characteristics across the three voices, the changes are found to be triggered by certain rule-based conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation shows that Fulfulde and Bambara language development is both comparable to language development in other world languages and is influenced by the phonetic and phonological characteristics of the languages of the environment, including phonotax. In fact, while findings on babbling data indicate that for vowel-like sounds there is no evidence of early specialization, for consonant-like sounds, universal aspects coexist with evidence of early specialization. Still at the babbling stage, analysis of consonant-vowel co-occurrence patterns in protosyllables shows an overrepresentation of labial + central combinations and cases of coronal + anterior in monolingual as well as in multilingual children's productions. At the first words stage, the acquisition of control of vocal cords' vibration, the velum and quantity is still ongoing until the age of 3 in children exposed to Fulfulde and Bambara. Moreover, the study of phonological development in Fulfulde and Bambara shows that universal aspects (related especially to biomechanical and aerodynamic constraints) and specialization's indices coexist, even at the first words stage. The study supports the existence of continuity between babbling and first words in children and describes multilingualism in the city of Douentza (Mali), where multilingual children participating in this study are growing up

Abstract:
This research aims at describing the current practice of code-switching in oral interaction in bilingual classes of Burkina Faso and didactical problems linked to this practice in a perspective of improvement. By a process of corpus linguistics, language tools, CLAN and Praat, are adapted to our bilingual context investigations on the basis of formal and functional theories of linguistics. For three years, 20h 36mn of movies of classroom activities and interviews were collected. The corpus has considered sequences of language arts classes and non-language subjects in all school classes we visited. After a standardized transcription with the CLAN software, specific codings suited to our theoretical orientation have been added to the software. Praat, a phonetic and acoustic analysis software, was associated to analyse pupils phonic difficulties. Quantitatively, the use of L1 and L2 tends to adhere to the official guidelines of the overall percentages of use of French and local languages. Qualitatively, the results of the analysis of inter-sentential, intra-sentential and extra-sentential code-switching highlight the linguistic, discursive, and didactic (for teachers) and acquisitional (for pupils) functions. Proposals for improvements were made. All hypotheses on pupils and teachers discourse, and on the software, have been tested

Shehu, Ahmadu. "Body Part Terms in Fulfulde: A Cognitive Linguistics Approach." Doctoral thesis, 2019. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/3508.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses the semantic extensions of Fulfulde body part terms from a cognitive linguistics perspective. Fulfulde is a West Atlantic language spoken in many African countries, but more densely in the Western sub-region of the content, by about 30 million people. The theoretical basis of the work stems from the embodiment hypothesis which assumes that the human body provides a universal template for the conceptualization, and therefore, expression of abstract concepts, through various cognitive processes, such as metaphors and metonymies (cf. Lakoff and Johnson, 1980). The data of the research was extracted from various written and oral sources, as well as the social media, providing a suitably sufficient linguistic expressions involving human body part terms extended into myriad of conceptual domains. The results of this study provide significant insight into the cognitive aspects of Fulfulde, a hitherto neglected topic in the description of language, and provides further case study of the embodiment hypothesis, as well as the conceptual metaphor theory, in general.

Diallo, Issa.

Full text
Abstract:
Du reste, l’étude fait ressortir que les TIC contribuent efficacement à l’harmonisation du Peul pour un enseignement-apprentissage plus efficient.<br>Language, the principal object of linguistics, is also located at the crossroads of other disciplines, anything that lies the issue of interdisciplinarity. In this thesis, it was question of cross-border African languages, including Fulani discussed in terms of its allocation for a teaching / learning process more efficient in an African context where ICT is no longer new. Indeed, the written sources of knowledge in Fulani are very localized. Thus, a newspaper, a book reading or mathematics produced in Senegal is unusable by learners of Burkina Faso. This raises a problem of harmonization of the Fulani, subject of this thesis which focuses exactly on the harmonization of the Fulani of ICT for teaching / learning process more efficient. The harmonization of the Fulani who can not be excluded from the process any of its dialects which are true wealth, part of its use for teaching / learning process more efficient, the efficiency being the ratio between the level of efficiency and resources (Gerard, 2001). For the Fulani, linguistic medium, actually participates in a teaching / learning process more efficient, ICT is a valuable tool, giving them "an opportunity to rethink and relocate in time and space, the exchange between teachers and students and thus promote the creation of new avenues for learning activities "(Karsenti, 2004, p. 268). Therefore, the objectives of this study have they been: better understanding of how ICT can promote harmonization of terminology and spelling of the Fulani; better understand how the distribution of Fulani resources on the Internet has an impact on the "positive development" that language; better understand how ICT can make more efficient teaching / learning of the Fulani. To achieve the research objectives, we used a methodology which granted a place of ICT in data collection. The thesis being drafted by sections, each objective has been linked with one of three articles. Moreover, the study revealed that ICT effectively contribute to the harmonization of the Fulani to a teaching / learning process more efficient.

Abstract:
This paper describes the translation mechanisms of a dialogue/conversation, specifically a phone call between two speakers who do not necessarily share the same linguistic code or the same cultural background using Information and communication technology (ICT). Its major concerns dwell on the integration, processing and translation of local languages, that is the establishment of an abstract model capable of attending to a large number of languages. The approach makes translation easier and favours the realisation of software systems in general, by integrating linguistic and cultural considerations into their development. The schema of the semantic analysis of a message, its methodology, the processing and the translation engine are well catered for. An implementation of one of the modules was successfully carried out in the translation of mini-texts in two Cameroonian languages, Yemba and Fulfulde. The end result aims to contribute to raise awareness on the introduction of teaching local languages and cultures in the official training programs in Cameroon as well as the socio-economic development of the peoples by making results of scientific discoveries available to the grassroots.
