This paper proposes a study in theoretical and experimental terms focused on the vibration beating phenomenon produced in particular circumstances: the addition of vibrations generated by two rotating unbalanced shafts placed inside a lathe headstock, with a flat friction belt transmission between the shafts. The study was done on a simple computer-assisted experimental setup for absolute vibration velocity signal acquisition, signal processing and simulation. The input signal is generated by a horizontal geophone as the sensor, placed on a headstock. By numerical integration (using an origina

Motile cilia are a striking example of the functional cellular organelle, conserved across all the eukaryotic species. Motile cilia allow the swimming of cells and small organisms and transport of liquids across epithelial tissues. Whilst the molecular structure is now very well understood, the dynamics of cilia is not well established either at the single cilium level nor at the level of collective beating. Indeed, a full understanding of this requires connecting together behaviour across various lengthscales, from the molecular to the organelle, then at the cellular level and up to the tissu

Bld10/Cep135 is a basal body outer cartwheel domain protein that has established roles in the assembly of nascent basal bodies. The primary vibration response was resonance excitation of the dominant whirling mode of the turbine. However, for a significant number of test cases, resonance behaviour was also observed in the bending strains of the airfoil support struts, primarily corresponding to higher natural frequencies. Furthermore, under various test conditions, vibration amplitude within the suppor

Abstract:
Oil whip induces self-excited vibration in fluid-handling machines, and what is worse, it can cause self-excited reverse precessional full annular rub, known as “dry whip”, which is a secondary phenomenon resulting from a primary cause, and may lead to a catastrophic failure of machines; that is, “coincidence of oil whip and dry whip” that occurs repeatedly with constant frequency and amplitude in small clearance cases. This paper presents a technique using an electromagnetic exciter (EE), that can raise the threshold of stability of a rotary machine and then eliminate the coincidence of oil w

Abstract:
The Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyers have been in Service since Jul 10 and have acquired a reputation for being a world class Air Defence asset with power and propulsion (P and P) fragility, that has attracted much positive and negative attention. This paper sets out how a range of circumstances combined in those early years to make the Class unique; a world leading ship not at her full potential. Many of the contributing factors have been discussed in isolation but have not been combined in one paper. The Type 45 has a modest class size of six vessels, yet each ship has the greatest capability
