Abstract:
This thesis develops a quantitative quality function deployment (QFD) method and integrates it with the methodologies of value engineering and risk analysis. Numerical parameters and scales allow measurement of product development and onward adjustment as the process unfolds. In QFD, customer requirements are usually defined in terms of design characteristics. In the method developed here, customer requirements are related to product functions. The use of value engineering then allows costs to be quantified. The analysis of design uncertainties allows the determination of risk factors.

The thesis synthesises current water utility practice, and economic theory, through the development of a practical water rate based on marginal cost pricing. The suggested water rate is a three part tariff consisting of volumetric, connection and access charges. The volumetric charges recover the long run marginal costs associated with water demand, and include peak and off-peak prices. They are calculated using an extension to the Turvey concept of long run marginal cost. The connection charges represent the marginal costs associated with connecting to the system, rather than those associated

Unit Price Method (UPM) and Unit Area Cost Method (UACM) are widely used in the cost of reinforced concrete multi-storey housing buildings. In this study, it is aimed to determine the cost estimation method with high performance (its use will provide an advantage to the estimator over the other) by comparing the cost estimates in the modeling by making “Regression Analysis” (RA), with the data of such struction. In the literature review, studies of equivalent and different structures were evaluated. In modeling; Number of rooms, floor area, total area, number of floors, floor height, facade ar

Vertical Navigation (VNAV) trajectory optimization has been identified as a means to reduce fuel consumption. Due to the computing power limitations of devices such as Flight Management Systems (FMSs), it is very desirable to implement a fast method for calculating trajectory cost using optimization algorithms. Conventional trajectory optimization methods solve a set of differential equations called the aircraft equations of motions to find the optimal flight profile. Many FMSs do not use these equations, but rather a set of lookup tables with experimental, or pre-calculated data, called a Per

Free Trade Agreements (FTA) attract significant interest, but after these treaties are signed not all exporters use them. We provide a model of heterogeneous utilization, also developing a novel method to estimate treaty-utilization costs. We later apply the model to estimate the evolution utilization costs for the FTA between the US and a small open economy, Chile. Consistent with other studies, we find that utilization is indeed partial (on average 67% on the first year of the treaty, with 10 percentage points more at the third year). This made tariff revenues to the US 10% higher than expec

Further reductions in NOx emissions while maintaining optimum engine performance can only be obtained by improving engine combustion control at the cylinder level. This requires cylinder level sensors capable of continuously monitoring combustion performance in both the main combustion chamber (MCC) and the pre-combustion chamber (PCC) and electronically actuated valves that can respond to those measurements. Until recently, in-PCC combustion measurements on spark ignited engines were only possible in the laboratory using very expensive pressure sensors with extremely short lives. Ion Sense of

Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) methods have been increasingly used in recent years to reduce the impact of construction operations on traffic and mobility. ABC methods, however, often require a higher initial cost, more planning, and additional design coordination. Several tools have been developed to assist decision-makers in the selection of conventional staged construction or ABC methods based on bridge characteristics and requirements. Most of these existing tools, however, are qualitative and depend on the subjective opinion of decision-makers/experts. Accordingly, there is a need

There are many issues to consider when implementing polymer flooding offshore. On the practical side one must handle large volumes of polymer in a cost-efficient manner, and it is crucial that the injected polymer solutions maintain their desired rheological properties during transit from surface facilities and into the reservoir. On the other hand, to predict polymer flow in the reservoir, one must conduct simulations to find out which of the mechanisms observed at the pore and core scales are important for field behavior. Truck platoons have many benefits over traditional truck mobility. Truck platoons have the potential to improve safety and reduce fuel consumption between 5% and 15%, based on platoon configuration. In Illinois, trucks carry more than 50% of freight tonnage and constitute 25% of the traffic on interstates. Therefore, expected fuel savings would be significant for trucks. Deployment of truck platoons within interstate highways may have a direct effect on flexible pavement performance, as the time between consecutive axle loads (i.e., resting time) is expected to decrease significantly. Results reveal that hospital respond to an absolute reduction in the capitation-based funding allocation method by improving their operation and management of health care resources.
