Typically, DFTs are measured in accordance with SSPC-PA 2, “Procedure for Determining Conformance to Dry Coating Thickness Requirements” (1), or other similar standards. Recent advancements in technology have resulted in DFT probes capable of achieving a higher rate of DFT data collection than previous devices. However, current standards do not take full advantage of the technology, and little is known of the effects of scanning probe wear on DFT accura

Abstract:
The fundamentals of rutting behavior for thin full-depth flexible pavements (i.e., asphalt thickness less than 12 inches) are investigated in this study. The scope incorporates an experimental study using full-scale Accelerated Pavement Tests (APTs) to monitor the evolution of each pavement structural layer's transverse profiles. The findings were then employed to verify the local rutting model coefficients used in the current pavement design method, the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Four APT sections were constructed using two thin typical pavement structures (seven-and

Full text
Abstract:
Grinding is an accepted repair method for stress corrosion cracking (SCC) on buried pipelines. Grinding is routinely performed while the pipeline remains in service (i.e., pressurized and flowing). When grinding on a live pipeline, there is a risk that the pipe wall will rupture, either by reducing the wall thickness to below that which is appropriate for the operating pressure or by causing the cracking that is being removed to become 'critical' or unstable as the result of increased local stresses, etc. This project involved a review of current limits, practices, and previous work relevant t

Full text
Abstract:
In the recent past years there has been a considerable amount of effort devoted to developing methods and instruments to correct measured pipe-to-soil potentials for IR drops that may occur from currents (from the cathodic protection system or stray sources) in the soil to obtain the polarized potential. However, many of the methods or instruments available are either time-consuming, cumbersome to use in the field, applicable to only certain types of cathodic protection systems and under particular circumstances, subject to influences from stray current sources or not fully developed as of yet

Abstract:
The use of coupons has been discussed and utilized for some time and is more prevalent in Europe than in the United States. Externally buried coupons have been utilized for different reasons including corrosion rate measurements, but their primary use has been for monitoring the effectiveness of a CP system. A detailed review of coupon studies is presented below. Renewed interest in the coupon technology was prompted by several studies performed by CC Technologies for PRCI that examined the use of off-potential measurements for evaluating the effectiveness of the CP system. Abstract:
This one year exploratory project investigated hydraulic architecture of apple dwarfing rootstocks. The hypothesis was that hydraulic conductance is correlated with rootstock vigor. A previous study of trees on three rootstocks in Israel showed that dwarfed trees used less water than un-dwarfed trees. Analysis showed that if the tree maintains leaf water potentials above minimum values, then this implies that the dwarfed trees have lower leaf conductance, which may also be the cause of dwarfing. The current project studied small 2-year old unworked rootstock trees, and full sized trees bearing

Abstract:
Prior full-scale research with the fire service was primarily designed to isolate specific tactics, most often either ventilation or suppression, which allowed researchers to develop science-based recommendations related to the specific components of fireground operations studied in relatively controlled conditions. The current project went beyond earlier research by conducting twenty experiments in eight acquired, single-family residential structures and that combined fireground tactics to quantify the impact of coordination between ventilation and suppression actions. The aim of the research reported was to develop ‘performance-based’ finite element modelling approaches and appropriate physical test procedures to approve petroleum road fuel tankers with novel designs that otherwise would not satisfy the current ‘design-based' requirements, i.e. to provide an alternative means of approval that gives more freedom to innovate while maintaining an equivalent (the same or a better) level of safety.
