Abstract:
The hydrodynamic behaviour of a 110 m2 full-scale submerged upflow biofilter, filled with 2.8 m of floating media and used for tertiary nitrification of treated domestic sewage was investigated. Residence time distributions were obtained from lithium chloride tracer experiments. Four trials were performed at 3.7 and 6.5–6.7 mh−1, once without aeration. Spatial differences in the mean residence time of a given cross-section were in the range of 30–40% and can be attributed to the distribution system of the influent at the bottom of the filter. The conditions of the non-ideal flow in reactors affect their performance; the common causes are short circuits, dead zones and internal recirculation by kinetics and/or density stream. In this study, the design of an anaerobic filter at full scale that treats cassava starch wastewater was optimized. It presented halt damming problems and low removal efficiencies. The initial hydrodynamic behavior showed the presence of dual flow (32% plug flow - PF and 37% mixed flow -MF), dead zones (20%) and absence of short circuits; additionally the modelling reactor indicated a high dispersion degree and

Decentralized treatment is an adequate strategy to more sustainably treat municipal wastewater in rural and peri-urban areas. In light of the above, this study evaluated, on a pilot scale, the performance of an anaerobic configuration consisting of a septic tank (ST) and an anaerobic filter (AF) in two modalities: (i) a conventional system (CS) in separate reactors and (ii) a hybrid system (HS) with a ST and an AF in a single reactor –both with theoretical hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 36, 30, 24, and 18 hours. The results indicated that the HS had a better performance (less variability)

One of the most important operating parameters for the operation and the design of biofilters is the headloss due to clogging of the system leading to a semi-continuous operation with filtration cycles and backwashes. Some basic aspects of the filtration operation have been studied. The work consists in understanding and modelling the clogging phenomena due to the suspended solids retention, and validating the simulation results by calibration with experimental and full-scale results. Tracer experiments allowed us to simplify the hydrodynamics within the Biofilters into a plug-flow reactor wit

This study presents a novel method for investigations on undisturbed samples from full-scale horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (HSSFCW). The planted fixed bed reactor (PFR), developed at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ), is a universal test unit for planted soil filters that reproduces the operational conditions of a constructed wetland (CW) system in laboratory scale. The present research proposes modifications on the PFR original configuration in order to allow its operation in field conditions. A mobile device to obtain undisturbed samples from real-scale

AbstractThe nonlinearity of piezoresistive response is critical in developing strain sensors, various self-monitoring applications and wearable electronics based on filled rubbers. This parameter could change dramatically when scaling up from small-size prototypes to full-scale production. The present work focuses on the nonlinear signals in stretchable rubber-based sensors, their origin and dependence on size of samples. Thus, a set of rectangular, piezoresistive samples differing in width was prepared from natural rubber reinforced with carbon black filler. Their electric resistance was test

Although several types of conjugates have been used for biomarker labeling, the large size of mAbs limits the number of ligands per nanoparticle, impedes their intratumoral distribution, and limits intracellular penetration. Furthermore, the conditions of mAb conjugation using conventional techniques provide nanoprobes with irregular orientation of mAbs on

This paper presents a numerical study on the structure optimization of a full-sized floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) membrane tank. When floating with partially filled liquid, impact pressure on boundaries plays an important role in the sloshing membrane tank. Modification of bottom structure can lead to various pressure distributions on the tank bottom and sidewalls. The optimization is studied by carrying out the numerical simulations and particularly focusing on the structure of sloped-bottom. Abstract:
The effects of hydrodynamic shear stress on the growth rate of cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii microalgae cells were studied in agitated photobioreactors, since they have different motility rates and sizes. An experimental setup was designed and constructed to monitor the growth rate of the micro-organisms versus the shear rate; experiments were carried out in a well controlled environment, under constant atmospheric pressure and 20 °C temperature. Digitally controlled magnetic agitator-photobioreactors were placed inside a closed chamber with air flow for 4 weeks
