Abstract:

Although it is well established that spacing of piles within a pile group influences the lateral load resistance of that group, additional research is needed to better understand trends for large pile groups (greater than three rows) and for groups in sand. A 15-pile group in a 3x5 configuration situated in sand was laterally loaded and data were collected to derive p-multipliers. A single pile separate from the 15-pile group was loaded for comparison. Roughly speaking, a group G is omnipotent if orders of finitely many elements can be controlled independently in some finite quotients of G. We proved that pi1(S) is omnipotent when S is a surface other than P2,T2 or K2 . This generalizes the fact, previously known, that free groups are omnipotent. Integrals of products of unitary matrix elements over the unitary group will be discussed. A group theoretical formula is available to convert them into multiple sums, but unfortunately the latter are often tedious to compute. In this thesis, we develop an alternative method in which these sums are avoided, and group theory is rendered unnecessary. The kinetics of a phase transition has been studied by using a new dynamical Monte Carlo renormalization group method. Using a majority rule block-spin transformation in both space and contiguous times, we numerically renormalized the evolving configurations during the phase separation of a kinetic Ising model with spin-flip dynamics. A green stereoselective total synthesis of cardiobutanolide is proposed, starting from 1,6-dibromohexa-2,4-diene. The synthetic route consists of only 7 steps in total, where each step is performed in aqueous media, and no protecting groups are used. One of the key steps in the synthesis involves a combination of cyanide substitution and intramolecular Pinner reaction in one pot. Studies dealing with reaction process monitoring, tests of catalysts, and condition optimization are reported. A "no purification" process for the sequence of the first four steps of the synthesis is described.

These students attend John Grant High School, in Lachine, Quebec, for continued academic intervention and vocational training. Results indicate most of these young adults make food choices based on a desire for good nutrition.
