Abstract:
Although it is well established that spacing of piles within a pile group influences the lateral load resistance of that group, additional research is needed to better understand trends for large pile groups (greater than three rows) and for groups in sand. A 15-pile group in a 3x5 configuration situated in sand was laterally loaded and data were collected to derive p-multipliers. A single pile separate from the 15-pile group was loaded for comparison. Results were compared to those of a similar test in clays. The load resisted by the single pile was greater than the average load resisted by e

Integrals of products of unitary matrix elements over the unitary group will be discussed. A group theoretical formula is available to convert them into multiple sums, but unfortunately the latter are often tedious to compute. In this thesis, we develop an alternative method in which these sums are avoided, and group theory is rendered unnecessary. Only unitarity and the invariance of the Haar measure are required for the computation. Then, we return to the more traditional group theoretical approach, and compare its strengths and weaknesses with those of our invariant method. As a resu

This strategy is very much in the same spirit as the work of O. V. Belegradek on unitriangular groups. The second method, we call the method of bilinear mappings, is due to Alexei Miasnikov. Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problems related to the assessment of gender-based claims of persecution under the international definition of 'refugee'. The 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees does not list 'gender' as one of the persecution grounds that entitle a person to seek refuge. In attempting to solve this apparent dilemma, the 'membership of a particular social group' category was long considered to be the appropriate assessment framework.
While nowadays the other four enumerated Convention grounds---race, religion, nationality, and political opinion---have

This thesis focuses on transactional process involved in the construction and operation of the Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group. This cooperative wildlife management mechanism gives Yup'ik commercial and subsistence fishermen and other users a direct role, with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, in salmon management.
Transactions involving participants' knowledge and values are described in three processes: (1) the establishment of a management body and its operating rules; (2) the mediation of power in decision-making; and, (3) fishery management which uses both "scienc

Abstract:
In a previous study by our research group, parents and teachers of gifted children disagreed about the importance of group work in the inquiry-based classroom, with parents rating group work as less important than did teachers (Syer & Shore, 2001). The purpose of the present study was to attempt to understand this difference of opinion. Parents (n = 15), teachers (n = 11), and a group who were both parents and teachers (n = 5) of gifted children responded to a researcher-designed telephone interview. Teachers perceived parents as competitive and grade-oriented. Parents themselves, howev

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is an intervention that aims to improve communication and relationships. It is a video-based approach that involves a trained VIG professional filming, editing and reviewing film clips with a client, of their interactions with a significant other person. This thesis explores whether VIG can be used to improve pupils' participation in group work lessons, following a novel application of VIG in natural classroom settings. Study 1 aimed to determine whether there were improvements in video samples of observable classroom behaviour following VIG and to investigate

Let <a1,..., a m | wn> be a presentation of a group G, where w is freely and cyclically reduced and n ≥ 2 is maximal. We define a system of codimension-1 subspaces in the universal cover, and invoke a construction essentially due to Sageev to define an action of G on a CAT(0) cube complex. By proving easily formulated geometric properties of the codimension-1 subspaces we show that when n ≥ 4 the action is proper and cocompact, and that the cube complex is finite dimensional and locally finite. We also prove partial results when n = 2 or n = 3. It is also shown that the subgroups of G generate

Food choices, food purchases and convenience food preparation by a group of mildly intellectually handicapped students are investigated. These students attend John Grant High School, in Lachine, Quebec, for continued academic intervention and vocational training. Results indicate most of these young adults make food choices based on a desire for good nutrition. There is a significant correlation (p $<$ 0.05) between nutrition knowledge and choosing nutritious foods in this sample. Yet the knowledge needed to make sound food choices is insufficient, as is the knowledge of food marketing. Famili

Abstract:
The research for this dissertation focused on how children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) use language in their interactions with peers. The study had three broad objectives: (1) to ascertain patterns of language use by the children with SLI in different contexts, (2) to evaluate the relationship of those patterns to difficulties in peer interaction reported in the literature, and (3) to explore the ramifications of groups composed uniquely of children with SLI for peer talk and peer interaction.
The participants were several children (mean age 4 years, 10 months) enrolled i
