Abstract:
ABSTRACTAn ongoing, structured, low-intensity exercise program designed to foster physical, social and cognitive functioning was evaluated in 128 seniors ranging in age from 55 to 101 years. The sample included individuals residing in the general community, seniors' apartment complexes and institutional care facilities. Participation in other exercises was found to increase since joining the program. The program appeared to be providing an opportunity for social interaction among participants, and the exercises appeared to be mentally stimulating. Implications for program modifications, including building in self-monitoring procedures, are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Engaging pediatric burn survivors in necessary range of motion exercises can be challenging. For younger children, difficulty understanding the reasoning behind prescribed exercises, fear and anxiety can all lead to refusal to participate. Traditional rote range of motion exercises do not engage the child’s sense of curiosity and adventure and seem more like medicine than play. We have developed a range of motion exercise program based on well-known superhero actions. For children who need to address active wrist extension and digit extension, they become “Iron Man” (Example included), “Hulk Smash” lets us work on grip and active composite flexion while becoming “Spiderman” encourages digit isolation. “Superman”, “Wonder Woman” and “Batman” allow utilization of total body movements but can be focus on shoulder flexion or abduction and cross body movements. Methods Traditional superhero movements were assessed to determine similarity to traditional therapy exercises. Exercises were drawn with the extremities performing the desired movements. Pediatric patients are introduced to these exercises and encouraged to act out the superhero movements with therapist directing the desired end range and directionality of movements. Results These characters are well known and loved by pediatric patients. In many instances, a fearful patient may become an active therapy participant through these engaging activities. Goal attainment becomes more fun and less when children are engaged in a purposeful play task. Caregivers can carry these exercises well beyond the therapy session to encourage day long exercise which is essential for contracture prevention and remediation. A recent feedback comment from the parent of a 4-year-old burn survivor specifically focused on these exercises. “Absolutely phenomenal. The therapist did “superhero” moves with my son and got him to open and close his hands. I was so relieved that the movement was normal” Conclusions Modifying instruction methods to include familiar and fun techniques can increase therapy participation and can decrease the fear experienced by young burn survivors when faced with moving an injured extremity.

Abstract:
This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of executing cyber awareness exercises in two different formats: Virtual vs On-site participation. Two EU Agencies, EUSPA and ENISA have organized in the previous years Cyber Awareness exercises; a very important tool to enhance and test the organization's ability to put up resistance and respond to different cyber threats. The objective of this paper is to compare the outcomes of these awareness exercises, executed on-site through physical attendance prior to 2019 and virtually, in a remote setup in 2020, due to the restrictions posed by the pandemic of COVID-19. ENISA in collaboration with EUSPA have accumulated raw and diverse data from the evaluation reports of the cyber events mentioned above. The comparison of these data will focus on the most important success factors of a cyber awareness exercise such as: participation, cooperation (social interaction/teambuilding), effectiveness, fun, tools and identify how the location of the participants affects them. The aim of this work is to highlight through statistical analysis the benefits of a hybrid approach to the exercise’s setup, once combining elements of both virtual and on-site. Depending on the different kind of exercises, such a hybrid setup, will provide more flexibility to an exercise organizer and help maximize effectiveness, while adapting to the fluctuating working regimes of the near future; namely Teleworking. Furthermore, a modular exercise design will be proposed in order to adapt to the location limitations without impacting negatively the rate of the rest of factors analyzed.

Abstract:
This paper presents a modular approach to generic exergame design that combines custom physical exercises in a meaningful and motivating story. This aims to provide a tool that can be individually tailored and adapted to people with different needs, making it applicable to different diseases and states of disease. The game is based on motion capturing and integrates four example exercises that can be configured via our therapeutic web platform “Blexer-med”. To prove the feasibility for a wide range of different users, evaluation tests were performed on 14 patients with various types and degrees of neuromuscular disorders, classified into three groups based on strength and autonomy. The users were free to choose their schedule and frequency. The game scores and three surveys (before, during, and after the intervention) showed similar experiences for all groups, with the most vulnerable having the most fun and satisfaction. The players were motivated by the story and by achieving high scores. The average usage time was 2.5 times per week, 20 min per session. The pure exercise time was about half of the game time. The concept has proven feasible and forms a reasonable basis for further developments. The full 3D exercise needs further fine-tuning to enhance the fun and motivation.

Abstract:
SUMMARYRobotics Agent Coacher for Cerebral Palsy motor Function (RAC CP Fun) is an attempt to implement socially assistive robotics, and a motor learning approach in rehabilitating movement disorders with a central origin. The concept and architecture of RAC CP Fun implements the motor learning theory and behavioral approach, i.e. principles of repetition, stages of learning, appropriate feedback, random practice, and enriched environments. Eleven children with cerebral palsy (CP) and fourteen typically developed (TD) children participated in two procedures while interacting with a robot and performing motor exercises. The interaction level and motor performance of children were measured and compared. Children with CP exhibited a higher interaction level; however, their motor performance was lower than that of TD children. RAC CP Fun was found to be feasible to interact with children of pre-school age, to augment the motivation of the children with CP, and to involve the children in motor exercises.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop an interactive learning tool using computer with a view to enhance preschoolers’ reading ability in English class. This study adopted an action research methodology addressing the call for more authentic materials for preschoolers to sensitise their curiosity by using authentic objects. This study consisted of two phases; in phase 1, a teacher taught preschoolers basic reading skill by introducing letters and words via printed worksheets while in phase 2, the preschoolers learned the same content via computer. Twelve preschoolers (7 girls and 5 boys) and two teaching staff from Smart Reader Kids participated in this study. The results showed that computer-based learning activities created multi-trial opportunities without any negative interference to the preschoolers. This experiential learning that involved trial and error approach enabled preschoolers to learn independently and at the same time engage in fun-filled activities to self-regulate their learning. Classroom observation further indicated that the preschoolers enjoyed participating in the reading activities designed for them. The use of authentic photographs and visuals in the exercises were appealing and encouraged them to engage in meaningful communication with their peers. In addition, preschoolers displayed a high level of confidence during the lesson as the environment was encouraging without much intervention from the class teacher. This ultimately persuaded the preschoolers to give their own responses while creating opportunity for themselves to explore their own learning.

Acreditamos que O Pharol possa ter auxiliado na divulgação destas práticas e entendemos os silêncios a outras práticas como estratégias de um jogo de conformação social.<br>This study sought to identify, through the newspaper O Pharol, the physical exercises and entertainment that were part of the everyday life of population of Juiz de Fora / MG between 1876 and 1915. This period can be regarded as a moment in the history in the city went through an intense process of modernization. So, we present and discuss in the initial chapter of this work, from a review of the literature, concepts and meanings of modernity, a historic period of fast transformation, of intense consumption of goods, belief in progress and science (GIDDENS, 1991). In this context we observed in Brazilian lands, in cities like Rio de Janeiro, the development of physical exercises and diversion, identified as modern symbols. In the second chapter, we realize the popularization of these practices through O Pharol, principal medium of communication at this age. Research at this newspaper showed us that: the theatre please the population, who crowded the shows and applauded the plays a lot. We emphasize the moralizing and educational character of this practice; many parties were held in the city: carnival, dances, fundraisers, bands, among others. The circus seems to have been a major diversion of Juiz de Fora’s population, who was less rigid with moralizing imperatives which took care of that theater. The gym appears especially from 1909; sports like foot races, cycling, fights, bullfights and soccer were also present in the pages of O Pharol, as well as the cinema, that brings to the city new aesthetic sensations. We believe that O Pharol may have aided in the dissemination of these practices and we understand the silences to the other practices as strategies of social conformation game.

Abstract:
The Master Thesis has been carried out in cooperation with Silva Sweden AB and the objective was to develop a new product concept within the product category for everyday exercise. The purpose of the thesis was to use and analyze methods and tools which aid creativity and concept creation in order to make method recommendations for future projects. During the thesis a number of customer needs were identified, which in turn were translated into 20 concepts. On a concept decision meeting a pedometer-based concept was chosen for development. The new pedometer is in addition to counting steps also able to measure and calculate the user’s total climbed height during a day and present this graphically in comparison to famous monuments or distances. The product is to be compatible with Silva’s interactive exercise community on internet, Silva Connect, where users will be able to change the comparison motives and also accept reality-based scenario challenges. The new pedometer is estimated to increase both motivation and the joy of exercise when compared to an ordinary pedometer, and will at the same time have an extended usage-time thanks to the product’s interchangeable motives. Thanks to experiences obtained during the development project a recommended sequel for the creative methods used in the project was made. Some methods are generally better suited for further development of already existing products while other methods results in more innovative ideas for entirely new products. A conclusion was also made that brainstorming should be used as a main method in future projects, but that a moderator leading the brainstorming should steer the participants into using the other methods spontaneous during the session in order to increase the participants’ creativity. This means that the participants’ knowledge in how to use methods will not limit their ability to be creative.<br>Examensarbetet utfördes i samarbete Silva Sweden AB och hade som mål att utveckla ett nytt produktkoncept inom företagets produktkategori för vardagsmotion.

Stevens, Lauren Rene. "Observation and Self-Report of Fun and Social Engagement of Nursing Home Residents During Bingocize®." TopSCHOLAR®, 2019. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/3094.

Full text
Abstract:
Individuals in certified nursing facilities (CNF) often experience social isolation and have limited opportunities to exercise. Bingocize®, an evidence-based healthpromotion program, is a combination of exercise and Bingo and provides opportunities for CNF resident interaction. Limited tools are available to quantify social engagement displayed by nursing home residents. Research suggests that intergenerational programming can positively affect social engagement. The present pilot study focused on the implementation of the Fun and Social Engagement (FUSE) evaluation to measure social engagement displayed by nursing home residents during Bingocize® sessions. The FUSE combined observation and self-report measures to yield a total social engagement score. Social engagement data were collected during Bingocize® sessions with university students interacting with residents and without student presence. Participants (M age = 82) included 35 residents from certified nursing facilities in Kentucky that receive funding from the Civil Money Penalty grant by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The purpose of this study was to determine if participants display increased positive social engagement during Bingocize® sessions when students are present versus when they are not, as well as if there is a difference between the participants’ self-report measure of engagement versus the observational report. Data were collected across four Bingocize® sessions, two with intergenerational programming and two without. Paired t-tests were conducted to determine overall participant engagement scores with and without student presence. Because of absenteeism, only two of the comparisons had a sufficient number of participants to analyze the effect of student presence. Comparing scores of the same residents, FUSE scores were higher in sessions with students present versus when students were not (p < .05). A two-sample t-test revealed that residents who reported happiness had higher observational scores than those who reported they were not happy. The results of this pilot study are tentative due to limited number of participants at some of the sessions. Future studies are needed to determine reliability of the FUSE. Nevertheless, this study suggests that the FUSE is a feasible tool for measuring fun and social engagement during Bingocize® and that university students have a positive effect on resident social engagement.

Abstract:
Exercise-induced hypoxemia [EIAH, arterial PO2 &lt; 90 mmHg and/or alveolar-arterial oxygen partial pressure gradient (A-a DO2) &ge; 25 mmHg] occurs during strenuous exercise in some healthy women. There is conflicting opinion if performing successive bouts of strenuous exercise reduces the severity of EIAH. The aim was to (a) test the hypothesis that the severity of EIAH would be reduced with three successive bouts of strenuous exercise, (b) to determine if repeated bouts of exercise increases hyperventilation thus improving arterial PO2. Seven fit female subjects with EIAH [arterial PO2 or PaO2= 88 +/- 2 mmHg, A-a DO 2 = 25 +/- 3 mmHg and 7 fit female control subjects (PaO2 = 100 +/- 5 mmHg, A-a DO2 = 16 +/- 5 mmHg) performed three bouts of intense exercise on a cycle ergometer at 236 +/- 27 watts [oxygen consumption at end of each set = 48 +/- 6 mL/kg/min, or 96 +/- 5% of maximum] for 5 min each with 10 min of rest between sets. Arterial PO 2 increased [EIAH Delta = +4 +/- 5 mmHg. 95% CI = 0.6 to 7.8; Control Delta = +2 +/- 2 mmHg. 95% CI = 0.4 to 3.6] and arterial PCO 2 or PaCO2 decreased [EIAH Delta = -5 +/- 4 mm Hg, 95% CI = -7.4 to -2.2; Control Delta = -4 +/- 2 mmHg, 95% CI = -5.8 to -2.4] between set 1 and set 3 (P&lt; 0.05). Also, 34% of the variance in the change in PaO2, was explained by the variance in the change of PaCO2 (P &lt; 0.05). In conclusion, repeat exercise improves PaO2, which is related to improved hyperventilation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent of eating disorder symptoms and differences in exercise motivations in female distance runners at various exercise investment levels. One hundred and seven distance runners, aged 19 to 59 years, who run a minimum of five kilometers, three times per week, were asked to complete three questionnaires. The runners across exercise investment levels were not found to differ in Eating Disorder Inventory sub-scale scores. They differed from college women only in exhibiting fewer symptoms on Drive for Thinness (p < .05), Body Dissatisfaction (p < .001), and Interoceptive Awareness (p < .001). Significant differences in the Exercise Orientation Questionnaire sub-scale scores were found between the least and most exercise-invested runners with the latter scoring significantly higher on Exercise Orientation (P < .0001), Identity (p < .004), and Competition (p < .002). It was concluded that while eating disorder symptoms among female distance runners at various investment levels are no different, exercise motivations are different across levels of exercise.

Abstract:
The experiments of this thesis have confirmed and widened much of the previous knowledge concerning recovery from moderate levels of exercise-induced dehydration. A protocol for inducing sweat loss and monitoring recovery has been established and verified, and a reliable methodology for the collection and analysis of whole body sweat developed. In general, intermittent exercise at an intensity corresponding to 60% 2max was undertaken in a warm (approximately 34°C), humid (60-70% rh) environment. Subjects were dehydrated by approximately 2% of their body mass and rehydrated with a fluid volume equivalent to 3% of their body mass. The composition of the rehydration fluid was determined by the aims of each particular study. By systematically varying the sodium concentration of rehydration fluids, the importance of sodium consumption for the retention of the ingested water was confirmed. However, when the sodium intake was extremely high (206 mmol from consumption of a 100 mmol l-1Na+ drink), fluid balance restoration was achieved at the expense of an excess of sodium retention and an increased potassium excretion. This effect on potassium levels must be considered to be undesirable for anything other than the short term situation. Alcohol consumption in the form of beer is the beverage of choice of many individuals following exercise but is frequently advised against because of the diuretic actions of the alcohol. However, this thesis demonstrates that the diuretic effect of alcohol is substantially blunted when alcohol is consumed following a moderate level of hypohydration induced by exercising in the heat; there appears to be no difference in recovery, in terms of fluid balance, from dehydration whether the rehydration beverage is alcohol-free or contains up to 2% alcohol and sufficient volume is consumed.

Taylor, Kathryn L. "Project FFAB (Fun Fast Activity Blasts) : effect of a novel school-based high-intensity interval training intervention on cardiometaolic risk markers and physical activity levels in adolescents." Thesis, Teesside University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/337599.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity may protect against cardiometabolic risk factor clustering, evidence suggests these outcomes are below optimal in English youths. Adolescence is a key stage in health behaviours development, and thus represents an opportunity for interventions aiming to improve the cardiometabolic health, fitness and activity levels of this population. Recently, there has been growing interest in the efficacy of low-volume high-intensity interval training (HIT) as a time efficient way of improving health and fitness outcomes in adults. Contrastingly, the effects of low-volume HIT in adolescents remains relatively unknown. The first aim of this programme therefore was to develop a novel school-based low-volume HIT intervention. The second was to determine the effectiveness of this model for improving the cardiometabolic health, cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity levels of adolescents. Study one examined adolescents’ views towards high-intensity exercise, and the proposed low-volume HIT intervention. This data was used to design the novel low-volume HIT model. In Study 2, participants’ heart rate and perceived exertion responses to three prototype prescriptions of low-volume HIT, based on boxing, dance and football were examined. Here, it was indicated that these activities were capable of eliciting a high-intensity training response (~90% of maximum heart rate). Study 3 incorporated the main intervention, which examined the effect of a 10-week multi-activity low-volume HIT intervention (named Project FFAB [Fun Fast Activity Blasts]) on various health and fitness outcomes in adolescents. Here, beneficial effects were detected in the intervention participants compared to the controls for triglycerides, waist circumference, lipid accumulation product and daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Study 4 assessed the fidelity of the intervention, and found that this had been largely upheld. Collectively therefore, it appears that Project FFAB represents a viable strategy for improving aspects of cardiometabolic health and physical activity levels in adolescents.

Abstract:
The effects of differing recovery patterns following intermittent exercise on blood lactate and subsequent performance were examined. Fourteen male subjects completed three randomly assigned experimental protocols. Each protocol consisted of eight 45s-bouts of cycling on a Monark cycle ergometer at 120% of VO$ sb2$ max interposed with five minute recovery periods. Each protocol ended with a maximal performance task consisting of a 45s all-out cycling test. Recovery patterns included passive, cycling (45% of VO$ sb2$ max), and arm cranking (45% of VO$ sb2$ max). Results revealed similar blood lactate concentrations in the passive and arm cranking conditions but significantly lower (p $<$.05) levels in the cycling condition. Mean power outputs measured from the performance task were significantly higher (p $<$.05) in the cycling and arm cranking recovery conditions. The correlation between blood lactate levels and mean power output was low (r = $-$0.28), suggesting that other factors were influencing subsequent performance.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Capacity Development Programme (CDP) is an agreement between the Government of Mozambique and the Nordic Development Fund, to tackle climate variability by planning and the sustainable operations and maintenance of sanitation and drainage infrastructure. The Mozambican Administration of Water and Sanitation Infrastructure (AIAS) is the agency responsible for this project. The international consortium in charge of developing the CDP provided consultancy services to AIAS and the vulnerable cities of Beira and Matola. The assignment included not only capacity building but also institutional strengthening activities, as well as specific studies, mainly based on climate modelling (dynamic downscaling) and mapping exercises. Important results and conclusions were achieved, and further adaptation strategies to increase the resilience of the Mozambican urban water, sanitation, and drainage sector were proposed.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter analyses the networked agency strategies of three local garment unions in the Bangalore export-garment cluster. Drawing on the heuristic of three interrelated spaces of labour agency constructed by unions—spaces of organising, spaces of collaboration and spaces of contestation—the chapter highlights the various challenges for building sustained union bargaining power vis-à-vis employers. These challenges result on the one hand from the tight labour control regime and on the other hand from unions’ engagement with consumer organisations and donor NGOs from the Global North: When unions rely on financial support from NGOs instead of members’ contributions to fund their operations, and on moral power exercised by consumer organisations instead of associational power exercised by workers, unions risk constructing spaces of organising, collaboration and contestation that provide limited opportunities for workers and organisers to develop strategic capacities. Consequently, unions’ associational and organisational power remains limited. In contrast, when unions strategically use moral power resources from consumers to open up spaces for workplace organising and collective bargaining, this can enable unions to enhance their bargaining position vis-à-vis employers and thereby bring about sustained improvements for workers.

Abstract:
AbstractMarine mammals include toothed and baleen whales, as well as seals, sea lions, sea cows, sea otters and polar bears. They are adapted to an aquatic life in oceanic, coastal and riverine habitats. They range in size from sea otters to blue whales. The extreme diversity of marine mammals is related to their adaptations to different habitats and their use of different feeding strategies. The different kinds of marine mammals are not closely related but evolved from different terrestrial ancestors. Because they have been exposed to similar environmental constraints in their aquatic way of life, many evolutionary convergences can be found in different lineages. They have torpedo-shaped bodies, thick fur or fat layers to preserve heat, as well as impressive diving abilities. Here, we discuss these adaptations in their physiology and anatomy. Through hands-on exercises, students can test how their own muscle strength and heartbeat are affected by cold water.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Volkhovskii’s career from the middle of the 1890s down to the end of the century. The Russian government were intensely nervous about the activities of all Russian exiles abroad, and the Paris branch of the tsarist secret police (Okhrana) played a key role in monitoring developments in Russian émigré communities across Europe. The head of the Paris agentura, Petr Rachkovskii, was particularly exercised by developments in London. While most attention was given to the activities of Stepniak and Vladimir Burtsev, numerous reports were also compiled about Volkhovskii, who was seen as a key figure in efforts to win support in Britain for Russian revolutionaries. Rachkovskii was also concerned about the likely consequences should Stepniak and Volkhovskii prove successful in building great unity between the various elements in the Russian revolutionary movement abroad. Following the death of Stepniak in 1895, Volkhovskii became the formal editor of Free Russia, and continued to play a leading role in the Russian Free Press Fund. He was however generally unsuccessful in his efforts to build closer ties both with Russian liberals and other Russian revolutionaries living abroad. Volkhovskii also for a time found himself at odds with leading members of the Free Press Fund including Nikolai Chaikovskii and Egor Lazarev. He nevertheless took a leading role in organising the defence of Vladimir Burtsev when he was tried in London for publishing a journal that supported regicide as a legitimate tactic in the fight against the tsarist regime.

Abstract:
Temporary disabilities, such as leg and arm fractures, are common injuries among children, requiring physical therapy sessions after the casts are removed. However, children struggle to adhere to these sessions, as they quickly get bored with traditional exercises, and the high cost of therapy sessions can affect the continuity of treatment. Mareen offers a solution to these challenges with an innovative digital game that transforms physical therapy into an interactive experience. The game uses augmented reality, body tracking, and rule-based programming to provide interactive sessions and instant feedback on the child's performance. With today's generation accustomed to using devices, incorporating therapy with fun elements and a points-based reward system where a child completes all the exercises and an egg hatch to reveal a cute animal will effectively motivates children to stay engaged and adds excitement with a sense of achievement to their therapy journey.

Abstract:
Non-pharmacological interventions, like tablet-based cognitive trainings, already present an important alternative treatment of dementia. For tablet-based cognitive trainings to be effective, regular practice seems to be required, highlighting the need for such trainings to be applicable not only in well-prepared laboratory settings, but also for continuous use at home. In order to raise the acceptance as well as the user-friendliness of such trainings to consequently increase training intensity, usability research is essential. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the experiences of people with Alzheimer’s disease (PwAD), relatives, and dementia trainers regarding the usability of a tablet-based dementia training practiced in the home setting.A qualitative study was performed within the ongoing randomized controlled trial of the project multimodAAL. In total 15 individual interviews (each 5 per target group) were conducted with people with mild AD, their relatives and dementia trainers, who were already assigned to the intervention group for at least 6 months, practicing a dementia training program, including physical and cognitive exercises on a tablet-PC at home. The interviews lasted 91.9 minutes on average. A qualitative content analysis was performed to analyze the data.Participants were predominantly female (73.3 %). PwAD and relatives stated that they had no previous experience with this type of computer-based cognitive training and had experienced the training as positive and enriching. Some relatives saw the joint performance as a meaningful activity with their loved ones. Participants confirmed that the different types of physical exercises (e.g., coordination, strength), presented in a video format were well feasible for PwAD. In this regard, some PwAD reported feeling a bit unchallenged. Relatives and dementia trainers recommended for the exercise videos to be more motivating and fun (e.g., direct motivational address by the gymnast in the video like in a tv show, colorful sportswear). Regarding cognitive exercises, participants appreciated the variety (e.g., quiz, puzzle, calculating) as well as the sequence of the different exercises within a training session. Dementia trainers and relatives perceived that exercises related to topics about past/biography (e.g., previous occupation, hobbies) and to religious/seasonal traditions (e.g., Christmas) were particularly appreciated among PwAD. In view of beneficial factors to complete a training session with its physical and cognitive exercises successfully, relatives and dementia trainers underlined that PwAD needed support in terms of (technical) guidance, motivation/feedback/praise, as well as hints/tips/thought-provoking impulses. Dementia trainers and relatives suggested that this could be achieved by a supporting person (e.g., dementia trainer) or an expansion of the program by written and verbal support (e.g., hint button, voice assistant). Furthermore, participants emphasized the need of a tablet pen for comfortable handling, as well as a high sensitivity of the tablet-PC's touch screen. The results show that the already applied tablet-based dementia training is well received and accepted by participants. However, there is still potential for enhancement regarding motivational and feedback strategies as well as user-friendliness by the addition of a comprehensive application for guiding through the physical and cognitive exercises to enable more independent practice sessions.

Abstract:
Ageing is accelerating rapidly worldwide. Rehabilitation services are important to maintain the quality of life of the elderly. Clinical therapists share heavy workloads to deliver professional rehabilitation services to the elderly people. Home-based rehabilitation systems are proposed to provide professional training with more flexibility at a convenient time slot and venue. However, most existing home-based rehabilitation systems only provide game for fun or a video-conference platform to have one-to-one training with a therapist. In this study, we designed a home-based augmented reality (AR) rehabilitation system which integrates more than 45 professional rehabilitation training exercises designed by physical therapists and occupational therapists, combined with real-time AR guidance to provide feedback to users’ motions. The new platform does not require the therapist to be online during the time of training and it provides real-time guidance based on users’ 3D body segment motion. A pilot trial was conducted by recruiting 10 elderly subjects with disability to receive a 20 sessions of rehabilitation training using the AR rehabilitation training system. The AR rehabilitation training system can provide an objective and comprehensive performance report for users after each exercise session, which include the score of the corresponding exercise, the curves and the measurement of the significant biomechanics data. The results showed that the system could effectively improve the joint movement and body balance. A questionnaire survey was conducted among all the subjects after they finished the training, the results showed that they were very satisfied with the AR rehabilitation system. This study demonstrates that a home-based AR rehabilitation system has the potential to be applied in clinical application to support the elderly people to improve their physical dysfunction and maintain their quality of life.

Full text
Abstract:
Phase diagrams may simply be described as alloying maps in material science. However, the required thermodynamic background knowledge is high level and understanding the cooling procedure of metal melts as well as microstructure of metal alloys is challenging. Common teaching material presents results, but not how to get there and leaves frustrated first year engineering students behind. Knowledge on “how to read” phase diagrams is expected from teachers in advanced courses, but requirements are seldomly met by the students. Teaching phase diagrams in “inverted classroom”szenarios is a method to let the students study the science on their own and then take time to discuss their questions and do extended hands on lectures or exercises in class. Implementing the inverted classroom approach has been proven to be successful in terms of learing outcome, problem solving skills related to phase diagrams and in improving grades. Although the time of preparation is raised by a factor of approximately 4 for 2 four-hour classroom sessions, the positive and sustainable learning outcomes make it fun to teach and worth the effort.

Abstract:
Sports technologies have been in continuous and uninterrupted 'change and development' from the day they first started to emerge until today. With each passing year, sports technologies are developing by taking reference from each other through new technologies. With the development of sports technologies, generations, encounter more 'new and advanced' technologies every day. Sports have an important place in protecting the physical and psychological health of individuals. In addition to physical health, mental health also has an important place in sports. In this respect, the aim of the current research is to examine different technology areas in sports in terms of mental health. For this purpose, as a data collection tool; DergiPark, Higher Education Institution National Thesis Center (YÖKTEZ) and Google Scholar were searched for Turkish sources and Web of Science and PubMed databases for English sources with the keywords "Sport Technology", "Sport Mental Health", "Sport Entertainment" and "Technology Addiction". As a result of the research; it is seen that technology in sports is used for different purposes such as 'entertainment, exercise and performance sports'. In some cases, the use of technology in more equipment or time than needed can create technology addiction in individuals and negatively affect their mental health. On the other hand, it is thought that conscious technology users can transform their existing sports/exercises into an efficient and fun way with sports technologies developed for different purposes. In this respect, it was concluded that, as with all new developing technologies, it is important to determine the needs well when using these technologies and to be a conscious user of sports technologies in terms of mental health.

Abstract:
As technological innovation is fused into the rehabilitation process, it gives conventional therapy a new direction with the products of interactive nature and easy to measure techniques. In the recent years, virtual reality based game therapy has turned out to be a promising option for post-stroke patients since it engages patients with fun based exercises during rehabilitation process. It also triggers their neuro-motor functions and accelerates the recovery process. Nevertheless it is necessary to extract some valuable information from the joint movements to measure the recovery condition of patients. Most of the designed games have introduced features to make them interesting as well as challenging for patients, however, only a few measure the joint parameters. We have designed a Kinect based game in Unity3D platform where patients can play game by moving their joints which results in different orthopaedic lessons required for rehabilitation therapy. In contrast to many Kinect based games where only joint movements are considered for playing the game, we have also introduced voice control through speech recognition and feedback provided in terms of audio-visual command to enhance patient’s engagement. Different joint parameters such as trajectory, range of motion, joint velocity, acceleration, reaching time and joint torque are also measured to help quantify the heath condition.

Abstract:
With increasing age of society, the number of seniors living alone is steadily rising. This often leads to a feeling of loneliness or a decline in mental health and physical fitness. Seniors often feel overwhelmed by today's technology and speed of life and do not feel needed anymore partly due to lack of contact to the younger generation. On the other side, young adults – especially from lower social class – often lack positive role models and have problems establishing trustful relationships with adults. Buddy4All addresses these challenges by connecting the younger and older generation via an innovative technology-driven buddy platform. The solution combines classical smartphone-based interactions via the Buddy4All social app and Mixed Reality (MR) experiences via the novel and lightweight Nreal MR glasses. The social app provides multimodal cross-generational communication, experience exchange, and support content. The mixed reality solution connects the younger and older generation via fun cross-generational activities such as location-based games and cognitive exercises. These activities keep both generations mentally stimulated and physically active. The Buddy4All solution fosters the wellbeing and active lifestyle of both generations as well as the cross-generational interaction between these generations and thus, the understanding for each other.

Abstract:
The current paper proposes a new way of experiencing learning, based on the concept of immersive education with the help of an emergent technology: virtual reality. Traditional education is extremely limited in terms of experimentation, and nowadays the evolving technologies aim to solve this shortcoming in order to give students the chance to experience studying in a different manner. At present, the emphasis is usually on teaching the theory basics, while the practical aspects are often ignored and treated superficially, especially in the engineering domain. Implementing immersive education enables both students and teachers to understand any school subject, but also to experience it in real time, thus getting in touch with the most important aspects of that domain. The approach presented in our paper is accomplished through a mobile application called ARVEE, which proposes an interactive, fun and yet educational way of learning astronomy and making students pursue a career in astronomical engineering or in fields related to manufacturing of accessories for astronomical telescopes and instruments. Using virtual reality, students can experience and learn easier the broad concepts of a school subject. The application proposes to combine both traditional and immersive education, the result being the use of virtual reality not only for recreational but also for educational purposes. The application was tested on a group of primary school pupils enrolled in an extracurricular programming club, and the results were extremely satisfying. Besides presenting our app and the way it can support the current educational challenges (e.g. lack of practical exercises), we also analyzed some other existing virtual reality applications that offer similar experiences to the one implemented by ARVEE.

Abstract:
Remote laboratory exercises are gaining popularity due to advances in communication technologies along with the need to provide realistic yet flexible educational tools for tomorrow’s engineers. Laboratory exercises in turbomachinery aerodynamics generally involve substantial equipment in both size and power, so the development of remotely controlled facilities has perhaps not occurred as quickly as in other fields. This paper presents an overview of a new interactive laboratory exercise involving aerodynamics in a linear cascade of stator blades. The laboratory facility consists of a high-speed fan that delivers a maximum of 2.5 kg/s of air to the cascade. Traversing pneumatic probes are used to determine pressure profiles at upstream and downstream locations, and loss coefficients are later computed. Newly added equipment includes cameras, stepper motors, and a data acquisition and control system for remote operation. This paper presents the laboratory facility in more detail and includes discussions related to user interface issues, the development of a virtual laboratory exercise as a complement to experiments, and comparative evaluation of Virtual, Remote and Local laboratory exercises.

Abstract:
This Final Report to Donors presents the findings of the Second Independent Evaluation of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) conducted by the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE) of the Inter-American Development Bank. The first independent evaluation, produced by OVE in 2003 as Donors considered the MIF's request for a replenishment, was prepared to report to Donors on the MIF's performance during its first mandate (MIF I), and to provide lessons learned for the MIF itself. In 2007 Donors approved the replenishment for the MIF (MIF II) and, as part of the replenishment agreement, required that a similar evaluation exercise be conducted at the end of that replenishment. This evaluation, which has the same two objectives as the first, was timed so that the final results are available to inform both MIF Donors and MIF Management about the institution's performance during MIF II.

Abstract:
The Inter-American Development Bank is unique among the multilateral banks in the sense that it has provided concessional funding for its member countries since its inception, with the institution of the Fund for Special Operations (FSO) in the 1959 Agreement that established the Bank. The objective of this evaluation is to provide the Board of Executive Directors, when the Bank is engaging in a new increase of its capital, with an assessment of the performance of the Bank's concessional lending instrument, the FSO loan program during the period of the Eighth Replenishment (IDB-8: 1994-2010). In this sense, it does not discuss the Intermediate Financing Facility (IFF), nor the non-reimbursable technical cooperation financed with FSO resources. This is a timely exercise, for increases in the Bank¿s capital represent critical moments for replenishing the Fund. The concessional nature of the FSO, lower interest rates and longer amortization period, implies that its resources cannot be obtained from the capital markets, but rather have to come (mostly) from the contributions of member countries, and from the income that can be generated from its loans: from investment liquidity and from the interest collected. This evaluation consists of two papers that, given their content and length, are presented separately. This first paper evaluates issues related to FSO allocation, approval and execution. The second document assesses financial and development results.

Abstract:
Aim: This study aimed to explore how qualitative data about rehabilitation for patients with intermittent claudication do provide an enhanced understanding of the quantitative experimental results. Background: The study was a randomized clinical trial comparing a rehabilitation intervention with usual care. A statistically significant difference between rehabilitation and usual care was found in walking distance, physical activity, quality of life and diet. The findings from the quantitative and qualitative analyses were analysed separately on their own tradition. In this study, mixed methods address whether the qualitative results could help explain the quantitative results and bring forward additional information. Design: Complex mixed-method intervention design with a convergent questionnaire variant. Methods: From April 2017- May 2019, patients diagnosed with intermittent claudication were included in a randomized clinical trial (N=118). In addition, qualitative interview informants from the intervention group were sampled from the quantitative study population for a survey (N=43) and focus group interviews (N=10). Interviews were conducted from April 2018-August 2019. Results: Integrated analyses identified how improvement in walking distance, physical activity, diet and quality of life was affected by team spirit, pedometer, education and fun exercise in a local setting. Quantitative and qualitative findings primarily confirmed and expanded each other; however, two discordant results were also evident. Conclusion: Our study adds empirical evidence regarding how a mixed-methods study can be used to obtain a more nuanced understanding of complex healthcare problems. The study provides new knowledge concerning how to set up a rehabilitation programme for patients with intermittent claudication.

Hopkins, Matt, and William Lazonick. Tesla as a Global Competitor: Strategic Control in the EV Transition. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp225.

Abstract:
In this paper, we assess the implications of Elon Musk’s strategic control over Tesla, the pioneering company that has become central to the electric-vehicle transition. We document how, as Tesla’s CEO for 16 years, Musk has exercised strategic control to direct the transformation of the company from an uncertain startup to a global leader. Now that Tesla is profitable corporate predators (aka hedge-fund activists) may challenge Musk’s strategic control—a possibility of which the CEO is well aware. To retain his control over Tesla as a publicly listed company, Musk depends on holding a sufficient proportion of Tesla’s shares outstanding to possess the voting power to fend off predatory value extractors. In addition to accumulating Tesla shares by investing $291.2 million at early stages of the company’s evolution, Musk has relied upon massive stock-option grants from the Tesla board, under the guise of “compensation”, in 2009, 2012, and 2018, to boost his shareholding and, with it, his voting power. Hence the Delaware Court of Chancery’s decision in January 2024 to rescind Musk’s 2018 stock-option package—by far the largest ever granted to a corporate executive—poses a threat to Musk’s strategic control at Tesla. As the “Technoking” of Tesla strategizes to maintain his control over the company’s decision-making, anyone concerned with the role that Tesla will play in the evolving EV transition should be asking how CEO Musk might use, or abuse, his powerful position.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic took place against the backdrop of growing political polarization and distrust in political institutions in many countries. Did deficiencies in government performance further erode trust in public institutions? Did citizens’ ideology interfere with the way they processed information on government performance? To investigate these two questions, we conducted a pre-registered online experiment in Spain in November 2020. Respondents in the treatment group were provided information on the number of contact tracers in their region, a key policy variable under the control of regional governments. We find that individuals greatly over-estimate the number of contact tracers in their region. When we provide the actual number of contact tracers, we find a decline in trust in governments, a reduction in willingness to fund public institutions and a decrease in COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. We also find that individuals endogenously change their attribution of responsibilities when receiving the treatment. In regions where the regional and central governments are controlled by different parties, sympathizers of the regional incumbent react to the negative news on performance by attributing greater responsibility for it to the central government. We call this the blame shifting effect. In those regions, the negative information does not translate into lower voting intentions for the regional incumbent government. These results suggest that the exercise of political accountability may be particularly difficult in settings with high political polarization and areas of responsibility that are not clearly delineated.
