Abstract:
This article examines some of the functions of music in human society, and argues for a restructuring of the current taxonomies, as driven by Martindale's psychobiological theory of aesthetic preference. The realignment proposed places the desire for pleasure generation at the highest point of a hierarchy of functions, the so called fundamental function, with other functions considered to be subsidiary. With this view, music can be defined as an auditory stimulus whose fundamental function is to produce pleasure in the listener (who may, of course, also be the performer). I refine this thesis

Abstract Arnold Schoenberg’s concept of formal function, as formulated by Erwin Ratz, has become a staple of music theory since it was reimagined and systematized by William E. Caplin. However, this concept has been criticized for not speaking to the content of a piece of music, its particularity and meaning. By defining formal components, parts, and functions in line with the conceptual metaphors that underlie musical form, one may establish the inseparability of form and content. The definitions proposed here apply to art music from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, the latter

New imaging techniques studying higher cognitive functions in the human brain 'in vivo' and theoretical advancements in music and brain function have facilitated this development. There are shared cognitive and perceptual mechanisms and shared neural systems between musical cognition and parallel nonmusical cognitive functions that provide access for music to affect general nonmusical functions, such as memory, attention, and executive function. Traditional music in education is analysed with reference to its place in Greek society, taking into account the following trends of the 20th century: modernisation, urbanisation and globalisation. Data on standardized tests is often used to advocate for the inclusion of music programs in secondary education curriculum. There have been studies that claim to identify a relationship between music participation and higher earned test scores; however, correlation does not necessarily equate to causation. The argument between whether music instruction improves student testing ability or if higher achieving students are attracted to music courses is still prevalent within the music education domain. Why does the Western world predominantly adopt spatial terms such as “high” and “low” to distinguish musical notes while other non-Western cultures use non-spatial terms such as “large” and “small” (Bali), or “clear” and “dull” (South Korea)? Have the changing concepts of motion and space in people’s everyday lives over history also changed our understanding of musical space?
