Abstract:
The introduction of folk music in Greek state education during the late 1980s reflects the interest modern Greek society has for traditional arts, and creates new research areas for music education. This thesis examines the use and function of Greek traditional music in the Music Schools of Greece. Traditional music in education is analysed with reference to its place in Greek society, taking into account the following trends of the 20th century: modernisation, urbanisation and globalisation. The project examines the ways traditional music is taught, its effect on music education, and the view

Data on standardized tests is often used to advocate for the inclusion of music programs in secondary education curriculum. There have been studies that claim to identify a relationship between music participation and higher earned test scores; however, correlation does not necessarily equate to causation. The argument between whether music instruction improves student testing ability or if higher achieving students are attracted to music courses is still prevalent within the music education domain. This thesis will explore the function of the conductor’s left hand, with emphasis on its expressive possibilities and the gestures. In the first chapter, the role of the conductor is discussed, and some problems around the field of expressive gestures are brought up. In this chapter, I also include some paragraphs about gesture and its role and function outside of musical leadership, such as public spea

How have we come to hear melody as going “up” or “down”? Why does the Western world predominantly adopt spatial terms such as “high” and “low” to distinguish musical notes while other non-Western cultures use non-spatial terms such as “large” and “small” (Bali), or “clear” and “dull” (South Korea)? Have the changing concepts of motion and space in people’s everyday lives over history also changed our understanding of musical space?
