Abstract:
Plantinga’s Argument from the Confluence of Proper Function and Reliability purports to find support for theism in the claim that most of the human mind’s cognitive powers are reliable when functioning properly in the right environments. This chapter evaluates this argument and concludes that its prospects are mixed. On one hand, it does not show that such a claim provides significant support for theism over non-theistic evolutionism. However, the argument does highlight a non-trivial problem for naturalists, namely, providing a naturalistically acceptable psychosemantics. The chapter’s first

Abstract:
Proper names and predicates are different kinds of expressions, with different semantic functions. Names refer and predicates attribute properties or classify things into kinds. To some of us that is almost a platitude. Nevertheless, some philosophers contend that the difference is just apparent, and they have endorsed predicativist views advocating that names are really predicates and should be treated as such. The purpose of this paper is to argue against predicativism. However, the chapter will not engage the specific arguments offered by proponents of the view. Rather, it will argue that t

Hale has articulated and defended a thesis that properties are tied to predicates in possible languages. The same goes for functions. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a property or function is that it is expressed by a predicate in a possible language that can be understood by finite beings, like us humans. The purpose of this chapter is to assess this view and determine how it fares against the output of standard mathematics. In order to interpret mathematics, Hale must defend some prima facie implausible claims about what sorts of languages are possible, for us finit

Abstract:
In English, Italian, French, and Spanish (to name only a few languages), people’s names tend to suggest the referent’s gender. Thus “Paul,” “Paolo,” “Pierre,” and “Jesús” strongly suggest that their referent is male, while “Ortensia,” “Mary,” “Paola,” “Pauline,” and “Lizbeth” suggest that the referent is a female. To borrow the terminology introduced by Putnam, we can characterize the additional information conveyed by a name as stereotypical information. It doesn’t affect someone’s linguistic and semantic competence: one is not linguistically incompetent if one doesn’t know that “Sue” is used

Many other forms of intellectual property beyond the big three—copyright, patent, and trademark—reflect particular national agendas and political power structures. Some of them exist only in particular countries. Others protect narrow interests. “Other rights” describes some of these rights: domain names, geographic marks, personality rights, trade secrets, and misappropriation and data protection. The rise of these sui generis regimes and the proposals to create a new right for fashion design in recent years reveal the extent to which intellectual property is a function more of politics and t
