Abstract Commercially available polymers were analyzed and grouped into six classes, based on their functional groups. Important representatives from each class were compared in three cooling water programs and a boiler program. Polymer performance in cooling water paralleled boiler water performance within each functional class. Abstract Polyaspartic acid, a polymeric form of aspartic acid has been examined as a corrosion inhibitor for steel as a function of pH, temperature, and hydrodynamic conditions. The temperature ranged from 25°C to 95°C and the concentration ranged from less than 1 % to about 10 % by weight. Experimental procedures included electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the rotating cylinder electrode, and coupon immersion. We present a unified technological explanation of both the movement of workers across jobs using different skills and the changes in skill use within jobs.
