It brings earlier functional-typological work on CCs to bear on language-particular constructionist analyses of CCs, using the notions of ‘family (of constructions)’ and ‘prototype’ as the bridge. After suggesting how these notions can be applied to CCs under a functional-typological approach, the structure of the CC sub-constructicon in German is discussed, and directions for future research are offered to round the squib off.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract As a critical element in urban sustainability efforts, green roofs (GRs) can reduce building energy use and enhance ecological performance via additional growing medium and plant layers. However, the extra building components result in increased load and structural thickness as well as construction complexity. This paper proposes a design-fabrication method for a thin-vaulted green roof prototype with a compressive-only surface and upstand ribs along unevenly distributed stress lines for a lightweight and material-efficient structure. The structural efficiency of the proposed roof has been proven high compared to conventional flat roof through simulation. To realize such a non-standard and multifunctional structure, a hybrid formwork system is presented to deal with geometric complexity and functional integration by treating stay-in-place formwork as a function part. In particular, 3D clay printing (3DCP) is selected as eco-friendly formwork staying in the GRs to integrate with plant growth substrate, leading to a more simplified and sustainable fabrication. An empirical construction experiment is conducted to validate the proposed method on a 1:5 scale.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper considers narratives as dynamic memory banks and shifts understanding from emphasizing the origins of the present to the emergence of the present. In the construction of reality, imagined futures articulate with knowledge obtained in the past.In another inversion, rather than explain change and consider stability as the norm, it focuses on change as the norm and investigates the creation of stability to explain, for example, why our societies are so slow in acting on climate change. The creation of meaning is the result of an interaction between thinking and experience, like the interaction between a map and the territory it represents. It reduces the complexity of the territory to the simplicity of the map, shaping simultaneously the cognitive map and the territory it represents. Such cognitive structures evolve into dense networks of cognitive dimensions.Tipping points emerge as a particular cognitive structure is no longer enabling a society to deal with its changing environment because it does not fully trace the logical and functional nature of the relationship between the two. To facilitate that, we need to understanding noise as signals for which no interpretative conceptual and cognitive structure has yet been identified.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, the emerging 3D printing concrete technology has been proved to be an effective and intelligent strategy compared with conventional casting concrete construction. Due to the principle of additive manufacturing strategy, this concrete extrusion technique creates great opportunities for designing freeform geometries for surface decoration since this material has a promising performance of high compressive strength, low deformation, and excellent durability. However, the structure behavior is usually questioned, defined by the thickness and printing path. At the same time, the experiments for using 3D printing elements for structural and functional parts are still insufficient. Little investigation has been made into developing reinforcement strategies compatible with 3D printing concrete. In fact, conventional formwork and easy-to-install reinforcement support structures have various advantages in terms of labor costs but can hardly be reused. Thus, using 3D concrete printing as formwork for projects in different scales is an effective solution in the mass customized prefabrication era. Considering large-scale projects, the demand to provide concrete formwork with a proper reinforcement strategy for better toughness, flexibility, and strength is necessary. In this paper, we proposed different off-site reinforced 3D printing concrete strategies and evaluated them from time and material cost, deviation, and accessibility of fabrication.

Abstract:
This study provides a construction grammar account in line with Lakoff (1987) and Goldberg (2006) of two types of deictic-presentative constructions in Spanish, [he aquí NP] and [aquí está NP]. Following up on Lakoff’s (1987, pp. 462–585) seminal analysis of English there-constructions and drawing on the findings of Bergen & Plauché (e.g. 2005) on French voilà-constructions, it will be shown how the formal properties of both structures are not only linked to the same function but also motivated by it. This synchronic constructional analysis is meant to lay the groundwork for a subsequent diachronic account of the historical origins of these constructions, that is, their constructionalization from Indo-European and Semitic deictic particles (he aquí NP) and from presentational adverb-verb-subject constructions (aquí está NP). It will be argued that the substitution of he aquí-constructions by aquí está-constructions can be described in terms of syntactic regularization. Depending on the matter in question, this study relies on both qualitative and quantitative analyses of corpus data.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractIn a cooperative robotic fabrication (CRF) framework, multiple industrial robots are specifically sequenced to work together, thus allowing them to execute coordinated processes with greater geometric and structural variation. In the context of the construction industry, agents in a cooperative setup can perform complementary functions such as placing or removing building components while simultaneously providing temporary support to a structure. This approach can reduce, or completely remove, the need for temporary external supports and scaffolding that would typically be required for stability during the construction of geometrically complex spanning spatial structures. For a circular economy, this means overall reductions to primary resource inputs and improvements to the disassembly, reuse, and reassembly potential of a structure at the end of its life. This chapter gives a summary of three projects that successfully demonstrate the use of cooperative robotic fabrication to promote several principles of a circular economy through different scaffold-free construction applications. The topics covered in this chapter will be of interest to researchers and professionals interested in the emergent intersection of digital fabrication, robotics, and sustainability applied to the building industry.

Abstract. Density functional theory has been used to study the structural and electronic properties of AlAs using generalized gradient approximation implemented through the WIEN2k code by the local density (LDA), generalized gradient approximations (GGAPBE), and generalized gradient approximation is given by Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGAPBE Sol) methods .The AlAs's cubic structure is mechanically stable in the Fd-3m space group and exhibits semi-conducteur behavior with a 2.259 eV indirect energy band gap (EG) along the Г-Χ. Functional metamaterials are gradually becoming the frontier of scientific research and industrial applications. Among them, reconfigurable mechanical metamaterial with inbuilt motion capability could result in unusual physical properties such as shape tunability and programmable density and stiffness. Inspired by the transformable cuboid structure that was first investigated by Ron Resch, we proposed a tilted cuboid structure that can fold into a 3D configuration. By designing the individual building units, face angles and tessellation pattern, we are able to construct a series of reconfigura

These dielectric functions provide for different types of analyses concerning the dielectric response of explosives. In particular, these dielectric response functions provide quantitative initial estimates of spectral response features for subsequent adjustment with respect to additional information such as labor

Over the past twenty-five years, genetic methods have generated a wealth of information on the regulation and the structure-function relationship of bacterial genes. These methods are based on the introduction of random mutations in a gene to alter its function. Subsequently, genetic techniques cure applied to localize the mutation, while the nature of the impairedfunction could be determined using biochemical methods. Classic examples of this approach is now considered to be the elucidation of the structure and function of genes, constituting the Escherichia coli lactose (lac) and tryptophan (

The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been employed for pavement design by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) since 2009 and has generated efficient pavement designs with a lower cost. It has been demonstrated that the success of MEPDG implementation depends largely on a high level of accuracy associated with the information supplied as design inputs. Vehicular traffic loading is one of the key factors that may cause not only pavement structural failures, such as fatigue cracking and rutting, but also functional surface distresses, including friction and smo

Previous research, both quantitative and qualitative, has shown surprisingly low levels of labour market segmentation among the employed.
