Abstract:
Carlo Lodoli (1690--1761), architect, storyteller, and generally caustic individual, was a friar at San Francesco della Vigna in Venice, where he offered non-professional lessons in architecture. In his garden, he had collected a series of architectural fragments for use in his dialogues with students. He would use the fragments as examples of good and bad architecture to allow for his peripatetic teachings. These lessons, described by his faithful student Andrea Memmo as talking in images were sweeping, often ethical. As the Socratic Lodoli did not commit to text any formal treatise, we must look to his student's interpretations and various built projects. It is within these traces we begin to discover Lodoli's proposal for a non-reductive functional architecture based upon the imagination. By looking into this performing aspect of function we may begin to realize an architecture that both invites and constitutes essential meaning.

Yzurdiaga, Katherine P. "Reconsidering Firmitas: Durability as an Integral Function of the Sustainably Built Environment." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/111.

Full text
Abstract:
Architecture is an inherently functional art – buildings have functions, some more vital than others, beyond the objective of sheer aesthetic appeal. Yet at the same time, aesthetic appeal is an integral part of the human experience that many agree is vital to sustainability objectives, including those of the built environment. Ideally, a building would be able to embody and honor both principles, both form and function, but some contend that in the current architectural climate, the emphasis on beauty has surpassed the importance placed on functionality. This discussion is particularly relevant to sustainability in the built environment: Sustainability as a function, some argue, is often compromised or sacrificed for the sake of the vision of the architect, and faddish concepts of beauty. This, many contend, results in the commodification of our buildings, and quite possibly of sustainability as well. In this thesis, I argue that we can avoid this outcome by employing site-specific and culturally informed design principles, knowledge of sensory perception shaped by the social sciences, and spatially flexible design principles to create architecture that inspires us, roots us, and lasts for multiple generations. Ultimately, this is the core function of a sustainable approach to design – taking into account the entire lifecycle of a product. A new, loose functionalist approach that stresses durability, and is informed by a multidisciplinary approach involving both the humanities and social sciences, could be the key to overcoming the quick obsolescence of styles in a consumptive, aesthetically driven society.

Sherwood, Stuart. "Drawing the Analogy: Nature as Idea, Architecture as Response." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35819.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to establish a first design philosophy by proposing nature and architecture as mutually interactive conceits within the scope of the design process. Positing that our conceptions of "green" design are rightfully influenced by the various and often highly metaphorical social constructions of nature that precede them, an architecural exercise is then explored as a similarly constructed response. After assembling a definition of nature based in part on the climate, terrain and traditional building practices of rural western North Carolina, a house is then posed for its site on the border of the Pisgah National Forest.

Ozten, Ulku. "New Monumentality." Master's thesis, METU, 2005. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12606932/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
&ldquo
New monumentality&rdquo
is a term which was first introduced to architectural discourse by Sigfried Giedion, Jose Luis Sert, and Fernand Lé
ger right after the post-World War II in the early forties. The effect of the term comes from the polemical power of reformulation of the accustomed category &ldquo
monument&rdquo
within the field of the modern architecture. In this way, as it is shaped by the three authors, for the first time &ldquo
New Monumentality&rdquo
had been identified as a modern task under the name of Nine Points on Monumentality in 1943. Therefore, this thesis is mainly grounded on this significant text that is a primary manifestation of the need for the new monumentality. On these bases, that the manifesto is stressed an effort to determine the ethics of the post war modern architecture regarding: historicism, functionalism, and representation. This thesis seeks to clarify the self-critical frame which is unfolded by the manifesto within the context of the modern architecture. Thus, the first one of the three objectives of this thesis is to clarify the concept of new monumentality
the second one is to locate its position in the history of modern architecture
and the third one is to differentiate proposed and unintended outcomes of this movement within the contemporary discourses of architecture.

Ellis, Eugenia Victoria. "SQUARING THE CIRCLE: The Regulating Lines of Claude Bragdon's Theosophic Architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26491.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, squaring the circle has been about bringing the incommensurable work of the gods within the realm of the commensurate by using infinite cosmic principles to regulate the finite world. The American architect Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) squared the circle using his Theosophic architectural theory that was based on a neo-Pythagorean emphasis on Number, which he believed to have contained the secret of the universe. America at the turn of the 20th century was interested in Eastern spirituality at the beginning of an age of scientific relativity when the world and universe were being questioned due to new scientific discoveries based on higher-dimensional mathematical speculations that challenged relationships between humankind and the cosmos. Paralleling this scientific search was the Western conquest of the world on earth, which brought back speculations about the Near and Far East, including translations of their ancient scriptures and encyclopedias of their architecture. The fourth dimension was an imaginary mathematical (re)creation of great interest to Bragdon and common to scientific relativity and Eastern spirituality; two cultural constructs that altered the perception of time and space to affect the American imagination and architectural production. Within this context, Squaring the Circle investigates the relationship of theory to practice by considering Bragdonâ s architecture as the material manifestation of his Theosophic architectural theory.

Nobbs, Garrett Brandon. "The St. Johns Bridge: a prayer in steel." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/865.

Full text
Abstract:
The St. Johns Bridge is a 1,207 foot span suspension bridge crossing the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, connecting the Portland communities of St. Johns and Linnton on the eastern and western banks, respectively. Commissioned in 1928, the bridge was completed in 1931, with much fanfare in the local community. The two neighborhoods are some distance from downtown Portland, and the bridge brought prestige to an otherwise nondescript locale. It was designed by the New York-based firm of Steinman & Robinson. David Barnard Steinman (1886-1960) acted as the public face for the firm, however, and the design of the bridge has traditionally been ascribed to him in the literature. Steinman was one of the most prominent bridge engineers of the twentieth century, and is recognized today, as he was even within his lifetime, as such. It was a position which he worked fervently to attain. Steinman wrote extensively concerning the St. Johns Bridge and spoke of it as his own; his extensive use of the St. Johns Bridge as an example of aesthetics in bridge engineering is related to the early twentieth-century debate between engineers and architects regarding the role of each in bridge design. As an engineer who sought, without the aid of the architect, to build bridges which were objects of beauty, he asserted the role of the engineer as artist. The predisposition toward the engineered machine aesthetic in the intellectual climate of the avant-garde in the early twentieth century enabled Steinman to style himself as such an artist--even though the St. Johns Bridge, which he frequently employed in this regard, was not a work of functionalist aesthetics. While the architectural avant-garde was borrowing from the engineer for artistic rejuvenation, Steinman was in an advantageous position to argue for the engineer-artist, thereby casting the engineer as an individual sui generis, equal to and without need of the architect.

Abstract:
The period between the two Worlds Wars is marked by the genesis and the rise of a new architecture dedicated, to broadcasting. As being not able to be implanted in the existing and disseminated buildings, the radio was compelled to be endowed with an edifice specifically adapted to the radiophonic techniques and practices, that centralize the production in a single site. This world historical study of the dedicated architectural creation in broadcasting, from 1929 to 1963, analyzes the pioneering architectural works in Berlin and Brussels. In view of the diversity of architectural responses brought to the requirements of radiophonic creation, it is a question of both accurately questioning the genesis of this new architecture and the place of the work of Henry Bernard in the context of post-WW2 France

Abstract:
The main focus of this work is the relationship between person and object. My initial hypothesis was that people are “creators of meaning”. It is one of our basic cognitive functions. We all need an understandable motivation to comprehend, consider and experience the everyday-life environment around us. We have all experienced a special connection with items that we own. This is also true for the subject of my analysis: luminaries. Light is the main protagonist of our life. Besides the obvious role in making us see the world around us, it has a major impact on modifying our feelings. Following deep literature research, I proposed to a selected group of volunteers a questionnaire to answer a concise but complex question: why we consider a special object that we care about. Despite this topic has been broadly analyzed in the field, it is my opinion that there is a lack of understanding about the influence that objects have on attachment bonds.  The purpose of my analysis was to understand what would make a person holding on to a lamp for all of his/her life and maybe giving it as an heirloom further on in the family. A variety of aspects related to the concept of bonding to a specific object have been identified: time, value to the person, love and care, irreplaceability, person-object interactions, an extension of self-identity, and emotions. In general, as a conclusion from my survey, I have identified three main aspects important for the person-luminaire bond:- the features of the person itself - the characteristic of a lamp in its duality - the relation bond between the two In general, people are focusing more broadly on the effect and the atmosphere created by the luminaire in the house and I can conclude that the connection is created through an important association between the psychological momentum and the home environment where they are immersed into. I finally proposed a guideline applicable to future design projects and to define the most important characteristics that an object should have to bond with a person for life.In future perspectives, an obvious implication would be to rethink our approach to design and drive professionals towards customer-oriented needs and expectations to extend the life cycle of products.

Full text
Abstract:
Is it still possible to inhabitate and live the laid out and constructed space in particular, as for considering the techno and industrial flood that determines and influences the field of modern architecture? Rationalism and functionalism of a given trend of modern architecture by incorporating techno and industrial progress in the world of home, seems to condemn the experience of living in an irreversible crisis. The architectural activity wanting to meet scientific and techno-industrial progress, it requires practical experience in home and prescientific places of life, of living standards arising from the only reason. It is a general an architecture and a modern, abstract and functionalist urbanism that develop along the path of rational objectivity initiated by Galileo and Descartes, they control , manage and aestheticize the whole world and all human experience to space by stripping poetic , mythological and emotional considerations. Thus, the construction of human institutions housing becomes in identifying the crisis of living a «prosaic and technological process deriving directly from the mathematical reason, a functional diagram, or a rule of formal suits «in drawback of the concrete experience of living. But if the architecture does not matter to itself, if it is not a practice that is an end in itself because it opens to another, how can we still philosophically hope to authentically, originally and poetically live the world and the space of the house in particular? Philosophy, by phenomenological and hermeneutic approach inheritated from Gaston Bachelard and Merleau-Ponty presents to the modern experience of living, original significant ways that respond to the crisis it faces. Renewing differently more than the only purely rational knowledge the relations of man to the space, it presents itself as a remarkable way of re- understanding, rereading and re-enchantment of the original experience of inhabitating the world , the city and the space of the house

Abstract:
The topic is focused on a main period of the history of art and French post-war design but which is though largely unknown. During this period of growth also called « Trente Glorieuses », a line of eleven young French designers impose their self in the landscape of the model’s creation. This generation tries hard to promote the design from the end of the Second World War by basing on the social functionalism’s doctrine which is defended before by Francis Jourdain, father of the French serial furniture and member of the UAM, and then by his disciples René Gabriel and Marcel Gascoin. Their communal training in the best schools or in the design offices of their eldests, the similarity of their careers and the existence of personal affinities may allow us to claim the possibility of a generational phenomenon never identified in itself yet. Together or separately, this designers desire to defend the French rationalism and a production without any artifice, but above all the collaboration of the creator and the manufacturer for relevant forms and the proclamation of the beauty in the utility. Moreover, it is with them that appears the designer status who has to conceive furniture and interior organisations of quality and which is functional and reachable for everyone. This pioneer generation, relegated at the middle ground of the design history, deserves to have their place in the genesis of a profession and a discipline from which we still learn lessons

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the rational design and controlled self-assembly of supramolecular architectures for application in areas such as molecular recognition. The research focuses on the cyclotriveratrylene family of molecular hosts, where their incorporation into both polyhedral and polymeric assemblies bestows hosting ability to the complexes isolated. A novel pyridine-N-oxide ligand library has been prepared and the first examples of formal coordination polymers of the lanthanide(III) cations are subsequently reported. Their self assembly was extended to the transition metals and a variety of coordination complexes were isolated that feature uncommon network topologies and structurally aesthetic motifs, such as large internal pore spaces. The combined effects of ligand solubility and rigidity were investigated and used to rationalise the selective isolation of a homochiral, triply-interlocked [2]-catenane over simple capsular assemblies. This was further exemplified in the isolation of a metastable cage complex which underwent a symmetry-induced inter-cage transformation to afford a much larger, polyhedral complex. The solution-phase chemistry of these cages was further investigated and a sophisticated assembly/disassembly cycle was determined. A stable family of cage complexes has been prepared using classical organometallic chemistry and self-assembly processes. Such cages were highly stable and their formation was observed to be cooperative. The solid state host-guest chemistry of these species was investigated, where they were observed to uptake various guests, including gaseous iodine, in a single-crystal to single-crystal manner.

This paper uses statistical regression techniques, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), to develop models to explain the relationship between physical characteristics and performance of industrial properties. The physical characteristics studied in this paper include building size, building age, building type, and tenant type. Rent and occupancy rates are used as a proxy for performance. The results show that building size, building age, building type and tenant type are significant variables in the explanation of industrial property performance and volatility of annual growth of performance, but these variables are not found to exert a significant influence on the long-term trend of performance. The results also indicate that the decrease in size of industrial properties increase their performance ( or the relationship is negative) but decrease their volatility of annual growth of performance ( or the relationship is positive); medium-age industrial properties outperform newer and older ones in both performance and volatility of annual growth of performance; R&D industrial properties have the best performance and also the highest volatility of annual growth of performance among the three building types: manufacturing, warehouse, and R&D; single tenant industrial properties have better performance and higher volatility of annual growth of performance than multitenant ones.

Abstract:
In line with the growth of software, code bases are getting bigger and more complex. As a result of this, the architectural patterns, which systems rely upon, are becoming increasingly important. Recently, decomposed architectural styles have become a popular choice. This thesis explores system behavior with respect to decomposing system granularity and external communication between the resulting decomposed services. An e-commerce scenario was modeled and implemented at different granularity levels to measure the response time. In establishing the communication, both REST with HTTP and JSON and the gRPC framework were utilized. The results showed that decomposition has impact on run-time behaviour and external communication. The highest granularity level implemented with gRPC for communication establishment adds 10ms. In the context of how the web behaves today, it can be interpreted as feasible but there is no discussion yet on whether it is theoretically desirable.

Abstract:
Multi-core computing is becoming ubiquitous due to the scaling limitations of single-core computing. It is inevitable that parallel programming will become the mainstream for such processors. In this paradigm shift, the concept of abstraction should not be compromised. A programming model serves as an abstraction of how programs are executed. Transactional Memory (TM) is a technique proposed to maintain lock free synchronization. Due to the simplicity of the abstraction provided by it, TM can also be used as a way of distributing parallel work, maintaining coherence and consistency. Motivated by this, at a higher level, the thesis makes three contributions and all are centred around Hardware Transactional Memory (HTM).As the first contribution, a transaction-only architecture is coupled with a ``data centric" approach, to address the scalability issues of the former whilst maintaining its simplicity. This is achieved by grouping together memory locations having similar access patterns and maintaining coherence and consistency according to the group each memory location belongs to. As the second contribution a novel technique is proposed to reduce the number of false transaction aborts which occur in a signature based HTM. The idea is to adaptively switch between cache lines and signatures to detect conflicts. That is, when a transaction fits in the L1 cache, cache line information is used to detect conflicts and signatures are used otherwise. As the third contribution, the thesis makes a case for having an exit functionality in an HTM. The objective of the proposed functionality, TM_EXIT, is to terminate a transaction without restarting or committing.

Abstract:
The Rotman lens is a beam former which is attractive due to its wide bandwidth, wide angular cove rage, planar nature and simple fabrication. Its angular resolution is limited because only a discrete number of steering angles (equal to the number of input ports) can be achieved. This limitation is overcome using a new type of RetroDlrective Array {RDAJ based on the a Rotman lens, and a Rotman lens used in conjunction with liquid crystal (LC) phase shifters to provide reconfigurable radiation patterns. Parametric studies into the geometry of the lens were first carried out to develop design guidelines. A new type of RDA based on the Rotman lens was designed which requires additional features not normally considered in conventional operation of the lens. A prototype Rotman lens based RDA was fabricated and experimental measurements of the monostatic and bistatic radar cross-section patterns were used to demonstrate continuous angular coverage of ±40° in azimuth over an 8 -12 GHz f requency range. A new low loss GT3-24002 liquid Crystal (l C) developed by Merck was used to fabricate inverted microstrip line based LC phase shifters, with figures of merit of up to 110• phase shift per dB of loss were measured over a 6 -10 GHz frequency band. These devices were integrated into the array feed circuitry of a Rotman lens to implement a reconfigurable beamforming network which exhibits significantly higher angular resolution than conventional Rotman architectures. Beams centred at 0•, ±l5• and ±30°, were switched between monopulse sum and difference pattern operation over 6 - 10 GHz by applying suitable voltages to the LC lines to provide phase shifts of O• and 180•, and in addition, the dynamic phase responses at the outputs of the LC lines were varied to continuously scan the radiation patterns over an angular range of ±39°.

Abstract:
This thesis study aims to examine the conceptual and theoretical differences of Functional Size Measurement (FSM) methods, to identify the improvement opportunities of these methods and to develop a new FSM method. A comprehensive literature review is performed and two multiple-case studies are conducted as a research strategy. In the light of the results obtained, some improvement suggestions on two of the most challenging improvement opportunities identified for FSM methods are made &ndash
improvement opportunities which are related to the conceptual and theoretical basis of FSM and the extension of the applicability of these methods to different software functional domain types. The work behind these suggestions involves the critical examination of the concepts &ldquo
functionality&rdquo
and &ldquo
functional size&rdquo
and the depiction of &ldquo
types of functionality&rdquo
considering the components of software architecture and the forms of information processing logic performed in different software functional domain types. Based on the suggestions made, a new FSM method, called ARCHItectural DIMensions Based FSM (ARCHI-DIM) is developed conforming to the ISO/IEC 14143-1 standard. A third multiple-case study is conducted in order to evaluate the new method and to identify future directions for FSM methods.

Abstract:

Problem

Abstract:
The study investigates how museum and gallery buildings can be designed to give functional longevity and appeal. It considers this in terms of their design and relation to their surroundings and use in the context of changing social, cultural, political and economic factors. Post World War II the typological design and layout of these buildings was challenged; partly as a result of the influence of modernism and also as new modes of art production challenged the spaces and display modes. Financial instability and class perception have always been problematic and increased public expectations add to issues that need addressing. The study investigates how these factors have impacted on these buildings and if this has influenced their design and use. It considers the regional context of the West Midlands and also draws comparisons to other areas in England to investigate ways of addressing contemporary issues to achieve longevity of use. The study considers the historical influence of the typological developments. Examples from the West Midlands and investigation of the area’s historical background are used to identify if regional idiosyncrasies exist and if these influence a building’s longevity. This establishes their contemporary context and objectively reviews the resulting implications of appearance and function in relation to the social, cultural and economic issues that may be dominant within this region. A qualitative interview methodology and analysis is used to examine the views of a multidisciplinary group of museum and gallery users, capturing a snapshot in time of their views on the appearance, understanding and use of these buildings. This information is analysed and discussed in conjunction with the findings of the relevant literature. The comparison of the information researched raises regional and national issues associated to design and use of these buildings. Four key themes related to the longevity of use emerged; architectural design, location, economic viability and inclusivity.

Abstract:

This thesis is structured in six chapters. Chapter I contains an introduction and includes purpose, theory, method, and concepts. The main purpose, as depicted by the title, is to examine the roots of Swedish ideology concerning what today is generally named design, as embodied in the concept of more beautiful or better things for everyday life (in Swedish: ”vackrare vardagsvara”).

Chapter II contains a background and includes philosophical ideas and aesthetic movements in Europe which have influenced the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts (in Swedish ”Svenska Slöjdföreningen”, abbreviated SSF) which was later renamed the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (in Swedish: ”Föreningen Svensk Form”). It considers these activities: the Arts and Crafts movement in England, the Swedish national romantic movement, Deutscher Werkbund in Germany, and Swedish moulders of public opinion and new ideas, like Ellen Key, Carl Larsson and Gregor Paulsson.

Chapter III is an ideological biography of Gregor Paulsson. The chapter deals with biographical data and ideological development, and the social aesthetical texts which were important in his activity in the National Museum and as director of The Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts. Gregor Paulsson is considered mainly in his role as social aesthetical propagandist and museologist.

Chapter IV concerns the early history and activities of the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts seen as an introduction to the Baltic Exhibition 1914, and the subsequent schism which eventually led to its reorganization and a new ideological orientation. Its activities were directed towards increased cooperation between artists and industry, and a special department was established as an employment office for companies and designers under the management of the textile artist Elsa Gullberg. This chapter also includes a brief portrait of key persons in the Society.

Chapter V is a study in several sections of the articles for everyday use seen in industrial practice, with Gustavsberg’s china factory and Orrefors’ glassworks as two separate historical studies. The 1917 Home Exhibition is surveyed as an example of the educational ambitions in the development of people’s taste. The focus of the chapter, however, is the international industrial art exhibition in Paris 1925, Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and the debate about it in the Swedish and French press.

Chapter VI consists of a concluding discussion with a final epilogue. It contains suggested questions for future research including relations between design and ethics.

Abstract:
There is many jobs today in Sweden for crime prevention and these happen often through social efforts, but there is way too few of these for the physical environment that actually affects us more than we think they do. The purpose with this study is to make a systematical analysis of the physical environment in three deprives areas and examine if these environments can create crime opportunities. The chosen places are Bergsjön, Rinkeby and Vivalla with current problematic and high crime concentration (Polisen, 2017). Fact and theories such as the Routine Activity Theory, CPTED and Jane Jacobs’s urban ideas is treated in the study’s background. Similarities between the areas physical environment is compiled through map comparisons, place analysis and interviews.   The methods result showed that the traffic separation created many dark tunnels into the areas, which caused unattractive and insecure entries. The buildings in the areas were also not varied and there could be a several of similar houses next to each other or over the whole field. It can be easier for a criminal to commit crimes in a simple surrounding without details, because it is fewer things to keep track of and it becomes much easier to commit the crime when people doesn’t look around themselves. Another similarity was the street structures, for example the three areas had blind alleys that didn't interweave the streets with each other. This contributed to segregated areas and difficulties for the police to arrive and perform their efforts effectively. Even the buildings placement to the street affected whether they had a natural surveillance that could prevent crime. This concluded that the physical environment in these three deprived areas can affect the emergence of crime.

Abstract:
The demand for social housing (HIS) has grown significantly while the internal spaces of these houses have suffered substantial reductions in size, directly affecting the use of the dwelling. In this context, the Residential Leasing Program (PAR) is notable for promoting the construction of dwellings for populations with low purchasing power, differentiated into two construction patterns: PAR-1 and PAR-2. Builders should follow the minimum building codes for construction, furnishings, equipment, living space and low-cost construction, the latter being the most relevant item in the approval of architectural proposals. Ignoring these norms, the designs of the PAR, limited to economic conditions, may manifest problems related to lack of kinesthetic space in the housing in the housing unit, incompatibility between the minimum codes and finished space and difficulty in performing domestic activities. As such, the objective of this thesis in Architecture and Urban Planning was to identify building types and analyze the functional quality of vertical housing of the Residential Leasing Program (PAR) in Maceió-AL, through the existing relationship between architectural design and furnishings with a focus on the graphical analysis of the project. Identified are the types and topological relations existing in the architectural designs of the PAR, analyzed are projects in their dimensional aspects according to the Klein Graphic Method, the composition of furniture and equipment in relation to the minimum specifications of the Caixa; spacial use of furniture and equipment in the housing based on the minimum specifications of both the Caixa and using the Design Methodology approach, developed by Boueri. PAR buildings are classified into three types: H-shaped , central core as well as stairwell and external circulation. The topological analysis showed that in eleven projects of Type 01 internal hallways connected two or three bedrooms as well as service areas.Whereas in Types 02 and 03, the living room is the principal habitation, area, functioning as a distribution point to other areas of the home. The results of the functional analysis revealed the existence of four buildings whose area is below the minimum recommended by the Caixa. The analysis carried out with regards to furniture and equipment demonstrates that the areas most inadequate, in terms of dimension and organization, are the bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. Analyses of living spaces and activity showed that the most adequate rooms were the kitchens and service areas. Bathrooms were, however, the most critical, especially when used by the elderly, people with temporary illness or with mobility restrictions. The functional problems identified in this thesis could have been avoided before the construction of housing units were Caixa to have made a more precise analysis of the compatibility between the design and specifications of the minimum PAR.

Abstract:
The functionality was tested by two different tests, which showed that the product is suitable for usage in the intranet within a company or an organization, there are great benefits from using intranet as a tool for sharing of information. A good intranet contributes to a better flow of information and effective cooperation. SharePoint is a platform for intranet with interactive features, it makes the job easier for staff and even the company. The framework Omnia is a solution designed for Microsoft SharePoint 2013.This essay evaluates how Omnia acts as a framework and what the product is suitable for. Omnia framework evaluates carefully and is an independent assessment carried during this essay. The evaluation is based on scientific studies which are based on the qualitative and quantitative research methodology. The evaluator's main areas are based on system performance, scalability, architecture and functionality. A test prototype develops during the process in the form of an employee vacation request application by the development framework Omnia. The framework Omnia is considered to be suitable for the development of interactive web-based applications for SharePoint. The architecture for the system meets the requirements for scalable systems because it is based on the tier architecture. The system also has good performance but it needs to be improved if the number of users exceeds one thousand. The functionality of this product is quite suitable for the system's usage.

Abstract:
Computer security is a growing field in the IT industry. One of the important aspects of the computer security is authentication. Using passwords (something you know) is one of the most common ways of authentications. But passwords have proven to provide weak level of security as they can be easily compromised. Some other ways of authenticating a user are using physical tokens, (something you possess) and biometrics, (something you are). Using any one of these techniques to secure a system always has its own set of threats. One way to make sure a system is secure is to use multiple factors to authenticate. One of the ways to use multiple factors is to use all the three factors of authentication, something you possess, something you are and something you know. This thesis discusses about different ways of authentication and implements a system using three factor authentication. It takes many security aspects of the system into consideration while implementing it, to make it secure.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis author will conduct a study about architecture in the territory of the High Tatras in the period from the beginning of the recreational and spa architecture to the preparation of the World Championships in the classic ski disciplines in 1970. The topic will be developed firstly in the wider context of the discovery of the mountains by the European culture, gradual settlement and the economic use of the mountains and the emergence and development of climate baths and mountain sports centres. The heart of the study will show the High Tatras as an area of contacts of the Slovak, Czech, Hungarian and Polish architecture, with an emphasis on the mutual influences of Czech and Slovak architecture in the years 1918- 1970. Abstract:
! The thesis is exploring art and architecture in Denmark and Czechoslovakia in the period 1947-1957. The main interest was to see how the interwar avant-garde movements such as Functionalism and Surrealism, as well as the legacy of Bauhaus, developed after the WWII. Yet, Functionalism and Surrealism can also be seen not only as mere artistic styles but as two different attitudes towards life, Rational and Romantic respectively. The latter, which is a passionate protest against the status quo, can especially in its revolutionary or utopian dimension serve as a form of engagement free of the simplifying Cold War binaries.
