Reishus, John William. "Demarcating space : barriers and screens." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/864906.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed by the student was the creation of private, separate spaces within a larger area. It was determined that folding screens could be utilized in a variety of settings and situations thereby providing a flexible solution. As the creation of the folding screens progressed, the student was exposed to ideas and motivating concepts within the artworld which influenced him to consider a more sculptural response to the problem. A shift of the emphasis from the purely functional to a viewer oriented. perceptual interaction with the sculptural space was the result; although the sculptures did not have the obvious usefulness of the folding screens, the student found the sculptures to be personally useful in his artistic development. The primary method of constuction utilized was welding. Several of the sculptures were the result of combining wooden elements and assemblages with welded steel. Sevendifferent artworks were created, three being folding screens and four being sculptural barriers.

Abstract:
The goal of this project was to create a mobile structure in which a suite of paintings could be transported and viewed. When the structure and paintings are arranged as an "installation," they will create a more active role for a "viewer" who could then be defined as a "participant." The participant would be involved in the assembly of the environment and would find more opportunities for interaction in the assembled environment than he or she would in a traditional gallery or museum setting. A description and explanation of the processes involved in the creation of this project is preceded by a discussion of different historical, cultural, and methodological ways by which artwork is or has been presented. Also referenced are different artists and philosophies that informed this project.

Nobbs, Garrett Brandon. "The St. Johns Bridge: a prayer in steel." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/865.

Full text
Abstract:
The St. Johns Bridge is a 1,207 foot span suspension bridge crossing the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, connecting the Portland communities of St. Johns and Linnton on the eastern and western banks, respectively. Commissioned in 1928, the bridge was completed in 1931, with much fanfare in the local community. The two neighborhoods are some distance from downtown Portland, and the bridge brought prestige to an otherwise nondescript locale. It was designed by the New York-based firm of Steinman & Robinson. David Barnard Steinman (1886-1960) acted as the public face for the firm, however, and the design of the bridge has traditionally been ascribed to him in the literature. Steinman was one of the most prominent bridge engineers of the twentieth century, and is recognized today, as he was even within his lifetime, as such. It was a position which he worked fervently to attain. Steinman wrote extensively concerning the St. Johns Bridge and spoke of it as his own; his extensive use of the St. Johns Bridge as an example of aesthetics in bridge engineering is related to the early twentieth-century debate between engineers and architects regarding the role of each in bridge design. As an engineer who sought, without the aid of the architect, to build bridges which were objects of beauty, he asserted the role of the engineer as artist. The predisposition toward the engineered machine aesthetic in the intellectual climate of the avant-garde in the early twentieth century enabled Steinman to style himself as such an artist--even though the St. Johns Bridge, which he frequently employed in this regard, was not a work of functionalist aesthetics. While the architectural avant-garde was borrowing from the engineer for artistic rejuvenation, Steinman was in an advantageous position to argue for the engineer-artist, thereby casting the engineer as an individual sui generis, equal to and without need of the architect.

Full text
Abstract:

Chesters, Robert. "Packaging radio technology during the interwar period (1925-1939) : how did the rise in popularity of the wireless receiver introduce the modernist aesthetic to the British domestic environment?" Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14781.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to identify and explain how, through the consumption of the wireless as a modern consumer durable, modernism was brought to society. To understand this process, the study will map how social change during the period responded to wider intellectual and aesthetic currents and trends but was driven by emergent commercial, cultural and political economies of a newly mediated society. Furthermore, it seeks to establish that this happened not as a result of social engineering through model housing schemes but as a result of consumer-led demand. This investigation considers how, as part of that newly mediated social environment, the wireless developed following its arrival on the domestic market without having adopted a single stylistic form. It addresses how that form, both stylistically and technically, evolved over a relatively short period to address the economic and cultural requirements and expectations of a new electrically powered domestic entertainment technology. In so doing, a discourse will be established considering these expectations and requirements related to how the wireless in Britain adopted and adapted the Modernist design idiom. It will further consider how the language of Modernism was propagated as the accepted version of what a radio could or should look like, so developing the modernist paradigm in a broader sense. To gain an appreciation of this it is necessary to understand the contemporary public conception of what the modern was in a more general sense. To decipher this public perception of modernity the project aims to extrapolate that public conception through examining other popular forms and products. Although this suggests that Radio was not alone in adopting the language of the moderne, as a product it is notable for its widespread commercial success and as such can be identified as a significant carrier of the coded message of what was modern. Design historians such as Yagou and Forty have attempted to incorporate radio into various strands of historical perception but the typologies they have devised to describe and understand wireless fall short in addressing the relationship between modernity and the wireless and instead see the wireless in terms of being an independent consumer product, a quasi-scientific instrument or else a furnishing form, rather than creating categories which accommodate the wireless and its position as a design type in its own right. To overcome this shortcoming a strand of this thesis seeks to argue that the wireless was itself a proto-modernist device during the early years of market expansion. That device then developed along a natural stylistic course embracing contemporary decorative ideas. By assessing the response of radio manufacturers to the socio-economic conditions of their market, this study has highlighted how through producing a product which addressed contemporary ideas of glamour, ease of use and functionality, the wireless entered a wide range of homes during the 1920s and 1930s. For the public, the immediate appeal of the wireless was that it provided access to the international experience of listening in while simultaneously it provided a template for the consumer to base their understanding of the modern World, both in its mediated form and stylistic appearance. This thesis seeks to demonstrate that during the period 1925 to 1939, the wireless established itself as an unashamedly modern device which appealed to a broad socio economic cross section of the public. By consuming the wireless, the British public accepted a significant technological and stylistic aspect of modernity into their homes. This was achieved despite the privations of the era because of the perceived desirability of wireless broadcasts and the perception of listening in as a popular leisure activity. As a result of that consumer demand, the British public was given access to a range of stylistic versions of modernity through the design of radio cabinetry. These modern styles were readily consumed throughout the social spectrum in preference to historicist alternatives. This demonstrates that the wireless was instrumental in introducing the modernist aesthetic to the British domestic environment.

Beesley, Thomas Charles. "Art, the architectonic and functionality." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/18973/.

Full text
Abstract:
What is the status and position of the ‘functional’ art object? My research has sought to consider the role of the object in recent examples of socially-engaged art practice, by examining the notion of the ‘useful’ in contemporary art as conceptualized by theorist Stephen Wright and his advocates. By interrogating the praxis of the Turner Prize winning architectural collective Assemble and the deeper social-engagement of American artist Theaster Gates, I have sought to decode the institutional structures supporting their work, permitting a more nuanced assessment of the status of the useful object as art. During my research I undertook a six-month collaborative project with the staff and students of an M.Arch module at the Sheffield School of Architecture. The module addressed issues of local energy generation and use within a geo-sociological context and gave me the opportunity to create a body of work in response to these themes of utility. Through the development of my own praxis, the concomitant practice-led research and the critical distance this has permitted, I have been able to consider art’s relationship to objects of utility within the epistemologies of both my art and design background. For, as I conclude, it may be better to view these objects as the result of socially-engaged creativity – as critically-engaged architectonic design – rather than objects of art, thereby encouraging contemporary art practice to continue to stand in autonomous opposition to the instrumentalizing forces of capitalism.

Abstract:
This essay discusses two aspects of the retention of pragmatic text functions in translation. The functionalist approach that was used focuses on achieving congruence between the author’s intended function and the perception of the reader, i.e., the target text’s actual function. The first aim was to examine whether a focus on text functions can be beneficial when translating terminology. The second aim was to investigate if a functionalist approach can be used to assure that all functions are retained for instances where the source text encompasses more than one pragmatic function. For the purposes of this study, two excerpts from Fritz Eichenberg’s art history book The Art of the Print were translated. Individual terms as well as instances where the source text segment contained one than more pragmatic function were then analyzed with the above mentioned aims in mind. It was found that a functionalist approach, in combination with a conceptual approach to terminology, was beneficial when translating terminology. It was also observed that the surrounding co-text aided in the understanding of the author’s concept. In regard to the second aim, it was found that while a functionalist approach assured that the translator was made aware of the existing functions, the translation procedures suggested were too narrow and static to be applicable to all segments.

Although many functions were indeed possible, this research will be restricted to the discussion of collections in which objects reveal the collector’s devotional, social, and intellectual curiosity. These classifications reflect the most prevalent themes initiated by my research on collections of royal and affluent collectors during the Early Modern Period, and as such are the three most rational means of discussing collections as functional, working, tools.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis is structured in six chapters. Chapter I contains an introduction and includes purpose, theory, method, and concepts. The main purpose, as depicted by the title, is to examine the roots of Swedish ideology concerning what today is generally named design, as embodied in the concept of more beautiful or better things for everyday life (in Swedish: ”vackrare vardagsvara”).

Chapter II contains a background and includes philosophical ideas and aesthetic movements in Europe which have influenced the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts (in Swedish ”Svenska Slöjdföreningen”, abbreviated SSF) which was later renamed the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (in Swedish: ”Föreningen Svensk Form”). It considers these activities: the Arts and Crafts movement in England, the Swedish national romantic movement, Deutscher Werkbund in Germany, and Swedish moulders of public opinion and new ideas, like Ellen Key, Carl Larsson and Gregor Paulsson.

Chapter III is an ideological biography of Gregor Paulsson. The chapter deals with biographical data and ideological development, and the social aesthetical texts which were important in his activity in the National Museum and as director of The Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts. Gregor Paulsson is considered mainly in his role as social aesthetical propagandist and museologist.

Chapter IV concerns the early history and activities of the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts seen as an introduction to the Baltic Exhibition 1914, and the subsequent schism which eventually led to its reorganization and a new ideological orientation. Its activities were directed towards increased cooperation between artists and industry, and a special department was established as an employment office for companies and designers under the management of the textile artist Elsa Gullberg. This chapter also includes a brief portrait of key persons in the Society.

Chapter V is a study in several sections of the articles for everyday use seen in industrial practice, with Gustavsberg’s china factory and Orrefors’ glassworks as two separate historical studies. The 1917 Home Exhibition is surveyed as an example of the educational ambitions in the development of people’s taste. The focus of the chapter, however, is the international industrial art exhibition in Paris 1925, Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and the debate about it in the Swedish and French press.

Chapter VI consists of a concluding discussion with a final epilogue. It contains suggested questions for future research including relations between design and ethics.

Abstract:
The study investigates how museum and gallery buildings can be designed to give functional longevity and appeal. It considers this in terms of their design and relation to their surroundings and use in the context of changing social, cultural, political and economic factors. Post World War II the typological design and layout of these buildings was challenged; partly as a result of the influence of modernism and also as new modes of art production challenged the spaces and display modes. Financial instability and class perception have always been problematic and increased public expectations add to issues that need addressing. The study investigates how these factors have impacted on these buildings and if this has influenced their design and use. It considers the regional context of the West Midlands and also draws comparisons to other areas in England to investigate ways of addressing contemporary issues to achieve longevity of use. The study considers the historical influence of the typological developments. Examples from the West Midlands and investigation of the area’s historical background are used to identify if regional idiosyncrasies exist and if these influence a building’s longevity. This establishes their contemporary context and objectively reviews the resulting implications of appearance and function in relation to the social, cultural and economic issues that may be dominant within this region. A qualitative interview methodology and analysis is used to examine the views of a multidisciplinary group of museum and gallery users, capturing a snapshot in time of their views on the appearance, understanding and use of these buildings. This information is analysed and discussed in conjunction with the findings of the relevant literature. The comparison of the information researched raises regional and national issues associated to design and use of these buildings. Four key themes related to the longevity of use emerged; architectural design, location, economic viability and inclusivity.

This thesis on historical development of the construction of residential buildings and its effect on market prices of dwellings currently in Liberec accompanies the issue of correlation between architectural styles and price currently. It is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is focused on explaining concepts such as housing, housing stock, housing market and its failure, which follows the historical description of the construction of residential buildings. In other chapters of this part is talking about urban planning and housing policy. The practical part looks at this issue from the perspective of a particular town, which is Liberec. For him the basic information about the local conditions, history of architecture and subsequently through the commodities market tested real estate prices mentioned correlation and era of construction. The main source of research is in the thesis comparing average prices per m2 for each building type. During and at the end, the results are commented and compared.

Abstract:
Sialyltransferases, CMP-sialic acid synthetases and CMP-sialic acid transport proteins play a crucial role in the construction of cell surface glycoconjugates. These proteins also have a pivotal role to play in a number of diseases, including cancer. The sialyltransferase enzymes are responsible for transfering sialic acids from the donor substrate (CMP-sialic acid) to growing cell surface glycoconjugate chains within the Golgi apparatus. The CMP-sialic acid synthetase enzymes are responsible for the synthesis of the CMP-sialic acid, the donor substrate of the sialyltransferases in the nucleus, while the CMP-sialic acid transport proteins are responsible for transporting CMP-sialic acid from the Cytosol to the Golgi apparatus. When these proteins function in an abnormal way, hypersialylation results, leading to an increased level of sialylation on the cell surface. This increased level of sialylation aids in the detachment of primary tumour cells due to an increase in the level of overall negative charge, causing repulsion between the cancer cells. Therefore, the sialyltransferase enzymes, CMP-sialic acid synthetases and CMP-sialic acid transport proteins are intimately involved in the metastatic cascade associated with cancer. Chapter 1 provides a general introduction of cancer metastasis, discussing the roles of three target proteins (CMP-sialic acid synthetases, CMP-sialic acid transport proteins and sialyltransferases), as well as discussing their substrate specificities, with an emphasis on their involvements in cancer metastasis. The Chapter concludes with an overview of the types of compounds intended to be utilised as probes or inhibitors of these proteins. Chapter 2 describes the general approach towards the synthesis of CMP-Neu5Ac mimetics with a sulfur linkage in the presence of a phosphate group in the general structure 38. The precursor phosphoramidite derivative 45 was prepared and isolated in a good yield using Py.TFA. Unfortunately, the target compound 38 could not be prepared. Chapter 3 describes an alternative strategy wherein S-linked sialylnucleoside mimetics, of the general structure 39, with a sulfur linkage, but no phosphate group, between the sialylmimetic and the ribose moiety in the base is targeted. A series of these S-linked sialylnucleoside mimetics were successfully prepared. Cytidine, uridine, adenosine and 5-fluorouridine nucleosides were used to create a library of different nucleosides and with structural variability also present in the sialylmimetic portion. This small 'library' of 15 compounds was designed to shed light on the interaction of these compounds with the binding sites of the sialyltranferase, CMP-sialic acid synthetase and/or CM-sialic acid transport protein. Approaches towards the synthesis of O-linked sialylnucleoside mimetics of the general structure 40 are described in Chapter 4. Several methodologies are reported, as well as protecting group manipulations, for successful preparation of these sialylnucleoside mimetics. Cytidine and uridine were employed as the nucleosides, thus allowing a direct comparison between the O- and S-linked sialylnucleoside mimetics in biological evaluation. It appears from these synthetic investigations that gaining access into the O-linked series is not as straightforward as for the S-linked series, with alternative protecting group strategies required for the different nucleosides. The biological evaluation of some of the compounds reported in Chapters 3 and 4 is detailed in Chapter 5. The sialylnucleoside mimetics were evaluated, by 1H NMR spectroscopy, for their ability to inhibit CMP-KDN synthetase. In addition, an initial 1H NMR spectroscopic-based assay was investigated for inhibition studies of α(2,6)sialyltranferase in the absence of potential inhibitors. The final chapter (Chapter 6) brings together full experimental details in support of the compounds described in the preceding Chapters.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented here describes novel IgG4 formats that may be preferred format of choice when IgG4 is employed as a therapeutic. These formats have also improved our knowledge of IgG4 biology and may be used as tools to further investigate IgG4. IgG4 is one of four human IgG isotypes and has a number of unique characteristics when compared to the other IgG isotypes. A particular distinctive feature is that the inter-heavy chain disulphide bonds are liable to form intra-heavy chain disulphide bonds which is partially responsible for driving IgG4 Fab arm exchange whereby two IgG4 antibodies of different specificity exchange to form monovalent bispecific molecules. Comparative thermal stability analysis between isotypes has also shown that IgG 1 is more stable than tgG4. Of particular interest is that fact that the interdomain CL-CH 1 disulphide bond arrangement also differs between the isotypes. This thesis reports on investigations into improving the Fab domain thermal stability of an JgG4 by altering the inter-domain disulphide bond to mimic that of an IgG I inter-domain disulphide bond. Upon the generat ion of such molecules, whether such an altered disu lphide bond arrangement and any related improved stability influenced Fab arm exchange was also investigated. The novel Ig04 molecules generated that contained an IgO I like inter-domain disulphide CL -CH I arrangement exhibited increased Fab domain thermal stability. The extent of the increase in Fab domain thermal stability was dependent on the associated variable region. The Fab domain thermal stability could be further increased by appropriate placement of the novel disulph ide bond and mutations to the residues surrounding the disulphide. Fab arm exchange data showed that the placement of the novel inter-domain disulphide can reduce Fab arm exchange activity, but that an increase in Fab domain thermal stabil ity does not necessari ly reduce Fab arm exchange activity. The novel Ig04 mutants with reduced disu lphide bond heterogeneity, increased Fab domain thermal stability and reduced Fab Arm Exchange activity generated here offer potential advantages over Ig04 wild type molecules as biotherapeutic agents.

Abstract:
Background: The eHealth era has fully arrived and initiatives to increase and improve utilization of ICT in health care organizations are made in Sweden as in many other countries. However, much focus in research take place after implementation, evaluating the effects of these initiatives, and very little focus is regarding why development projects actually result in certain functionality. Also, few are problematizing the concept of what eHealth services are and what their contribution shall be on the health care environment. Aim and Objective: The main aim of this research was to explore and understand different perspectives and assumptions regarding aims in an eHealth service development. Further, the aim was to create an understanding for how these trough social interaction and activity in an actual development project will construct actual functionality. Method: A qualitative research method was chosen and conducted from a social constructivist point of view. A case, consisting of an eHealth service development project in Jonkoping County Council, where used for data collection through observations and interviews with the participants in the project team. To support formulation of research questions and thematization, a research metaphor was developed. Results: The result of this thesis contains several theoretical and empirical based perspectives and assumptions on eHealth services. eHealth services are expected to support efficiency, information security, extensive usage, pushing bigger changes in the health care environment, be a new and exciting way of working, changing the roles of patients and caregivers and creating empowered and motivated patients. Other result show that, even if all participants felt pleased with the project result, it was hard to relate all choices in functionality to their effect on use quality and expected outcome from using them. Implications are made for how soft system aspects should be included in the project process in development of eHealth services for defining and managing use quality and its relation to system quality.

Abstract:
Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) are ubiquitous in nature, having evolved over many millenia with their hosts. While in healthy hosts most infections with CMV are asymptomatic, the virus can cause severe disease in immunocompromised hosts. Thus, the increase in organ transplantation and the HIV/AIDS pandemic have established human CMV (HCMV) as a clinically important pathogen. Indeed, HCMV infections are now the major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients, which has led to more research targeting CMV for effective anti-viral treatment. The discovery that cytomegaloviruses encode several genes which are involved in immune escape has prompted a new area of research, aimed at understanding immune escape mechanisms for exploitation as potential anti-viral therapeutics. By targeting the viral proteins directly, or their receptors in the host, it may be possible to treat CMV disease by agonistic/antagonistic therapy. The first part of this thesis describes the first demonstration of anti-NK1.1 staining in situ to identify NK cells using a modified in vivo perfusion/fixation method. Using this method, we have compared the acute NK1.1+ cellular response to wild-type MCMV infection in the visceral organs of genetically susceptible intra-NK complex recombinant BALB.B6-CT6 (Cmv1s, NK1.1+) mice with resistant C57B⁄J (Cmv1r, NK1.1+) and BALB.B6-Cmv1r mice (Cmv1r, NK1.1+). Expression of viral antigens and the consequences of infection on other cellular subsets, were also analyzed in this study. The data show that in susceptible mice (Cmv1s) MCMV infection is predominent in the marginal zone of splenic white pulp, resulting in local changes in various cellular constituents, including macrophages, NK cells and DC. In the liver, distinct foci of infection were comprised of large numbers of macrophages and NK1.1+ cells surrounding infected cytomegalic cells. In resistant mice (Cmv1r), 6 MCMV infection predominantly affected the red-pulp of the spleen and was associated with increased accumulation of NK1.1+ cells and macrophages at sites of viral infection

Abstract:
In modelling the energetics of molecules and solids, the need for practical electron density functionals that seamlessly include the van der Waals interaction is growing. Such functionals are still in their infancy, and there is yet much experimentation to be performed in the formulation and numerical testing of the requisite approximations. A ground-state density functional approach that uses the exact relations of the adiabatic connection formula and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to obtain the xc energy from the density-density response function seems promising, though a direct local density approximation for the interacting susceptibility will fail to yield the vdW interaction. Significant nonlocality can be built into the interacting susceptibility by screening a 'bare' susceptibility, for which a carefully chosen constraint-obeying local approximation is sufficient to yield a non-trivial van der Waals energy [6]. The constraints of charge conservation, and no response to a constant potential, are guaranteed by expressing the bare susceptibility in terms of the double gradients of a nonlocal bare polarisability. for which it should be easier to make an approximation based on physical principles than it would be for the susceptibility. The 'no-flow' condition is also deemed important. In this work, a simple delta-function approximation for the nonlocal polarisability is fully constrained by a new version of a recently-discovered force theorem (sum rule), requiring the additional input of the independent-electron Kohn-Sham potential. This constrained polarisability cannot be used as input for the seamless vdW scheme, which requires a non-delta-function bare polarisability, and is instead applied to systems containing spherical fragments in a perturbative/asymptotic fashion for calculation of the widely-separated van der Waals interaction. The main thrust of this work is an investigation of the efficacy of the force theorem to constrain simple approximations for response quantities. Many recent perturbative vdW density functionals are based on response functions that are electron-hydrodynamical approximations to the response of the uniform electron gas. These schemes require their response functions to be 'cut off' at low density and high density-gradient, where the approximation overestimates the true response. The imposition of the cut-off is crucial to the success of such schemes. Here, we replace the cut-off with an exact theorem (the force theorem) which naturally 'ties down' the response, based on the potential- and density-functions of the system. This is the first time that the force theorem has been directly applied as a constraint upon a model response function (its original use, by Vignale and Kohn (7), was as an exact identity in time-dependent DFT). Also new in this work is the orbital-by-orbital Kohn-Sham version of the force theorem, and its proof (differing significantly from Vignale's original derivation (8) of the interacting theorem) by directly appealing to the Kohn-Sham orbitals makes its first appearance here. For quantum dots, our constrained response-approximation exactly recovers the net linear dipole response, due mainly to the force theorem's ideal applicability to harmonically confined systems. For angularly-averaged atoms, reasonable static dipole polarisabilities are obtained for the independent-electron Kohn-Sham (bare) case. The results are poor for the fully-interacting case, attributable to the local nature of the approximation. This lends weight to the assertion that it is better to approximate a bare quantity, then screen it, than it is to directly approximate a fully-interacting quantity. Dynamic net polarisabilities constrained by the force theorem are guaranteed to have the correct high-frequency asymptotic convergence to the free electron response. It is seen that the calculated dynamic polarisabilities for atoms are too small at intermediate frequencies, since the calculated vdW C6 coefficients (Hamaker constants) of atomic dimers are up to an order of magnitude too small, even without the use of a low-density cutoff. It is seen that our constrained local model response is non-analytic along the imaginary-frequency axis, and this is very detrimental to the C6 calculations, even though the integrated net polarisability is analytic. Improvement of the polarisability ansatz is indicated, perhaps to a non-deltafunction uniform-gas-based approximation. The use of pseudopotentials may improve the force theorem results, by softening the extreme nature of the bare Coulomb potential.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the design and synthesis of Au(I) and Ag(I) complexes from ligand systems that aim to combine both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and phosphine ligand types. A number of synthetic approaches towards both the ligands and the prepared metal complexes have been developed, with a concerted effort on achieving the desired Au(I) or Ag(I) complexes with minimal reaction steps and synthetic style. The thesis body is divided into two main sections. The first section addresses the preparation of suitable ligand precursors of potential Au(I) and Ag(I) complexes in the form of halo- and phosphino-functionalised imidazolium salts. Several series of haloalkylimidazolium salts were prepared that encompass a range of halogens (Cl, Br, I), alkyl substituents (Me, i-Pr, t-Bu, n-Bu), differing alkyl linker length (n = 0-3), and a variety of organic spacers employed to bridge multi-imidazolium moieties. Novel bidentate and multidentate phosphinoalkylimidazolium salts were synthesised from the various haloalkylimidazolium salts, via the substitution of a halide with nucleophilic diphenylphosphide. A new approach towards rare methylene bridged phosphinomethylimidazolium salts was achieved from the reactions of halomethylimidazolium salts with diphenylphosphine. The second section investigates the preparation of Au(I) and Ag(I) complexes from the halo- and phosphino-functionalised imidazolium salts. A series of dicationic 10, 12, and 14-membered metallacyclic Ag(I) complexes were prepared from the bidentate phosphinoalkylimidazolium salts. The dinuclear Ag(I) metallacycles combine two phosphino-functionalised NHC ligands that are bridged by two coordinated Ag(I) ions in an exclusively head-to-head arrangement. A dinuclear Ag(I) metallacycle was investigated for transmetallation potential to a Au(I) complex and found to selectively transmetallate at the Ag(I) coordinated to the NHC ligands to form a bimetallic metallacycle. Unexpected phosphine oxidation of a 10-membered dinuclear Ag(I) metallacycle resulted in complex disproportionation to an isolable and rare silver(I) trimer. Metal-NHC complexes from haloalkylimidazolium salts have not been reported previously, a novel approach to the synthesis of a series of Au(I) complexes from haloalkylimidazolium salts and a respective gold source was developed and is reported herein. Different synthetic approaches towards Au(I) complexes with the phosphinoalkylimidazolium salts explored a variety of ways to generate the NHC from an imidazolium in the presence of the phosphine. A one-pot, high yielding synthesis of a dinuclear Au(I) complex from PPh3 was also devised, with controlled assembly of the complex resulting in a similar head-to-head ligand arrangement to the dinuclear Ag(I) metallacycles. As an aside, a family of mononuclear [Au(R2NHC)2]+ complexes (R = Me, i-Pr, t- Bu, n-Bu, Cy) prepared previously in our research group, was expanded because of the promising antimitochondrial activity shown by [Au(i-Pr2NHC)2]+. Two new [Au(R2NHC)2]+ complexes with simple alkyl chain functionality were prepared with fine-tuned lipophilicity in close proximity to that of [Au(i-Pr2NHC)2]+.

Nuclear structure is subject to a major renewal linked with the development of radioactive ion beams (such as the SPIRAL 1 and 2 beams at GANIL). Mean-field and/or density-functional methods are among the best suited for studying nuclei produced at such facilities. The present work aims at demonstrating how existing functionals can be improved so as to exhibit a better predictive power in little-explored regions of the nuclear chart. We propose a better description of the isospin-dependence of the effective interaction, and examine the relevance of adding a tensor coupling. We show how a new generation of functionals can be better constrained by considering results obtained beyond the mean-field approximation. Finally, we attempt establishing a link with the bare nucleon-nucleon potential for the description of pairing, thus participating in the construction of a non-empirical functional

The purpose of this paper is to explore certain properties of Banach spaces. The first chapter begins with basic definitions, includes examples of Banach spaces, and concludes with some properties of continuous linear functionals. In the second chapter, dimension is discussed; then one version of the Hahn-Banach Theorem is presented. The third chapter focuses on dual spaces and includes an example using co, RI, and e'. The role of locally convex spaces is also explored in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, several more theorems concerning dual spaces and related topologies are presented. The final chapter focuses on reflexive spaces. In the main theorem, the relation between compactness and reflexivity is examined. The paper concludes with an example of a non-reflexive space.

Abstract:
Subject of information entity is one of the fundamental concepts in the field of information science. Subject of any document represents its intellectual potential -- 'aboutness' of the document. Traditionally, subject (along with title and author) is the one of three major ways to access information, so subject metadata plays a central role in this process and the role is constantly growing. Previous research concluded that the larger bibliographic database is, the richer subject vocabularies and classification schemes are needed to support information discovery. Further, a high proportion of information objects are unretrievable without subject headings in metadata records. This exploratory study provides the analysis of the subject metadata in MARC 21 bibliographic records created in 2020; and develops understanding of the level and patterns of 'aboutness' representation in the MARC 21 bibliographic records. Study also examines how these records apply the recent RDA and MARC21 guidelines and features intended to support functionality in a Linked Data environment. Methods of Social Network Analysis were applied along with content analysis, to answer research questions of this study. Suggestions for future research, implications for education, and practical recommendations for library metadata creation and management are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on performing an analysis in the form of a comparative study of two leisure boats with functional, economic and sustainability aspects in focus. The project is based and focuses on an electric hydrofoil boat The Candela Seven from electric motorboat manufacturer Candela Speed Boat AB where the boat is compared with the motorboat AMT 230 GP from Advanced Marine Tech Premium Boats and evaluatedpartly with the help of the Institute of Marine Environment's cooperation betweendifferent institutions in Sweden as a reference framework. The project goals are to, through analysis and evaluations of comparative work, designate the boat that will be prioritized between Candela Seven and AMT 230 GP andgive eventual recommendations from a functional, financial and sustainabilityperspective. The work started with a current situation analysis to create insight into the productfunctionality of the boats, what economic and sustainability benefits the product hasand what the market looks like for electric boats with customer needs in focus. Forfurther analysis of collected data and facts for comparative work, SWOT andquantitative analysis methods were performed and through mathematical reasoning andanalyzes to identify the boat's properties and advantages compared to the competitor. In comparison analysis, a comparison matrix is used for valuation and compilation ofdifferent parameters against each other and to designate the boat to be prioritized. In the comparison analysis with various parameters, Candela Seven was shown to be amore favorable boat to choose or buy and which is prioritized in comparison with theAMT 230 GP. The focus can be on finding more customers that are interesting, orproduct adaptation to fulfill customer needs. The current situation analysis was carried out which shows that a main competitor witha petrol-powered boat was identified and is a substitute that challenges the product.Excellent features from the SWOT and Quantitative analysis are that Candela Seven isenergy-saving and more profitable to operate with less maintenance cost compared to the AMT 230 GP. In addition, the product is more environmentally proficient whendriving with sustainability-thinking properties and design.

Abstract:
In this research the validity of various computational techniques has been determined and applied the appropriate techniques to investigate and propose a good catalytic system for C-H bond activation and functionalization. Methane being least reactive and major component of natural gas, its activation and conversion to functionalized products is of great scientific and economic interest in pure and applied chemistry. Thus C-H activation followed by C-C/C-X functionalization became crux of the synthesis. DFT (density functional theory) methods are well suited to determine the thermodynamic as well as kinetic factors of a reaction. The obtained results are helpful to industrial catalysis and experimental chemistry with additional information: since C-X (X = halogens) bond cleavage is important in many metal catalyzed organic syntheses, the results obtained in this research helps in determining the selectivity (kinetic or thermodynamic) advantage. When C-P bond activation is considered, results from chapter 3 indicated that C-X activation barrier is lower than C-H activation barrier. The results obtained from DFT calculations not only gave a good support to the experimental results and verified the experimentally demonstrated Ni-atom transfer mechanism from Ni=E (E = CH2, NH, PH) activating complex to ethylene to form three-membered ring products but also validated the application of late transition metal complexes in respective process. Results obtained supported the argument that increase in metal coordination and electronic spin state increases catalytic activity of FeIII-imido complexes. These results not only encouraged the fact that DFT and multi-layer ONIOM methods are good to determine geometry and thermodynamics of meta-stable chemical complexes, but also gave a great support to spectroscopic calculations like NMR and Mossbauer calculations.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on C-O bonds activation by transition metal atoms. Lignin is a potential alternative energy resource, but currently is an underused biomass species because of its highly branched structure. To aid in better understanding this species, the oxidative cleavage of the Cβ-O bond in an archetypal arylglycerol β-aryl ether (β–O–4 Linkage) model compound of lignin with late 3d, 4d, and 5d metals was investigated. Methoxyethane was utilized as a model molecule to study the activation of the C-O bond. Binding enthalpies (ΔHb), enthalpy formations (ΔH) and activation enthalpies (ΔH‡) have been studied at 298K to learn the energetic properties in the C-O bond cleavage in methoxyethane. Density functional theory (DFT) has become a common choice for the transition metal containing systems. It is important to select suitable functionals for the target reactions, especially for systems with degeneracies that lead to static correlation effects. A set of 26 density functionals including eight GGA, six meta-GGA, six hybrid-GGA, and six hybrid-meta-GGA were applied in order to investigate the performance of different types of density functionals for transition metal catalyzed C-O bond cleavage. A CR-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ was used to calibrate the performance of different density functionals.

Abstract:
Quantum chemistry methodologies can be used to address a wide variety of chemical problems. Key to the success of quantum chemistry methodologies, however, is the selection of suitable methodologies for specific problems of interest, which often requires significant assessment. To gauge a number of methodologies, the utility of density functionals (BLYP, B97D, TPSS, M06L, PBE0, B3LYP, M06, and TPSSh) in predicting reaction energetics was examined for model studies of C-O bond activation of methoxyethane and methanol. These species provide excellent representative examples of lignin degradation via C-O bond cleavage. PBE0, which performed better than other considered DFT functionals, was used to investigate late 3d (Fe, Co, and Ni), 4d (Ru, Rh, and Pd), and 5d (Re, Os, and Ir) transition metal atom mediated Cβ -O bond activation of the β–O–4 linkage of lignin. Additionally, the impact of the choice of DFT functionals, basis sets, implicit solvation models, and layered quantum chemical methods (i.e., ONIOM, Our Own N-layered Integrated molecular Orbital and molecular Mechanics) was investigated for the prediction of pKa for a set of Ni-group metal hydrides (M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) in acetonitrile. These investigations have provided insight about the utility of a number of theoretical methods in the computation of thermodynamic properties of transition metal hydrides in solution. As single reference wavefunction methods commonly perform poorly in describing molecular systems that involve bond-breaking and forming or electronic near-degeneracies and are typically best described with computationally costly multireference wavefunction-based methods, it is imperative to a priori analyze the multireference character for molecular systems so that the proper methodology choice is applied. In this work, diagnostic criteria for assessing the multireference character of 4d transition metal-containing molecules was investigated. Four diagnostics were considered in this work, including the weight of the leading configuration of the CASSCF wavefunction, C02; T1, the Frobenius norm of the coupled cluster amplitude vector related to single excitations and D1, the matrix norm of the coupled cluster amplitude vector arising from coupled cluster calculations; and the percent total atomization energy, %TAE. This work demonstrated the need to have different diagnostic criteria for 4d molecules than for main group molecules.

Abstract:
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is an effective tool for studying diverse metal systems. Presented herein are studies of a variety of metal systems, which can be applied to accomplish transformations that are currently difficult/impossible to achieve. The specific topics studied utilizing DFT include: 1) C–H bond activation via an Earth-abundant transition metal complex, 2) C–H bond deprotonation via an alkali metal superbase, 3) and amination/aziridination reactions utilizing a CuI reagent. Using DFT, the transformation to methanol (CH3OH) from methane (CH4) was examined. The transition metal systems studied for this transformation included a model FeII complex. This first-row transition metal is an economical, Earth-abundant metal. The ligand set for this transformation includes a carbonyl ligand in one set of complexes as well as a phosphite ligand in another. The 3d Fe metal shows the ability to convert alkyls/aryls to their oxidized counterpart in an energetically favorable manner. Also, “superbasic” alkali metal amides were investigated to perform C—H bond cleavage. Toluene was the substrate of interest with Cs chosen to be the metal of interest because of the highly electropositive nature of this alkali metal. These highly electrophilic Cs metal systems allow for very favorable C—H bond scission with a toluene substrate. Finally, the amination and aziridination of C–H and C=C bonds, respectively, by a CuI reagent was studied. The mechanism was investigated using DFT calculations. Presently, these mechanisms involving the use of coinage metals are debated. Our DFT simulations shed some insight into how these transformations occur and ultimately how they can be manipulated.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: After decades of its struggle against the apartheid policy and system, and after the victory in the first democratic elections in 1994, the pre-1994 co operation within the alliance of the African National Congress (ANC), the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) created the framework of reference for the legal infrastructure of a new Industrial Re[ations ([R) system in which trade unions, employers and government would act together in a spirit of tripartism. The legal infrastructure of the new IR system was thus aligned with the new politica[ dispensation and in compliance with the new Constitution (200 of 1993) with its overarching aim as the correction of the imbalances of the past by ensuring both, a climate supportive of growth and the pursuit of social equity for all South Africans. However, in the wake of the 1994 elections, more and more ideo[ogical differences have arisen within the Alliance, also fostered by South Africa's unequal income distribution, the [ow life expectancy, the [ow literacy rates, high infant mortality, one of the highest H[V/Aids infection rates among the black population and its strong investor - unfriendly climate, all affecting effective policy making. [n particular, the ANC's 'shift to the right' with its Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) strategy for macroeconomic development is alienating it from its alliance partners. Nevertheless, a new package of labour legislation was structured around the core of the individual contract of employment, resting in common law, with the Basic Condition of Employment Act (75 of 1997) setting minimum standards, and the new Labour Relations Act (66 of 1997) providing the framework for a collective bargaining system. The new Labour Relations Act integrates co operation in the [R system by enabling trade unions and employers to establish and regulate formally their relationships for the purpose of collective bargaining and creating machineries for the resolution of disputes of interest on the one side, and an employee - employer relationship based on rights vested in the parties in an enterprise, domestic context on the other. Provisions for a certain form of codetermination by, and participation of workers in the taking of decisions by management on the shop floor are legally entrenched in Chapter V - Workplace Forums - of the Labour Relations Act. Chapter V of the Labour Relations Act (66 of 1995) stipulates the requirements for the establishment of a Workplace Forum and defines and regulates its functions. If the definition and structure of such a Workplace Forum as contained in the respective schedule of the Act are compared with the German Betriebsverfassungsgesetz of 1952 and 1972, numerous similarities can be observed, and a quasi - adoption and incorporation of the German act as a blueprint for Chapter Vof the South African act can be assumed. However, whereas in Germany co-determination and the 8etriebsvedassungsgesetz of 1952 and 1972 have evolved naturally over the years, workers participation in South Africa through a Workplace Forum appears to be a mere legal creation, conceived on the drawing board for the new legislation, without any particular tradition and an effective place in the IR system. Additionally, questions raised in connection with its constitutionality leaves the quasiimported provisions of Chapter V in a doubtful light. I n analogy to the German Verfassungsklage of 1976 against the then new Mitbestimmungsgesetz, the focus of this study falls on a hypothetical test whether the provisions of Chapter V would be in accord with the new South African Constitution (200 of 1993), and also the constitution of their 'importing country', namely Germany. Several grey areas exist in which the Constitutional Courts of both countries would most probably have to declare some provisions as unconstitutional, the most important one being that, since the establishment of a Workplace Forum is linked only to the initiative of an existing representative union, the Freedom of Association of the individual is impaired.

Abstract:
Density functional theory is an efficient and useful method of solving single-reference computational chemistry problems, however it struggles with multi-reference systems. Modifications have been developed in order to improve the capabilities of density functional theory. In this work, density functional theory has been successfully applied to solve multi-reference systems with large amounts of non-dynamical correlation by use of modifications. It has also been successfully applied for geometry optimizations for lanthanide trifluorides.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in a range of biological functions including the differentiation, proliferation and survival of many cell types. The TNF gene lies in the class III region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), approximately 250 Kbp centromeric of the HLA-B locus and 850 Kbp telomeric of HLA-DR. Due to the genomic location and biological relevance of TNF, it is thought that genetic heterogeneity at this locus may be associated with autoimmune and infectious diseases. A G-to-A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at position -308 (relative to the transcriptional start site) in the TNF promoter has been well described. The less common -308A variant has been shown to be linked with the HLA-A1, B8, DR3 haplotype which in turn has been associated to a high TNF producing phenotype. Determining whether the -308 polymorphism contributes to elevated levels of expression has therefore been a priority for many research groups. Some investigators have shown differences in transcription between the -308G and -308A alleles while others could not. These contradicting results have led to conflicting views regarding the functional relevance of the -308 SNP. In this study, statistical analysis of 18 independent transient transfections of -308 biallelic TNF reporter constructs have provided evidence for a functional consequence of the polymorphism. ... In addition, chromatin accessibility of this region was maximal at greater levels of transcription suggesting a role for both chromatin structure and YY1 binding in -308G regulation. Surprisingly, chromatin structure did not seem to play a role in -308A regulation nor was there any significant binding of YY1, suggesting the -308 region does not affect transcriptional control of TNF. Taken as a whole, the G-to-A SNP relieves YY1 binding and demonstrates an allele-specific regulatory mechanism controlling expression. A growing list of promoter polymorphisms exists in the human genome having associations with certain diseases. Determining the functional consequence of these SNPs has proven difficult and utilized mainly in vitro approaches. In this thesis, a unique approach to investigating the functionality of promoter polymoprhisms has been developed, utilizing in vivo techniques which test their effects in a more natural system. It is hoped that the identification of the allele-specific YY1-mediated control of the -308 region of the TNF promoter may provide insight into overexpression as a consequence of the polymorphism and its role in the genetic susceptibility to MHC-associated autoimmune disease.

Abstract:
The Dallas Morning News is a leader in using engagement journalism to increase and retain digital subscribers. This ethnography examined the efficacy of the engagement journalism work by the News in rebuilding trust and forming relationships with its audience. This research is exceptionally timely as more newsrooms are erecting paywalls to their content and asking their audiences to offer monetary support in exchange for greater access and engagement by journalists. This work is examined through two mass communications theories: functionalism, which says a society can be viewed like an ecosystem as a "system in balance" consisting of complex sets of interrelated activities, each of which supports the others in maintaining the system as a whole; and the dual responsibility model, which says that companies should operate in the best interests of all in the community who depend on them, not only those who benefit financially. Additionally, the work is considered from a human-interaction design standpoint to evaluate whether the News has created affordances that enable the journalists and the readers to communicate, and whether the journalists are effectively practicing service design when publishing news and information for the audience.

Prascher, Brian P. "Systematic Approaches to Predictive Computational Chemistry using the Correlation Consistent Basis Sets." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2009. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc9920/.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of the correlation consistent basis sets, cc-pVnZ (where n = D, T, Q, etc.) have allowed for the systematic elucidation of the intrinsic accuracy of ab initio quantum chemical methods. In density functional theory (DFT), where the cc-pVnZ basis sets are not necessarily optimal in their current form, the elucidation of the intrinsic accuracy of DFT methods cannot always be accomplished. This dissertation outlines investigations into the basis set requirements for DFT and how the intrinsic accuracy of DFT methods may be determined with a prescription involving recontraction of the cc-pVnZ basis sets for specific density functionals. Next, the development and benchmarks of a set of cc-pVnZ basis sets designed for the s-block atoms lithium, beryllium, sodium, and magnesium are presented. Computed atomic and molecular properties agree well with reliable experimental data, demonstrating the accuracy of these new s-block basis sets. In addition to the development of cc-pVnZ basis sets, the development of a new, efficient formulism of the correlation consistent Composite Approach (ccCA) using the resolution of the identity (RI) approximation is employed. The new formulism, denoted 'RI-ccCA,' has marked efficiency in terms of computational time and storage, compared with the ccCA formulism, without the introduction of significant error. Finally, this dissertation reports three separate investigations of the properties of FOOF-like, germanium arsenide, and silicon hydride/halide molecules using high accuracy ab initio methods and the cc-pVnZ basis sets.

Abstract:
! The thesis is exploring art and architecture in Denmark and Czechoslovakia in the period 1947-1957. The main interest was to see how the interwar avant-garde movements such as Functionalism and Surrealism, as well as the legacy of Bauhaus, developed after the WWII. Yet, Functionalism and Surrealism can also be seen not only as mere artistic styles but as two different attitudes towards life, Rational and Romantic respectively. The latter, which is a passionate protest against the status quo, can especially in its revolutionary or utopian dimension serve as a form of engagement free of the simplifying Cold War binaries.

The main purpose of this thesis is to review the position of functionalism, to see if functionalism sufficiently portrays the real aspect of human consciousness. The approach I adopt starts to discuss the possibility of Block’s argument of “absent qualia” (i.e. “china brain” argument.) If it is true that there is certain creature without qualia (e.g. zombies), then functionalism is false. In this paper I assume Block’s distinction of access and phenomenal consciousness before I discuss the possibility of zombies. And I ask if there is a being having access consciousness but with no phenomenal consciousness. What most philosophers agree is that zombies are conceptually possible but not actually true. Here I use the example of blindsight patients to argue if blindsight patients are zombies. Once the blindsight cases support the natural possibility of Partial-Zombies, this will offer a partial proof that Partial-Zombies indeed exist, i.e. Partial-Zombies are not empirical impossible. If so, it is obvious that functionalism do have serious difficulties.

This research is based on “ready-made”, whose function as a daily object is often ignored in the field of fine art. Functionality of the object is removed in order to serve as an intermedium for artistic interpretation, in this case the identification of “design product”. The research aims to return to the objects’ functionality and original form as they were designed, taking part as a subject of ready-made creation in the field of art. The research starts with a look at the evolution of art and design and their historic relations with designed products, noting the influence of functionality of design on life and culture. Secondly, the research goes into discussions of Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, and how ready-mades gradually evolve from “daily objects” to what they are now, as “existed design form” in art and design history. Following this, an investigation on contemporary artists and designers who used ready-made as prime materials for their artworks, analyzing the roles of ready-made and functionality in art and design fields. Eventually, compare many artworks and design products with my works in “existed design form”, “design product”, “functionality” to use in “art”. To sum up, I explore three views of design in contemporary art: (1) The function of objects remains unchanged, while given a change of time and space. (2) In addition to simply mimicking the objects’ form, the function as they were designed is also mimicked as elements for artworks. (3) Imitating the appearance of objects to create visual variations, while maintaining the symbolism of their functions. Through this research, I hope to build a bridge for interactions between art and design.

Abstract:
Title: Against Dualism - Conceptual Art in the Context of Functional-Normative Theory Author: Michaela Brejcha Department: Department of Aesthetics Supervisor: Mgr. Ondřej Dadejík, Ph.D. Abstract: The present dissertation thesis focuses on the problem of theoretical reflection of conceptual art in Anglo American aesthetic discourse in the second half of 20th and the beginning of 21st centuries. It is based on the claim of many conceptual artists and also some theoreticians, which emerged in the nineteen- fifties, that the conceptual art or tendencies have nothing in common with aesthetics or aesthetic theory. This work shows that this presumed discord draws on reduced understanding of what is the aesthetics and, at the same time, this understanding itself is based on the dualistic paradigm, which presents one of the most fundamental frames for our approach to reality. In the context of analysis of selected texts of Anglo American aesthetics, eight particular distinctions of dualism will be defined, which to a great extent contributed to the rejection of aesthetics by conceptual artists, and on the other hand to bad recognition of conceptual art by the aesthetic theory. As an alternative to the dualistic approach in the context of definition of conceptual art, the fluid and dynamic conception of aesthetics...
