Abstract:
The psycho-historical theory of art posits that the functions of an artwork are effects of that artwork selected and reproduced because they fulfill humans’ mental and social needs. To develop this account, I hypothesize a cluster of core functions of environmental art, which encompasses effects such as tracking, broadcasting, emotions manipulation, cooperation, and critical reflection.

Kelly, Anthony. "Functions of the comic in seventeenth-century Dutch art." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446440/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how comic images are used in Dutch Golden Age art. No comprehensive study of this subject exists, in spite of the fact that comic themes and tropes are widely used by Dutch artists, as part of a culture which enjoyed but also valued humour for its rhetorical, instructional and therapeutic utility. Referring to recent scholarly interest in the field of comic culture, and using an interdisciplinary approach combined with iconographic analysis, comic elements in the images are examined in the context of wider comic culture including comedy, farce, rogue literature and joke books, and in relation to the tastes and the ideology of the burgher class, as well as to contemporary notions of wit or geestigheid in art. These investigations are related to major theories of the comic. Particular areas examined are the comic representation of peasants, merry companies, stereotypical characters and situations, and the archetypal relationship of the trickster and the dupe which was the essence of farce. This reveals the strength of traditional tropes and stereotypes involving folly, deception and concealment, modernised to provide a pictorial 'comedy of manners' for the burgher class, who also purchased comic images evoking differentiation and social exclusion. One conclusion is that comic themes in Dutch art should be considered within the long sixteenth century. Another is the value of the application to paintings of a social and anthropological theory of the comic as expression of symbolic social structure, experienced through behaviour codes, which sees it as always significant, being a means of communication within a group or culture, and never value-free even when no didacticism is apparent. This can help to illuminate important art-historical debates such as those involving the relationship between amusement and instruction, meaning and ambiguity, and questions of reception and spectatorship.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay discusses two aspects of the retention of pragmatic text functions in translation. The functionalist approach that was used focuses on achieving congruence between the author’s intended function and the perception of the reader, i.e., the target text’s actual function. The first aim was to examine whether a focus on text functions can be beneficial when translating terminology. The second aim was to investigate if a functionalist approach can be used to assure that all functions are retained for instances where the source text encompasses more than one pragmatic function. For the purposes of this study, two excerpts from Fritz Eichenberg’s art history book The Art of the Print were translated. Individual terms as well as instances where the source text segment contained one than more pragmatic function were then analyzed with the above mentioned aims in mind. It was found that a functionalist approach, in combination with a conceptual approach to terminology, was beneficial when translating terminology. It was also observed that the surrounding co-text aided in the understanding of the author’s concept. In regard to the second aim, it was found that while a functionalist approach assured that the translator was made aware of the existing functions, the translation procedures suggested were too narrow and static to be applicable to all segments.

Geraghty, Ian Craig Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "The reconfigured frame: Various forms & functions of the physical frame in contemporary art." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Art, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43571.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical analysis and reconfiguration of the physical frame in contemporary art. Drawing on historical, theoretical and technical knowledge bases, the thesis characterises the physical frame as the material manifestation of an act (or set of acts) of framing: a constructed ??surplus?? or necessary appendage created to mediate and protect an artwork, connecting it to physical and conceptual contexts in order to facilitate a better understanding of the framed work. The frame is thus depicted as ??work-sensitive??, being formed in response to, and as a direct result of, the work of art. This distinguishes the frame from notions of ??site?? and ??place??, which both connote pre- existing spaces. The physical frame, rather than describing the setting or site to which an artwork is added or contributes to, describes the material build-up which is added to the work. The thesis documents and examines the various ways that contemporary artists employ physical frames to negotiate physical and conceptual space for artworks. This framing perspective is contrary to the prevalent mindset that contemporary artworks - having broken out beyond the picture frame into real space and time - are now frameless. As a result of this research, the physical frame is reconfigured as an open-ended cellular construct, offering up multiple narrative threads. A distinction is made in the thesis between an ??immediate?? frame (a frame immediately attached to an artwork which the viewer stands on the ??outside?? of, such as a picture frame) and an ??extended?? frame (an immersive kind of frame experienced by the viewer from ??within?? the frame, as with a ??circumtextual?? frame). In addition to clarifying and developing upon existing framing terminology, this thesis presents a new taxonomic scale of frames in order to test the hypothesis that ??immediate?? frames can be discussed and categorised according to their level of involvement with their associated artworks. This framing model offers a new filter through which to approach the contemporary artwork, and provides a method, vocabulary and set of questions to dissect and articulate the presence and relevance of a detected frame.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the thesis is to investigate and propose a new design for a contactor platform, both in terms of hardware and embedded software, which incorporates support to implement new state-of-the-art functions. The platform must support a wide range of contactors from basic ones with only core functions to advanced contactors using modern microcontrollers to provide efficient, quick and reliable operation. Further, a significant focus of the thesis is on the interaction between electrical engineering and computer engineering. The electronics needs to interact seamlessly with a microcontroller running a versatile software to provide industry-leading performance. To achieve this, the software and hardware is evaluated with focus to develop an optimal platform. The proposed embedded software uses development techniques rarely used in embedded applications such as UML code generation, compile-time initiation of objects and an object-oriented design, while maintaining the performance of traditional embedded programming. The thesis also provides suggestions to hardware changes to further improve to the contactor’s operation.

Abstract:
State of the art of Helicopter hybrid Propulsion perspectives is presented. As done in the car industry, it can be envisaged replacing thermal energy necessary for helicopter propulsion and sustentation by electrical energy. Improvements on electrical technologies allow proposing electrical systems with attractive power to mass ratio to complement the thermal engine providing the mechanical power necessary for the helicopter propulsion. The differences between automotive functions devoted to hybridization and these possible in the case of a helicopter are explained. The different architectures (on turbine or on helicopter side) are reviewed and examples of possible applications on classical architecture helicopters (with main and antitorque rotors) are given, not only the case of AH light helicopter autorotation management improver successfully tested in 2011. The requirements on the electrical system for industrial applications are reviewed: electrical motor and power electronics, cooling systems, energy storage, resulting in development priorities.

Abstract:
The poster as the genre of graphic arts is a medium where the representation of the human body functions as an important semiotic sign. This genre has also reflected and influenced the most diverse spectrum of artistic, social and political processes. In addition to informative and illustrative content, the inclusion of the human body in the composition of the poster has always had ideological purpose. The aim of this paper is to discuss how political ideology integrates the images of the human body in the posters and how it contradicts the individuals personal feelings and bodily experiences. The case study of two categories of posters from the Soviet period (1950s 1980s) indicates the ideological strategies of sports promotion posters and anti-alcoholism propaganda posters. Political propaganda posters, including sports posters, reveal the body politics of the communist ideology: to create a uniform, disciplined, desexualised, masculine bodies capable of embodying the image of the New Soviet Hero. I suggest that the main artistic tendencies of the so-called harsh or severe style that evolved in Latvian painting at the time can be seen in the sports posters of this period. Anti - alcoholism posters tend to employ a cartoon aesthetic. This tradition has its roots in the mass propaganda of the Russian Revolution (1917), which encouraged the emergence of extreme dichotomies in visual communication. These posters show the human body as a ridiculous and weak object that deserves to be condemned by family members, friends and all society. In this communication programme, alcoholism is not presented as a disease and a global problem of Soviet society, but as a bad choice of individuals. The research is based on archival studies of Soviet posters from the Institute of Art History of the Art Academy of Latvia. Complex research methods have been applied, including iconography, semiotics, contextual and comparative analysis.

Abstract:
<p>The “Arc Majeur” is a curved metal boxes with a square section of 2,25 m culminating about 60 m high. The square section of the arc is likely to produce vortex-induced vibrations in the direction perpendicular to that of the wind. The main arc is therefore equipped with a "Tuned Mass Damper" (TMD).</p><p>In the case of the “Arc Majeur”, the proper functioning of the damper is essential because the amplitudes of vibrations reached under vortex-induced vibrations would cause the arc to break. A monitoring system continuously records the vibrations of both the damper and the structure and transmits alerts in the event of a malfunction.</p><p>A live post processing has been developed to verify that the damper functions as intended, and that the overall vibration amplitude remains small. The results of the first year of monitoring are presented in this paper.</p>

Abstract:
The paper presents six important functions of the documentary film about art. The aesthetic function is highlighted through the use and application of cinematic language, thus transforming the documentary film into a visual creation that captures the audience's attention. The artistic function reinterprets the artworks presented in a creative manner. Educating viewers and illustrating information within the historical, technical, and cultural context of artworks denotes the cognitive function, which is complemented by its formative function. The artistic and aesthetic presentation of artworks as a film gives the documentary about art an important role in promoting and valuing art. The digital age enhances the preservation and treasure-keeping function of films, including documentaries about art. The documentary film about art becomes a multifunctional tool, indispensable for the education, valorization, and preservation of art in the contemporary cultural context.

Butyrina, Maria, and Valentina Ryvlina. MEDIATIZATION OF ART: VIRTUAL MUSEUM AS MASS MEDIA. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11075.

Full text
Abstract:
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic functions. Results / findings and conclusions. The need to be competitive in the information space determines the gradual transformation of socio-cultural institutions into mass media, which is reflected in the content and forms of dialogue with recipients. When cultural institutions begin to function as media, they take on the features of media structures that create a communication environment localized by the functions of communicators and audience expectations. Museums function in such a way that along with the real art space they form a virtual space, which puts the recipients into the reality of the exhibitions based on the principle of immersion. Mediaization of art on the example of virtual museum institutions allows us to talk about: expanding of the perceptual capabilities of the audience; improvement of the exposition function of mediatized museums with the help of Internet technologies; interactivity of museum expositions; providing broad contextual background knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of the content of works of art; the possibility to have a delayed viewing of works of art; absence of thematic, time and space restrictions; possibility of communication between visitors; a huge target audience. Significance. The study of the mediatized forms of communication between museums and visitors as well as the directions of their transformation into media are certainly of interest to the scientific field of “Social Communications”.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Participants: experiment POI animal models; Interventions: human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells; Comparisons: POI animal models without hUCMSC therapy; Outcomes: estrous cycle situation, serum sex hormone level and ovarian follicle count; Studies: randomized controlled animal study; The aim of the review is to figure out whether hUCMSC can recover ovarian function in POI animal models. Condition being studied: Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a syndrome characterized by reduced or absent ovarian function (hypogonadism) and elevated levels of gonadotropins, specifically luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Etiologies of POI are various. Genetic disorders, autoimmune diseases, iatrogenic injuries like chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and infectious diseases all contribute to the development of POI. Main manifestation of POI includes decreased ovarian function and infertility. Patients may suffer from menopausal symptoms, such as increased cardiovascular disease, decreased bone mineral density, vulvovaginal atrophy, psychological distress and so on. Current treatment of POI is limited. HRT mainly ameliorates symptoms while ART can achieve fertility in some patients but faces many challenges in clinical practice because it's hard to get satisfied oocytes. Stem cell therapy is proved to be efficient in recovering organ functions and hUCMSC is one of the easiest cell to obtain. So we think hUCMSC is promising in treating POI.

Cosio-Pascal, Enrique. The Debt Office and the Effective Debt Management Functions: An Institutional and Operational Framework. Inter-American Development Bank, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009210.

Abstract:
The paper aims to be a useful analytical and managerial support tool for the debt practitioners and for the academia. It provides an appropriate approach for developing countries, and offers a detailed and systematic blueprint in how to establishing an efficient Debt Management Office. This paper differentiates from other papers published on the subject at least in two aspects. The first one is the political relevance that is given to the decision making process as far as responsibility for fixing a global macroeconomic public debt management strategy is concerned. The second is that the approach is a functional analysis, that is, there is no need to have a specific structure for the debt office in order to analyse who and where the functions are carried out. The paper gives a clear and well-defined list of tasks for each one of the functions, and this leads to clear and structured functional responsibilities for the implementation of the back, middle and front office working organization structure. This paper is composed of five sections. The first one is an introduction to the concept of Effective Debt Management Functions. The second and the third are the description of the functions: the second for the Executive Functions, which are not necessarily a Debt Management Office (DMO) responsibility, and the third to the Operational Functions, which are the direct DMO responsibilities. The fourth section is devoted to the responsibilities that a DMO can be accountable for, that may vary from country to country. The last section addresses major issues on debt management, stressing the pragmatic analysis that the functional approach provides. There are two Annexes with open-ended lists of tasks for each one of the Effective Debt Management Functions.

Abstract:
Diseases are often the consequence of proteins or protein complexes that are non-functional or that function improperly. An active area of research has focused on the identification of molecules that can interact with defective proteins and restore their function. While 22% percent of human proteins are estimated to be druggable, less than fifteen percent are targeted by FDA-approved drugs, and the vast majority of untargeted proteins are understudied or so-called "dark" proteins. Elucidation of the function of these dark proteins, particularly those in commonly drug-targeted protein families, may offer therapeutic opportunities for many diseases. Reactome is the most comprehensive, open-access pathway knowledgebase covering 2585 pathways and including 14246 reactions, 11088 proteins, 13984 complexes, and 1093 drugs. Placing dark proteins in the context of Reactome pathways provides a framework of reference for these proteins facilitating the generation of hypotheses for experimental biologists to develop targeted experiments, unravel the potential functions of these proteins, and then design drugs to manipulate them. To this end, we have trained a random forest with 106 protein/gene pairwise features collected from multiple resources to predict functional interactions between dark proteins and proteins annotated in Reactome and then developed three scores to measure the interactions between dark proteins and Reactome pathways based on enrichment analysis and fuzzy logic simulations. Literature evidence via manual checking and systematic NLP-based analysis support predicted interacting pathways for dark proteins. To visualize dark proteins in the context of Reactome pathways, we have also developed a new website, idg.reactome.org, by extending the Reactome web application with new features illustrating these proteins together with tissue-specific protein and gene expression levels and drug interactions.

Zhou. L52286 Limit State Function Development for the Application of RBD and Assessment to Onshore Pipelines. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010253.

Abstract:
For pipelines that utilize high design factors, excessive plastic deformation may occur in the hoop direction under internal pressure applied during field hydrostatic testing. Excessive plastic deformation can lead to coating damage and subsequent corrosion. Therefore, a limit state function for excessive plastic deformation was established to address this condition. The limit state function was established as the allowable plastic strain minus the accumulated plastic hoop strain induced by hydrostatic test pressure. The objective of this study was to expand the limit state function library to allow a wider range of conditions and threats to be explicitly considered in the application of RBDA. The new limit state functions developed in this study are applicable to situations involving excessive plastic deformation under hydrostatic testing pressure, restrained thermal expansion, seam-weld defects and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC). The basic assumptions and methodologies used to develop these limit state functions are described in this report. Probabilistic characteristics of the input parameters (including model uncertainties) associated with each limit state function are also summarized based on publicly available literature, studies funded by PRCI and data provided by PRCI members.
