Goldstein, Claudia. Beuckelaer and the Art of Dining. Amsterdam University Press, 2024. https://doi.org/10.5117/9789463727822.

Full text
Abstract:
Sixteenth-century Flemish painter Joachim Beuckelaer produced dozens of large-scale paintings of contemporary working women and men selling, presenting, and preparing a visually stunning array of foodstuffs for the viewer. These were new subjects in Antwerp and even newer in Italy, where elite merchants and nobles like Margaret of Parma displayed them as they were meant to be displayed: in dining rooms and spaces used for entertaining. This study explores the cross-cultural meanings of Beuckelaer’s distinctly Northern European kitchen and market scenes in the context of North Italian dining and food culture. Examining the functions of Beuckelaer’s strange and new subject matter, Goldstein situates his paintings and those of his closest Italian follower, Vincenzo Campi, in the physical space of the dining room, addressing dining practice and the class and gender tensions inherent in a setting that placed both elite and non-elite viewers before life-sized renderings of their employees, and themselves.

Wittingslow, Ryan Mitchell. What Art Does. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2023. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881817770.

Full text
Abstract:
We derive a great deal of cognitive pleasure from asking what artworks mean. And yet, despite the seriousness with which we approach these questions, they all too often rely on theories of art that fail to adequately explain how art conveys meaning. This book proposes a new theory. In contrast to more conventional definitions of art, What Art Does defends the claim that artworks constitute a class of tool. Like other tools, artworks are objects that have functions and that furnish affordances. However, thanks to the particular social and material facts that underpin the creation of artworks, the functions that artworks have and the affordances they furnish are special. It is thanks to these special functions and affordances that artworks obtain their privileged character and status. Because artworks do things that other tools cannot, we take artworks to be meaning-making objects with something to say.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses Article 27 of the ATT. The provision designates the Secretary-General of the UN as the Depositary of the ATT. This is in accord with the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which expressly allows the Chief Administrative Officer of an international organization to be designated as the Depositary of a treaty, and for the designation to be made in the treaty itself. Given the fact that the ATT was negotiated within the UN, it was never in doubt that the Secretary-General of the United Nations would be designated the Depositary. The Depositary carries out functions with respect to the Convention, among others to allow states to sign it, as well as to accept and record instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval, and accession. The chapter concludes with a brief description of these functions.

Limpo, Teresa, and Thierry Olive, eds. Executive Functions and Writing. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198863564.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Executive functions are a set of cognitive processes we use to act on information, manage resources, and plan and monitor our own behaviour, all with the aim of achieving an end goal. These are skills that develop from infancy. While ‘reading’ has been extensively studied in psychology literature, ‘writing’ has been somewhat neglected, despite a lack of capability in this area being linked to poverty and social exclusion. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art review concerning the relationship between executive function skills and writing. It explores its role across the lifespan, addressing all groups of writers, from children and those with learning and language difficulties, to adults and elders. It considers theoretical viewpoints, assessment, and methodological issues, and developmental disorders, and closes with insightful commentary chapters that draw future directions for investigating executive functions.
