The analysis of origin-destination traffic flows may be useful in many contexts of application (e.g., urban planning, tourism economics) and have been commonly studied through the gravity model, which states that flows are proportional to ''masses" of both origin and destination, and inversely proportional to distance between them. Using data on the flow of mobile phone SIM among different aree di censimento, recorded hourly basis for several months and provided by FasterNet in the context of MoSoRe project, in this work we characterize and model the dynamic of such flows over the time in the strongly urbanized and flood-prone area of the Mandolossa (western outskirts of Brescia, northern Italy), with the aim of predicting the traffic flow during flood episodes. Whereas a traditional ”static” mass explanatory variable is represented by residential population (Pop), or by gross domestic product (GDP), here we propose to use a most accurate set of explanatory variables in order to better account for the dynamic over the time. First, we employ a time-varying mass variable represented by the number of city-users by area and by time period, which has been estimated from mobile phone data (provided by TIM) using functional data approach and already adopted to derive crowding maps for flood exposure. Secondly, we include in the model a proper set of factors such as areal and time dummies, and a novel set of indices related to (e.g.) the number and the type of streets, the number of offices, restaurants or cinemas, which may be retrieved from OpenStreetMap. The joint use of these two novel sets of explanatory variables should allow us to obtain a better linear fitting of the gravity model and a better traffic flow prediction for the flood risk evaluation.

The chapter examines the works of Afghanistan's female authors' writings to understand the discursive identity construction concerning the appropriation of relational (i.e., symbolic) space. To pursue this goal, the chapter focuses on four novels by female writers: Nadia Hashimi's Sparks like Stars (2021), Homeira Qaderi's Dancing in the Mosque (2020), Fawzia Koofi's The Favored Daughter (2012), and Atia Abawi's The Secret Sky (2014). Drawing upon Michel Foucault's techniques of discourse analysis, the chapter seeks to delineate the dominant and the contested discourses on how resistance is enumerated and change is initiated by the female characters in the novel. It is argued that throughout the narratives, the relational space functions as an active participant in the construction of women's identities as well as in the exercise of power and the acceptance of truth and knowledge in the society.

After Hagia Sophia was converted into an imperial mosque by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (r. 1451–81), it became a key venue for imperial religious ceremonies. From the sixteenth century until the 1830s, Ottoman sultans customarily performed prayers for the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) at Hagia Sophia. Although sultans eventually departed from this tradition and began attending the Night of Decree prayers at other mosques, such as Nusretiye and later the Hamidiye Mosque at Yıldız, Hagia Sophia remained significant to Istanbulites as a setting for this ceremony. From the 1880s, the court altered the ceremonial decorum at Hagia Sophia, issuing passes for foreign embassy staff and guests to observe from the upper galleries, with officials explaining the rituals. This period saw an increase in non-Muslim spectators, from tens to thousands. This paper examines the transformation of a religious ceremony into a spectacle by conceptualizing the Hagia Sophia as a showpiece monument, distinct in function from other imperial mosques. It argues that the Hagia Sophia, historically used as a political tool, continued to serve this purpose in a different way between the 1880s and 1932.

This introductory essay explains how the authors of this edited volume investigate the emergence of Hagia Sophia as a modern monument for a variety of actors during the long nineteenth century (ca. 1743-1934), a crucial yet understudied period. By adapting the theoretical concept of object biography for the examination of monumental architecture, the volume underscores Hagia Sophia’s multifaceted functions and cultural meanings over time. This introduction offers a brief survey of the building’s history and a discussion of how the monument challenges scholarly epistimologies of time, an issue that is raised by the term “long nineteenth century”. The editors conclude with a reflection on how the recent conversion of Hagia Sophia back into a mosque in 2020 highlights the importance of studying this building’s transformation into a cultural monument and symbol of world heritage, a process that began in the late eighteenth century when Istanbul was under Ottoman rule.

This chapter analyzes how Yemeni American women’s everyday space-making practices in Hamtramck blur the lines between public and private, complicating mainstream modes of organizing space and scrambling the ideological correlates associated with these two discursive realms. The chapter discusses how Yemeni women across generations choreograph the gendering of space within homes, streets, neighborhoods, mosques, and schools, enriching their lives with social, cultural, spiritual, and economic exchanges. The chapter shows how areas in Yemeni homes, such as women’s living rooms, sometimes function as semi-public spaces open to an extended and loosely bounded set of non-kin visitors during times set apart for sociability and religious instruction. The chapter includes a discussion of how women-only spaces in mosques reproduce or echo some features of home-based gender norms. In secondary schools, Yemeni female youth sustain or modify community-based gender separation practices to establish comfortable spaces for themselves in an ethnically and racially mixed context.

Abstract:
This chapter identifies the River Jordan as a major feature of Israeli and Palestinian environmental imaginaries. It argues that the Jordan’s role as a water resource and a contested border gives it crucial material and symbolic functions in imagining the past, present and future of the Israeli and Palestinian nations. The first half examines the meanings of the Jordan to early twentieth-century Zionist ‘pioneers’, including its role in cultivating a sense of home and belonging. The second half identifies representation of the Jordan as dried-up or polluted as a strategy used in recent Palestinian literature to depict Palestinian exile. Texts examined include Moshe Smilansky’s short story ‘Hawaja Nazar’ (1910), Mahmoud Darwish’s poem ‘A River Dies of Thirst’ (2008) and Mourid Barghouti’s memoir I Saw Ramallah (1997).

Abstract:
The architecture of the fortress that first emerged in the Hellenistic Period was determined by the topography just as the city of Amasya. The fortress was built on Mount Harşena whose high slopes in the north drop steeply down towards the Yeşilırmak River. The fortification walls of the fortress were confined in the south by the riverbed that runs east-west to the foot of the mountain. The walls extend from the south upwards over the rocks in a northerly direction until they reach Harşena Fortress (Yukarı Kale, Upper Fortress). The Hellenistic Period fortification walls begin in front of the rock-cut Tombs of the Pontic Kings in the district known as “Kızlar Sarayı” (Maidens’ Palace). The walls along the river date to the Roman Period. The fortress, which consists of three main sections, has been used by many civilizations and has from the start been subject to reconstructions and additions. From the top downwards comes first the Upper Fortress called Harşena Fortress, below that and in front of the rock-cut Tombs of the Pontic Kings is the castle-terrace called Kızlar Sarayı (Maidens’ Palace), and the Aşağı Saray (Lower Palace) is in today’s Hatuniye District. Excavations are supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, Istanbul University Scientific Research Projects Department and the Turkish Historical Society. In the systematic excavations of the Harşena Castle Maidens’ Palace, which have been carried out since 2009, important results have been reached when both the architecture and the finds are evaluated. The finds unearthed in this area, which we define as the kitchen of the palace, where the outbuildings belonging to the Ottoman Palace, whose existence is known in the Maidens’ Palace, also supported our opinion. In addition, it has been observed that it corresponds with the descriptions of the palace in historical sources and travel books. Other important discoveries are the Seljuk Mansion located in the upper castle and the Yıldırım Mosque belonging to the Ottoman period. Again, the first data about these structures mentioned in historical sources and travel books were revealed in our studies. It is seen that there is a social complex in the place we define as the soup kitchen, which consists of a mosque, mansion and storage areas surrounded by a well organized street texture. The Seljuk Mansion probably continued its function as a zawiyah structure in the later periods. As a result, the excavations carried out brought important data to light and contributed to the history of Amasya and especially Amasya in the Turkish Period.
