Okafor, Hyacinth C. "Perceptions of Loss and Grief Experiences within Religious Burial and Funeral." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2013. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1657.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceptions of loss and grief experiences within religious rites and rituals vis-à-vis the context of counseling. Literature indicated the need for a better understanding of grief and loss experiences from bereaved individuals’ perspectives and the context within which loss and grief experiences occur (Dillenburger & Keenan, 2005; Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Participants for this study included 10 purposefully selected Catholic members from two Catholic Church parishes in Nigeria, Africa. All participants had experienced loss and grief, had participated in Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals, and were 21 years or older. The main research question was: How do bereaved individuals perceive their grief experiences within the context of Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals? Data collected to answer the research questions consisted of observations, semi-structured interviews, and documents. A cross-analysis approach was used that identified 63 themes, which were collapsed into 11 major themes. depicted in three areas; bereaved participants’ grief experiences, bereaved participants’ experiences of rites and rituals, and implications for counseling. The findings of this study indicated that loss of a relationship was a dominant preoccupation in grief and grieving process. Additional themes reflected by bereaved individuals’ grief and grieving experiences were; time and nature of death, religious rites and rituals, family and community support, family frictions, financial stressors, positive memories, belief system, finding meaning, ongoing traumatization, and counseling. Overall, the conclusion from this study was that three areas conceptualize loss and grief experiences: bereaved participants’ grief experiences, bereaved participants’ experiences of rites and rituals, and implications for counseling.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the customs and traditions surrounding death and memorialization in the history of Lethbridge, paying particular attention to the public "face" of the practices as observed in newspaper death notices, obituaries, in-memoriams, undertaker advertisements, gravestones and cemeteries. It places Lethbridge rituals within the context of the general paterns of western culture, and others, as described by anthropology, history, archaeology, and art history. Its intent is to understand the effects of certain external influences on the realms of personal choice and individuality, and to observe the extent to which these influences have had an impact on what was once deeply personal family matter.

Abstract:
This prospective descriptive study describes the referral patterns to the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. The study was conducted from 1st July to 31st December 1987 and entailed the collection of all referral letters presented (9288) to the hospital and the analysis of a sample of these letters (4702). The results indicated: * The patients are similar in terms of age and sex to those attending the Outpatients Department except that relatively fewer referred patients are Black. * The private sector, i.e. general practitioners, is the largest referral agency followed by Day Hospitals. * Most patients were ref erred to the Outpatients Department without an appointment. * Of the specialist clinics, the surgical clinics, i.e. Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat Clinics, were utilised the most. * The majority of patients (84,90%) were not admitted. * The contact made by the hospital with referral agents was poor (only in 30,30%). * The quality of information in referral letters was generally poor and did not contribute to patient care. Recommendations are made to the hospital and relevant health authorities.

Childress, Lawrence D., and Andrea D. Clements. "Shifts in Ritual Response to Loss Due to Death: An Assessment of Funeral Service Mourning Trends over Time." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2016. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/7247.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: As the predominant social expression of grief, funerals have been purported to be waning in occurrence and/or transitioning to emergent, less conventional ceremonial forms. In this research, trends regarding the cost, nature (type), and prevalence of funeral services were examined relative to an extant data set from two funeral homes of shared ownership in northeast Tennessee. The purpose was to verify or refute purported change(s) in the frequency and/or ceremonial emphasis of funerals in the study area. Methods: Anonymized, archival data from two funeral homes in northeast Tennessee (N = 2,581), spanning five years (2008-2012), were evaluated for trends over time with respect to two outcome variables: (1) the presence/absence of a funeral, and (2) the degree of ceremonial emphasis. Results: A binary logistic regression model was fit to the data with annualized time bins (2008 -2012) as predictors of the dichotomous outcome variable (presence/absence of a funeral). An omnibus test of the fitted model against that of a constant/intercept-only model was not statistically significant, indicating that time alone (irrespective of covariates) did not reliably predict whether there would be a funeral ceremony or not [chi square (4) = 6.558, p = .161]. Ceremonial emphasis was then regressed on annualized time bins using a multinomial logistic model without covariates. Model fitting information indicated a statistically significant difference between the final model (including the predictors) and the intercept-only model, suggesting that –in the absence of covariates –annualized time bins did reliably predict degree of ceremonial emphasis [chi square (8) = 149.570, p < .001], with an apparent trend toward decreased ceremonial emphasis. With the covariates of geographic location and retail spending included in the model, and using dummy coding to compare the probability of each degree of ceremonial emphasis to all other categories of emphasis combined, subsequent binomial logistic regressions indicated that although some modest degree of incremental change is apparent, weaving together strands of statistical significance does not result in a meaningful overall explanation of how (and/or why) that change may be occurring. Conclusion: These results do not support the proposition that funerals are declining in their frequency of occurrence, but they do indicate some incremental alterations in the ceremonial emphasis of ritual response to death, as influenced by the passage of time (demarcated annually), economic impacts (relative to retail spending), and geographic location. This research highlights the need for additional empirical investigation into factors explaining possible shifts in mourning (e.g., funerals) as well asother aspects of loss response.

Ras, Tasleem. "An audit of geriatric stroke rehabilitation services at a post-acute hospital (Booth Memorial) in urban Cape Town, South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/12604.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes summary.
Booth Memorial Hospital (BMH), situated at the foot of Table Mountain in urban Cape Town, South Africa, is an NGO-run hospital in a Public- Private Partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health. The essential service being offered is sub-acute health care, with state hospitals referring patients needing terminal, rehabilitation or convalescent care for a variety of illnesses. Post-acute stroke rehabilitation forms an integral part of the general service being offered by BMH. This dovetails with the state-run rehabilitation hospital in the sense that younger patients able to undergo intense rehabilitation are sent to the state-run hospital, while BMH generally cares for those patients who may not be able to withstand the rigours of an intense rehabilitation program. In our setting, this means that most of the patients seen at BMH for post-stroke rehabilitation are elderly. The elderly patient who has suffered a stroke is vulnerable in many respects. The most obvious vulnerability refers to the physical, emotional and psychological derangements that follow strokes in this age group. In addition, due to rampant poverty prevalent in the community we serve, social and economic factors place this group of patients at an even greater disadvantage. It is an imperative for social survival and an acceptable quality of life that this group of patients retain as much of their independence and empowerment after the stroke as is possible. The current situation of overflowing old-age homes, increasing prevalence of elder abuse and neglect, and the deficiency of community structures to care for the elderly compel health care providers to ensure that a post-stroke rehabilitation service operates with maximal efficiency, given the paucity of resources endemic in our health system. The above factors provided an impetus for this study. A need arose to assess the quality of the stroke rehabilitation services at BMH, as the starting point to what is hoped will be a continuous Quality Improvement Cycle. An additional factor compelling the examination of the quality of service being offered is that the Geriatric population is underserved in the present health system, competing for scarce resources with other vulnerable groups such as children, Cancer patients, and people living with HIV/AIDS. By focussing on a service that is almost exclusively aimed at the elderly, we hope to be able to advocate for greater resource allocation to this age group, given that receiving good health care is essential to the quality of life of the ageing population. This assessment of the current services looked at the Structure, Process of care and Clinical Outcomes of stroke rehabilitation services being given to patients over the age of 65 years. The findings were evaluated against internationally accepted norms of post-acute stroke care, and are presented in this study.

Mengs, Christoph, and Kristina Tyufekchieva. "Gemeindliches Friedhofswesen im Freistaat Sachsen: Neuer Druck für die kommunalen Haushalte?" Universität Leipzig, 2021. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A74914.

Full text
Abstract:

Tshililo, Takalani Yolanda. "Migrant women's access to public health care services in Makhado, Limpopo: a case of Zimbabwean women." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32369.

Full text
Abstract:
Migrant women are often omitted within the migrant discourse/research, with that in mind, the research study brings to the fore migrant women's experiences when accessing public health care services within underdeveloped communities. The study explored Zimbabwean migrant women's experiences in accessing public health care services in Makhado, a small town based in Limpopo, South Africa which has only two public health care services namely, Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and Louis Trichardt clinic. To conduct this study, ethical clearance was obtained in November 2018 from the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. The qualitative research method was adopted in collecting the data. The study conducted in-depth interviews with five Zimbabwean migrant women who had made use of the two public health care services in Makhado. Field notes, diary entry, an impromptu focus group were used to collect the study data. The sample for the study was purposively selected. The study worked with a total of twelve participants, in-depth interviews with five Zimbabwean women, and a focus group with seven health care workers. The collected data was manually transcribed and was analyzed using the framework analysis. Main themes and sub-themes were extracted from the transcribed interview scripts. The study revealed that migrants accessing the two hospitals in Makhado faced challenges such as language barriers, discrimination, and adverse health personnel attitudes based on the patient's citizenship status. Furthermore, the challenges that nurses are faced within their workplace, which include lack of resources, absenteeism, long working hours and overcrowded public health care services within their workplace contributed towards their negative attitude in assisting patients. As a result, migrants bore the challenges faced by the nurses within the public health care services. Therefore, the migrants reverted to having other alternatives such as traditional healers, churches, connections with nurses working in the hospitals, private hospitals and over the counter medication. However, participants underscored that in order for betterment within the public health care services, the following measures ought to be implemented, these include the introduction of independent centres, an increase of mobile clinics, increased number of interpreters, better working environment for the health personnel within the public health care facilities and intensive education training of the health personnel around the awareness migrant issues when accessing public health care services. Foucault's (1980) theory on power and knowledge, played a significant role in understanding the operational systems of public health care services. It also assisted in understanding how public health care services function, to exclude and control migrant patients, through the introduction of fees and required documentation to access public health care services.

Hammond, John Edward. "The music for Rameau's memorial services : a study and critical edition of the Messe des morts by Jean Gilles, as performed in 1764." Thesis, University of Hull, 2010. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:10425.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on alterations made in 1764 to the Messe des morts by Jean Gilles for performances at memorial services held in Paris to honour Jean-Philippe Rameau. For this commemoration two extracts from Rameau’s opera Castor et Pollux were set to sacred texts and included in the Messe, and a third addition was made, the source of which has been traced to an aria by the Italian composer Domenico Alberti. The suitability of these contrafacta is discussed both from a musical and a liturgical viewpoint. New parts for muffled drums and for orchestral horns were added to the Messe, and the role of the bassoons was expanded. These and other alterations, such as cuts, rhythmic changes and strengthening of parts, are examined by comparing the 1764 version of the Messe with the published critical edition of an earlier version. A review of extant manuscripts reveals that ideas for some of the alterations in 1764 may have originated in an arrangement of the Introit of the Messe, made by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, which was first performed in Paris in November 1750. On this occasion only the Introit was performed, and not the complete work, as previously reported. Discovered with two sets of performing parts for the Messe des morts were parts for a setting of the Dies irae by Louis Homet, suggesting that this piece was performed with Gilles’ composition when required. In an attempt to show how widely the Messe was used in France, an appendix containing details of performances has been compiled from various sources. Part II of the thesis contains the first critical edition of the 1764 version of the Messe des morts, together with a section on aspects of performance.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is very common to talk about or refer to people as “People Living with HIV/AIDS” but never “A Church with Aids”. Responding to HIV/AIDS has earned the JL Zwane Memorial Church this name or rather this label. Members of the congregation, many of them young, were dying and remaining silent, not doing anything, would have meant contributing to the disaster that had struck. Something drastic had to be done to respond to the pandemic or else the whole community would have perished. This was not easy as it meant risking losing those already in the church. To many people, HIV/AIDS was seen as a punishment from God to those who have sinned. For this reason many did not want to have anything to do with People Living with HIV/AIDS. The whole response is driven by the needs of the community i.e. those infected and those affected. This means listening to people tell their stories and then respond accordingly. Listening is the key in the response as the whole response revolves around people and their experiences.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work is founded on the study of three funerary complexes of outlying suburbs located in the capital cities of Mediomatrici (Metz-Divodurum), Nervii (Bagay-Bagacum) and Morini (Thérouanne-Tervanna). Our study is based on a corpus composed of more than 480 funerary structures, which has been amended by the data issued from the other funerary discoveries carried out in these three cities, from the 18th century to nowadays. Based upon that documentation, we propose an analysis of funerary practices in use in the North of Gaul and more particularly in the province of Gallia Belgica and of their evolution in the first three centuries of our area. The first part of this work is related to the organization of the funerary areas in an urban context through the analysis of different parameters: places and settlement dynamic of funerary areas, internal organization and space structuring as well as the mode of distribution of the structures (functional, chronological and social). The following chapters are related to the understanding and interpretation of the different funerary practices and gestures, which may have been observed during the study of the structures of our corpus. To do that, we have tried to reconstruct the different steps of the funerary process and to replace the whole practices in the order in which they took place. First, we took an interest in the data connected with the stage of the body cremation, data observed during the excavation of the funerary pyres, through the examination of the pit structure, the methods of treatment of the body as well as the role and the origin of the grave goods used around the pyre. Then, we moved on to the place of final deposition of the remains by presenting the constituent elements of the grave, the different types of funerary structures we have been confronted with as well as the varied modes of deposition of the bones and their organization within the sepulchral pit. A specific attention has also been given to the steps which are relative to the transfer and to the modes of deposition of the bones of the deceased in the grave as well as the practices and body movements which follow that. Finally, in a last chapter, we have analyzed the different deposits of the funerary goods in order to define as well as possible the different gestures which were pointed out through the archaeological remains, and which were made at the time of the composition of the grave but also throughout the funeral or during the memorial feasts where respects to the deceased were paid. This overall study is based on a detailed catalogue of the tombs which is composed of two volumes (volume 1: Metz “Avenue André Malraux”, volume 2: Bavay “La Fache des Près Aulnoys” and Thérouanne “Les Oblets”) displaying by chronological phases the observations made during the excavation work, the inventory of the grave goods, as well as the results of the studies of animal and human bones rests

Abstract:
Everything comes to an end, and our life is not an exception. At that moment, it is funeral services that handlethe body and organize the funeral, a process that has seen little changes over many centuries. Information asymmetry in the funeral business makes it easy for the service providers to maintain high prices without significant investments in the quality of theirservice. Funeral industry is a technological laggard ripe for disruption. This work-project is a business plan for digital funeral services platform in Latin America, developed for the LITS Adventures, a company that intends to lead the disruption.

Currently, there has not been any related study concerning the influence on the work satisfaction and the morale by military funeral services. In addition, the number of related references is very limited. Therefore, in this essay, method of quantitative research along with qualitative analysis is used to comprehend the satisfaction from funeral services of career soldiers and officers. The correlation between the work satisfaction and the morale is also analyzed. In this essay, some viewpoints are demonstrated as references to enhance military morale. In the part of quantitative research, a purposive sampling method was used to sample career soldiers and officers on a naval base in Taiwan. Each of the 200 subjects was given a questionnaire to fill out and a total of 200 questionnaires were returned. After two incomplete ones were taken out, 198 were valid (198 out of 200). As to the part of the qualitative analysis, a purposive sampling method was used when the data was collected. Five career soldiers and officers (three with experience handling funerals and two without) were interviewed in depth. They provided their personal feelings and suggestions toward the military funeral services. In addition, a professional in funeral services (a mortician) is interviewed. Through discussions on the complicated issues of the services, the study was completed. While analyzing the collected data, I tried to take down every word from the subjects so that the perception and current situation of the subjects could be truly presented. Results from the analysis: 1.Career soldiers and officers were satisfied with the honoring ceremonies and family allowances. 2.Career soldiers and officers in general had negative impressions of civil funeral services. 3.Career soldiers and officers were positive about gaining professional capabilities and job achievement from work. 4.Career soldiers and officers were all positive about the morale in each unit. 5.However, all the subjects agreed that implementing military funeral services could help enhance work satisfaction and morale. Suggestions: 1.The contents and related organizations of military funeral services should be publicized entirely. Thus, the services could be provided to career soldiers and officers at the crucial time when they would be needed. 2.Subsidies and compensations for military funeral services should be increased to adequately assist soldiers, officers and their families through difficult times. 3.The military should establish a service mechanism with the objective being to “Protecting soldiers’ interests”, and assist them in handling funeral issues (such as consultation, evaluation of civil funerary services, as well as price assessment and comparison). 4.The army should pay more attention to the work satisfaction of career soldiers and officers. 5.They should attach importance to their morale as well. 6.Strengthen welfare and services in the military so that the work satisfaction and morale can be enhanced.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to understand the content of existing grief counseling service while funeral directors working for the bereaved family and to provide some reference for establishing the norm pertaining to the ability of grief counseling in the field of funeral service. This study employed ethnographic participant observation as the research method. The researcher entered the real working environment and worked with other funeral directors through out the whole service. The site of the participant observation was a religious hospital, which emphasized their ritual in a Buddhism or, mostly, popular religion style. This study, therefore, focused on the popular religion style as collecting related data. The result of this study showed that the funeral service in Taiwan indeed provided grief counseling in some ways, such as empathic communication, education on the meaning and functions of the ritual, establishing trustworthy relationship, providing a secured and quiet place for the bereaved family to express their grief, etc. However, there is still room to improve grief counseling skill. This study will provide funeral educators important information to conduct their teaching program in order to professionally achieve the revolution goals of funeral service
