Scotece, Tanya E. "Funeral Service Employers' Perceptions of Body Art and Hireability." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6025.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to determine whether there were biases among funeral home and cemetery professionals with regards to hiring mortuary science graduates with tattoos. An anonymous survey including a photograph of either a male or female with various degrees of visible body art, ranging from none to extreme, was sent to 1484 members of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association. The primary methodology used to determine whether biases existed regarding visible body art were a semantic differential and a hireability scale. The survey was designed to gather information related to the following three research questions: 1. What are employers’ perceptions regarding hireability of individuals based on extent of visible body art? 2. Are there differences in the employers’ perceptions regarding visible body art based on the gender of the individuals in the photographs? 3. What are the differences in perceptions regarding visible body art based on respondent age, gender, and their own extent of visible body art? Of the surveys distributed, responses totaled 151. Due to incomplete information, 74 were discarded. The number of surveys used in the analysis was 77. Results indicated no specific biases of employers' perception towards potential hirees with body art. These results were based on multiple categories, including age and gender of respondent, extent of body art of respondent, and respondent position within their companies. Although the responses were neutral and showed no significant bias towards hirees with body art, mortuary science students should be aware of potential biases of the families served by the funeral homes, including age of the deceased and family members, as well as the conservative nature of the funeral profession.

Abstract:
Bereavement, while universal, is experienced and expressed uniquely; it is both ultimate and particular. As the predominant social expression of grief, funerals are purported to be waning and/or transitioning to emergent, less conventional ceremonial forms. In this research, the possible salutary utility of funerals is outlined, and trends relative to the cost, nature (type), and prevalence of funeral services are examined relative to an extant data set from two funeral homes of shared ownership in northeast Tennessee. This data analysis of specific funeral trends in south central Appalachia is juxtaposed against the broader backdrop of current theoretical, clinical, and socio-cultural understandings of bereavement, grief, and mourning.

Abstract:
Introduction: As the predominant social expression of grief, funerals have been purported to be waning in occurrence and/or transitioning to emergent, less conventional ceremonial forms. In this research, trends regarding the cost, nature (type), and prevalence of funeral services were examined relative to an extant data set from two funeral homes of shared ownership in northeast Tennessee. The purpose was to verify or refute purported change(s) in the frequency and/or ceremonial emphasis of funerals in the study area. Methods: Anonymized, archival data from two funeral homes in northeast Tennessee (N = 2,581), spanning five years (2008-2012), were evaluated for trends over time with respect to two outcome variables: (1) the presence/absence of a funeral, and (2) the degree of ceremonial emphasis. Results: A binary logistic regression model was fit to the data with annualized time bins (2008 -2012) as predictors of the dichotomous outcome variable (presence/absence of a funeral). An omnibus test of the fitted model against that of a constant/intercept-only model was not statistically significant, indicating that time alone (irrespective of covariates) did not reliably predict whether there would be a funeral ceremony or not [chi square (4) = 6.558, p = .161]. Ceremonial emphasis was then regressed on annualized time bins using a multinomial logistic model without covariates. Model fitting information indicated a statistically significant difference between the final model (including the predictors) and the intercept-only model, suggesting that –in the absence of covariates –annualized time bins did reliably predict degree of ceremonial emphasis [chi square (8) = 149.570, p < .001], with an apparent trend toward decreased ceremonial emphasis. With the covariates of geographic location and retail spending included in the model, and using dummy coding to compare the probability of each degree of ceremonial emphasis to all other categories of emphasis combined, subsequent binomial logistic regressions indicated that although some modest degree of incremental change is apparent, weaving together strands of statistical significance does not result in a meaningful overall explanation of how (and/or why) that change may be occurring. Conclusion: These results do not support the proposition that funerals are declining in their frequency of occurrence, but they do indicate some incremental alterations in the ceremonial emphasis of ritual response to death, as influenced by the passage of time (demarcated annually), economic impacts (relative to retail spending), and geographic location. This research highlights the need for additional empirical investigation into factors explaining possible shifts in mourning (e.g., funerals) as well asother aspects of loss response.

Letšosa, Rantoa Simon. "A relevant liturgy for the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands / Rantoa Simon Letšosa." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/697.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most important yet most undermined aspects of the Reformed Churches in the resort of Synod Midlands is its liturgy. Little study has been done on liturgy and few Church Councils make liturgy their concern. Consequently most of the Reformed Churches in Midlands are faced with the problem of syncretism, secularism and modernistic trends in the liturgy. All human beings are religious people. All humans beings are believers yet it depends whom and how people worship and in whom or what they believe. People have different cultures and in some instances, as is the case with the African religion, culture and religion are not easily separated. Liturgy has an indispensable task in transforming culture. This study aims at scrutinising the manner of worship in Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands. It is divided into three sections. The first section focuses on basic-theoretical principles, the second on meta-theoretical guidelines and empirical findings and the third on a critical-hermeneutical interaction between the basis-theoretical principles and the meta-theoretical guidelines. This study indicates that the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands need a relevant liturgy that is suitable for the African members but also a liturgy that is not easily influenced by culture and by the world. Liturgy has to shape culture and culture has to be accommodated in the shape that liturgy takes. This does not occur at the same level. The gospel preaches to culture and leads it to repentance. The sermon, however, is presented within a certain culture, context and language. This is where culture fits in and contributes to the shaping of the liturgy. A relevant liturgy for the Reformed Churches in Synod Midlands would be a dynamic liturgy that displays an interactive communicative character. There has to be a dialogue between God and His children. The liturgist should not be an individual standing between God and humans, blocking the dialogue-related character of the liturgy. All members have to be participative and should follow the liturgy. This study therefore calls upon a free liturgy because African people are spontaneous. However this liturgy should also be characterized by the necessary order.

Hutcheon, Robert Alan. "From lamentation to alleluia: An interpretation of the theology of the present-day Byzantine-rite funeral service analyzed through its practical relationship to bereaved persons." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29117.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation's Chapter One focuses on the 'shape' of the Byzantine-rite Funeral Service for Lay-persons (= BF), an ordo whose contents (presented in Greek text with parallel English translation in Appendix I) were effectively canonized by the advent of printed euchologies in the sixteenth century. Amongst western communities of Byzantine-rite Christians (as indeed, increasingly, in Byzantine-rite homelands), this 'traditional' ordo is often abbreviated by the omission or condensation of much of its psalmody and hymnography. Chapter Two prepares for my intended interpretation and analysis of BF's complex 'Text' that incorporates intertwining penitential and resurrectional themes and is composed of the foregoing assemblage of texts, music and ritual. In laying out elements of my own methodology for interpreting and analyzing BF's liturgically-mediated theology, Chapter Two opens by insisting (following a lead from American liturgiologist, Joyce Ann Zimmerman) that BF in its entirety---texts, setting, music, and ritual---can and must be 'read' holistically as a performative 'Text' (with upper-case 'T'), having its own language and 'sign systems'; such an approach accords well with contemporary hermeneutical theories. The first of these readings, namely the interpretive endeavour to uncover BF's 'intended sense,' occupies Chapter Three. Although this operation is relatively time-consuming, its conclusions are straight-forward. BF encompasses a number of sombre 'themes of lamentation' (lament for a mythic 'Paradise Lost'; separation from and farewell to the deceased; impending judgment; and memento mori) that are set alongside other, more hopeful 'themes of celebration' (rest from the cares of life; hope of a future resurrection; and unending life in God's 'Eternal Memory'). In Chapter Four, I prepare for undertaking an analytical 'second reading' of 'BF-as-Text' (in Chapter Five) that will try and justify, from a practical pastoral standpoint the presence in BF of a 'lamentation layer'; the case against BF's detractors is to be strengthened by demonstrating how lamentation, interpreted as theologically justifiable in Chapter Three, is also pastorally essential to BF's 'human adequacy'. Psychologically, the bereaved face the need to try and accomplish their so-called "grief work" (Freud's trauerarbeit ) which dictates that an eventual recovery from bereavement is predicated on overcoming: (1) denial of the reality of a particular death; (2) suppression of thoughts and feelings regarding the deceased; (3) unhealthy clinging to the deceased's presence and memory; and (4) stagnation (a reluctance to invest in new relationships and projects). Sociologically, it can be shown that North American mourners inhabit a society that is dominated by three major distortions (from a Christian perspective) of death's significance: a widespread 'denial of death' (well described by Philippe Aries); an attempted 'taming of death' (through the 'death-awareness' movement); and a 'triumph of death' (manifested by indulgence in risk-taking behaviours and by the advocacy of such practices as euthanasia and assisted suicide). Anthropologically, following the schema proposed by van Gennep's description of life's significant passages, mourners' transition from 'separation' to 'reincorporation' appears especially difficult in societies like ours that no longer accord special status to mourners nor prescribe methods for their passage through the difficult time of death-induced loss. It is out of this milieu of WB that Byzantine-rite mourners encounter the paradoxical 'lamentation-to-Alleluia' paradigm proposed to them by BF, a meeting that I attempt to characterize in Chapter Five. "For they shall be comforted : an examination of the liturgy, usage and adequacy of the funeral service in A New Zealand prayer book (1989) with reference to the grief of the bereaved." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Religious Studies, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8122.

Abstract:
Grief at the death of someone we love is a universal experience although no two people's grief is exactly the same. Lives are changed profoundly by grief, often negatively but sometimes positively. It is the aim of this study to present funerals as a potentially important factor in shaping the outcome of grief. The funeral is presented as having the main function of assisting the bereaved toward a healthy adjustment to the death of a loved one. The person primarily responsible for creating this focus at a funeral is the religious officiant still common at most funerals in New Zealand. The funeral is viewed as being primarily although not solely a 'pastoral office.' The work outlines the background against which the funeral in New Zealand can be viewed and gives an overview of the extensive writing on grief. In order to narrow the focus to manageable proportions I concentrate on the Anglican funeral service as laid out in A New Zealand Prayer Book (1989) and practised by Anglican priests in Christchurch and the surrounding districts. This focus is followed through by interviews with sixteen Anglican priests active in conducting funerals. I discuss their assessment of the funeral's ability to assist with the grief work of the bereaved and how in practical terms they achieve this aim. I quote widely from these interviews examining how different aspects of the funeral can assist with grief in both theory and practice. There are marked differences in the way that Anglican priests conduct funerals and employ the liturgy. Many make additions and omissions to the liturgy while some only use the material provided in the prayer book. The former generally place emphasis on the role of the service in assisting the bereaved with their grief work. The need for alterations and additions in the liturgy is particularly relevant in the case of bereaved with no strong commitment to Christian beliefs and practices who use a Christian officiant, content and structure for the funeral of someone close to them. The existing liturgy needs to be expanded and its structure reworked in order to more fully achieve the aim of assisting with the grief work of all who use the service. This focus by clergy on the personal function of the funeral is essential if the Christian funeral is to become a significant event with a relevance and a worthwhile purpose in our country. Otherwise it will increasingly become an empty tradition lacking in relevance and failing to fulfil its enormous potential.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the policies and procedures created during and after the First World War that provided the foundation for how the United States commemorated its war dead for the next century. Many of the techniques used in modern times date back to the Great War. However, one hundred years earlier, America possessed very few methods or even ideas about how to locate, identify, repatriate, and honor its military personnel that died during foreign conflicts. These ideas were not conceived in the halls of government buildings. On the contrary, concerned citizens originated many of the concepts later codified by the American government. This paper draws extensively upon archival documents, newspapers, and published primary sources to trace the history of America’s burial and repatriation policies, the Army Graves Registration Services, and how American dead came to permanently rest in military cemeteries on the continent of Europe. The unprecedented dilemma of over 80,000 American soldiers buried in France and surrounding countries at the conclusion of the First World War in 1918 propelled the United States to solve many social, political, and military problems that arose over the final disposition of those remains. The solutions to those problems became the foundation for how America would repatriate, honor, and mourn its military dead for the next century. Some of these battles persist even today as the nation tries to grapple with the proper way to commemorate the nation’s participation in the First World War on the eve of the conflict’s centennial.

I studien används fallstudier.

Nyckelord: Begravningsbranschen, Marknadsföring, Marknadsföringsmix, Negativ efterfrågan, Personer, Process, Påtagliga bevis, Påverkan, Tjänster, Word of Mouth

Okafor, Hyacinth C. "Perceptions of Loss and Grief Experiences within Religious Burial and Funeral." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2013. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1657.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceptions of loss and grief experiences within religious rites and rituals vis-à-vis the context of counseling. Literature indicated the need for a better understanding of grief and loss experiences from bereaved individuals’ perspectives and the context within which loss and grief experiences occur (Dillenburger & Keenan, 2005; Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Participants for this study included 10 purposefully selected Catholic members from two Catholic Church parishes in Nigeria, Africa. All participants had experienced loss and grief, had participated in Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals, and were 21 years or older. The main research question was: How do bereaved individuals perceive their grief experiences within the context of Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals? Data collected to answer the research questions consisted of observations, semi-structured interviews, and documents. A cross-analysis approach was used that identified 63 themes, which were collapsed into 11 major themes. depicted in three areas; bereaved participants’ grief experiences, bereaved participants’ experiences of rites and rituals, and implications for counseling. The findings of this study indicated that loss of a relationship was a dominant preoccupation in grief and grieving process. Additional themes reflected by bereaved individuals’ grief and grieving experiences were; time and nature of death, religious rites and rituals, family and community support, family frictions, financial stressors, positive memories, belief system, finding meaning, ongoing traumatization, and counseling. Overall, the conclusion from this study was that three areas conceptualize loss and grief experiences: bereaved participants’ grief experiences, bereaved participants’ experiences of rites and rituals, and implications for counseling.

Abstract:

Abstract:
First ethnography dedicated to a Amerindian slavery system, this doctoral thesis is a contribution to the Amazonist political anthropology and to the anthropology of slavery. It is based on a fieldwork conducted between 2004 and 2011 among the Yuqui people of Bolivian Amazon, who are Tupi-Guarani speaking nomads. They are the last group contacted in the region in the second half of the twentieth century by Evangelist missionaries. « The Eternal Service » is an archeology of an a priori passed institution through the analysis of its representations and practices in the collective memory and everyday life. This study is based on participant observation work carried out during the Yuqui’s peregrination in three different spaces (forest, mission and the city), and on a rich body of archives and documents collected in the field. The central objective is to demonstrate that Yuqui slavery is an endogenous reproductive system of alterity, that became necessary for the construction of the Self as a result of a long process of isolation. Composed of four parts which take the reader from the early stages of the Conquest to the second mandate of the President Evo Morales, this thesis sheds a new light on Amerindian subordination relations, describing a system of domination in which an authoritarian leader’s prestige derives from slaves possession. To understand this servile institution, attention is first paid to the reproductive process and the appropriation of individuals, which is based on an asymmetrical feeding relationship

Morales, Teresa F. "The Last Stone is Just the Beginning: A Rhetorical Biography of Washington National Cathedral." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2013. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_diss/42.

Full text
Abstract:
Washington National Cathedral sits atop Mt. St. Alban’s hill in Washington, D.C. declaring itself the nation’s cathedral and spiritual home for the nation. The idea of a national church serving national purposes was first envisioned by L’Enfant in the District’s original plan. Left aside in the times of nation building, the idea of a national church slumbered until 1893 when a group of Episcopalians petitioned and received a Congressional charter to begin a church and school in Washington, D.C. The first bishop of Washington, Henry Y. Satterlee, began his bishopric with the understanding that this cathedral being built by the Protestant Episcopal Church Foundation was to be a house of prayer for all people. Using Jasinksi’s constructivist orientation to reveal the one hundred year rhetorical history defining what constitutes a “national cathedral” within the narrative paradigm first established by Walter Fisher, this work utilizes a rhetorical biographical approach to uncover the various discourses of those speaking of and about the Cathedral. This biographical approach claims that Washington National Cathedral possesses an ethos that differentiates the national cathedral from the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul even though the two names refer to the same building. The WNC ethos is one that allows a constant “becoming” of a national cathedral, and this ability to “become” allows for a rhetorical voice of the entity we call Washington National Cathedral. Four loci of rhetorical construction weave through this dissertation in the guiding question of how the Cathedral rhetorically created and how it sustains itself as Washington National Cathedral: rhetoric about the Cathedral, the Cathedral as rhetoric, the Cathedral as context, and Cathedral Dean Francis Sayre, Jr. as synecdoche with the Cathedral. This dissertation is divided into eight rhetorical moments of change that take the idea of a national church from L’Enfant’s 1791 plan of the City through the January 2013 announcement allowing same-sex weddings at the Cathedral and Obama’s second inaugural prayer service. The result of this rhetorical exploration is a more nuanced understanding of the place and how it functions in an otherwise secular society for which there is no precedent for the establishment of a national cathedral completely separated from the national government. The narrative strains that wind through Cathedral discourse create a braid of text, context, and moral imperative that ultimately allows for the unique construction of Washington National Cathedral, a construction of what defines “national” created entirely by the Cathedral.

Because of their Chinese background, many Chinese people have preconceived notions of the Christian faith. Many Chinese feel that Christianity and the traditional Chinese belief of heavenly worship and remembering ancestors are contradictory. This contradiction negatively affects or destroys the Chinese desire to worship God. In addition, many do not hold the correct concepts of Christianity. These factors cause Christianity and traditional Confucian beliefs to contradict. Therefore, Chinese ancestry worship is the largest stumbling block to the spread of Christianity. During their contact with the Chinese, many Christian missionaries discovered that Chinese people who don't know Christianity are already against the gospel because of deep rooted bias, as stemming from cultural beliefs, to the point that they are hostile against churches. When someone accepts the gospel, they face opposition from their family. The main reason is because of ancestor worship. When the gospel spread from the west, it combined Western philosophy and Western thought, so that the whole gospel was full of Western ideas. The spread of this Westernized gospel in a country with five thousand years of history faced direct conflict with Chinese culture. Both countries maintained their belief of racial superiority, and thus the Chinese were offended by the way the Western gospel seemed to undermine their practices, namely ancestry worship and funeral practices. Chinese antagonism complicated Christian evangelism. Christian funeral practices clashed with Chinese culture and ideas. The conflict continued as the gospel reached Taiwan. Even though there have been many years of adaptations and changes to Western cultural infiltration, there are still many obstacles to the spread of Christianity. The Northern, Central, and Southern regions of Taiwan each possess rooted Buddhist beliefs - all differing. Not only so, local custom and view of funeral practices; the central idea of ancestry worship; Chinese ideas of life and death; the idea of gods and spirits; and daily horoscopes on food, clothing, shelter, weddings, and funerals all contradict the core values of Christianity. If Christianity wants to effectively spread throughout Taiwan and among Hakka churches, how can it reconcile, combine, and adjust to Taiwanese culture without losing basic Christian values? How can it replace traditional Hakka funeral practices? These are worthy points of discussion.

Abstract In my work as a funeral director I have found that many Catholic Church funeral practices have similarities to Taiwanese customs. This study uses historical material and interviews to investigate and understand Catholic funeral services in Taiwan as they adapt to Taiwan customs and culture. Spanish Catholic missionaries first came to northern Taiwan in 1626. In 1642,after the Dutch occupation, they were arrested and deported to Indonesia. In 1859,over 158 years ago, three Catholic Spanish Dominican missionaries from Amoy on mainland China came to Kaohsiung to establish the Catholic Church. In 1952 Father Joseph McDonald of the Maryknoll Society came to Ching Shui to establish a parish church. The Ching Shui church was built in 1960(the 49th year of the Republic of China). Why would they choose to go to remote villages to preach and get along with the people there? Where do they get the strength to go to a foreign country and help the people there? These priests simply enter into a strange country, learn different languages(Taiwanese,Hakka,Mandarin or Taiwan indigenous),because of God's call, and they learn from the traditional culture of the country. Human relations are essential especially as it affects traditional beliefs and local customs. The Church accompanies people in important aspects of life such as birth, old age, sickness and death. Church people care when others are ill or in danger of death. They will help with the funeral mass arrangements and ceremonies. Chinese custom uses ancestral tablets and has Tomb Sweeping Day (清明節) in April . The Catholic Church has All Souls Day in November to pray for the dead and allows the offering of incense, flowers and fruit which accords with Chinese custom. The purpose of this paper is to develop a service quality measurement scale for the funeral home service industry. Funeral home services play an important role in our society; however it did not receive much attention in academic research regarding how its service quality is able to improve. To fulfill this research purpose, it is crucial for funeral home managers and employees to have a good understanding on what exactly the customers want. In this paper, P-C-P model proposed by Philip and Hazlett (1997) is employed as the conceptual framework. Based on this conceptual framework, the specific expectations of customers in regards to funeral services were firstly surveyed. The critical factors and their relative weights of the service quality were then identified. The subjects participated in this study were recruited from Guatemala City who either had the experiences of using the funeral services or are now working in this industry. The results showed that total of 32 critical factors in six dimensions of funeral home services were identified, which include 10 critical factors in the pivot level, 12 critical factors in the core level, and 10 critical factors in the peripheral level. Also, the results were verified the level of appropriateness on the 32 chosen critical factors. The 32 critical factors had an average score of 81.28, which an 88 could be the highest possible score. Finally, based on the results the P-C-P model main propose is to show that the Pivotal factors have a higher relative weight and was further discussed in the following.

There are currently 3,428 companies legally registered as funeral service provider. Among which those with the capital less than one million dollars make up 79.3%; most of them are small traditional local dealers. Funeral services were originally closed and much complained of. After the joining of large financial group dealers, the industry’s rules of the game have been broken. Entering market with innovating ways of management and high quality services has made enterprise a trend of funeral ritual services. This study intended to investigate when dramatic changes occurred to the industry, how each company should apply its own resources to plan sustainable survival strategies. This study desired to understand the strategies developed by funeral service providers according to their existing resources and abilities and the functional policies matched up with the resources. Finally, it was hoped through interviews to learn the dealers’ perspectives for the current and future industry as well as the development tendency, by which to explore a more complete whole picture of funeral ritual services. By qualitative interview method, the condition of the funeral ritual services was understood in depth. Individual cases were analyzed by the method of strategy type analysis and functional policies proposed by domestic scholar Dah-Hsian Seetoo. Life is accidental while death is inevitable. According to Chinese tradition, the death issue still has many taboos. With the aging and childless social structure and the gradually fading post-war baby boom, people in Taiwan must face this issue. Under the influence of the changes in overall social environment, from the early agricultural society to current industrial and commercial society, the form of family dominated by the early traditional big family transforms to the current core family. With the relevant government’s decrees, the funeral etiquette ceremony is also gradually simplified to funeral etiquette services. During the procedure of the simplification, what are the important elements that still deeply affect the modern funeral services? This study reviewed the related literature of funeral etiquette, found the relevant elements of funeral etiquette services, and discussed the specific elements of consistency through focus group. According to these elements, the hierarchical structure of funeral etiquette services was built. This study used the hierarchical analysis method of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyze the weights of the elements for each facet and criterion of the funeral etiquette service, and obtained the priority weight between each facet and the criterion. The study found that Farewell was the primary factor in the funeral etiquette service in the four assessments, with a weight of 0.409. Remaining body resettlement is the secondary factor, with a weight of 0.203. The third factor is cremation, burial, with a weight of 0.202. Plate establishment, with a weight of 0.186, ranks in the bottom. In the whole funeral etiquette service, the farewell ceremony, a public occasion for the farewell to say goodbye to the relatives and friends, takes the most manpower, materials and suppliers, is the most important factor for the funeral etiquette service.

This study mainly conducts interviews and research analysis on four representative companies of the funeral industry since the government began to encourage people to cremate instead of be buried due to the rapidly growing population after World War II. In the early agriculture society, the Taiwanese lived close and were very tight with the local community. Without any service industries, everything had to be done them-selves with help from the community, including weddings and funerals. In the commer-cial society today, people have become more far apart, the lack of help and support from others has contributed to the development of professional companies. The writer has been in the funeral services industry for many years, and noticing the lack of studies on funeral industry management, started this research. This study categorizes the industry into four groups, comprehensive direct manage-ment and comprehensive indirect management, large etiquette, and traditional etiquette companies. To understand the evolution of the four types of companies formed, this re-search has done market development priorities, management methods, organizational forms, SWOT analysis and Interviews on the views of the future funeral market. In the conclusion, this study predicts that the future funerary industry could develop in three different aspects: 1. Those companies with gained resources will hire more management talent from the top universities to train morticians for the company, and by targeting the whole Chinese world, including Mainland China, can develop more new customer connections through their former customers. They could also partner with columbarium and grave yards. 2. Those companies with partnerships with hospitals should maintain these connec-tions, and reach out to nursery homes and local communities with provide pre-selecting tombs and direct selling-buying services. 3. Due to the history and expertise of the Taiwan funerary industry, smaller companies will turn to the high-profit traditional mortician market. By teaming up, they can compete against other big companies in the industry.

In the past, the services provide by funeral service agencies were not open and transparent to the deceased’s family. The deceased’s family usually had no choice but to accept the services provided by such agencies. In 1994, the funeral service industry started to employ an enterprise-type management and stepped into an era of reformation. As a result, the doubts about rationality, product quality, service and service quality of funeral service consumption were dispelled step by step. In order to understand the effect of the above-mentioned solution, the Study takes a funeral service agency as an example to analyze the major makings for its successful management in the last three and half years. Against the backdrop, the Study takes some 1,027 families serviced by the case company in the past three and half years as its subjects. The study framework comprises three parts: service quality, service marketing and demographic variables, and the five-point Likert scale is employed for measurement and questionnaire design. Moreover, quantitative questionnaires are distributed for research purposes. The survey responses are analyzed by the SPSS10.0 statistical software package, the sample structure is studied by descriptive statistics, and the scale constructs are distinguished by factor analysis, in order to understand potential characteristics of consumers’ demand for funeral services. Additionally, the effect of different demographic variables on service demands is analyzed by statistical variation, and the correlation among the services provided by the case company is analyzed by correlation and regression analysis, in order to understand consumers’ satisfaction with service quality of the case company and the importance consumers attach on service marketing. Furthermore, the Study tries to examine whether the SERVQUAL scale established by PZB is perfectly suitable to consumers of funeral services, in order to set up a service marketing model that caters for consumer’s needs and further becomes a marketing reference for the case company as well as other funeral service agencies. According to the findings, demographic variables don’t have an absolute influence on service quality and service marketing, while service quality is not highly related to service marketing. Besides, after some adjustments, the SERVQUAL scale established by PZB proves to be suitable to research on service quality of funeral service agencies. In addition to maintaining the status quo, the case company should pay great attention to after-sale services and customer relationship management for the sake of sustainable operation.

The previous literature has no or very little knowledge on the funeral business and its criminal behavior in Taiwan. Superstition and the negative image of death and funeral process make it difficult to study this topic. The closure networking in the funeral business is also a boundary for outsiders to understand them. The negligence of government further creates more opportunities for funeral business to commit crime. The thesis was designed to explore the risk factors of the criminal behavior in funeral processes. First, the author interviewed customers who have personally processed their family members’ funerals in the past one year to discover their experiences and interactions with the funeral companies. In addition, a few selected funeral workers and governmental officials were interviewed. Gathering and cross-examining three different kinds of information, the thesis analyzed how and why a funeral has the risk factors to make the crime possible. The results indicated that there were three main criminal behaviors most likely to happen in a funeral process: medical doctors forgerying death certificates, public servants taking bribes, and funeral companies cheating and over-pricing the consumers by providing them second-hand flowers instead of fresh flowers. Four risk factors made forgery death certificates possible: (1) hospitals wanted to avoid the workloads and possible legal responsibility of giving death certificate; (2) most people didn’t know how to apply for the death certificate; (3) funeral companies recommendation for convenience; and (4) the responsible department of the government failed to safeguard it. As to the risk factors of bribery, most people in Taiwan tacitly agreed the bribing behavior because of the superstition and informal cultural norms that a bribe in red bags or “Hong-Bou” could avoid bad lucks from touching or seeing the body. The thesis also found that the flower fraud problem was because the carelessness of customers and the illegal subculture among funeral companies. Several suggestions were recommended to prevent the risk factors: (1) schools could implement “life and death curriculum” into compulsory education to promote a healthier attitude towards death; (2) funeral companies should inform consumers about their rights before signing a contract; (3) government should impose license systems for funeral workers; (4) the public health offices should improve their service on issuing death certificates; (5) consumers should request the service detail lists and receipts from the funeral companies; (6) government could consider translating some funeral service into BOT( Build- Operate- Transfer) model; and (7) government should encourage funeral companies to print a referential price list for fresh flowers, second-hand flowers and rental flowers for consumers to choose.

Abstract In Taiwan, the public used to treat the funeral information as a taboo. As time goes by, Taiwanese people are more willing to discuss more about the funerary industry and its mortician now. People also accept the new concept and make plan for their postmortem process when they are alive. According to the statistics from the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan, people spent NT 50 billion dollar approximately on funerary-related expenditure each year. With the advent of an aging society and the descending trend of birthrate occurred in Taiwan, the demand of the funerary service is significantly growing. The research is based on the conceptual service quality model of (Parasuraman, Zeithaml, Berry) PZB and its SERVQUAL scale. We first conduct a survey on the quality of the funerary service. Then, a statistical data analysis is performed to explore the key performance indices (KPI) that have a significant impact on the quality of funeral service. Finally, the Six Sigma (program with Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) methodology is implemented to improve the overall performance of funeral service. The research uses the S company as an example to demonstrate that the enhancement of service quality and customers’ satisfaction can be achieved by using quality control tools and statistical methods. The research results indicate that the overall arrangement of monumental service site, the respect to customers demand and the enhancement of etiquette service are the Key performance indices. The following are the suggestions proposed to S Corporation. (1) Reduce the inconsistency in service quality as well as the different available resource in monumental sites. (2) Continue to improve the processes in service management and employees’ satisfaction. (3) Enhance the implementation of internal control system to increase its efficiency and effectiveness.
