Harrington, David E. "Markets: Preserving Funeral Markets with Ready-to-Embalm Laws." Journal of Economic Perspectives 21, no. 4 (November 1, 2007): 201–16. http://dx.doi.org/10.1257/jep.21.4.201.

Abstract:
Thirty-nine states currently have ready-to-embalm laws, which typically require that all firms selling any type of funeral service (even those specializing in cremations) have embalming preparation rooms and all funeral directors be trained as embalmers. Ready-to-embalm laws are designed to preserve the status-quo in funeral markets, thereby protecting currently licensed funeral directors from the ravages of competition. These laws attempt to preserve funeral markets as they existed in the mid-twentieth century, markets that centered on traditional funerals sold by small, full-service funeral homes. The economic chemicals needed to preserve the status quo are harsh, leading to higher funeral prices and often poorer-quality services. The empirical evidence suggests that these laws reduce the cremation rate, the market share of Internet casket retailers, the penetration of national chains, and the number of funeral directors who are immigrants. They also appear to substantially increase the retail price of direct cremations and the cost of traditional funerals. Commissions in several states have recently recommended repealing ready-to-embalm laws, arguing that they are anticompetitive. The evidence presented in this paper should make their recommendations harder to ignore.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the service literature by investigating post-consumption evaluation in the context of unwanted services. In particular, it intends to delineate the main characteristics of funeral services. Design/methodology/approach Given the lack of substantive literature on funeral services, a qualitative exploratory design was used from in-depth interviews with ten managers of funeral services companies in Quebec (Canada). Findings The study shows that compared to other traditional services, funeral services are characterized by their strong emotiveness, non-recurrence, irreversibility, uncommonness, high level of symbolism and personalization and emotion control of the service provider. The study also argues that funeral services quality is strongly dependent on funeral houses’ integrated logistics, proximity and integrity. Practical implications Because of consumers’ lack of competency, funeral companies need to guide and educate consumers about the criteria they should use to evaluate the service quality. Because funeral consumers are strongly emotion-driven at the purchase time, funeral services providers should find the right balance of emotions to express. Thus, more staff training is needed. Originality/value Because funeral services are emotionally challenging and deal with grief and distressed clients, the present study contributes in shedding light on service quality assessment in the funeral industry. Although they have some characteristics of traditional services (intangibility, perishability and variability), funeral services are also different in many ways.

Abstract:
In recent years there have been protests at Armistice Day services and at the funeral of Margaret Thatcher, but these events seem insignificant compared to the impact of the ‘funeral picketing’ carried out in the United States by members of the Westboro Baptist Church, principally at the funerals of American forces personnel killed on active service. This has caused considerable distress to family members and wide public outrage. In 2011 the United States Supreme Court held in Snyder v Phelps that the right of freedom of speech of the WBC rendered them immune to claims for damages by mourners affected by their picketing. This article will first consider how English secular and canon law could be used to restrict the practice of funeral picketing and secondly discuss whether current law could provide a remedy for mourners distressed by funeral picketing and other forms of protest at funerals, were they to take place.

Abstract:
The funeral industry has grown rapidly over the years. It is very evident that in the Philippines, many funeral parlors are sprouting all over the country as well funeral insurance policy companies. The funeral industry has taken more major roles in the burial rituals, funeral arrangements, body disposition procedures, last rites, and after care services to attend to the special needs. One of the richest customs in celebrating a funeral event was the Chinese society. Chinese was well known for their custom of following a lot of superstitions. Filipinos also believed in superstitions like the Chinese, but their way of celebrating the funeral rites was different. These customs make managing a funeral event difficult. That is why seeking professional guidance and support is a good idea. The study looks into the comparative study of the availment of the funeral planning management service among Chinese and Filipino to observe the difference and similarities on the level of awareness, interest, the desire and actions of the two different cultures regarding the funeral planning management service. The researcher’s purpose was to make a basis for developing an event strategy that would facilitate the acceptability of the funeral planning management service in the Philippines.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate two customary funerals conducted by the Dane-zaa First Nation of Northeastern British Columbia, known as the Doig River First Nation. Both funerals included a lot of drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire in keeping with the Dane-zaa custom. Still, there was one key distinction between the two rituals. The funeral held in 2019 for Janice Askoty was a hybrid service that included a Christian liturgy and customary rituals. Such a ritual highlighted the conflicts that already existed among community members over faith and belief systems. There were no conflicts throughout the Christian service that was part of Annie Oker's 2020 funeral. In this paper, the researcher use the notion of syncretism and my observations to illustrate how Christian practices have been merged with indigenous cultural practices, symbols, and beliefs to create new blended practices. Simultaneously, the researcher highlight how certain customs (such as drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire) have endured to this day because they have not been altered by outside forces. Finally, the researcher discuss how the history of colonialism continues to show itself in funerary celebrations and how the community members view, confront, and resist it.

Abstract:
In early modern Japan, lawful wife of daimyo lord was regarded as belonging to both the families of husband and her premarital family. This study wanted to examine whether such a dual belonging system of lawful wives of daimyo lords was also expressed in their funerals. In particular, this study focused on whether both the husband family and premarital family played respective roles in funerals of lawful wives, and whether there were some procedural differences in funeral services depending on social statuses of lawful wives. The research objects of this study were the funerals of wives of Harushige NABESHIMA, the lord of Saga Domain. Among their three wives who died, one was his fiancee who was from the family of a branch domain of Saga Domain. And, one of the two lawful wives was from kuge(公家), and the other was from buke(武家). In the funeral of his fiancee, while some officials of Saga Domain attended, the rite was held according to the rules of the family of the deceased fiancee. However, in the cases of funerals of lawful wives, the rites were held following the traditions of the Saga Domain. There was some difference in the degree of involvement of premarital families of lawful wives depending on whether the deceased wife was from kuge or from buke. In the former case, premarital family representatives participated only in the memorial service. But, in the latter case, those representatives visited Saga Domain to see the sick wife before she died and to see her coffin off, not to mention participating in the memorial service. In short, buke was involved in the funeral more actively than kuge. But, it was found that such funerals had been held led by the husband’s family tradition, and that dual belongings of lawful wives did not show much in their funerals.

Technologies are keep evolving and growing where almost all activities and services such as in the area of trading, commerce and education can be completed via online. Unfortunately, the funeral arrangement and handling service is still operating in the same process as it is done by our elderly before. Here, the proposed application will help user handling the funeral a lot faster and easier. I-JenzCare is a platform where the service provider and the user can match with one’s need on the funeral arrangement service. I-JenzCare is a unique idea because no similar application or system had been developed in related on a Muslim funeral handling yet in Malaysia. This study provides new values to the traditional Islamic funeral arrangement services which has been practiced in the Malay community. I-JenzCare which employs analytical hierarchy process (AHP) technique just requires a medium-end smartphone to keep everything on the best user experience standard. In a nutshell, the system is a handy application for those who needs immediate assistance on funeral handling in Malaysia

Changes in our understanding of death and grief in the past decades have produced corresponding changes in funerals-the ritual response to death. Examination of new funeral service orders in a number of mainstream faith communities indicates six common trends that reflect a growing intentional awareness of the psychological and sociological insights into the mourning process. These developments in the understanding of funeral ritual make it a more effective resource for coping with death and bereavement.

Abstract:
Social workers were introduced to funeral homes in China amid the transition and expansion of both the funeral home industry and the social work profession and are proving to play a valuable, though under-researched role in serving not just clients but also communities and funeral home staff. Funeral home social work fills gaps in after-death care and mental health and is distinct from palliative, hospice, end-of-life, and bereavement social work. Based on the experiences of funeral homes that employ social workers, this article argues that this innovation may bring new ideas to bridge some of the service gaps in after-death care in China and globally. This article outlines the support that will be needed from funeral homes, social work service agencies, and educational and research institutes to facilitate further development of funeral home mental health and social services and to promote the professionalization of funeral home social workers in China.

This study discusses consumer loyalty in the use of funeral home services. The theory used in this research is the theory of consumer loyalty, word of mouth theory, promotion theory, and service theory. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative descriptive research approach. The data in this study were obtained from 1 staff member and 5 (five) users of funeral home services. Funeral home services are usually used by Chinese Buddhists, Confucians, Christians and Catholics. Funeral homes don't really do marketing promotions, such as price discounts, advertisements, social media activations, and so on. Initially people know and can use the funeral home services through word of mouth. In addition, the area where they live is also close to the location of the funeral home. After using a funeral home service, they are satisfied with the service provided, so they will use the same funeral home service if needed. Because of the use of more than 1 (one) time, consumers can be said to be loyal or loyal. Consumer loyalty can be seen from their willingness to give recommendations (word of mouth) of funeral homes that they use to others. The conclusion of this study, one form of consumer loyalty is in the form of word of mouth. The location and services provided are some of the considerations underlying the funeral home consumer loyalty in this study. Abstract:
On April 17, 1993 the Turkish President, Turgut Özal, suddenly died, leaving the Turkish nation in a state of shock and mourning. This situation lasted for almost a week, a time full of nationwide, activities in preparation for the final services which eventually were to culminate in the state funeral. It was only after this that Turkish society returned to normal everyday life, to watch its politicians haggling over Özal's political heritage. As outsiders to Turkish society living in Istanbul at that time we became participant observers of this atmosphere of rising collective solemnity. It was the symbolic dimension of the funeral preparations and the final services which principally aroused our interest, and these are, therefore, the main reason and focus of this article. As festivities always have a reference to the self-understanding of a community or a nation, we analyzed those images and signs which reached us through reading newspapers, watching TV, listening to the radio and the people, and through personal participation in the funeral service in Istanbul. Insofar as we conceptualized Özal's funeral as a collective ceremony that both mirrored and created this society's self representation, our focus gradually broadened. Proceeding on the assumption that the comparison of two similar events at different historical moments of a society will allow us to get an insight into the development of a society’s self understanding over time, we have chosen the funerals services for Mustafa Kemal, the founder of the republic, as just such a point of reference. This will give us an insight into the development of Turkey’s great political tradition, or, more precisely, into the changing construction of national identity on the part of the political elite. In choosing the funeral service of Kemal Atatürk as such a point of comparison we do so first of all because until today Turkish state and society have been deeply characterized by and identified with this leader's legacy, and consequently any change can only be measured by taking Kemalism as a point of reference.

Aim. The presented study aims to develop proposals for improving funeral services using modern technologies while preserving traditional burial methods. Tasks. The authors investigate the development of funeral services through the example of St. Petersburg; analyze the laws of the Russian Federation (RF) and St. Petersburg governing the allocation of land plots for cemeteries and approaches to burial; develop proposals for improving funeral services and the use of state property (land plots). Methods. This study uses general scientific methods, structural, functional, institutional, and systems analysis. Results. The major funeral service practices in St. Petersburg are examined. The current laws of the Russian Federation and St. Petersburg pertaining to the allocation of land plots for cemeteries and approaches to burial are analyzed. Proposals for improving funeral services through the example of St. Petersburg and optimizing the use of state property (land plots) are developed. Conclusions. Current trends indicate that the number of places for burial in Russia and St. Petersburg is reducing, forcing public authorities to allocate new territories for funeral services. That said, the study shows that state and municipal property (land plots for burial) can be used more efficiently with modern technologies and certain adjustments to the current legislation. The proposed measures will improve the efficiency of funeral services.

Abstract:
Over millennia, death was the origin of great funerary constructions that have come down to us. These constructions aimed at ensuring eternity and perpetuating memory. Funeral art thus appears not in the service of death, but in the service of memory. In the modern age, funerary constructions do not have the dimensions and grandeur they did in ancient times, but there are still constructions with relevant architectural interest, built to perpetuate the memory of important families. In Conchada Cemetery, located in Coimbra, Portugal, a vast and diverse funeral heritage exists. Possessing various architectural styles, almost all built with limestone from the region, the narrow mausoleums stand out from this heritage. This work presents a study carried out on the architecture and construction of two types of narrow mausoleums, existing in the Conchada Cemetery, both of the Neo-Gothic style: one with an entrance from the front, and another from the back. As it is not possible to present the photographs of the burial vaults, since it would represent an intrusive approach to the families, the authors have resorted to representing them through Indian ink and watercolor illustrations.

Abstract:
Cemetery is one of the space requirements that also needs to be considered in urban management. Because apart from burial activities, burial grounds can also function as urban green open spaces. Private Cemetery Parks (TPBU) currently have not received the attention of stakeholders, especially in urban areas. As a result, many TPBUs are not well organized in terms of management, location, and access to available facilities. South Tangerang City has approximately 150 TPBU whose ownership and management are carried out by social/community institutions. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of private cemetery (TPBU) including management, location, land use, road network, funeral service coverage, funeral facilities, and infrastructure. The research method used is data collection through observation and interviews with grave managers. After that, descriptive analysis was carried out on several criteria, namely location and accessibility, status, and management of the cemetry, and available facilities. The results of this study also explore strategies for TPBU funeral management including the management system, as well as infrastructure that needs to be considered in the management of TPBU funerals in South Tangerang City.

Abstract:
The article considers the phenomenon of the gravestone portrait as a structural element of funerals within the Sarmatyzm culture. It studies the main types of tombstone portraits and the materials on which they were made. The author tells that the tradition of making and fixing tombstone portraits originates from an ancient ritual about the participation of a double of a de- ceased person. It is noted that the tombstone portraits were nailed to the end of the coffin and was directed in such a way that it was visible to all participants of the funeral procession. Special attention was paid to the decoration and deco- ration of the tombstone portrait, and the figures of angels acted as decorations. In this regard, the church service was conducted being focused directly on the tombstone portrait. The conclusion is formulated that the gravestone portrait personified the deceased in the funeral procession.

Abstract:
Funeral services are known to serve multiple functions for bereaved persons. There is also a common, intuitively reasonable assumption of positive associations between engaging in funeral activities and adjustment to bereavement. We examined whether restricting ceremonial cremation arrangements to a minimum has a negative association with grief over time. Bereaved persons in the United Kingdom completed questionnaires 2 to 5 months postloss and again a year later ( N = 233 with complete data; dropout = 11.4%). Neither type nor elaborateness of the cremation service, nor satisfaction with arrangements (typically high), emerged as significantly related to grief; no major subgroup differences (e.g., according to income level) were found. Results suggested that it does not matter to grief whether a more minimalistic or elaborate funeral ceremony was observed. We concluded that the funeral industry represented in this investigation is offering bereaved people the range of choices regarding cremation arrangements to meet their needs. Limits to generalizability are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Physical distancing measures and the restrictions on large group gatherings following the COVID-19 pandemic have left many to consider alternative approaches to commemorating the death of a loved one. Advancements in information technologies and the availability of affordable electronic devices have brought forth the ability to use virtual platforms to host funeral services for those unable to be with their loved ones. The aim of this study was to identify existing and potential online platforms for hosting a virtual funeral, explore the safety considerations of hosting a service during the pandemic and share the experiences of individuals who have previously hosted a virtual service. To conduct the research, an environmental scan was undertaken searching academic, grey literature and online websites. The results showed that there are currently several online platforms made specifically for virtual services and many free public platforms that can be used. Death services must ensure staff who are in direct contact with the deceased have proper Personal Protective Equipment and companies must adhere to regulations regarding group gatherings, screening for symptoms and physical distancing. Some individuals expressed having a positive experience, stating that the virtual service felt more intimate, while others expressed difficulty in navigating the technology, particularly the older adult attendees. Virtual funeral services may prove to be a practical and safer alternative during COVID-19 and may provide some comfort for those facing such challenging times. By examining existing platforms and their use, an opportunity exists to generate recommendations for additional supports, particularly for older adults.

Abstract:
The Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Rome is the national church of Poland, where the funeral ceremonies of Polish rulers were celebrated. After the death of King John III Sobieski, ceremonial symbolic obsequies were held. Carlo Barberini, as cardinal protector of Poland, organized public and expensive ceremonies to properly honour the king’s death. The course of the funeral service and the funeral decoration are known in detail through three contemporary printed reports and an engraving describing every aspect of the ceremony and the decoration of the church in honour of the Polish king. The church was decorated with six painted medallions celebrating important events in the life of King John III Sobieski. The surviving four of the six medallions are now kept at the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In 2018, researcher Giovan Battista Fidanza found documents in the Barberini family archives regarding the cost of the ceremony. According to sources, the artist who made the six funerary oval paintings was Giacomo Wernele, which indicates an Italianization of the name Philip Jakob Wörndle. Currently, the state of preservation of the oval funerary canvases is poor. It is imperative to preserve the paintings in order to save them from destruction and make them available for museum display.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the mediatization of funeral practices and customer relations in a business with human care and contact at its centre: the funeral industry. We analyse the impact of Covid-19 on the use of digital media in a comparative study of the deathcare sector in Australia and Denmark. Using surveys within the national funeral industries, qualitative interviews with funeral directors, and news media archives for 2020–2021, we identify four areas of mediatization: adaptations of specific technologies; interactions with the bereaved; transformations of funeral rites; and communications beyond the funeral service. In conclusion, we suggest that the mediatization process is a negotiation of, on the one hand, the need and growing demand for digital media into a traditions-bound business, and on the other hand, the funeral directors’ wish to care for the bereaved families through tactile, in-person relationships and emotional support.

Abstract:
The marketing of intangible services – particularly of unsought services such as those of the funeral industry – can be said to pose inherently unique challenges to marketers. Because of the unsought nature of funeral services, consumers generally avoid the industry, primarily because the services offered by the funeral industry are associated with death and grief. This article reports on some selected findings of an evaluation of the effectiveness of funeral-home websites of members of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) of South Africa. The focus of this paper is on the user-friendliness of the websites under consideration. A quantitative content analysis of the websites in question was conducted to collect the relevant data. Thefindings indicate that the majority of the websites may be considered satisfactory in terms of their overall ease of use. As well as some recommendations for improvements to the websites, a few suggestions for future research are also provided.

AbstractIn focusing on Michelangelo’s signature, recent scholarship on his “Pietà” in St. Peter’s has separated the sculpture from its spiritual intent. In contrast, this article will consider how the sculpture group spoke to its original religious context, principally as the funerary monument of Michelangelo’s powerful French patron, Cardinal Lagraulas. The Rome “Pietà” was an important part of the funeral rites for the cardinal that mirrors and amplifies the liturgy surrounding death, particularly the hour of vespers. Reconstructing the sculpture’s relationship to its liturgical and funerary ensemble will highlight Michelangelo’s iconographic and artistic ingenuity in the service of religion and his patron.

Abstract:
An important sector of florists' business is sympathy flowers. Although flowers are still a component of the funeral, florists are seeing a decline in their sympathy sales. Do flowers serve a role in the funeral ritual? Surveys of funeral directors, grief therapists, and the recently bereaved were conducted to answer this question.Survey results show that sympathy flowers serve two very different roles in the bereavement process - an emotional role and a functional role. In the emotional role, flowers at the funeral symbolize the care and sympathy people feel towards the survivors. The flowers provide comfort to both the sender and the receiver. Flowers also serve a more functional role, that is, the flowers are noticed in very tangible ways. During the visitation or funeral service the flowers are looked at, touched, smelled, or talked about. The flowers provide a diversion or a starting point for conversation.A better understanding of the role of sympathy flowers in funeral rituals can help florists, funeral directors, and grief therapists better serve their customers or clients.

Abstract:
AbstractPhilip II’s death in September 1598 coincided with the restoration of Habsburg authority in the southern Low Countries after decades of revolt. Local obsequies for the deceased ruler therefore reclaimed ecclesiastical infrastructure and revived urban cohesion. In contrast to previous funerals, the Brussels service did not significantly stage a transfer of power. Instead, by selectively drawing on traces of former ceremonies, particularly Charles V’s 1558 funeral, the ritual overcame the recent upheavals and soothed the anxieties surrounding the cession of sovereignty to the archdukes. Simultaneously, each important urban center also staged its own ceremonial, thereby stressing local privilege.

Abstract:
The “modern” or traditional funeral, as it is known in the funeral industry today, that includes embalming, casket, service, and burial in a cemetery, emerged as a result of four forces in American society: the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, the emergence of a genteel code of conduct as a result of increased wealth in our society, and changing cultural views toward death. While the traditional funeral ritual remains the most popular funeral selection in the United States today, the industry is experiencing changes that are reshaping the death rituals and methods of body disposal. A meta-analysis of relevant news articles from 1987 through 2014 finds that these changes are occurring as a result of two general motivational themes: a Business-Related Motivation and a Consumer-Related Motivation, each with corresponding subthemes.

This research note focuses on an issue that is not often addressed in value chain management: the cremation vs. burial alternative after the death of an individual. Any funeral service is indeed based on a set of material and human elements deployed to design, create and develop the service that a company or organization wishes to offer on the market, according to a level of cost and quality chosen by the client (here, most often, the family). For several years now, work has been done on an ecological approach to the cremation vs. burial alternative, emphasizing the importance of calculating the ecological footprint of each of the two options. The main finding of the research note is to propose elements of reflection to contribute to the debate on the desirable future of the value chains associated with funeral service.

After delivering his incensed-filled eulogy, Father Constantine recalls the circumstances surrounding her immigration to Virginia from Samos, Greece, and life in America with her husband, Lombros, after their arranged marriage in 1924. Among other things, Father Constantine points out that while Samos is known for its beautiful women, Mrs. Zaharias' culinary skills even surpassed her great beauty. He also notes that by all counts their marriage was a successful one, although as was customary at the time, it was arranged. The funeral service ends at Riverview Cemetery, which is wedged between the city's larger white Protestant and black graveyards, with Lombros saying “goodnight” to his wife of 34 years for the last time.

AbstractThe article shows how Swedish reformers – through the ordo for the blessing of the corpse and the funeral – introduced a new focus in relation to the medieval tradition: from the deceased to the living. The reformers rejected the medieval idea of purgatory and refused intercession and the celebration of Mass before funeral. Therefore, the relation between the living and the dead must have suffered and the living would no longer be reminded of those who departed to the same extent as before. Instead, according to the reformers, during the funeral service the living would be reminded of their own condition, their certain death and Christian hope. Sources from late sixteenth century which demonstrate prohibitions of certain customs emphasize that the Swedish Reformation did not mean a sudden break with earlier tradition and custom, but that it was a longue durée.
