The main focus of this research is on the funerary archaeology of the Hafit period (3,200-2,500 BC) in Early Bronze Age eastern Arabia, particularly within the Al-Batinah region of Oman. Notwithstanding the period’s lengthy research history our understanding of Hafit society is still very limited, while despite its importance little archaeological research has been carried out in Al-Batinah. The aim of the thesis is to explore the Batinah's Hafit archaeological dataset within the context of the northern Oman Peninsula and the wider region in order to consolidate our understanding of Hafit soci

Funerary Contexts at the Ancón Necropolis from Final Middle Horizon. Analytical Perspectives and InvestigationThis note deals with the potential analytical strength of a series of funerary contexts from Ancón, attributed to Middle Horizon 4 and excavated during 1946 and 1949 by different teams of Peruvian archaeologists. This suggested analysis is based on an appropiate methodology of the reconstruction of contexts parting from extant documentation and associated objects.<br>En el presente trabajo se expone brevemente las potencialidades de análisis de una muestra de contextos funerarios prove

Rethinking the Middle Horizon: A Case Study at Conchopata, Ayacucho, PerúKnowledge about the past is socially created, in historical contexts that influence how we understand and interpret archaeological information. Consequently, as time change we must be prepared to modify our thinking about prehispanic cultures. The Middle Horizon cultural period and the archaeological site of Conchopata, in Peru's Ayacucho valley, seemed very well understood but recent excavations have revealed unexpected new possibilities.Archaeologists believed that a new religious ideology spread from Tiwanaku initiated

Wari in Palpa and Nasca: Perspectives from Funerary Point of ViewThis paper presents new evidences of Wari presence in the Palpa-Nasca region, on Peru's south coast. On the basis of the study of more than 200 intact mortuary contexts from both Nasca and Wari cultures, patterns in the mortuary customs of the people living in the Palpa and Nasca valleys during the Middle Horizon are described. In order to identify diagnostic changes the principal characteristics of the Nasca and Wari funerary contexts were recorded and compared (based primarily on associations with Loro or Chakipampa ceramic sty

Middle Horizon Textiles: Evidence from Huaca Malena, Asia ValleyArchaeological research was undertaken in 1997 at Huaca Malena in the Asia valley of Peru's south central coast, under the auspices of the Asia Municipal Government. The archaeological complex consists of an Early Intermediate architectural complex that has a huge Middle Horizon Epoch 2B and 3 cemetery intruded into its upper platforms. These intrusive tombs consist of circular pits containing several individuals. Textile wrappings on the bodies reveal a stratified society in which elites possessed extremely fine weavings characte

The excavations in Jauranga revealed a sequence of archaeological contexts distributed over a stratigraphy with a depth of morethan three meters. Within this stratigraphy we found the remains of numerous adobe walls pertaining to structures of a settlement dating to the Middle and Late Paracas periods. Forty nine funerary contexts from different phases of the Paracas culture were embedded in the stratified layers and structural remains. Furthermore, we recorded 31 intrusive burials of the Nasca culture. The stratigraphic analysis of the structural remains in their relation to the associated art

Etruscan art was greatly influenced by Greek art, which is especially apparent in the Etruscan funerary art. A common motif within Greek funerary art is the prothesis, the lying in state, which appears in Etruria during the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. However, the Etruscan scenes differ from the Greek scenes in that they portray a wider flexibility when it comes to gender roles. Women and men are not limited to gestures or positions within the scenes of prothesis. This in turn, along with other factors not discussed in this paper, has led to discussions of a more gender equal Etruscan socie
