In The Stranger, a novel by Albert Camus, and in “Funes the Memorious,” a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, the homodiegetic narrators have a significant effect on the referential aspect of their personal experiences. Chronologically these remembered experiences are positioned before the moment when they are narrated. The act of remembering is thus a form of subsequent narration. In both texts, memory is a project rather than an object because it is recounted and not found. In the sense that it is told, memory is necessarily a creative act and thus not faultless because the story of an experience is not the experience itself. The memories in The Stranger and in “Funes the Memorious” are not reconstituted but narrated. The peculiarity of the two texts lies in the fact that the narrators take an external position when describing their own past, emphasizing the imperfect aspect of the narrators’ memory. With a narratological approach to the texts and a Sartrean interpretation of memory, I study the effects of focalization on the act of remembering. By explaining the relationship between focalization, memory and the narratee, I show that the act of remembering is not a repetition of past events or experiences but rather an inventive process that occurs always in the present. I argue that external focalization is a more authentic way to tell the story of a past experience because it emphasizes the fact that memory is always in the process of being made and therefore uncertain and incomplete even to the individual remembering.

Objetivos: Esta Tesis Doctoral aborda la figura del Catedrático de Derecho Penal, Mariano Ruiz-Funes, en sus múltiples facetas: como político comprometido con la II República y como activista en el gobierno republicano en el exilio, al tiempo que su trayectoria como intelectual y jurista en el exilio. En nuestro trabajo hemos profundizado en su biografía política e intelectual desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar, para intentar valorar el papel de Mariano Ruiz-Funes en el proyecto liberal-democrático de la II República, su quiebra durante la guerra civil y la continuidad en el exilio mexicano. Asimismo, se ha prestado atención a la obra ensayística y jurídica del penalista en el exilio, muestra de su vinculación con las corrientes políticas y de pensamiento más humanitarias en su concepción de la pena de muerte, el delito político, los crímenes de guerra o el genocidio, y reflejo de la huella trascendental del exilio republicano en los países que le dieron refugio. Metodología: Esta investigación, con clara vocación multidisciplinar, ha tenido como eje fundamental el análisis exhaustivo del archivo personal de Mariano Ruiz-Funes, de una gran riqueza y nunca antes trabajado, lo que nos ha permitido realizar u estudio pormenorizado de su obra política y diplomática, pero también de su obra jurídica, pues contamos con los artículos originales mecanografiados y manuscritos de su obra jurídica publicada. Este cruce de disciplinas y riqueza de fuentes se traduce en un trabajo de investigación que hemos abordado desde distintas perspectivas, jurídica, cultural y político-social, algo que no es muy habitual en la historiografía sobre el periodo, máxime al incluir como elemento de análisis histórico la aportación del pensamiento jurídico por medio del análisis de la bibliografía de época generada por Mariano Ruiz-Funes. Esta multiplicidad de perspectivas contribuye, además, a desentrañar, de forma más completa, el periodo de estudio en el que se circunscribe esta investigación (1923-1953) a partir de los distintos contextos que lo conforman, etapa primorriverista, II República, Guerra Civil y exilio, buscando siempre la aportación de Ruiz-Funes al transcurrir de estos procesos históricos a partir de su inquebrantable apuesta por el republicanismo liberal y democrático, tanto en España como en el exilio. Conclusiones: Las conclusiones a las que nos lleva esta investigación son la aportación que Mariano Ruiz-Funes realizó en el proceso de elaboración de la Constitución de 1931, cuyas aportaciones son claves para entender el proceso de modernización llevado a cabo durante el periodo republicano, como la Ley de Congregaciones religiosas, la Reforma Agraria y, ya en plena Guerra Civil, con la responsabilidad en la constitución del aparato judicial de la República en guerra, así como su labor inestimable como encargado de negocios en Varsovia y embajador en Bélgica. La figura de Mariano Ruiz-Funes favorece una heterogénea y diversificada visión del exilio de 1939 en México: examinar su obra, tanto política en la constitución del gobierno republicano en el exilio, como su obra jurídica y ensayística, que constituye una aportación valiosa para de poner en valor lo que este exilio significó el exilio, también, para el país de acogida: en instituciones como La Casa de España (después El Colegio de México) en el caso de Mariano Ruiz-Funes en su campo profesional del Derecho, el Proyecto del Instituto de Estudios Penales y los Cursos de Doctorado en la UNAM. Una de las aportaciones más interesantes y novedosas de esta investigación a los estudios del exilio es la puesta en valor y análisis de la obra escrita de Mariano Ruiz-Funes. Partimos del estudio de las publicaciones puestas en marcha por los exiliados, más trabajadas desde la Literatura y la Filosofía que desde la Historia, centrándonos en la obra ensayística de Mariano Ruiz-Funes en el exilio, en la que el penalista murciano aborda la temática España vista desde fuera, como un país que está oprimido en manos de una dictadura que rechaza el liberalismo y una justicia con garantías, que trastoca y elimina el modelo de lo que había sido la II República, pero lo más interesante de esta faceta, consideramos que es su capacidad de análisis sobre la Europa en guerra y las consecuencias de la guerra, donde podemos ver, claramente, un nexo entre los conceptos políticos y la criminología, especialidad del Derecho en la que Mariano Ruiz-Funes va a destacar como un consumado especialista. Precisamente nuestro trabajo también reivindica el análisis del elemento jurídico para mostrar la importancia del exilio en esta esfera científica, pues constituyó un verdadero motor allá donde fue acogido, mientras que para España supuso la pérdida de una de sus generaciones más prolíficas en todas las disciplinas del Derecho. En el caso de Mariano Ruiz-Funes, profundizamos en su fundamentación del Derecho Internacional Humanitario, pues fue uno de los pioneros en la conceptualización y contenido del delito de genocidio.<br>Objectives: This doctoral thesis addresses the figure of Professor of Criminal Law, Mariano Ruiz-Funes, in its many facets: political commitment to the Second Republic and as an activist in the Republican government in exile, while his intellectual career as a lawyer in exile. In our work we have deepened their political and intellectual biography from a multidisciplinary perspective, to try to assess the role of Mariano Ruiz-Funes in the liberal-democratic project of the Second Republic, its bankruptcy during the civil war and continuity in Mexican exile. It has also paid attention to the legal essays and criminal in exile, shows its relationship to the political currents of thought and humanitarian in his conception of the death penalty, political crime, war crimes or genocide and transcendental reflection of Republican exile footprint in countries gave refuge. Methodology: This research, with a clear multidisciplinary cornerstone had as comprehensive analysis of the personnel file Mariano Ruiz-Funes, of great wealth and never worked, what has allowed us to perform or detailed study of his political and diplomatic but also his legal work, because we have the original articles and typed manuscripts of his legal work published. This cross-disciplinary and richness of sources results in a research paper we have addressed from different perspectives, legal, cultural, political and social, something not very common in the historiography of the period, especially to include as an element of analysis historical contribution of legal thought through analysis of the literature of the period generated by Mariano Ruiz-Funes. This multiplicity of perspectives contributes also to unravel, more fully, the study period in which this research is limited (1923-1953) from the different contexts that shape it, primorriverista stage, II Republic, Civil War and exile, always seeking input from Ruiz-Funes the passing of these historical processes from its unwavering commitment to liberal and democratic republicanism, both in Spain and in exile. Conclusions: The conclusions that this research leads are the contribution Mariano Ruiz-Funes made in the preparation of the 1931 Constitution, whose contributions are key to understanding the process of modernization carried out during the Republican period, and the Law religious congregations and Agrarian Reform, and during the Civil War, with responsibility in the constitution of the judiciary of the Republic at war, and their invaluable work as charge d'affaires in Warsaw and ambassador to Belgium. The figure of Mariano Ruiz-Funes favors a heterogeneous and diversified vision of exile in Mexico 1939: examine his work, both politically in the constitution of republican government in exile, as his legal work and essays, which is a valuable contribution to value what this meant exile exile also to the host country: in institutions such as The House of Spain (after El Colegio de Mexico) in the case of Mariano Ruiz-Funes in his professional field of law, the Project Criminal Studies Institute and doctoral courses at UNAM. One of the most interesting and novel contributions of this research to the study of exile is the enhancement and analysis of the written work of Mariano Ruiz-Funes. We investigated publications launched by the exiles, most worked from the Literature and Philosophy since history, focusing on essays Mariano Ruiz-Funes in exile, in which the criminal approaches the subject Murcia Spain view from outside, as a country that is oppressed in the hands of a dictatorship that rejects liberalism and justice with guarantees, which disrupts and removes the model of what had been the Second Republic, but the most interesting of this facet, we believe that is its ability to analysis of wartime Europe and the consequences of war, we can see clearly a link between political concepts and criminology, law specialty in which Mariano Ruiz-Funes will stand out as an accomplished specialist . Indeed our work also claims legal element analysis to show the importance of exile in this scientific field, because there was a real driver where he was welcomed, while for Spain meant the loss of one of his generations most prolific in all disciplines of Right. In the case of Mariano Ruiz-Funes, elaborate on its foundation of international humanitarian law, as it was one of the pioneers in the concept and content of the crime of genocide.

El artículo busca presentar las reflexiones acerca de la conciencia interna del tiempo de Edmund Husserl, compiladas en las Lecciones de fenomenología de la conciencia del tiempo de 1928, a la luz del retrato que hace Borges del personaje del cuento Funes el memorioso. Intenta mostrar cómo es que en ambos casos están presentes los mismos cuestionamientos acerca de nuestra experiencia del tiempo y de la persistencia de nuestra identidad en la memoria, y cómo ambas concepciones implican una crítica al atomismo moderno y al empirismo radical. Primero se analizan, por un lado, las descripciones fenomenológicas de Husserl acerca de nuestra percepción de los objetos y, principalmente,del concepto de retención, y por el otro, la conciencia entendida como flujo. Luego, a partir de la caracterización que hace Borges de Funes, el personaje del cuento, y del retrato de su memoria y de la manera como experimenta el mundo a través de la percepción de instantes infinitos, se pretende ilustrar la validez de las concepciones husserlianas arriba mencionadas, dando cuenta de que Funes constituye la representación o puesta en escena de un imposible.

Escuela de Salud Pública, 2018.<br>INTRODUCCIÓN: El abordaje del embarazo en la adolescencia requiere de una desagregación del concepto para ofrecer respuestas acordes a cada situación y con una mirada integral que contemple tanto la educación en salud sexual y reproductiva para proporcionar información objetiva e integral acerca de los métodos anticonceptivos, cubrir los vacíos de conocimiento acerca de su uso correcto y los efectos secundarios típicos, para mejorar su comprensión respecto del método y las posibles consecuencias del uso incorrecto.
OBJETIVO: Analizar las características del seguimiento del embarazo, parto y puerperio y tipología familiar en embarazadas adolescentes internadas en el Servicio de Obstetricia del Hospital Regional Domingo Funes de la localidad de Santa María de Punilla, Provincia de Córdoba, Argentina, periodo 2012-2014.
MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: estudio descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo, en adolescentes atendidas en el servicio de Obstetricia del Hospital Regional Domingo Funes de la localidad de Santa María de Punilla, Córdoba, periodo 2012-2014. Fuente de datos: Libro de Partos y formularios CLAP de la institución de mujeres embarazadas consecutivas de hasta 20 años de edad; distribuidas en grupos de mayores y menores de 15 en su primera gestación independiente de la edad actual.
Criterios de Inclusión: Madres adolescentes. Criterios de Exclusión: Serán excluidas del presente estudio todas las madres mayores de 20 años. Todas aquellas que no residan en la localidad de Santa María de Punilla. Variables: Controles prenatales, tipo de parto, métodos anticonceptivos, edad, antecedentes familiares (referidos a la pareja, padres o hermanos), preeclampsia/ eclampsia, antecedentes obstétricos (gestas, paras, abortos).
RESULTADOS: se seleccionaron fichas CLAP de 148 casos (3,1%) <15 años y 109 casos (2,3%) >15 años, conformado un total del 5,4% de los nacimientos del Departamento.
Del total el 28% tuvo gestas previas y el 20% partos previos, 11 casos no llegaron a término. El 79% tuvo 4 o más controles prenatales en las >15 años 76% y en las <15 años 75%. Respecto al aborto alcanzó al 20%. Primer parto: en las mayores 10% y en las menores 12%. Situación de convivencia: 53% en pareja, <15 años 48% y >15 años 56%.
CONCLUSIONES Respecto a la prevalencia de madres adolescentes analizadas del Valle de Punilla, se puede afirmar que el valor hallado en este trabajo concuerda con los publicados por organismos oficiales, tanto a nivel provincial como nacional. El tipo de seguimiento consignado en la ficha CLAP, muestra una realidad a mejorar, dado que casi una cuarta parte de las madres adolescentes analizadas del Valle de Punilla no tuvieron o éstos fueron insuficientes. Finalmente, la situación de convivencia evidenció que más de la mitad de la muestra mantenía una situación estable de pareja, se destaca que dicha situación fue levemente mayor en <15 años.<br>INTRODUCTION: The approach of pregnancy in adolescence requires a disaggregation of the concept to offer answers according to each situation and with a comprehensive view that includes both sexual and reproductive health education to provide objective and comprehensive information about contraceptive methods, covering gaps in knowledge about its correct use and typical side effects, to improve your understanding of the method and the possible consequences of incorrect use. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of pregnancy, delivery, and puerperium follow-up and family typology in pregnant adolescents interned in the Obstetrics Service of the Domingo Funes Regional Hospital in the town of Santa María de Punilla, Province of Córdoba, Argentina, 2012-2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study in adolescents treated at the Obstetrics Department of the Domingo Funes Regional Hospital in the town of Santa María de Punilla, Córdoba, 2012-2014. Data source: Childbirth Book and CLAP forms of the institution of consecutive pregnant women up to 20 years of age; distributed in groups of over and under 15 in their first independent gestation of the current age. Inclusion Criteria: Adolescent mothers. Exclusion Criteria: All mothers over 20 years of age will be excluded from this study. All those who do not reside in the town of Santa María de Punilla. Variables: Prenatal controls, type of delivery, contraceptive methods, age, family history (referred to the couple, parents or siblings), preeclampsia / eclampsia, obstetric history (gestations, paras, abortions). RESULTS: of 8835 live births, CLAP records were selected from 148 cases (3.1%) <15 years and 109 cases (2.3%) >15 years, making up a total of 5.4% of the births of the Department. Of the total, 28% had previous deeds and 20% previous births, 11 cases did not reach term. 79% had 4 or more prenatal controls at >15 years 76% and at <15 years 75%. Regarding abortion, it reached 20%. First delivery: in the highest 10% and in the lowest 12%. Situation of cohabitation: 53% in couples, <15 years 48% and >15 years 56%. CONCLUSIONS: Regarding the prevalence of adolescent mothers analyzed in the Punilla Valley, it can be affirmed that the value found in this study is in agreement with those published by official bodies, both at the provincial and national levels. The type of follow-up recorded in the CLAP file shows a reality to improve, given that almost a quarter of the adolescent mothers analyzed in the Punilla Valley did not have or were insufficient. During the debate over the ratification of the United States-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the Bush Administration argued that implementation of a free trade agreement would help strengthen the nascent democracies in Central America. As a bilateral agreement, CAFTA would not only foment greater trade liberalization by expanding market access and eliminating trade barriers, but also help transform the entire commercial frameworks in Central America and promote economic development. These implications are not just economic – in particular, its provisions on intellectual property and investment rights, government procurement and labor standards affect the political institutions underpinning democracy and rule of law. This thesis assesses the role in which CAFTA has affected democratic institutions in Central America. It employs a methodology known as the Democratic Audit to evaluate consequences to four dimensions of democracy - the electoral processes, open and accountable institutions, civil and political liberties, and civil society. It demonstrates the value of using the Democratic Audit to assess a trade agreement’s political effects with an application to Mexico after NAFTA. Then this work considers the case studies of El Salvador and Costa Rica, the most salient examples of democratic institutional change after CAFTA, by drawing on original research especially into the electoral politics and civil society development in these countries. Ultimately, the thesis argues that the most significant institutional effects of CAFTA have been its role as a political issue, rather than its content, in galvanizing popular opinion and reinvigorating electoral politics and civil society - ironically, not the consequences that the Administration originally had in mind. The research demonstrates that, even if some conclusions cannot be drawn due to the recency of CAFTA, the framework it has employed will be an invaluable tool for assessing future trade agreements.

This thesis examines the degree to which alternative funds deviate from their style-benchmark and how this is related to past performance and fund size, and how it impacts future risk and returns. Additionally the thesis examines how security selection and market timing skills differ across varying degrees of deviation from the benchmark. The thesis uses data for hedge funds, funds of funds, and CTA funds from the Center for International Securities and Derivatives Markets and employs fund???s tracking error relative to their style-benchmark to estimate the level of drift. The style-benchmarks used are the median return for all reporting funds that follow a particular style and funds are assigned a benchmark based on their self-reported style. First, this thesis documents statistically significant differences in the tracking errors of portfolios of funds with the highest tracking error versus funds with the lowest tracking error, implying that some managers drift from their self-reported style-benchmarks. Second, funds??? benchmark-inconsistency is less severe in the case of funds that have a regulatory obligation to disclose their performance, suggesting that the absence of regulation fosters an environment where managers can be more flexible with their investment approach. Third, the tendency to drift from the benchmark is most prevalent amongst funds with superior past performance as well as small funds. Fourth, future total portfolio risk increases as funds display more benchmarkinconsistency, suggesting that managers adopt riskier strategies as they attempt to enhance returns. Fifth, the thesis demonstrates that CTA funds that display drift from their benchmark produce higher absolute and relative returns in subsequent periods regardless of the direction of the general market. In contrast, the findings show for hedge funds and funds of funds, benchmark-inconsistent funds are likely to outperform in bull markets and underperform in bear markets. Finally, this thesis shows that more benchmark-consistent managers have better security selection skill. The main contribution of this thesis is in identifying the group of hedge funds, funds of funds, and CTA funds that are likely to deviate from their self-reported style-benchmark and the risk-return consequences of such deviations. The findings have implications for investors and regulators.

Mestrado em Finanças<br>A crise financeira que abalou profundamente os mercados financeiros veio tornar evidente que algo estava mal. Com ligações profundas ao fenómeno do "subprime" originário do mercado americano e aos movimentos especulativos geradores de constantes subidas dos preços dos ativos transacionados em Bolsa, muitos especialistas relacionaram rapidamente tais movimentos com os "Hedge Funds", identificando-os como os principais agentes responsáveis pela crise que se instalou.
Pelo lado regulamentar, as entidades reguladoras dos mercados financeiros assim como os próprios países, foram tomando medidas no sentido de modificar algumas das regras que permitiram que ela acontecesse. Também os Bancos Centrais "ajudaram" a atenuar os seus impactos injetando quantidades maciças de dinheiro, num processo nunca antes visto.
Cada qual no seu campo tentou suster os impactos mas sobre as causas, pouco foi feito porque os princípios sobre o qual o sistema financeiro funciona não foram ainda tocados. De qualquer forma a intenção dessas autoridades é a de proporcionar ao mercado uma maior transparência sobre todos os instrumentos financeiros (nomeadamente os produtos derivados) que são transacionados em Bolsa.
O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar, a partir dos indicadores conhecidos, os níveis de rendibilidade, risco e performance dos "Hedge Funds" de forma a compreender a sua atratividade. Para isso comparamo-los com os "Mutual Funds".
Concluímos que os "Hedge Funds" avaliados à luz dos indicadores tradicionais apesar de serem mais complexos do que os "Mutual Funds", apresentam melhores resultados em todos os aspetos considerados.<br>The financial crisis that shook financial markets came deeply becomes apparent that something was wrong. With deep connections to the phenomenon of "subprime" originating from the U.S. market and the speculative generators constant rises in asset prices traded on the stock exchange , many experts quickly such movements related to the "Hedge Funds" , identifying them as the main agents responsible by the crisis that has developed .
On the regulatory side, the regulators of the financial markets as well as their own countries were taking steps to modify some of the rules that allowed it to happen. Also the central banks "helped" to mitigate its impact by injecting massive amounts of money, a process never before seen.
Each in his own field but tried to sustain the impacts on the causes, little has been done because the principles on which the financial system works not yet been touched. Anyway the intention of these authorities is to provide the market with greater transparency on all financial instruments (including derivatives) that are traded on the stock exchange.
The objective of this work is to study, from the known indicators, the levels of profitability, risk and performance of the "Hedge Funds" in order to understand its attractiveness. For this we compare them with the "Mutual Funds?.
We conclude that the "Hedge Funds" evaluated against the traditional indicators, although more complex than the "Mutual Funds", show the best results in all aspects considered.

<p>Background</p><p>Out of the different fund categories hedge funds have had the highest development in Sweden since 1994. Swedish investors’ interest in hedge funds doubled from 2005 to 2006. Hedge funds are said to be an investment with a low risk and not being dependent upon business cycle movements. Historically there have been high initial investments, most often over 100 000 SEK, required to invest in hedge funds. This has started to shift towards lower initial investments. This is a reason why hedge funds start to become interesting to private investors and not only to institutional, and wealthy private investors.</p><p>Purpose</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to explore what different investment strategies and sub strategies that are used within Swedish hedge funds. Also specific risks and risk measurements, depending on investment strategy, will be investigated and compared.</p><p>Method</p><p>In order to meet the purpose of this thesis a qualitative approach has been used. A questionnaire, with both closed and open-end questions, was sent to 13 hedge fund managers operating in the Swedish hedge fund market. Afterwards, four semi-structured interviews were conducted. Two of the interviewees are hedge fund managers who also answered the questionnaire. The others were with a person who is a hedge fund analyst and a person working at the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (SFSA).</p><p>Conclusion</p><p>Out of the five different investment strategies investigated the two most widely used in Swedish hedge funds are funds of hedge funds and equity hedge. The sub strategies that are used within the Swedish hedge fund market are those with a focus on low risk. Within Swedish hedge funds there are some specific risks and risk measurements that are useful. Sharpe ratio is best used to compare similar funds. Standard deviation is useful to evaluate each specific hedge fund. How much leverage capital that can be used is decided by SFSA. Yet, the risks depend on the hedge fund manager rather than the investment strategy used. This, due to the fact that the hedge fund managers have an own interest in the hedge fund.</p>

In recent times, the popularity of hedge funds has undoubtedly increased. There are shared opinions on whether hedge funds generate absolute rates of returns and whether they provide a strong alternative investment to mutual funds. This thesis aims to examine whether hedge funds with different investment strategies create absolute returns and if certain investment strategies outperform others. This thesis compares hedge funds risk-adjusted rate of return towards mutual funds, such as mutual funds, to see if certain investment strategies are more lucrative than the corresponding investments in terms of excess returns to corresponding indices. An econometric approach was applied to search for significant differences in risk-adjusted returns of hedge funds in contrast to mutual funds. Our results show that Swedish hedge funds do not generate as high risk-adjusted returns as Swedish mutual funds. In regard to the best performing hedge fund strategy, the results are inconclusive. Also, we do not find any evidence that hedge funds violate the effective market hypothesis.<br>Hedgefonder har den senaste tiden ökat i popularitet. Samtidigt finns det delade meningar huruvida hedgefonder genererar absolutavkastning och om de fungerar som bra alternativ till traditionella fonder. Denna uppsats syftar till att undersöka huruvida hedgefonder skapar absolutavkastning samt om det finns investeringsstrategier som presterar bättre än andra. Denna uppsats jämför hedgefonders riskjusterade avkastning med traditionella fonder, för att på sätt se om en viss investeringsstrategi ar mer lukrativ i termer av överavkastning i förhållande till motsvarande index. Vi har använt ekonometriska metoder för att söka efter statistiskt signifikanta skillnader mellan avkastningen för hedgefonder och traditionella fonder. Våra resultat visar att svenska hedgefonder inte genererar högre risk-justerade avkastningar än svenska aktiefonder. Våra resultat visar inga signifikanta skillnader vad gäller avkastning mellan olika strategier. Slutligen finner vi heller inga bevis för att hedgefonder går emot den effektiva marknadshypotesen

Previous issue date: 2016-03-21<br>The main purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to obtain a hedge fund tail risk measure. Our measure builds on the methodologies proposed by Almeida and Garcia (2015) and Almeida, Ardison, Garcia, and Vicente (2016), which rely in solving dual minimization problems of Cressie Read discrepancy functions in spaces of probability measures. Due to the recently documented robustness of the Hellinger estimator (Kitamura et al., 2013), we adopt within the Cressie Read family, this specific discrepancy as loss function. From this choice, we derive a minimum Hellinger risk-neutral measure that correctly prices an observed panel of hedge fund returns. The estimated risk-neutral measure is used to construct our tail risk measure by pricing synthetic out-of-the-money put options on hedge fund returns of ten specific categories. We provide a detailed description of our methodology, extract the aggregate Tail risk hedge fund factor for Brazilian funds, and as a by product, a set of individual Tail risk factors for each specific hedge fund category.

During recent years many fund managers have merchandised their funds as accounting for “ethical”, “responsible” and “sustainable” criterions during the investment process (the generic term “ESG funds” will be used hereafter). These managers have used this as a marketing tool and claimed that this brings added value to their investors. However, it has been very hard for investors to actually determine if the fund managers have been following these announced “ESG” criterions and strategies. In addition to this there have been a lot of discussions around whether or not funds that incorporate “ESG” criterions during their investment process sacrifice return in order to fulfill their obligations. During March this year Morningstar launched the first independent rating that aims to evaluate how the underlying holdings in fund, i.e. companies in which the fund own shares, manage environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters. By analyzing the underlying holdings from the aspects mentioned above, Morningstar has been able to aggregate this information into a sustainability measure for funds. This new sustainability measure has been named Morningstar Sustainability Rating™, which is a rating for how sustainable a fund is. This thesis address questions regarding how ESG funds, or rather funds that market themselves as ESG funds, tend to have different attributes compared to traditional funds in the Nordic countries Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. The specific attributes that has been examined are relative fund flows, total returns, risk-adjusted ratings and sustainability ratings. The results suggest that ESG funds do not show a difference in Sustainability Ratings compared to traditional funds. Furthermore, it could be verified that ESG funds in some cases generate higher relative fund flows compared to traditional funds. It has also been confirmed that these ESG funds actually outperforms traditional funds from a total return perspective.

The first essay examines the relation between fund performance and stock selection process. I classify mutual funds into two groups according to their distinctive stock selection approaches: tire kickers who rely on fund managers' personal judgment and fundamental analysis to pick stocks, and quant jocks who use computer-based models to select stocks. I examine how the stock selection approach affects mutual fund performance and economies of scale. I document an increasing trend of quantitative techniques used by mutual funds, in addition to some unique characteristics of quant jocks. Quant jocks and tire kickers have similar factor-adjusted alphas, but quant jocks have higher Sharpe ratios. Quant jocks tend to be much smaller than tire kickers. I explore possible explanations for the size difference. I find that although quant jocks can cheaply screen a large universe of stocks, the stocks that quant jocks invest in are smaller and less liquid, which results in higher transaction costs and limited scalability of quantitative investment strategies. The second essay investigates mutual fund managers' private information about future stock returns as revealed in their portfolio holdings. Specifically, we develop three different stock alpha estimators to predict stock returns based on portfolio compositions and past performance of mutual funds. We find that investment strategies based on our stock alpha estimators perform well, when using information on recent fund holdings and fund purchases. This evidence suggests that fund managers' stock selection skills are quite persistent, and vary widely in the cross-section. We also compare our strategies with 12 quantitative investment signals based on market anomalies, and find that our strategies are not subsumed by these quantitative signals. Thus, our stock alpha estimators reflect private skills of active fund managers that are unrelated to known anomalies. Finally, we develop a conditional stock alpha estimator using information on stock characteristics and fund characteristics. Investment strategies based on the conditional stock alphas deliver further improved performance.

My dissertation consists of two essays on mutual funds. The first essay examines the role of extreme positive returns on future fund flows using maximum style-adjusted daily returns (hereafter MAX) over the previous month. My results suggest that there is a positive and significant relation between MAX and future fund flows. The results are robust to controls for fund performance, fund size, age, turnover, fund fees, volatility, and skewness of fund returns. Of particular interest, this relation exits only in retail funds. Moreover, MAX is persistent from one month to the next, but MAX-based investment strategies are associated with lower risk-adjusted returns than investors could have achieved in otherwise similar funds. Overall, my analysis suggests that mutual fund investors are attracted to maximum style-adjusted daily returns, which is in line with the theoretical argument that investors exhibit a preference for lottery-like payoffs. These investors are successful in achieving a lottery-like return profile, but this strategy is costly in terms of expected returns
The second essay studies the effect of recent and long-term mutual fund performance on future fund flows. I document that investors' response to recent performance depends on average long-term performance. In particular, a recent loser fund experiences outflows only if its longer-term performance is also poor. Similarly, recent good performance leads to more inflows only if the fund has also good long-run performance. In contrast, investors ignore recent performance if it provides a signal that conflicts with the longer-term signal. This implies that good fund managers with a longer-term focus will find it easier to attract future inflows than managers with a short-term horizon.

The main aim of Essay 1 is to contribute towards the ongoing debate regarding the shape of the flow-performance relationship in the equity mutual fund industry. Essentially, the question is whether the relationship is linear or non-linear. Whereas Essay 1 addresses the shape of the flow-performance relationship, Essay 3 studies the determinants of its strength. Past performance is a signal that is used by investors when making investment allocation decisions. The main finding of Essay 3 is that the composition of the fund portfolio has an impact on the FPS of the fund. More specifically, a mutual fund manager can decrease flow-performance sensitivity by increasing the total equity portfolio weights of defensive stocks and sensitive stocks, where the former is more effective. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not differing base metals and filler wires used during welding processes contributed to differing amounts of ultrafine particles (UFP) and nanoparticles being emitted during the welding procedure. The study was also conducted to determine UFP and nanoparticle exposure in the breathing zones of the welders as well as the breathing zones of pipefitters and fire watchers, who commonly sit 6ft behind the welding arc. In order to determine if UFP and NP exposures differed with base metal and filler wire, all welding processes utilized the same welding machine for metal inert gas (MIG), the same wire speed, and the same voltages during each welding process. The only variation in welding procedures were cover gases used, base metals, and filler wires.
Measurements gathered during welding procedures were conducted in the breathing zone of the welder and pipefitters consisted of UFP measurements taken by two different condensation particle counters (CPC), which operated in synchrony at the start and cessation of the welding process. NP measurements were taken by a NanoScan Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and were also placed in the breathing zone of the welder. Lastly, particle characterization measurements for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were gathered using a filter attached to a high flow pump, which was placed in the breathing zone of the welder.
According to the results, base metal and filler wire do emit differing amounts of NP and UFP during the welding processes. Carbon steel emits the highest amount of nanoparticles, while stainless steel emits the second highest amount, and inconel emits the least. The results also concluded that welders are exposed to a greater concentration of nanoparticles and UFPs than those experienced by pipefitters who stand 6ft from the welding arc.

Statistical techniques were used in analysing monthly net asset value (NAV), management fee, and Dow Jones Islamic market index (DJIMI), S&P 500 Index, FTSE4Good Global Index, MSCI AC World Index and oil prices include (i) the augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Phillips-Perron (PP) test; (ii) Granger causality; (iii) cointegration, and (iv)the Generalized Method of Moments Regression. Findings of the study demonstrate that oil price did not cause Islamic mutual fund’s performance during the period covered, while Islamic mutual fund’s performance causes oil prices. Since demand and supply equilibrium on oil is unpredictable and oil is considered both as an investment commodity and a fuel, the stock market leads oil prices. Results also show that there is no significant difference between the performance of Islamic mutual funds and those of ethical and conventional mutual funds and between the Islamic mutual funds and the well-known Islamic indices during the whole period or during the bullish or bearish periods.

Abstract With the ever-increasing complexity of financial markets and financial products, many investors now choose to benefit from a manager’s expertise by investing in a fund. This fueled a rapid growth of the fund industry over the past decades, and the recent emergence of complex derivatives products written on underlying funds. The diversity (hedge funds, mutual funds, funds of funds, managed accounts…) and the particularities (liquidity, specific risks) of funds call for adapted models and suited risk management. This thesis aims at understanding the issues and difficulties met when dealing with such products. In particular, we will deal in a great extent with CPPI (Constant Proportion Portfolio Insurance) structures written on funds, which combine the specificities of funds with particularities of such structures. Correctly assessing the corresponding market risks is a challenging issue, and is the subject of many investigations.

Hedge funds are private investment funds characterized by unconventional strategies. This thesis employed multi-factor CAPM to evaluate the performance, or manager skill of hedge funds investment segments by using CSFB/Tremont Hedge Fund Indices from January 1994 to September 2005. The performance evaluation is based on the concept of ¡°Jansen¡¯s alpha¡±, which is estimated by applying Generalized Method of Moment. The finding is that hedge funds industry in general displayed the ability to outperform market proxy. Global Macro shows the strongest manager skill, followed by Event Driven, Equity Market Neutral and Long/Short Equity. This thesis also investigates the consistency of hedge funds performance over market environment. It was discovered that the hedge funds industry in general and all the sub-category investment segments except Convertibly Arbitrage, Emerging Market and Fix income Arbitrage displayed the ability to cushion the impact of financial shocks.

Along with the investment funds markets development new types of risks and uncertainties appear. These developments clearly affect the future expansion of investment funds markets; it is valuable to find new ways of measuring the efficiency of investment funds markets for investment funds management companies, and also to identify the better performance possibilities for investors choosing portfolios of investment funds. Evaluation of the investment funds markets efficiency is a complex problem that could be treated as important tenor for further development of economic science. There is a necessity to create a theoretical model that could cover dual positions of investment funds markets participants: investment funds management companies and investors. La intervención preprofesional se realizo en la misma en el año 2018, teniendo como principal objetivo, conocer cómo era la participación de las personas mayores en el mismo.
Luego de diversas estrategias de intervención, a partir de entrevistas, observaciones, se planificaron talleres para conocer la noción de participación que prevalecía en ellos, y que grado de interés tenían en ser protagonistas del centro.
A partir de ello se construyo el objeto de intervención, siendo la participación de las personas mayores en la gestión del centro de jubilados.
Por medio de jornadas de intercambio de experiencias con los centros de la ciudad, se sacaron algunas conclusiones, tales como, participación y protagonismo, difieren.
El acompañamiento y asesoramiento son esenciales en los centros de jubilados, tender redes aporta a fortalecerse como comisión y conocer diversas vías de acceso a los beneficios. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la variación en los gastos asociados al consumo de medicamentos en la patología prevalente, debido a la ampliación de la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) comparando los años 2009 (4 camas) y 2011 (11 camas). Para ello se llevó a cabo un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal en la UTI del Hospital Domingo Funes de la provincia de Córdoba - Argentina. Se realizó un análisis comparativo del consumo de medicamentos en el período en estudio, en base al correspondiente protocolo de actuación clínica vigente en el hospital. Las patologías cardíacas representaron el mayor porcentaje de pacientes atendidos en la UTI, tanto para el año 2009 como para el 2011, determinándose como prevalente la cardiopatía isquémica. La ampliación de la UTI significó un incremento aproximado al 70 % del gasto en medicamentos para la patología prevalente impactando directamente en el presupuesto destinado a la División Farmacia de la institución. Con el aumento en la cantidad de camas, el número de pacientes anuales en UTI se incrementó entre un 90 % y 120 %, tanto en el total de pacientes atendidos como en el grupo con patologías cardiovasculares, respectivamente.

introducción: Las enfermedades no transmisibles (ENT) representan en la
actualidad la mayor carga de enfermedad en Argentina y el mundo, y son
causantes del 80% de las muertes en el país. La población cordobesa adoptó
hábitos alimentarios y estilos de vida que fueron considerados factores de riesgo
de ENT. Resulta de gran valor analizar la asociación de los hábitos alimentarios
desde un enfoque de patrones y el estatus de riesgo de ENT.
Objetivo: Valorar la asociación entre patrones dietarios característicos de Deán
Funes y la prevalencia de un estatus de riesgo de ENT en la región estudiada,
durante el año 2017.
Metodología: Estudio epidemiológico de base poblacional no experimental, con
diseño transversal, de tipo correlacional-causal, conformado por 125 personas
adultas residentes en Deán Funes. Se valoraron medidas antropométricas,
características sociodemográficas, actividad física e ingesta alimentaria mediante
una encuesta cuali-cuantitativa. Se realizaron análisis descriptivos, de asociación y
estimaciones de riesgo mediante modelos de regresión logística múltiple.
Resultados: Los patrones identificados fueron el Tradicional Pampeano, Proteico y
Graso Saturado, Prudente y Bebidas Hipercalóricas. El 56,8% de la muestra
estudiada tuvo un riesgo aumentado de ocurrencia de ENT. Se observó asociación
significativa entre el efecto protector del Patrón Prudente sobre el riesgo de
desarrollo de ENT con respecto a la edad (OR=1,087; IC=95% [1,039 - 1,138]).
Conclusión: Los resultados no mostraron evidencia suficiente para aceptar la
hipótesis planteada. El escore de riesgo para el desarrollo de ENT demostró
asociación significativa con la edad, el nivel socio-económico y el Patrón
alimentario denominado Prudente.

Resumen Introducción: Un estilo de vida saludable desde la infancia promueve el crecimiento y desarrollo y es una herramienta fundamental para la prevención de diversas patologías. En este sentido, estudiar la ingesta alimentaria en términos de su grado de procesamiento constituye un medio para evaluar la calidad de la alimentación de niños y niñas. Objetivo: Analizar el consumo de alimentos según su grado de procesamiento en niños y niñas escolares de 9 a 12 años de las localidades de Deán Funes, Villa María y Córdoba, comparando según lugar de residencia y tipo de gestión escolar, durante 2016-2018. Metodología: Estudio de tipo correlacional, observacional y transversal con una muestra de 480 escolares de instituciones privadas y estatales de las localidades mencionadas. Se indagó la ingesta alimentaria mediante un cuestionario validado, para la elaboración del Escore del Grado de Procesamiento de la Dieta (EGPD). Para eso se crearon tres grupos de alimentos (alimentos e ingredientes mínimamente procesados, AP y AUP) categorizando su porcentaje de aporte energético por terciles y asignandole un puntaje a cada categoría. La sumatoria del puntaje total para cada individuo constituye el EGPD que muestra mayor procesamiento de la dieta a mayores puntajes. Se aplicó el Test de Chi Cuadrado y de correlación de Pearson para analizar la asociación entre las variables de interés, la prueba ANOVA, el test T de diferencia de medias y proporciones para comparar las variables numéricas entre los diferentes grupos estudiados. Resultados: En base al EGPD, se observó una dieta más procesada en los escolares de Deán Funes, así como en escolares de gestión privada. Se evidenció, que el grupo AUP aporto 1052,65 kcal (35,39% del VET), triplicando así las recomendaciones de consumo. Asimismo, se observaron correlaciones positivas entre la ingesta de AUP y las calorías diarias, azúcares agregados, sodio, grasas totales y saturadas (p<0,001). Conclusiones: Se expone la necesidad del abordaje integral de la alimentación en escolares y sus determinantes en diferentes regiones, para adaptar la planificación y desarrollo de estrategias orientadas a la prevención de enfermedades y promoción de salud considerando las particularidades de cada grupo. The author adopted stationary sequence and unit root test of non-stationary method, Johansen cointegration test, Vector Autoregression mode (VAR), and Granger causality test to examine whether there are long-run equilibrium relationships between variable, to analyze the adjustment of short-term imbalance and to discuss the causal relationship between variables. The main empirical results of this study show as followings:
1. From the trend chart, we found out that global high yield bond fund index, global equity fund index and global bond funds index was a short term correction within a downtrend during financial crisis in the U.S., besides that, the trends of these three indexes are upward trends. We also found out that during dotcom bubble deflated and subprime mortgage crisis in the U.S., the index changed dramatically as it could be seen in the global equity fund index trend chart. This has indirectly shows the relationships between significant changes in macroeconomics and global equity fund index, showing that world economic factors has information advantages over global high yield bond fund index, global equity fund index and global bond fund index. Therefore, they can be the leading indicator for further observation for financial changes.
2. After analyzing with Granger causality test, we can found out that it had mutual influence between the changes of global bond fund index and global high yield bond fund index. However, the changes between global high yield bond fund index, global equity fund index and global bond funds index were all independent. Moreover, the changes of global equity fund index and global bond funds index and global economic events had influence on global high yield bond fund index.
3. From the results of Vector Autoregression mode (VAR) and Analysis Of Variation , it showed that the variables of global high yield bond fund index and global bond fund index have influence on each other and have negative relationship. The influence between these three index are not significant.
The impulse response analysis shows that (1) when there’s an impulse happens in global bond fund index, there will have an inverse relationship between it and global equity fund index and global high yield bond fund index; (2) when there’s an impulse happens in global high yield bond fund index, there will have a positive relationship between this index and global bond fund index, and it will have an inverse relationship between global equity find index; (3) when there’s an impulse happens in global bond fund index, it will have a positive correlation between global bond fund index and global high yield bond fund index.

Especially, the high-yield bond funds become the primary choice of all financial products to investors. In this research, based on portfolio monthly return of sampled high-yield bond funds and stock funds, we evaluate the performance of those funds by Sharpe ratio and information ratio. By the method of descriptive statistics, t-test and non-parametric test, the portfolio performance of investment between the domestic high-yield bonds funds and stock funds is further investigated.
The results showed that:
From descriptive statistics and information-ratio, the return of high yield bond funds is better and the risk is lower during that period. However, we do not find statistically significant difference between Sharpe ratio of high yield bond funds and stock funds.
