Fungal tracheobronchitis caused by Aspergillus and Candida spp. is a recognized complication after lung transplantation, but knowledge of the incidence of Candida tracheobronchitis is lacking. The diagnosis relies on fungal cultures in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), but cultures have low specificity. We aimed to evaluate the one-year incidence of fungal tracheobronchitis after lung transplantation and to assess the utility of diagnostic markers in serum and BALF to discriminate fungal tracheobronchitis from colonization. Ninety-seven consecutively included adult lung-transplant recipient

Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of and treatment outcomes for orbital apex lesions according to their pathological diagnosis and identify clinical characteristics that could aid in their differential diagnosis. Design Retrospective analysis design was used for this study. Setting The study was conducted in a single tertiary institution. Participants Patients with pathologically confirmed lesions centered in the orbital apex who were admitted between January 2011 and December 2015. Among the emerging threats in global health, fungal pathogens stand out as some of the most important, causing over 1.6 million deaths annually and destroying a third of all food crops each year, exacerbating food insecurity and economic losses. Climate change further amplifies the threat by enabling pathogenic fungi to survive at mammalian temperatures, increasing risks of zoonotic transmission and antifungal resistance. In this context, interdisciplinary research, particularly the One Health approach, is crucial for understanding the evolution of fungal resistance and improving diagnostic an

Generally speaking, in pediatrics the patients mostly affected by fungal infections are hematological patients, followed by those with solid tumors, and transplant recipients. Candida infections generally occur just after birth, whereas Aspergillus infections are age-related, and increase their incidence with age. However, among infections, the incidence of bacteremias are still greater than that of mycoses. In pediatrics, in Italy the immunocompromised patients – thus particularly susceptible to fungal infections – are mainly those with severe combined immunodeficiency, chronic mucocutaneous

Abstract Introduction/Objective When exposed to antibiotics or a host immune response, Gram-negative bacilli grow with inhibited septation producing long continuous cells; a phenomenon known as filamentation. Methods/Case Report We present a case of a 68-year-old man with quadriplegia, which was caused by the right vertebral artery dissection and subarachnoid hemorrhage requiring an emergent posterior inferior cerebellar artery direct bypass surgery. Lung lower lobe infiltrates were noted 3 days after the surgery. A bronchial wash culture was negative for growth, and a sputum specimen grew Ser

Fungal rhinitis is uncommon in the cat and cases of nasal aspergillosis–penicilliosis have been rarely reported. Signs of fungal rhinitis include epistaxis, sneezing, mucopurulent nasal discharge and exophthalmous. Brachycephalic feline breeds seem to be at increased risk for development of nasal aspergillosis–penicilliosis. Computed tomography (CT) imaging and rhinoscopy are useful in assessing the extent of the disease and in obtaining diagnostic samples. Fungal culture may lead to false negative or positive results and must be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests. Serological tes
