Abstract:
<em>In many parts of the world, key water catchments&nbsp;and watershed ecosystems have been degraded by successive waves of anthropogenic activities, thus requiring rehabilitation. One of the drawbacks of rehabilitation of degraded catchments is the lack of information about species suitable to local conditions. This study was designed to evaluate the catchment afforestation/reforestation potentials of three native tree seedlings under different moisture levels. In a complete randomised design (3 species x 4 treatments x 12 replicates) in a shade house, 144 pots with fairly uniform actively g

The effect of varying temperatures was investigated on the integrity of glue line and compressive strength parallel to grain for glue laminated Funtumia Africana (Ire) timber laminated with polyvinyl acetate glue. The performance of the glue line was investigated over temperatures of 0oC, 30oC, 40 oC, 50oC, 70oC, and 100oC administered to test samples over a period of 4 hours. The strength values were computed at an average moisture content of 5.6%. A mean compressive strength of 34.4 N/mm2 was recorded at 0oC while a rise to 41.2N/mm2 was recorded for 30oC. Funtumia africana leaves have been used by the people of Niger Delta region of Nigeria to treat diabetes. This study aims to evaluate the polyphenolic contents, antioxidant, and free radical scavenging activities of the leaf crude extract and fractions. The crude aqueous methanolic leaf extract of F. africana was extracted by liquid-liquid partitioning into n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions. The free radical scavenging activity of the fractions was measured in vitro by using the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl dihydrazyl (DPPH), a

Medically active compounds in plants confer biological effects including antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the phytochemical content and in vitro antioxidant properties of combined Funtumia africana leaves and Abutilon mauritianum extract (CFAE). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and nitric oxide radical (NO.) scavenging capabilities were used as antioxidant assay models. The results of the phytochemical analysis showed that CFAE is rich in alkaloids,

Abstract:
This study assessed the environmental factors underlying the leaf litter decomposition rate in streams in the equatorial rainforest of Cameroon. To reach this goal we used the litterbag method and dead leaves of Funtumia africana (Benth) Stapf (Apocynaceae)in seven natural streams. Concomitantly, we measured biological (fungi and macroinvertebrates) and environmental parameters to highlight those that control the leaf litter breakdown rates. The breakdown rates ranged from 0.035 to 0.056 with an average of 0.042 ± 0.006 in the coarse-mesh litterbags (Kc) and from 0.018 to 0.059 with an average

Abstract:
Medicinal plants have played an important role in drug discovery, with many pharmaceutical products originating from plants. Isolation and characterization of antibacterial compounds is still relevant today because of continuing development of resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of leaf extracts of nine tree species (Acalypha sonderiana, Androstachys johnsonii, Dracaena mannii, Drypetes natalensis, Funtumia africana, Necepsia casteneifolia, Oncinotus tenuiloba, Turraea floribunda, and Xylia torreana) selected from the Phytomedi
