Abstract:
Abstract The crystal structure of cosalite from the Trepča orefield was refined in the orthorhombic space group Pnma [a = 23.7878 (9), b = 4.0566 (3), c = 19.1026 (8) Å, V = 1843.35 (17) Å3, Z = 2] from single-crystal data (MoKα X-ray diffraction, CCD area detector) to the conventional R1 factor 0.031 for 1516 unique reflections with I > 2σ(I). The chemical formula (Cu0.15Ag0.24)+(Fe0.19Pb7.20)2+(Bi7.06Sb1.06)3+S20, calculated on the basis of 20 S atoms per formula unit, was determined by WDX. The unit cell contains 18 + 2 symmetrically nonequivalent atomic sites: 10 occupied by S; two by pure Pb (Pb3 and Pb4); one by pure Bi (Bi1); two by a combination of Bi and small amounts of Sb (Bi2/Sb2, Bi4/Sb3); two by Pb and Bi, and in one of these also by a small amount of Ag [Me1 = Pb2 >> Bi5 > Ag1, Me3 = Pb1 >> Bi3]; and finally one site, Me2 (Bi6 >> □), is partly occupied by Bi and partly split into an additional two adjacent trigonal planar “interstitial positions”, Cu1 and Cu2, where small amounts of Cu, Ag, and Fe can be situated. All atoms are at 4c special positions at y = 0.25 or 0.75. The structure consists of slightly to moderately distorted MeS6 octahedra sharing edges, bicapped trigonal PbS8 coordination prisms, and fairly distorted Cu1S6 and Cu2S4 polyhedra. The effects of the cation substitutions, bond valence sums, and the polyhedral characteristics are compared with other published cosalite-type structures. Among known cosalite-type structures, the largest volume contraction is shown by sample 4 (Altenberg) and involves the replacement of large cations (Bi3+ and Pb2+) by the smaller Sb3+, as well as Cu+ and Ag+. These replacements are reflected in the variations of individual Me–S bond distances, which are accompanied by variations in average Me–S distances. The degree of polyhedral distortion, Δ, progressively increases for the four Bi-hosting sites of nine cosalite-type structures: Me2 < Bi2 < Bi1 < Bi4. The Bi4 and Me3 are the most and the Me1 and Me2 are the least distorted octahedral sites of the nine cosalite-type structures.

Abstract:
Abstract. Luxembourgite, ideally AgCuPbBi4Se8, is a new selenide discovered at Bivels, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The mineral forms tiny fibres reaching 200 µm in length and 5 µm in diameter, which are deposited on dolomite crystals. Luxembourgite is grey, with a metallic lustre and without cleavage planes; its Mohs hardness is 3 and its calculated density is 8.00 g cm−3. Electron-microprobe analyses indicate an empirical formula Ag1.00(Cu0.82Ag0.20Fe0.01)Σ1.03Pb1.13Bi4.11(Se7.72S0.01)Σ7.73, calculated on the basis of 15 atoms per formula unit. A single-crystal structure refinement was performed to R1=0.0476, in the P21∕m space group, with a=13.002(1), b=4.1543(3), c=15.312(2) Å, β=108.92(1)∘, V=782.4(2) Å3, Z=2. The crystal structure is similar to that of litochlebite and watkinsonite and can be described as an alternation of two types of anionic layers: a pseudotetragonal layer four atoms thick and a pseudohexagonal layer that is one atom thick. In the pseudotetragonal layers the Bi1, Bi2 ,Bi3, Pb, and Ag1 atoms are localised, while the Cu2 and Bi4 atoms occur between the pseudotetragonal and the pseudohexagonal layers. Bi1, Bi2, and Bi3 atoms occur in weakly distorted octahedral sites, whereas Bi4 occurs in a distorted 7-coordinated site. Ag1 occupies a fairly regular octahedral site, Cu2 a tetrahedral position, and Pb occurs on a very distorted 8-coordinated site.

Abstract:
The structures and powder X-ray reference diffraction patterns of the “natural superlattice” series Bi1−xPbxOCuSe (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.10) have been investigated. As the ionic radius of Pb2+ is greater than that of Bi3+, the unit-cell volume of Bi1−xPbxOCuSe increases progressively from x = 0 to 0.1, namely, from 137.868(5) to 139.172(11) Å3, as expected. The structure of Bi1−xPbxOCuSe is built from [Bi2(1−x)Pb2xO2]2(1−x)+ layers normal to the c-axis alternating with [Cu2Se2]2(1−x)− fluorite-like layers. Pb substitution in the Bi site of Bi1−xPbxOCuSe leads to the weakening of the “bonding” between the [Bi2(1−x)Pb2xO2]2(1−x)+ and the [Cu2Se2]2(1−x)− layers. Powder patterns of Bi1−xPbxOCuSe were submitted to be included in the Powder Diffraction File.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTNontoxigenicClostridium difficile(NTCD) has been shown to prevent fatalC. difficileinfection in the hamster model when hamsters are challenged with standard toxigenicC. difficilestrains. The purpose of this study was to determine if NTCD can preventC. difficileinfection in the hamster model when hamsters are challenged with restriction endonuclease analysis group BIC. difficilestrains. Groups of 10 hamsters were given oral clindamycin, followed on day 2 by 106CFU of spores of NTCD strain M3 or T7, and were challenged on day 5 with 100 CFU of spores of BI1 or BI6. To conserve animals, results for control hamsters challenged with BI1 or BI6 from the present study and controls from previous identical experiments were combined for statistical comparisons. NTCD strains M3 and T7 achieved 100% colonization and were 100% protective against challenge with BI1 (P≤ 0.001). M3 colonized 9/10 hamsters and protected against BI6 challenge in the colonized hamsters (P= 0.0003). T7 colonized 10/10 hamsters, but following BI6 challenge, cocolonization occurred in 5 hamsters, 4 of which died, for protection of 6/10 animals (P= 0.02). NTCD colonization provides protection against challenge with toxigenic BI group strains. M3 is more effective than T7 in preventingC. difficileinfection caused by the BI6 epidemic strain. Prevention ofC. difficileinfection caused by the epidemic BI6 strain may be more challenging than that of infections caused by historic BI1 and non-BIC. difficilestrains.

Abstract:
Bi-doped compounds recently became the subject of an extensive research due to their possible applications as scintillator and phosphor materials. The oxides co-doped with Bi3+ and trivalent rare-earth ions were proposed as prospective phosphors for white light-emitting diodes and quantum cutting down-converting materials applicable for enhancement of silicon solar cells. Luminescence characteristics of different Bi3+-doped materials were found to be strongly different and ascribed to electronic transitions from the excited levels of a Bi3+ ion to its ground state, charge-transfer transitions, Bi3+ dimers or clusters, radiative decay of Bi3+-related localized or trapped excitons, etc. In this review, we compare the characteristics of the Bi3+-related luminescence in various compounds; discuss the possible origin of the corresponding luminescence centers as well as the processes resulting in their luminescence; consider the phenomenological models proposed to describe the excited-state dynamics of the Bi3+-related centers and determine the structure and parameters of their relaxed excited states; address an influence of different interactions (e.g., spin-orbit, electron-phonon, hyperfine) as well as the Bi3+ ion charge and volume compensating defects on the luminescence characteristics. The Bi-related luminescence arising from lower charge states (namely, Bi2+, Bi+, Bi0) is also reviewed.

Abstract:
Bee bread is rich in phenolic compounds and recently has gained attention as a food additive, which provides an alternative use to synthetic preservatives. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the proximate composition and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of fish sausages fortified with Heterotrigona itama bee bread ethanolic (BBE) extract at 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75% concentrations. Incorporation of BBE in fish sausages significantly increased the carbohydrate level and lowered the moisture content. The highest phenolic and flavonoid content were observed in fish sausages with 0.75% BBE with 23.46 ± 1.60 mg GAE/g sample and 8.05 ± 0.24 mg rutin/g sample, respectively. The antioxidant activity revealed the highest DPPH scavenging activity for 0.75% BBE fish sausage compared to synthetic additive BHT. After 28 days of frozen storage, lipid oxidation activity of fish sausages with 0.75% BBE had lower thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value than the negative control, but similar ( p > 0.05 ) to BHT. The phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities were significantly reduced ( p < 0.05 ) after 28 days of storage. Based on the antibacterial activity, BBE was able to inhibit tested foodborne pathogens, and the addition of BBE in fish sausage showed total plate count below 6 log10 CFU/g within 6 days of frozen storage. This research demonstrated the BBE efficiency as a natural antioxidant with antibacterial properties in fish sausages.

Abstract:
Multiferroic ceramic samples of Bi1-xGdxFeO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) have been prepared by the rapid liquid phase sintering technique. The effect of Gd substitution on ferroelectric properties of Bi1-xGdxFeO3 ceramics has been investigated. The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the single-phase BiFeO3 sample has a rhombohedral structure and Gd3+ substitution for Bi3+ has not affected the perovskite structure. Experimental results suggest that Gd3+ substitution for Bi3+ has markedly affected the Raman scattering spectra, and the ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3 are improved by Gd3+ doping. When x = 0.15, saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop is observed at room temperature with the maximal 2Pr = 1.62 μC/cm2.

Abstract:
AbstractHoneybees (Apis mellifera) and bumblebees (Bombus spp.) often undergo exploitative competition for shared floral resources, which can alter their foraging behaviour and flower choice, even causing competitive exclusion. This may be strongest in summer, when foraging conditions are most challenging for bees, compared to other times of the year. However, the seasonal dynamics of competition between these major pollinator groups are not well understood. Here, we investigate whether the strength of exploitative competition for nectar between honeybees and bumblebees varies seasonally, and whether competitive pressure is greatest in summer months. We carried out experimental bee exclusion trials from May to late September, using experimental patches of lavender, variety Grosso, in full bloom. In each trial, we compared the numbers of honeybees (HB) foraging on patches from which bumblebees had been manually excluded (bumblebee excluded, BBE) versus control (CON) patches, HB(BBE-CON). This measure of exploitative competition varied significantly with season. As expected, mean HB(BBE-CON) was significantly greater in summer trials than in spring or autumn trials. This was despite high nectar standing crop volumes in BBE patch flowers in spring and autumn trials. Mean HB(BBE-CON) was not different between spring and autumn trials. Our results show that nectar competition between honeybees and bumblebees varies seasonally and is stronger in summer than spring or autumn, adding to current understanding of the seasonality of resource demand and competition between bee species. This information may also help to inform conservation programs aiming to increase floral resources for bees by showing when these resources are most needed.

Abstract:
The effect of catalyst on the performance of liquid-phase selective oxidation of cyclohexane as probe reaction over Co-Bi2(MoO4)3 prepared by precipitation method was investigated. The catalyst evaluation results show that the optimum catalyst atomic ratio is n(Mo):n(Bi):n(Co)=1.5:1:0.2 with high selecivity under certain conversion. Meanwhile selective oxidation of Bi2(MoO4)3 was slowed down, selecivity of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol reached 74.1%, 22.2% respectively. The main composition of the catalyst is Bi2(MoO4)3. Co-Bi2(MoO4)3 had new catalyst sites with Bi3+, Mo6+ and Co2+ having a cooperative effects during oxidation of cyclohexane. Under this condition, selecivity of cyclohexanone improved greatly. Micro-structure and essence disciplinarian of Co-Bi2(MoO4)3 were disclosed by XRD and FTIR. This study could provide experimental data for the technical reform of industry equipment.

Abstract:
Many optimization models to determine cost-effectiveness and obtain the least-cost system designs for water distribution networks have been developed. An algorithm used for solving an optimization model, such as the branch-and-bound or enumeration method, has deficiencies that may include efficiency problems and local optimal solution problems. A heuristic approach, with a bounded implicit enumeration (BIE) algorithm was developed in this study to improve searching efficiency. The heuristic approach first treats the system as a sub-system so that the sub-system's solution must spread widely at the solution space. Then, the optimal sub-system solution is found by a BIE algorithm. On the basis of the optimal solution for the initial system, one larger than and one smaller than its commercial diameter is used to form a new system design. Finally, an optimal solution is determined by using the BIE algorithm until the same solution is found. In this study, five water distribution network designs were used to illustrate the performance of this approach. The results show that a heuristic approach is more efficient than the BIE alone. The efficiency becomes more obvious when the system becomes larger. Comparing the three case studies, the heuristic approach along with the BIE algorithm finds global optimal solution more efficiently.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Symbiobacterium thermophilum is a syntrophic bacterium whose growth depends on coculture with a Bacillus sp. Recently, we discovered that CO2 generated by Bacillus is the major inducer for the growth of S. thermophilum; however, the evidence suggested that an additional element is required for its full growth. Here, we studied the self-growth-inhibitory substances produced by S. thermophilum. We succeeded in purifying two substances from an ether extract of the culture supernatant of S. thermophilum by multiple steps of reverse-phase chromatography. Electron ionization mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses of the purified preparation identified the substances as 2,2-bis(3′-indolyl)indoxyl (BII) and 1,1-bis(3′-indolyl)ethane (BIE). The pure growth of S. thermophilum was inhibited by authentic BII and BIE with MICs of 12 and 7 μg/ml, respectively; however, its growth in coculture with Bacillus was not inhibited by BII at the saturation concentration and was inhibited by BIE with an MIC of 14 μg/ml. Both BII and BIE inhibited the growth of other microorganisms. Unexpectedly, the accumulation levels of both BII and BIE in the pure culture of S. thermophilum were far lower than the MICs (<0.1 μg/ml) while a marked amount of BIE (6 to 7 μg/ml) equivalent to the MIC had accumulated in the coculture. An exogenous supply of surfactin alleviated the sensitivities of several BIE-sensitive bacteria against BIE. The results suggest that Bacillus benefits S. thermophilum by detoxifying BII and BIE in the coculture. A similar mechanism may underlie mutualistic relationships between different microorganisms.

Abstract:
The objective of this article is to study new bidding prequalification criteria of the Royal Thai government sectors according to the Government Procurement and Supplies Management Act, B.E. 2560 (2017) and compare with the seven government agencies according to Regulations on Procurement, 1992 by emphasizing branch/type of construction, class of the construction entrepreneur/contractor, right to bid per one contract, and number of project to carry out on concurrent time. Content analysis was used in this research, by studying and analysing the prequalification criteria of the Government Procurement and Supplies Management Act, B.E. 2560 (2017) comparing to Regulations on Procurement, 1992 The findings of prequalification criteria concluded that Act, 2017 defined 7 branches/types of construction for construction entrepreneur whereas building construction, road maintenance, and traffic safety were repealed. The right to bid per one contract volume lower than 5 million baht are allowed. There is no limit for the number of project and total project value on concurrent period comparing with Regulations, 1992.

Abstract:
The anodization of titanium dental implant influences the biologic processes of osseointegration. 34 grit-blasted and acid-etched titanium specimens were used to evaluate micro- and nano-roughness (Ra), contact angle (θ) and blood clot extension (bce). 17 samples were anodized (test) while the remaining were used as control. The bce, was measured using 10 µL of human blood left in contact with titanium for 5 min at room temperature. The micro- and nano-scale Ra were measured under CLSM and AFM, respectively, while the θ was analyzed using the sessile drop technique. The bone-implant contact (BIC) rate was measured on two narrow implants retrieved for fracture. bce was 42.5 (±22) for test and 26.6% (±13)% for control group (p = 0.049). The micro-Ra was 6.0 (±1.5) for the test and 5.8 (±1.8) µm for control group (p > 0.05). The θ was 98.5° (±18.7°) for test and 103° (±15.2°) for control group (p > 0.05). The nano-Ra was 286 (±40) for the test and 226 (±40) nm for control group (p < 0.05). The BIC rate was 52.5 (±2.1) for test and 34.5% (±2.1%) for control implant (p = 0.014). (Conclusions) The titanium anodized surface significantly increases blood clot retention, significantly increases nano-roughness, and favors osseointegration. When placing dental implants in poor bone quality sites or with immediate loading protocol anodized Ti6Al4V dental implants should be preferred.
