Riall, Ernest. "Making fashionable furniture in England and France during the 'age of elegance'." Thesis, Bucks New University, 2010. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/10115/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis has been to describe the complex influences governing the production of fashionable furniture in C18th England and France in order to reassess the connection between material practices, the cultures in which they reside and the philosophical ideas from which they emerge. This has been achieved by detailing the factors influencing the design and production of late C18th furniture in England and France and developing a comparative model developed around the Harewood Library Table by Thomas Chippendale and The Wallace Collection F302 Secrétaire á abattant by Riesener, in order to isolate, identify and interpret differences between them. This innovative case study sits at the heart of this thesis and describes in detail how these pieces were designed and constructed and how they relate to the wider cultures from which they emerged. The result of this is apparent in a number of outcomes. Firstly, the thesis offers a definitive summary of the key characteristics of Chippendale’s and Riesener’s work which will better enable practitioners (conservators, curators, collectors, etc.) to identify pieces made by these makers, analyze their condition and help conserve these important pieces of furniture: furniture history currently is over‐dependent on much more subjective approaches to this process of identification. Secondly, the thesis examines different aspects of furniture making in England and France (literature on the workshops, information on economic conditions, evidence relating to tools and materials etc.) and integrates them in such a way as to provide an authoritative account of the complex processes involved in the commissioning of such fashionable furniture. The thesis not only helps us better understand furniture making in England and France at a structural level during this key period of transition but also provides an original and systematic approach to writing a history around such material cultures, demonstrating how important it is to the full(est) comprehension of history that such fashionable objects be understood. Where other frequently more privileged objects (written documents, paintings and sculptures etc.) have been seen to provide valuable historical insights, this thesis argues that fashionable furniture can now be seen to provide its own unique perspectives on the time and on the society in which it was created.

Hawson, Thomas. "Contemporary craft in Iceland : communicating culture through making." Thesis, Bucks New University, 2006. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/9927/.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral project develops an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to furniture designer\maker practice. At its core is a practice-based framework that can be used to assess and reflect upon the tacit, primarily visual nature of makers’ knowledge and the way that this can be communicated in order to develop design outcomes. The enquiry takes as its focus a two-year collaboration between the author – a British-based furniture designer/maker – and six indigenous Icelandic craft practitioners in which the ultimate goal was the creation of artefacts that, it was hoped, would be expressive of Iceland’s native craft traditions. During the ‘Iceland Project,’ as it came to be known, interaction between and among participants was grounded in a predetermined plan developed democratically through consultation and dialogue. The project successfully develops new knowledge through a contemporary reinterpretation of indigenous Icelandic craft-making knowledge and demonstrates this through the making of artefacts imbued with recognized cultural status. It also extends furniture designer/maker research by developing an innovative practice-based method of collaboration rooted in the multimedia archiving of the making process which can then be used to illuminate and facilitate future practice. The project is a scholarly display of makers’ knowledge: the process is shared democratically among peers; the decisions that articulate design and methods of making are reviewed; and inter-subjective outcomes are generated. To facilitate learning from designer/maker practice-based research, the creative narrative is necessarily partly articulated through visual media and artifacts.

Abstract:
The increasing impact of mass production and consumption behaviours have made sustainable product design an important issue in design literature in the last two decades. Studies in the early period focussed on research projects carried out in collaboration with multinational large-sized enterprises, owing to pressures from non-governmental organizations. However, recent studies about sustainable development have pointed out that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) rather than multinationals have a greater share of manufacturing and employment in both industrialized and industrializing countries. Unfortunately, in spite of the important role of SMEs, there is inadequate data and literature relating sustainable design practices to these firms. A lack of information and collaboration, caused partially by communication problems, has resulted in an absence of proper sustainable product design tools for these companies. Furniture enterprises in Ankara are the focus of this study because of the impact of product design in market possibilities and the spread of employment of product designers in the sector. Attitudes of staff and consultants of furniture SMEs regarding barriers and opportunities of sustainable product design are explored, and contrasted with overlapping points of existing product development methods and strategies in the literature. This work is intended to contribute to improved understanding and application of sustainable product design among furniture sector SMEs. To this end, interviews were conducted with 16 furniture manufacturing enterprises from the furniture industry, based in Ankara region and 5 freelance furniture designers cooperating with these enterprises. According to the results of the study, furniture sector SMEs are interested more in economic opportunities of sustainable product design rather than environmental and social aspects. Furthermore, a lack of information about environmental issues is observed in micro and small-sized enterprises
to overcome this situation, it is recommended that training sessions are organized to bring together researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:
Reason for writing. The space of confusion and possibility where the practices of art and design collide seems to be in a constant amoebic state. This place of shared influence and growth seems to pervade not only the intersection of these two disciplines, but within interior design, the intersection of people and space. How can the boundaries between an interior space and it’s inhabitants be as richly embedded with tension and opportunity as the edges where art and design meet? Like art and design, how can a space and it’s visitors interact to affect one another? Problem + Methodology: This project explores these questions in a context mindful of their origin: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The design proposal of inserting a fashion wing into the VMFA’s existing context evolves from research and process work across art, design, and architecture, from the scale of the building to the scale of a seat. Results + Implications: The challenge of creating public space that can be just as responsive to and influential over it’s inhabitants as private space seems resolved through the navigation of movement and moment. Finding value in an unscripted discovery of a space and the ownership of private experiences, offers a way to feel engaged with and connected to a space that doesn’t rely on object ownership or territorial comfort. This solution does rely, however, on inhabitants capable of being present and responsive to their environment, allowing other visitor’s interactions with the space and their individual path through the exhibits to affect their perceptions of and connectedness with the design.

Full text
Abstract:
Recycled Posthuman Furniture – What has furniture become is a project that aims to explore the relationship between humans and furniture from the post-humanist perspective. Post-humanism is understood here as our capacity of giving non-human items the sense of humanity in terms of ethics and effects. Accordingly, we might consider the furniture has some certain human values. Therefore, this paper aims to demonstrate a new relationship compared with current states through a transdisciplinary design and speculative design with the goal of changing people’s understanding towards discarded furniture. Through the knowledge of current issues, this paper is tended to bring different perspectives of thoughts and questions in order to be aware of surrounding issues with the hope of changing current states to deliver a better future by chance. As the result, this paper puts forward a new sustainable lifestyle which advocates equality and inclusiveness among human and nonhuman and thus helps to solve survival crisis. Human is not the almighty of the world and all the existences are valuable as well. As humans, we must change our thinking patterns and begin accepting and treating other nonhuman equally. We are required to wake emotions that are hiding deep down in our heart and apply them on furniture and treat rejected and abandoned furniture as human. Only in this way can we decrease environmental pressure, reduce the discharge of solid waste and deal with the global crisis. Taking furniture as a start, humans should open their emotions and care for all objects that are living on the earth, focus on collective interest instead of individual interest.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how, in my role a a craftsman, I can use decorativeelements in my work. Furthermore, I seek to answer the question about how the development towards today’s minimalist aesthetics has evolved and what the consequences of this has been. This examination consists of a literature study where I use different sources to discuss decorative elements from a range of perspectives. The study includes an analysis of decoration from a gender perspective, an investigation on the term taste and a discussion on how ornamentation influences the aesthetic s ustainability of an object. Moreover, I use my craftsmanship skills to examine the subject through designing and constructing a physical object. In my design process, I merge the minimalistic ideal as represented by an IKEA table with a decorative element in the form of marquetry. My conclusion is that decorative elements have the possibility to enable emotional connection with an object and a s craftsmenhave the opportunity to satisfy this need. The discussion about the existence of ornamentationis important and should keep being held in the design and craft community.

Buck, Lyndon. "Furniture design with composite materials." Thesis, Bucks New University, 1997. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/9977/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examined the feasibility of fibre composite reinforcement in the furniture industry. The development of post war furniture design was reviewed, with particular emphasis on the main design movements and the use of new materials and technologies. The use of fibre composite materials in contemporary furniture was discussed in terms of technical development, environmental effects and psychological acceptance. Fibre reinforcements and adhesives were compared, as were fabrication techniques applicable to the existing British furniture industry. Particular emphasis has been placed on the fibre reinforcement of laminated timber sections as a method of overcoming many of the manufacturing problems of composites. Methods of analysing the behaviour under load of fibre reinforced laminated wood were reviewed. Resistance among the furniture buying public to modem, non-traditional furniture design was discussed, along with ways of making composite materials more aesthetically acceptable. Experimentation to determine the mechanical properties of fibre composite reinforced wood against wood control samples was undertaken, along with methods used to analyse the results for flat and curved samples. Modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and impact strength were measured, as was the level of distortion of the samples before and after testing. A full size chair form was produced to demonstrate the behaviour of the material on a larger scale. The development of the design was discussed in terms of ergonomic requirements, aesthetics, practicality and environmental concerns. The problem of predicting the behaviour of complex shapes was discussed and a finite element analysis of the form is carried out to gain an accurate picture of the composite's performance. Production of fibre reinforced materials was discussed, along with the furniture industry's reluctance to invest in new materials and technologies. The feasibility of adapting traditional furniture making skills and equipment to the production of fibre composite reinforced wood has been assessed.

Abstract:
Research shows the importance of a childhood home environment encouraging of creative and imaginative play. I designed a set of children's furniture that, in addition to being play toys, stimulates creativity, interactivity and understanding of design construction. When a child understands how furniture is assembled and is encouraged to be creative in play, he or she gains valuable learning experiences while having fun. Together, a child and adult can easily assemble all the pieces of furniture without any need for tools. Much like a puzzle, the child has fun assembling the furniture while, at the same time, learns valuable lessons of spatial relationships and structural stability. This also leads to an understanding of safety in play. The added element of a portable three-inch LED orb encourages interaction once all pieces are assembled. Abstract design elements were used to stimulate imagination during play. Using basic Gestalt design principles, the furniture series was constructed to not only be structural but to be beautiful in design. The curved abstract shapes encourage the child to take control and imagine the furniture as integral components of their play scene.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this creative project was the exploration into designing and creating sculptures that combine various materials in a visually pleasing way. Could these sculptures emphasize excellence in craftsmanship and sophistication of surface? Could the inherent properties of these materials be manipulated and combined in an engaging manner, which would enhance the beauty of both materials? This body of work required a variety of metalsmithing techniques including forging, mokumegane, and metal forming. This body of work also required various woodworking skills such as lathe turning and wood joint construction. There were several materials used such as exotic and domestic woods, and ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This body of work challenged my technical and conceptual abilities making me a better artist and designer, not only in metalsmithing, but also woodworking.

Wilson, David. "Furniture and furniture-making in Gloucestershire, 1600-1730 : an analysis of a regional and vernacular tradition." Thesis, Southampton Solent University, 2008. http://ssudl.solent.ac.uk/769/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the domestic and ecclesiastic furniture of Gloucestershire and opens with a critical review of the previous literature on furniture history and its development during the twentieth century, noting how it changed from a collector-oriented approach, involving the aesthetic and 'quaint' aspects of the furniture, to a more serious academic approach where the furniture was seen as a reflection of the material culture of the period. This is followed by an outline of the methodology employed in the thesis, noting particularly the new approaches to the study of vernacular furniture employed therein, together with a discussion of the primary literary sources of the period. After a brief outline of the geographical and social background to Gloucestershire and the three study areas which have been selected within the county, there follows an analysis of the value and problems of the studyof inventories in general and the furniture types recorded in those from Gloucestershire, frequently comparing and contrasting the furniture with that from other areas of the country. Following this, and using the same data, the furniture is studied in its relation to its placement and usage in the major upstairs and downstairs rooms indicating and interpreting where relevant, changes that took place in these aspects and giving possible reasons for them. The decorative motifs and constructional features of extant Gloucestershire furniture, both domestic and church, and both fixed and moveable are examined, suggesting which features can be seen as diagnostic of pieces made in the county. the opportunityu is also taken to compare critically these findings with the observations presented in previous literature. Finally a range of primary written sources in analysed, using the information from them to construct a series of maps showing the distribution of the various woodworkers recorded in Gloucestershire at different times in the 17th and early 18th century. This approach enabled suggestions to be made concerning the likely centres of furniture production and even, on occasions, to postulate the makers of particular items of furniture.

In Taiwan, even though we have sets of desks and chairs in different sizes for school children, due to the inconsistency of purchases and the number of students in the year, many students did not have the opportunity to use desks and chairs that fit their height. In such an environment, students have incorrect postures, cannot concentrate in class, and begin to neglect or even destroy the tables and chairs they use. In this project, I designed the furniture to be adjustable in height. It solves the inconvenience of school procurement and provides students with a more comfortable learning environment. Besides, I also introduced the concept of "Wood education" to cultivate students' understanding of Taiwan's native natural resources and develop the feeling of cherishing the furniture that students use from assembling their wooden furniture.

Abstract:
This is a research project to design a series of flat pack furniture that assemble without using any hardware and tools. The furniture series included a chair, a table, a coffee table, a side table, a bed and a sofa. Wheels were designed in the furniture to create mobility with the exception of the bed. Sustainable materials, such as Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified plywood and High-density polyethylene (HDPE), had been used to produce the furniture. Rapid prototyping (RP) processes were being used to shorten the design process, such as Computer Aided-Design program (CAD) and Computer Modeling software to design; 3D Printer to create small scale model; Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to create full-scale prototype. Flat packaging has been used in the series to provide convenient to transport the furniture and the shipping cost.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 1, entitled "The Scottish Tradition", builds on the early twentieth-century consensus that Lorimer had resuscitated a moribund Scottish tradition of design. While critics have examined the Scottish roots of Lorimer's architecture, the native sources of his furniture design have received little corresponding attention. This section aims to demonstrate the ways in which Lorimer's interest in historical Scottish architecture and woodwork informed his interior and furniture design. In particular, his use of vernacular and regional forms is juxtaposed with the revival of traditional types and motifs he shared with contemporary designers. Complementing a concern with indigenous design is Lorimer's interest in continental antique furniture. Lorimer's personal collection, and those of his clients, may be identified as formative in the development of his design. Chapter 2 examines the main sources, against the social background of Scottish furniture and interior design during the period. The circumstances of the commissions discussed here reveal Lorimer's combination of the roles of architect and interior designer, the focus of Chapter 3 on Lorimer's wide-ranging activities at Balmanno Castle, Perthshire. Chapter 4 seeks to redress the balance between Lorimer as traditionalist and agent for reform, particularly in the area of design education. It will be argued that his own design innovations were secondary to the latter achievement. His attitudes to industrial design and handcraft are considered here, which leads to the final chapter on workmanship. This section is comprised of an in-depth study of Lorimer's working relationship with the executants of his designs; the variant use of handwork and machinework is discussed, and finally some attempt is made to discern and acknowledge the peculiar contributions of designer and workmen.

Abstract:
As time goes by, people are no longer limited with the basic demands of survival, which started in the primitive society, and try to search for the satisfaction of spirit and comfortable sensation. At this time, furniture becomes to be the spiritualization carrier: they could contain the history and culture; they could make people relax and bring belongingness; they could show the preference of the designers. The furniture, or all kind of design, can be more than passionless implements. That is the subject I want to explore. Because of my educational background in interior design and architecture, I usually search a way to balance between technology and people's emotions, and try to keep the function together with physical contact of design at the same time. Due to the awareness of `people-oriented' concept, I researched and designed the Cocktail furniture series. The purpose of this thesis is to analysis this furniture set, which includes a chair, a coatrack and a table. The main theme of design is to create a relaxing area with soft curved lines and round shapes, and use as few pieces as possible to reduce the weight and waste of material. I used the computer graphics, algorithms and ergonomics, Thermal Forming and Computer Numerical Control techniques together to produce the building-block combination furniture with sustainable plywood and HDPE plastic. Furthermore the use of Ergonomic, such as replaceable pieces, applies the humanistic care in the furniture. Within the consideration of function and aesthetic demands, I want to create the kind of design that can bring the joy and comfort for customers.

Abstract:
To document the design, prototype and manufacture of a lounge, which stimulates communication and human interaction. The lounge will also question conventional seating arrangements, and redefine how two people can sit in relation to each other, converse, interact and exchange body language. The process began with an initial design sketch, and producing a prototype. This step was required, as it was the starting point for the major project. It provided me with an initial design to criticize and improve on. The major project is intended to test the validity of the initial design, analyse the markets, and improve the design in relation to ergonomic issues, material/manufacturing resolution and produce a marketing plan. The next stage of the process was the gathering and analysis of relevant information in order to redefine the design brief. This involved preliminary research into marketing, ergonomics, materials and manufacturing processes. With the design brief now established, concepts were prepared and compared against the products criteria. The design solution which best met the criteria was further detailed and developed. Finally, a business plan was put together to test the commercial viability of the lounge. The business plan was comprised of the viable markets, production cost, investment cost, discounted cash flow, and sensitivity analysis.

Abstract:
In my M.F.A. thesis, I am going to talk about the process of revising my furniture series and designing new furniture in the series, which includes Chair ONE, Table 1⁄2, Bed ONE, and Sofa ONE. I am revising the area that didn't work very well. In Chair ONE, I have revised the seating area to provide better stability. In Table 1⁄2, I have revised the support structure of the table. As I learned from the current structure, the tabletop start to bend as the tabletop dimension increased, as my table 1⁄2 has three different kinds of tabletop. I have added a second beam across the table legs to increase support to the tabletop. In Bed ONE, I have added supporting structure for the bed frame. I noticed the plastic beam bent as weight added in a duration of time. A new supporting structure is needed to provide better stability of the structure. In Sofa ONE, I have increased the dimension of the seating area. The plastic piece on the seating area isn't long enough to support the cushion. It doesn't provide a comfortable seating position for user. The only solution is to extending the seating structure. Also, a supporting structure added to better support for the seating area Finally, I have designed a dining set for this series, which include a dining table and four chairs. The chair and the table are based on the design of my furniture series, but it will be a completely new set of furniture.

A pre-study was performed to define the problem area and to set the requirements for the furniture. The pre-study included: studies and discussions at the associated company, literature review within the field, user survey, market search and ergonomics study. When the specification was set and clarified, the concept generation phase was started. Design methods were used to structure and support the design activity. In addition, principles of inclusive design were followed in order to end up with a design that would fit a larger part of the targeted customer group. The generated design concepts were assessed according to fulfilment of set requirements. One final concept was chosen for further development in the following detail design phase. This activity included specifying the design in detail, e.g. related to materials, colours and accessories. The collaboration with the company was essential during the whole project for getting inspiration, feedback and important inputs to the design activity. Hence, the company’s opinions were continuously considered along the design process. A prototype was made of the final design and tests were performed to assess the design and to get input for further development.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of scheduling production in a wood furniture plant. In particular, we consider the problem of selecting orders from various types of furniture products and determining their lot-sizes for production when there are sequence dependent setup times involved in the production of these items. This is termed the aggregate scheduling problem. In addition, we consider the problem of scheduling work at various production facilities in the presence of capacity constraints once the items for production and their quantities are selected. This is termed the detailed scheduling problem. The aggregate scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer program and solved using a dynamic programming procedure. The detailed scheduling program is a linear program and is solved using a canned linear programming package. In order to understand the state-of-the-art in the furniture industry, various furniture plants in Southwest Virginia were visited and a national survey was conducted. The results are summarized. The survey emphasized the problem addressed in this research. In order to understand the decision points better in the furniture manufacturing process, the IDEF (ICAM definition) procedure is used to describe the furniture manufacturing process. The methodology developed is applied to a real-life problem and the results are summarized.

Abstract:
The rate at which the human race is exhausting the planet’s resources, a transition from a linear economy to a circular economy has become necessary. More importantly the success of circular economy is dependent on the consumer’s everyday actions and practices. This project looks to contribute to that smooth transition at a consumer behavior level of furniture consumption through market actions. It specifically focuses on the sustainable consumption of the sofas to be able to collect data and actionable insights so that it can serve as an example that can be applied to all types of furniture. The project created a framework from literature review on consumer behavior of furniture, sustainability and circular economy. Furthermore, it used several design methods to collect and analyze the data, before arriving at the final design project. The resulting project is called the ‘culture of care’. Based on the collected actionable insights throughout the project, the culture of care project proposes several circular based market actions in the form of service design, product design and product-service design to maintain and repair sofas in the hands of the consumers.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the proposal that environmentally benign items of free standing furniture may be produced by the use of such well established techniques as training and grafting natural tree growth to shape. The project has been driven by the growing environmental concerns of which mankind has become aware in the late twentieth century, and which are starting to exert such a powerful influence in the twenty first. A broad history of man's use and control of natural tree growth, ranging geographically from Europe to Australia, and in size from hand held agricultural picks to eighteenth century sailing ships, is followed by a brief description of the ways in which the explosive increase in world popuanon. together with the expanding industrial activities of the Western consumer society, are feared to be threatening the stability of the natural environment. The various disasters and catastrophic accidents which have brought this situation to the attention of the general public are briefly surveyed, together with National, International and a range of Industrial responses. As one of the professions most closely concerned with the production of consumer items, the various reactions of the Design Community are similarly examined. In conclusion, the author's proposal for an experimental item of furnitureenvironmentally benign in production, use and disposal - is described and illustrated. A simple free standing three legged stool, the form of both the item itself and that of the jig required to control it's growth, are described and illustrated. The growth of examples of this, carried out on three sites across southern Britain are documented, experimental results reported and discussed. A further range of designs suitable to be produced using this method of controlling and grafting natural growth is proposed, and suggestions made for further experimentation.

Abstract:
The need for sustainability, increasingly requires developing products according to a cradle to cradle approach. For furniture, wood, being potentially renewable, is a suitable material in this regard. However, most wooden furniture today utilizes steels and synthetic polymers in the joints, which can partially be recycled, but are far from being circular materials. All-wood joints have been used in traditional furniture and construction, but they are not adapted to modern manufacturing techniques and do not fulfill the need for easy assembly.  The aim of this thesis is to explore existing solutions for all-wood joints, as well as relevant manufacturing techniques to create an approach for the development of new joints by practitioners. The research questions are: What are the principles used in existing technical solutions and how can they be used to develop new all-wood furniture joints? What are the most important manufacturing techniques for wood today and how can they be considered in the early-stage development? The general approach in this thesis is to abstract the researched existing technical solutions and manufacturing techniques, ideate on this abstract level, and then detail the concepts on a more concrete level.  As results, fourteen different principles and six different patterns of transformation were extracted from existing solutions and documented in an accessible form. Similarly, seven manufacturing techniques were collected and documented. These were then used in an ideation workshop with practitioners from IKEA, which resulted in six abstract concepts. One of the concepts was further developed into a pre-design and tested with a simulations according to strength and stability requirements from applicable standards.  The testing of the pre-design proved its practicality and a team at IKEA is continuing the development of the concept and planning to manufacture a prototype. This is a good indicator for the usefulness of the approach. Even though it worked well, further exploration of the "toolbox" is recommended, as well as the use of different ideation methods. The full environmental benefits of furniture with all-wood joints are not clear, because only resource depletion was considered and the potential effect is small compared to other industries. Despite this, the thesis shows the potential in circular furniture and encourages IKEA and other furniture companies to delve into the topic of circular furniture more deeply.

Abstract:
During the last century, furniture design has developed to become more financially accessible. Most furniture during the past decades is designed to facilitate the storage and transport of the product to minimise costs for the company. The company can let the customer assemble the furniture themselves at home to reduce the price even more. For customers' to be satisfied, the assembly of the furniture needs to go quickly and easily. The objective of this thesis is to improve today's assembling process of frame-based furniture with a focus on series of FAMILY A at IKEA. To gather information about what problems a customer may encounter today when assembling the furniture different methods are used such as consulting experts and internal benchmarking. A requirement and characteristics matrix is made as a guideline for what the new concepts should fulfil. To get ideas on new concepts that can improve the design, methods such as external benchmarking, patent search and brainstorming are used. The result is 19 different concepts that will improve several different problems. By consulting experts from IKEA in a focus group, one of the concepts named the Indented frame is chosen for further development. A 3-dimensional model is made to visualise the new concept and the Indented frame is adapted to existing components for wall hanging for the previous model of FAMILY A. Based on the 3-dimensional model, drawings are produced for the first prototypes. The prototypes assembly time are measured and a load test is carried out to measure the durability for the new concept. The result is that the new design has a decreased assembly time and the load test shows that there is no significant difference in durability. After the tests, the new concept is evaluated compared to the old design in view of form, function, quality, sustainability and low price. The conclusion is that the new concept would improve the furniture and the customers' experience when assembling.

Abstract:
Blurred LInes seeks to reopen discussion of the scale and interrelation of architecture and furniture, traditionally conceived. It traces the recent history of furniture and architectural making from the high-point of the “built-in” through the manufacturing age, questioning the corresponding stratification of our immediate built environment into building, infill and objects. Engaging modernist and contemporary criticism, it explores a return to unified building in which the architecture might well become the furniture and vice-versa, erasing built hierarchy and asynchronicity. The paper describes lessons learned from modern masters of the discipline from Adolf Loos to Nader Tehrani and attempts to identify key formal, spatial and constructional considerations in the successful integration and “blurring” of this line. All of this comes to bear in the establishment of design experiments to be carried out in studio, testing the possibilities and viability of the paper's theoretical models.

Abstract:
The learning environment is one of our most important workplaces. It is mainly a workplace for students, but also teachers and other staff. It is the environment that these people are surrounded by every day, which makes the physical environment and physical products really important. The educational methods have changed over time, and the physical environment needs to be adapted to today’s learning methods to support and improve learning, and meet the new needs that arise. This Master Thesis is the final part of the Master Programme in Industrial Design Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The work was carried out in spring 2020, in collaboration with the Swedish furniture company Kinnarps AB, based on their concept Next Education. Next Education is one of Kinnarps three concepts, where they offer interior design solutions focusing on the future learning environments. The work has aimed to develop a furniture concept proposal for the informal learning environments, focusing on secondary and upper secondary school, to enhance the learning experience and utilize these areas more efficiently.  The project has been divided into three phases, Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation, a user-centered design process with inspiration from IDEO (2015). The work had an open starting point, where the first phase aimed to visit different schools, from elementary school to upper secondary school, to explore needs and development potential. Observations at the various schools, combined with interviews, survey, and benchmarking were significant parts of the first phase. After that, the work could be directed to a more defined goal and Mission Statement. The Mission Statement was:“Design an inclusive furniture that encourages movement and variation for the secondary and upper secondary school spaces in-between.” The second phase involved developing ideas through creative methods and resulted in three concepts. After feedback and discussions, the final concept could be selected and was progressed to the final Implementation phase, where the concept was further developed. The final concept proposal was then modeled in CAD and visualized through renderings. The work resulted in a modular concept that is both environmentally friendly and inclusive (considering cognitive disabilities), which also contributes to informal learning and improved behavior. The concept, named LeanPod, is a wall-mounted furniture that offers both a screened study place and a support to lean against during short breaks or while waiting. It also has good sound-absorbing properties. Besides, it encourages more standing, which contributes to more variety and better ergonomics. The concept, which is designed with a focus on informal learning environments, contributes to a new way of seeing and using the learning environment. The concept leads to informal learning, that can be used for both self-study as well as an extension of the classroom. It contributes to an approach that learning happens in different areas and utilizes the spaces more efficiently.

Abstract:
Inclusive design caters for the needs and aspirations of as many end users as possible, regardless of their age or ability, positively influencing product design and the built environment, and thus society as a whole. By conducting an inclusive design analysis, with reference to zoological street furniture, thesis content evaluates its effectiveness as an analytical tool, contributing to a heightened understanding of the topic to assist older and disabled people. With zoological gardens functioning as a societal microcosm, findings hold broad implications relating to the application of inclusivity ideals outside of a zoology framework. Research has been underpinned by a constructivist epistemology and interpretivist theoretical perspective. Case study research has been employed as the thesis research methodology, incorporating photography, interviews, and experiments, as convergent research methods. Photography has been used to document zoological street furniture, interviews have provided insights from subject experts, and experiments have gathered feedback from zoological garden visitors. Data collection took place at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, Chester Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo, and Belfast Zoo. Findings have shown that when general guidance for accessible street furniture provision is applied to zoological street furniture, nuanced environmental factors influence the relevance and assertion of inclusive design. This suggests that each inclusive design analysis is context dependant and that contextually aware reinterpretation of access guidance is required to form effective and accessible design solutions. Thesis content explains the unique nature of zoological street furniture accessibility in the United Kingdom to underline this intellectual position.

Abstract:
The project was carried out as a master’s thesis at Royal Institute of Technology, in collaboration withthe kitchen designer Lucks by Robo in Stockholm, Sweden. The purpose of this project was to analyze new demands on office furniture due to hybrid work & homeworking, a result of the covid-19 pandemic. The project was also to apply findings in some type of furniture for the home. Using a human-centered design process the project was to answer the following research questions; (1) What may the future of homeworking look like? (2) What are some common challenges people have when integrating part of their office into their homes and what furniture related needs or desires have emerged? and (3) What are some new characteristics needed to consider when designing furniture for the home office and how can they be applied in the product design? The project carried out a literature study of the hybrid work structure and its future, an extensive userstudy and a brand identity analysis. The project resulted in four main insights where one of the most crucial was the product system needed for an optimal home working environment. Five different groups who represent different levels of needs were identified. Application of the findings were also made through the product development of a piece of furniture for the work environment in the home in a Scandinavian and contemporary style. With a product focus, a height adjustable table was designed to fulfil the identified, functional and aesthetic needs and characteristics for the home office. The product was adapted for the manufacturing and production of Lucks. This resulted in a height adjustable table made of HDF, using four gas springs for the height adjustable mechanism.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the world is facing a lot of serious problems because of the population explosion and the resource shortage. Overcrowded living area creates economic and social issues, and the limitation of material choices not only lowers the quality of house holding merchandise, but also leads to the raise of the price. Due to all these complicated factors, multi-function furniture becomes one of the solutions for space sustainability. Multi-function furniture combines different functions into one piece to control the material consumption, creates opportunities for the interaction between the object and human, and effectively save user's space. At the same time, the price of multi-function furniture, by contrast, is usually more reasonable than purchasing several furniture pieces together. This kind of design becomes more and more popular among young generation, and it is the trend of today's furniture design. Through the exploration of human's living habits and the study of contemporary multi-function furniture, I designed a piece of furniture, Chinese Bench with the concept of space and material sustainability. This thesis is based on the field study of ergonomics and furniture design theory, illustrates the final prototypes of my multi-functional furniture. The design can be served as sit, table and storage, and it emphasizes the importance of space use and valuable customization for user at the same time. The design aims to provide a more efficient living mode in limited space, and reduce the material consumption. At the same time, the pattern and graphic forms are adapted in this design; they can meet people's need for beauty and function at the same time, let the user obtain the sympathy and entertainment from the design

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the revitalization of a once thriving manufacturing city, Gardner, Massachusetts. In the past the city of Gardner was rich with furniture manufacturers. Over the years the manufacture of furniture has left Gardner. The goal of this thesis is to reinvigorate the furniture making and craft back into Gardner. The proposed revitalization of the town was furthered through teaching and the design and production of a new product line. The renovation and retrofit of an existing now abandoned, building. Designing to meet the strategies, methods, and processes of furniture production; merged with an architecture meant to signal both respect for the history of Gardner and a new revitalization; designing from the inside – out. Thoughts about sustainability and environmental design are incorporated into the design. There are a multitude of new building practices and strategies that are explored and will be used to try and form a design that could unite usability, function, aesthetics, and comfort as well as meeting current code and ADA requirements, through retrofitting an existing building. Teaching the former craft of furniture making will ignite revitalization in the downtown area. A new form of universally designed furniture making will be taught and practiced in the facility.

Since the spring and autumn period, Chinese style furniture has developed various types with different functions. Until Ming and Qing Dynasty, its development has reached the peak. No matter the proportion, decoration, or reckon between functions and appearances, each and every can represent the features of Chinese cultures and the sophistication of technique. However, rarely can you see a track of Chinese style furniture in modern furniture. Conversely, Western classical furniture didn’t fade away under the evolution of history; instead, it kept modifying its functions and types to meet the contemporary needs. And because of keeping up with times, western furniture gradually becomes the trend in the world furniture. Yet, under thousand-of-year evolution, Chinese style furniture is definitely qualified to take a place in modern life. Therefore, the purpose of the essay is to discover functions and features of Chinese style furniture. By combining with the design method of modern furniture, we can redesign and improve the Chinese style furniture to extend its spirits, making more people understand its fascination.

"Furniture Longevity: How Mass-Produced Heirloom Furniture Supports Sustainable Consumption." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.9022.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: In recent years, the length of time people use and keep belongings has decreased. With the acceptance of short-lived furniture and inexpensive replacements, the American mentality has shifted to thinking that discarding furniture is normal, often in the guise of recycling. Americans are addicted to landfills. The high cost of landfill real estate and other considerable ecological impacts created by the manufacturing of furniture should persuade people to give their belongings a longer life, but in reality, furniture is often prematurely discarded. This grounded theory study takes a multi-method approach to analyze why some types of furniture are kept longer and to theorize about new ways to design and sell furniture that lasts well past its warranty. Case studies bring new insight into designer intention, manufacturer intent, the world of auction-worthy collectables and heirlooms, why there is a booming second-hand furniture market and the growing importance of informed interior designers and architects who specify or help clients choose interior furnishings. An environmental life cycle assessment compares how the length of furniture life affects environmental impacts. A product's life could continue for generations if properly maintained. Designers and manufacturers hoping to promote longevity can apply the conclusions of this report in bringing new pieces to the market that have a much longer life span. This study finds areas of opportunity that promote user attachment, anticipate future repurposing, and provide services. This thinking envisions a paradigm for furniture that can re-invent itself over multiple generations of users, and ultimately lead to a new wave of desirable heirloom furniture.
