Abstract:
The era of Colonization in Indonesia left many architecture and interior influence. For many years, colonizers especially Dutch and English have developed many architectural building which included their interior elements. Bandung, is one of the cities which enjoyed massive influence of Dutch colonialism design. However the change of people way of living and conducting business, change the city area planning. Most of residential areas now have becoming commercial/business area. Houses area are being leased or sold to be transformed into offices, cafes, restaurant or being entirely demolished into new buildings. There are still residential buildings from this era which are being kept as it is.Either by the owner and endorsed by the appeals of communities intended to preserve them as historical buildings. However there are not yet efforts to preserve the interior elements, especially the furnitures. Hence there are little knowledge about the development of furnitur design as a result of living culture of this period. The ones left are difficult to study as furnituer has shorter life span than building so it could be already altered, moved or sold. And in the meantime new furnitures could be acquired.Hence, it is the intention of this research to study what is left of furnitur from colonialization era in this paticular residential house. To try to documents and analyze what style and influence the commonly called “Dutch Furniture” by Indonesian antique dealers and also by the people in general.. This research will try to find out how and why this particular style still exist through the colonialism era in Indonesia to be compared to the development of styles in the European world.

Abstract:
Furniture, as a design element is an important part of design theory as well as design history. It has acted both as a part of the architectural context and individually in history. It reflects the context of the time, lifestyles, choice and behavior. The manifestation of modernism at the beginning of the 20th century can be indicated as a milestone regarding the whole history of furniture. However, when the history of furniture in Turkey during this time is analyzed, it is observed that one can only come across limited literature. Departing from this lack of historic writing and rewriting, a scientific research project, “DATUMM: Documenting and Archiving Turkish Modern Furniture”, was initiated based on exhibiting, documenting and archiving the history of modern furniture design in Turkey. The aim of this project is to highlight the modern furniture designed and produced in Turkey in the modern periods that can be defined as 1930’s “Cubism” or “Functional Architecture Period”, and the period of “International Style” in 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s. The sense of a comprehensive experience was needed to tell this story, and that is why it is composed of a variety of methods and related outcomes. With the array of outcomes planned to take its place in memory, the aim is to enable a remembered and developing process filled with significant moments to not only put together a collection, but to provide an inclusive impression. The methods and products -online archive, documentary film, catalog, colloquium, and exhibition work together to fulfill this aim. The first stage of the project has now been completed and has brought designers as well as furniture designs of the time together. The paper includes the assessment of the process, as well as the strategies for the future to enable the continuation of the success of the project. Keywords: Turkish modern furniture design, design heritage, design history, archiving, documentation, exhibition

With more and more universities expanding and redesigning their landscape spaces, therefore their outdoor furnitures shape, dimension, quality and usage are also changing and redesigning. One of the significant changes in the design process is the taking of users needs/concerns into account. This change is influenced by a community-based design concept found in public spaces design. In this paper, we propose a Design for Assembly Study (DFA) which is focus on examining the past practice of outdoor wooden Materual furniture design in campus spaces by using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to fill in this missing link. The employment of different matrices to capture the relationship between the voice of customer (VOC) and subsequent design and quality characteristics compose an evaluation framework suitable to fill the gap in the assembly procedure of outdoor wooden frame furniture. The study also produces several insights applies on outdoor wooden furniture design in campus space. Keywords: Wooden Material, Outdoor furniture, Outdoor space, Design Evaluation Procedure

Abstract:
As awareness of the serious environmental impact of the furniture sector increases, design is increasingly recognized as a crucial lever for innovating towards sustainable furniture products. This acknowledgment was emphasized by the European Union in the Circular Economy Action Plan in 2020 and is further emphasized in the forthcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation in 2024. To address the environmental issues stemming from the life cycle of furniture products, which constitute the fundamental part of the furniture system, specific design knowledge and know-how are developed within this study. Although Life Cycle Design (LCD) is a systematic approach to reducing environmental impacts, its application within the furniture system remains limited. This paper adopts a design-based research approach with three research stages and employs various methods including a literature review, case study, workshops, interviews, questionnaires, and a focus group to develop furniture-specific LCD guidelines and a toolkit. As a result, this paper presents furniture-specific LCD guidelines (comprising 7 strategies, 21 sub-strategies, and 154 guidelines), 41 environmentally sustainable furniture case cards, and a toolkit (comprising 4 tools). These guidelines provide comprehensive principles for designers to address environmental impact throughout the furniture’s life cycle. The toolkit guides sustainable furniture LCD, promoting low environmental impact and high design efficiency. These outcomes address the existing gaps in knowledge and tools in this field.

Abstract:
D4S (design for sustainability) is derived from the concept of “sustainable development”. The situation of energy and material resources directly dependent on human beings is deteriorating in the face of the major global problems threatening human development, such as population increase, desertification of the land, climate warming, forest reduction, extinction of species, and energy scarcity. Design plays a very important role in social development. On the one hand, design changes people’s lives. On the other hand, ecological damage, waste of resources, and environmental pollution also arise as a result of design activities. In this context, the concept of sustainable design comes into being. Based on D4S theory, this paper discusses the characteristics of bamboo and its application as a sustainable environmental material in furniture design. The status quo and problems of sustainable furniture design are analyzed using the sustainable design method, and the characteristics and processing technology of bamboo are preliminarily discussed, which provide a useful reference for sustainable design research related to bamboo furniture products. Secondly, the sustainable design strategy of bamboo furniture is put forward, sustainable design methods and principles of bamboo furniture are summarized, and sustainable design is explored through the practice of bamboo furniture design. Finally, an inventory of bamboo furniture design stage is compiled, which is scored according to design, plan implementation, and waste disposal to judge whether bamboo furniture meets the goal of sustainable development.

Abstract:
Product quality and design are two strategies used to win the competition, particularly in the furniture industry. An industry (furniture) is an industry that processes raw materials or semi-finished materials, rattan, and other natural materials into finished goods that can be called furniture, which has high added value and benefits. The method of data collection involves using interviews and observations on simple furniture. The strategic planning method uses the SWOT method to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the furniture business. This analysis involves determining the specific goals of the furniture business and identifying the supporting and non-supporting internal and external factors to achieve that goal. Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to propose a set of flexible design principles for enhancing the flexibility of street furniture to deal with the diverse and changing urban environment. Flexibility is an important but less considered element of public design (otherwise called public environment and facility design), especially in regard to the street furniture that is encountered in everyday life. Taking Hong Kong as a case study, this paper gives an overview of the concepts of flexibility and flexible design, and identifies the current limitations and problems of the current street furniture design practices with respect to the diverse and changing urban environment. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a review of the current literature and relevant documentation, interviews with government officers and different groups of users (including those with special needs), and field observations in Hong Kong’s urban areas over a period of four years, the policies relating to street furniture design in Hong Kong and its management and implementation were evaluated. Findings – The results indicate that the current street furniture in Hong Kong is unable to adapt to or resist changes, can easily cause safety and management problems and is not adaptable to new developments. This paper proposes six principles for the flexible design of street furniture, namely, custom in use, multifunctional use, responds effectively to changing circumstances, easily and conveniently managed, universal in use and sustainable in use. Research limitations/implications – It is difficult to understand the diverse needs and preferences of different users in urban environments. The findings in this paper are based on intensive field work and broad industry experience. To deal with the rapid and ongoing urban change, this paper recommends a further long-term and in-depth study of street furniture. Practical implications – Based on the findings, this paper proposes six flexible design principles for designing street furniture that is sufficiently flexible to meet the rapid and ongoing urban change and diverse users’ needs. Social implications – Different societies and urban areas faced different types and levels of changes. Therefore, a flexible approach to street furniture design is important and necessary. Originality/value – The findings of this paper and the proposed six flexible design principles can provide insight and direction for government officials, design and planning professionals, developers, utility and management companies and communities on how to embed public design (i.e. policy, implementation and management) in the future.

Abstract:
With the development of society, the negative impact of furniture waste on the environment has become increasingly prominent. Therefore, it has become essential to integrate sustainable design principles into furniture manufacturing. This integration can significantly extend the service life of furniture products and reduce the adverse impact on the environment. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to actively conduct market research and an in-depth understanding of users’ needs for sustainable furniture design. Among them, applying the AHP-QFD-AD method to develop a comprehensive design evaluation model is a practical way. This model can translate user requirements into explicit functional requirements and further refine them into specific design parameters. Accurately reflecting user needs in product design greatly improves the accuracy of design evaluation, thereby reducing environmental impact throughout the product life cycle. By implementing this integrated model, we can move furniture products in a sustainable direction. In addition, this method can also enhance the connection between the user and the product, extend the service life of the product, and reduce the waste of furniture. Using sustainable shelving development as an example, we validate the proposed method model. This study reduces the harm of discarded furniture to the environment, providing some support for sustainable furniture design practices.
