Abstract This article deals with the use of the term ‘rococo’ in the English language and more specifically in the United States, where it is today used to describe both the style of eighteenth-century cabinetmakers, and American mid-nineteenth-century furniture. Yet, the term was not favored by furniture makers and dealers before the end of the nineteenth century. Offering a precise analysis of the roots of the term in the United States, this article sheds light on its semantic evolution since the 1830s, through a variety of sources including newspapers, art journals, and ephemera, and in rel

History of furniture in the rococo style
The architecture in this period finally loses all signs of monumentality and tectonics of form: there is no longer division by carrying and carried. Walls and ceilings are made into decorative planes dissected by various panels with a frame. Ornamental forms are asymmetric and always curvilinear; without being subject to any rules, they cover almost entirely the surface of walls and ceilings. The very walls, wood-paneled, are crumbled in choicest light blue, light green, pink and white colors, set off by a gilded ornamentation and hanged on with l

In Romania’s tourism industry, in the last decade, following the European trend, small dimensioned accommodation units have appeared, bearing the name of boutique guesthouses or boutique hotels, depending on their accommodation capacity. The boutique guesthouses offer both accommodation services in rooms with traditional Romanian boyar characteristics, with Saxon and Szechuan influences, as well as food services with the same culinary characteristics. A particularity of these accommodation units is that each room had been furnishing according to a traditional noble theme, using either furnitur

Style is a word that people think they understand. Most people recognize artifacts like buildings and clothes as being exemplars of particular styles, and they know words like Rococo and Art Deco as names for styles. They can recognize stylistic similarities not only in one sort of artifact but also across wide ranges of different things, such as buildings, furniture, artworks, clothes, music, and even manners. However, “style” is a slippery notion: the word has been used in a variety of senses since the ancient Greeks first thought about the differences in how people wrote or painted, and it

The study aims to determine the authorship of furniture from the ASG Large Collection of Fine Arts based on the analysis of author’s marks of representatives of the Sené dynasty. The study examines 18th-century Parisian ébéniste furniture from state collections, auctions, and galleries. The results of attributing eight Rococo and Neoclassical-era armchairs and two canapés from the ASG collection are presented. The study is novel in that it is the first one to publish photographs of Sené family marks on objects from the collection. The study reveals the SENE mark, which may be a late 19th-centu

Furniture history is often considered a niche subject removed from the main discipline of art history, and one that has little to do with the output of painters, sculptors and architects. This thesis, however, connects the key intellectual, artistic and architectural debates surfacing in 'the arts' between 1740 and 1840 with the design of British furniture. Despite the expanding corpus of scholarly monographs and articles dealing with individual cabinet-makers, furniture making in geographic areas and periods of time, little attention has been paid to exploring Gothic furniture made between 17

Abstract This chapter argues that the commodifications of “simple” living and rural vernacular furniture were used as propagandistic tools by the Viennese furniture trade and related magazines, organizations, and retailers in constructing new and refashioning old definitions of Austrian modernity. Specifically, they hoped to sell the idea of Viennese charm to an international audience and shore up cultural and economic stability in the wake of World War I.
