Introduction: We envisioned using phase transfer catalysis (PTC) to develop asymmetric carba-6p- electrocyclisations. We believed that the configurational lability of 6p systems could be reduced by constraining them within a ring system. On the instigation of A/Prof C. S. P. McErlean I investigated the rapid synthesis of fused ring compounds by a key polyene cyclisation. Chapter 1 sets the scene by highlighting deficiencies in literature syntheses of selected fused-ring compounds, where synthetic strategies are often suboptimal. In the first section several sUbstituted l,2,3-benzotriazinones were prepared with a view to observing their rate of deazoniation. It ,was envisaged that a kinetic analysis of this reaction would aid the elucidation of the nature of a hitherto controversial reaction intermediate. The first deals with the synthesis of [2.0.n] cyclobutenes via the photo [2+2] cycloaddition of propargyl alcohol with an appropriate unsaturated anhydride followed by their thermal electrocyc1ic ring opening. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron death and subsequent muscle atrophy. We present FusionSim, a modeling framework capable of cycle-accurate simulation of a complete x86-based computer system with (a) a CPU and a GPU on the same die, and (b) a CPU and a GPU connected as separate components. We use FusionSim to characterize the performance of the Rodinia benchmarks on fused and discrete systems. We demonstrate that the speed-up due to fusion is highly correlated with the input data size. We demonstrate that for benchmarks that benefit most from fusion, a 9.72x speed-up is possible for small problem sizes. This speedup reduces to 1.84x with medium problem sizes. We

A series of cis- and trans-bis(ethynyl)platinum complexes containing dimethyldihydropyrene (DHP) photochromic compounds were synthesized from RDHPCCH (R = H, CH3CO, PhCO, 1-naphthoyl and benzo[e]) and platinum chloride with appropriate ancillary ligands (PEt3, PPh3, dppe, bipy and phen). The complexes were studied using mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 31P and 195Pt) and IR. The X-ray structural information for bis(DHP-ethynyl) platinum complexes 44, 45, 47, 49, and 52 revealed that the Pt complexes possessed a square planar geometry at the metal centers.
