Abstract Control has served a central role in many theories of job stress, as well as other areas of organizational research (Ganster and Fusilier, 1989). It has been implicated as a potential cause of both physical health and psychological well-being (e.g., Evans and Carrere, 1991; Ganster and Fusilier, 1989). A more complex moderator role has also been suggested in the control/ demands model (Karasek, 1979), whereby control buffers the negative effects of job stressors. Although the relation of control with health and well-being has been well established (see Ganster and Fusilier, 1989; Spector, 1986), the moderator role has not received consistent support. Furthermore, in much of the job stress literature, the exact mechanisms by which control affects people has not been completely delineated. It is the purpose of this chapter to help clarify these issues by presenting a model of the job stress process that includes control as a central variable.

Abstract This chapter recounts Anna Gordon’s marriage to Andrew Brown, a minister in Falkland, Fife, and her nephew’s trip to the new “States United” of America to visit his mother and siblings in Virginia. Andrew Brown, chaplain to the 21st Regiment of Foot, the Royal North British [i.e. Scottish] Fusilier Regiment, during the American Revolution, met and married Anna Gordon in Old Aberdeen. They moved to Falkland, where they lived in the derelict Falkland Palace because there was no manse for the minister. “Willy o Douglass-dale,” a “happily ever after” ballad is one I imagine she sang to him. Falkland’s church business is sketched in, including the hiring of a new schoolmaster, who later followed them to Tranent. Robert Eden Scott visited his mother at Gordonsdale in Virginia for several years, and through a number of his father’s relatives met the new president George Washington at a levée. He returned to Aberdeen to take up a position in King’s College. He quickly gained the respect of all who knew him for his knowledge and cultivation. He met and married Rachel Forbes, a gentlewoman with aristocratic connections. And then Thomas Gordon died; he was eighty-three years of age and had taught at King’s College for sixty-one years. His unmarried daughter Margaret followed him to the grave a few months later, leaving everything to her sister, Anna Brown.

Abstract ‘First World War Identities’ focuses on the military phenomenon of the mobilization and enlistment of English men with Welsh antecedents into active service units during the First World War. In particular, it addresses the identity politics behind the establishment of the 15th (1st London Welsh), Royal Welch Fusiliers. It underlines how, for a cohort of male English volunteers, Wales and Welshness held some form of meaning at the point of their military enlistment. It analyses Lloyd George’s wartime relationship with the London Welsh soldier, William Pugh Hinds, the son of John Hinds MP, to illuminate the ways in which politicized displays of Welsh patriotism in the metropolis were implicated in the military voluntarism of a cohort of English soldiers. It provides a case study of the dual identity construction of David Jones who immortalized his military service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers in the epic poem, In Parenthesis (1937).
