Mgweba, Sikho. "Student expectations of future life roles." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6840.

Abstract:
Work and family are the two most significant life domains for most individuals (Greenhaus, Collins & Shaw, 2003). Compositional and structural changes in the work and family domains over the past few decades such as: dual-earner couples and single working parents, the decline of traditional gender roles and a movement toward egalitarian family structures have rendered increased understanding and reconciliation of family and working life (Steil, 2007). Such work- family considerations, however, are not only important for adults within the workforce, but also for young adults who are in the process of making future family and career decisions, and are about to enter the workforce (Westring & Ryan, 2011). The purpose of this study was to explore how students understand and distinguish between different life roles, and therefore gain insight into the expectations they have of their future life roles. Using Kelly's Repertory Grids Technique, qualitative data was obtained through fifteen interviews with postgraduate students from the University of Cape Town. The data was analysed using a combination of thematic analysis and frequency counts. The reliability of the results was ensured by conducting two sets of reliability checks. Following thematic analysis, eight dyadic themes emerged: self-interest- selflessness, demanding- relaxing, collaborationindependence, freedom-restriction, affective- unaffective, boring- enjoyment, structuredflexible, and personal satisfaction- obligation. These themes revealed values and attributes students perceive as significant in the construal of their future life roles. The results were interpreted and discussed in light of existing research and literature in the field.

Abstract:
The gains derived from human capital can be affected by life –changing decisions. In my thesis I explore three of these decisions: the decision to migrate abroad (Chapter 1), the decision to migrate inside your own country (Chapter 2) and the decision to become an entrepreneur (Chapter 3). The three decisions involve a great deal of uncertainty that individuals express through expectations. I study these decisions by analyzing subjective expectations of future college graduate students. In chapter one I use the survey and data collection of Delavande and Zafar and for the second and third chapter I designed one survey and did the data collection in Bogotá, Colombia. Beyond the study of the determinants of individual migration and entrepreneurial expectations as strategies to allocate human capital, I contribute to the literature on subjective expectations. Chapter 1 investigates the role of subjective expectations and beliefs in the decision of migration of Pakistani college students to USA, Saudi Arabia and China. Findings suggest that students from different socioeconomic backgrounds and exposure to Western ideas react differently to the same potential migration destinations, not only in their preference for earnings but also in their individual preference for risks and amenities. Chapter 2 investigates what should be the incentives that a government must provide to promote the migration of future graduates from a developed urban centre to less developed ones in Colombia, as a strategy for regional development. The expected earnings, expectations about provision of schools, access to health and roads are the most important determinants to promote this specific type of migration in Colombia. Chapter 3 examines the role of earning expectations and personal characteristics on the subjective probability of becoming an entrepreneur of future graduates from Bogotá, Colombia. The expected earnings as an entrepreneur together with the preference for independence and having a previous entrepreneurial experience in the family affects positively the subjective probability of becoming an entrepreneur. These results are similar to other studies giving evidence that it is feasible to use subjective expectations as a measure of entrepreneurial intentions.

Abstract:
This study main goal is analyze what are the expectations regarding the school from parents of students, with and without special educational needs (SEN), of two schools: Escola Básica Integrada Francisco Ferreira Drummond and Escola Secundária Vitorino Nemésio, which attend the 2nd and 3rd cycles of primary and secondary school education, in Terceira Island. The adopted methodology was based on a mixed approach, covering methods of quantitative and qualitative types, with a questionnaire adapted from Sanches (2007) and Araújo (2008), which was used to identify the expectations of parents regarding the school. 278 parents were surveyed, 142 were from Escola Secundária Vitorino Nemésio and 136 parents from Escola Básica Integrada Francisco Ferreira Drummond. The findings indicate that most of the sampled individuals stated that went to school between one and three times during the current school year, and the initiative of going to school departed from parents, indicating that they have an active participation in school. It can be concluded also that the ideal school for parents should develop skills to prepare young people for integration into society, for entering the labor market and to build responsible citizens, fair and complete. Concerning the expectations, families showed high expectations related to school purposes by placing in this institution the hope for a promising future for their children.

This study focuses on the impact of societal change and related societal problems on the black youth of post-apartheid South Africa. It is argued that adolescents' perspectives on their future in this country could be negatively influenced by the extent of societal problems which are currently experienced in South Africa. Other findings indicate that the influence of traditional cultural norms and values on the black youth is slowly but surely diminishing. Middle class Black adolescents tend to share the general consumerism of South Africa's wealthy classes, and many are detached from the history of the struggle for political freedom. Amidst severe societal problems such as poverty, unemployment, HIV / AIDS and violent crime, the findings of an empirical investigation into the views of 391 black adolescents from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds indicate that a general spirit of optimism and independence exists, paired with a strong desire to escape the trappings of poverty and to fulfil their career and social expectations.

Abstract:
The process of thought applied to establish a thesis topic has been one of non-acceptance of the situations on face value. As such the future profitability of the Nissan Stamping Plant has been considered. A mental model has been established in the authors mind that a definite problem exists within this area. This has led to the formulation of a framework that can be used to handle the problem of low profits that will eventually lead to the closure of the operation. Status-Quo has remained within the operations for almost 25 years, but now changes in Government Legislation pose threats. This leads to the question of how can the profits be improved. The framework was built around a philosophy of continual search for the truth. The scientific method has been applied to understand the theories of a single or double loop response whilst proceeding through the Plan, Do, Check, and Action cycle.

Abstract:
Lifelong learning is known and well-studied in the West, but many times the findings of studies conducted in Europe and USA are simplified to universal findings. Although the world is not that simplistic, it is often argued that the East has a more collectivistic culture while the West is leaning more towards an individualistic. Only a few studies have been conducted on the subject in the East and those studies have a macro-perspective with a focus on political and economic values, while the individual perspective is left unexplored. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of what Thai students expect from their professional future from a lifelong learning perspective and how culture in terms of individualistic and collectivistic dimensions influences these expectations. This is a qualitative study where our empirical data come from ten semi-structured interviews, with last year’s university students in Bangkok. The findings showed that the students’ expectations are influenced by the collectivistic culture while at the same time being connected with the rapid moving society around them. This could be seen as a divided thinking between old traditions and new possibilities, between individualistic dreams and collectivistic loyalty. The findings suggest that lifelong learning in Thailand is influenced by more than just the collectivistic dimension, as previous research shows. We offer a consideration of the situation above and believe young adults are finding their own way, trying to please both sides of a complex situation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the manner in which electric lighting was applied during the first decade after Edison's Menlo Park demonstration, and how these applications influenced American public perceptions of the technology, particularly in relation to imagined future uses and social meanings. Specifically, the thesis focuses on expectations and perceptions of electric lighting as applied or related to three important aspects of late nineteenth century American society: crime, warfare, and aesthetics and health. Using these three themes, this thesis illustrates how electric lighting was viewed during the 1880's and what hopes and images were attached to it.

Abstract:
In today’s platform economy, the postal industry has been disrupted with emerging technologies and changing consumer needs. While the physical letter volumes continue to decrease, postal operators seek new sources of customer value through digital innovations. Digital mailbox is an example of a multisided platform that creates value by connecting two or more customer groups and facilitating interaction or transactions between them. In order to successfully attract both supply and demand to these platforms, the platform provider needs to understand both sides of the market The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of the needs and expectations of the biggest consumer group of the future, Generation Z, regarding their interaction with different sectors in the Finnish society. Furthermore, the research aim was to shed light on the possible implications that these needs and expectations would have on platform providers. The context for the study was Finland. The study was conducted as a case study for PostNord, a communications and logistics supplier in the Nordics. A qualitative research design included conducting 12 semi-structured interviews with Generation Z representatives, born between 1995 and 2001. Additionally, a mirroring workshop with industry experts was conducted in order to include the perspective of the case company. The results were analysed using a thematic analysis method. The findings of this study show that Generation Z’s choice for device and channels is contextual, depending on the importance and urgency of the matter. Gen Z prefers to receive their communication on one platform instead of many, and often on mobile application. This generational cohort has high expectations regarding the speed of the communication. They expect fast responses that also enable a meaningful dialogue, yet on their own terms. The findings indicate that Gen Z values the human element even in digital communication. They want to receive information that is not only relevant to them, but arrives on the right time and comes from a competent, familiar source. These findings have implications on not only PostNord as a platform provider, but all the potential ecosystem partners.

Abstract:
With our growing population, we are facing great challenges when it comes to our water consumption. As Stockholm is growing in both population and size, the city’s provider of drinking water, Stockholm Water and Waste, is looking into approaches like smart systems and persuasive strategies that tries to help citizens use water for domestic purposes in more sustainable ways. Some see these approaches as a natural part of the future of urban development and they have already been implemented at several locations around the globe. However, smart systems and persuasive strategies have seen an upswing in critique lately and it have been argued that they tend to treat householders as something separated from the socio-technical context they live in. As a response to this critique, a wide range of suggestions for future development of smart systems and persuasive strategies have been made. While a lot of these suggestions are based on studies that evaluates already existing systems and tend to focus on how to improve them, they still convey a scenario where these systems are a natural part of our future urban lives. However, little research has been made that tries to understand the citizens’ perspective on these systems before they are implemented. By using a future study approach that includes citizens in reflective and exploratory activities of non-existing future smart systems for managing domestic water services, this study aims at exploring their concerns and expectations of said systems and questions the wants and needs for them begin with. This study reveals that citizens might have great concerns when it comes to questions of privacy and control and how smart systems and persuasive strategies run the risk of problematizing individuals. This study also reveals that citizens might be more interested in negotiating and improving current services and infrastructure than having technology negotiate their everyday lives.

"The current use and future expectations of business travellers regarding mobile travel applications." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60524.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile travel applications provide a wide range of services to support any stage of the travel process and have therefore become indispensable to travel distributors and travellers alike. While the use of mobile applications in the context of leisure travel has been the topic of several studies, their use by business travellers has enjoyed relatively little academic attention and it has become evident that a need exists for more substantial scientific research in this area. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the current use of mobile applications by business travellers before, during and after their business trips, and to determine their needs regarding the development of applications for future use by taking into consideration the different profiles of business travellers and the different characteristics of the trips they undertake. The findings of this study contribute to the available literature relating to business travel by extending our knowledge of business travellers and their use and future expectations of mobile travel applications. The data for this study was collected by means of an internet-based questionnaire distributed to approximately 13 098 business travellers who had booked domestic and/or international trips with Carlson Wagonlit Travel South Africa during the period from 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2014. Due to the overwhelming amount of data received, a cluster analysis was done. The results showed that female business travellers typically earn slightly less than their male counterparts, that fewer have degrees and that they find mobile travel applications more useful during the booking stage, whereas males find them more useful during the travelling stage. The results also give an indication of the profile of the average business traveller and provide information on the expectations of business travellers with regard to the further development of travel applications for future use.

Abstract:
Typically, when we think of Sweden it is often thought in terms of a harmonious society where diversity, equality and freedom has intertwined itself into the daily fabric of society. This essay explores the experiences and expectations of immigrants who arrived in Sweden in the 1980’s. It is a qualitative study and uses semi-structured interviews and focuses in particular on immigrants of Syriac and Assyrian decent who arrived in this time period. In general, this paper aims to look at how and what information they had been communicated before entering the country and whether or not their own personal expectations were met in regard to access to food, shelter and education. The overarching research question is: the experiences of immigrants and aid workers alike – are they in line with the communicated expectations they had upon entering Sweden. The aim is to explore what motivated the immigrants to choose Sweden in particular and if there were any hindrances or predispositions that they encountered. The results that emerged from the qualitative data suggest in general the move to Sweden was based on the communicated experiences of relatives and the church, thus what they had expected and experienced was similar. This essay is guided by a constructivist epistemology with a hermeneutic perspective that aims to describe, analyse and draw conclusions based on the purpose of the case study.

Mottley, Eugenia L. "Adolescents' Social Capital Resources, Future Life Expectations, and Subsequent Citizenship Participation as Young Adults." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/25976.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, conceptual models of young adult citizenship participation eight years post high school using Putnamâ s (1993) theory of social capital are tested. This study uses a longitudinal database. Specifically, the models posit that accumulation of more social capital resources during adolescence will be associated with more positive future life expectations related to educational, occupational, and family life outcomes. Subsequently, these more positive future life expectations and social capital resources will be associated with a higher degree of citizenship participation (as measured by voting behavior, community integration and volunteerism) as young adults. Measures from the 1990, 1992 and 2000 waves of the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS:88) dataset were used. The models were examined using structural equation modeling procedures. Findings indicate that school and community social capital had mixed results regarding their effects on the final outcome variables. Teacher interactions were not found to have a statistically significant direct effect on any of the three citizenship participation outcome variables. But this result should be viewed with caution due to possible measurement problems with the construct of teacher interactions. Peer interactions did have a statistically significant, direct, effect on community integration and volunteerism, but it did not have a direct effect on voting behavior. Participation in extracurricular school activities did have a small, direct, effect on all three outcome variables. Participation in community sports activities had a positive direct effect on community integration, a small negative effect on voting behavior, and no statistically significant effect on volunteerism. Finally, participation in other types of community activities had the largest direct effects on all three citizenship participation outcome variables. The adolescent social capital variables of teacher interactions, peer interactions, and participation in other types of community activities for tenth graders did have positive, direct effects on future life expectations for twelfth graders. Extracurricular activities participation and community sports participation were not found to have an effect on future life expectations. Future life expectations were found to have a very small, but statistically significant, positive, direct effect on all three citizenship participation variables. These findings indicate that some adolescent social capital resources can have positive direct effects on the long term, young adult, educational outcome of citizenship participation. But it varies by type of social capital resource and by the particular aspect of citizenship behavior being measured.

Paxton, Rae-Julie. "Adolescent girls living in Rustenburg : gender roles, gender relations and future expectations as women." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50247.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Arguing from a social constructionist perspective and using a qualitative methodology the aim of the present study was to explore different dimensions of gender amongst a group of adolescent girls between the ages of 14 and 18 years living in Rustenburg, South Africa. More specifically it explores and describes the following aspects of gender amongst these girls: (a) how young adolescent girls living in Rustenburg perceive gender roles in general and how they perceive their own roles in particular (b) their gender relations with other adolescents and (c) their views on and expectations of the future as women. The rationale for selecting Rustenburg as the geographical area of research is due to its semi-rural location. While rural communities are generally perceived to be more conservative than urban areas they do not escape modernizing influences such as the mass media. An underlying theme of the present study is thus to ascertain whether or not the girls in Rustenburg still have relatively conservative perceptions regarding gender. The fmdings of the present study reveal that the participants have broken away from conforming to traditional roles assigned to women and would like to combine new modem roles with existing traditional roles. It is also clear that the mass media has a considerable influence in this regard. According to the respondents society values .a woman that can succeed in being a good mother, wife and home-keeper as well as being a career woman. Most of the participants want to fulfil these multiple roles. The advantages of being career women, according to these participants, are that such women are independent and fmancially self-reliant. Regarding gender relations, friendships with girls and boys are of equal importance to the respondents. On the one hand sufficient common ground exists to interact comfortably with boys, while on the other hand interacting with boys is seen as useful in obtaining insight into the life world of boys. However, a general opinion held by the girls is that they feel more comfortable to discuss more personal and intimate topics with their girl friends. Relationships with younger girls and factors influencing popularity among girls were also explored as themes. Future expectations that are shared by participants are that they would like to complete their school education and attend a technikon or university to further their education. Their future career expectations cover a wide range of occupational choices. Most of the participants want to get married in future - the ages varying between 25 and 30. They would also like to have children but only once they have established a good career. Their main concerns for the future are whether or not there will be job opportunities for them in the careers that they want to pursue.

Streicher, Pamela J. "The effects of parental divorce on adult children's expectations of their own future families." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/862278.

Abstract:
A large body of literature addresses the effects of divorce on children. Only a small part of this literature, however, addresses the effects of divorce on young adult children. This smaller body of literature addresses the emotional effects of divorce, the way adult children of divorce perceive their families of origin, and the intergenerational transmission of divorce hypothesis. The present study examined the nature of the relationship between parental divorce and its effects on the expectations of adults children's own future families. It is hypothesized that the structure of the family of origin plays a significant role in these expectations and that young adults from intact families will differ significantly from young adults from divorced families. One hundred sixty-seven students from a midwestern university participated in this study. Participants completed two versions of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales III (FACES III). These two versions were for (1) the family of origin and (2) the future family. Participants also completed a demographic questionnaire. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) Family structure in the family of origin will predict expectations of young adults' own future familes; (2) Family functioning in the family of origin will predict expectations of young adults' own future families; (3) Family structure and family functioning in the family of origin will be related to each other in predicting the expectations of young adults' own future families.Contrary to expectations, only one of the three hypotheses was supported. Family functioning in the family of origin did predict expectations of family functioning in young adults' future families. This was true of both the cohesion and the adaptability contructs. Family structure did not predict expectations of young adults' own future families. An interaction of family structure and family functioning in the family of origin did not predict expectations of future families above and beyond what the two variables could predict independently. Implications of these findings and limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Lightfoot, Katie Rose. "Women's experiences of undiagnosed breech birth and the effects on future childbirth decisions and expectations." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2018. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/33278/.

Full text
Abstract:
An unexpected breech birth in labour affects 1 woman in every 100 in the UK (Walker, 2013). Not only does an undiagnosed breech presentation pose a clinical problem in obstetrics and midwifery, but importantly, it often creates an emergency situation for women where there is little time to plan, prepare or potentially choose what the next steps should be for themselves and their baby. This could have implications for a woman's psychological wellbeing. This qualitative study aims to give voice to women who have experienced an undiagnosed breech birth and will consider the influence this experience may have had on future thinking around childbirth. Above all, women's feelings are the main point of consideration rather than mode of delivery or clinical outcomes of breech birth; both of which have dominated the research in this area. Pre-existing textual data from discussion boards on Mumsnet, a UK parenting website, were examined. Inductive thematic analysis of 83 messages using the 6-step process advocated by Braun and Clarke (2006) was carried out and five key themes were identified: ‘I was unlucky though, dc3 [darling child number 3] was undiagnosed breech’, ‘Obstetricians are not the enemy! ‘,‘They told me it is not my decision but the decision of the consultants’, ‘His head was pretty misshapen and his legs were up by his head’ and ‘Feeling like a crap mum’. Two sub-themes were also identified, ‘Just got to work through it and keep on swimming’ and ‘You just don’t know what will happen!’ The findings suggest that women generally regard undiagnosed breech birth as a negative experience that gives rise to feelings of fear, anxiety and anger. They feel they are not listened to by healthcare professionals and lose all choices regarding their own care. Future thinking around childbirth is also impacted, with some women deciding to have no more children due to their undiagnosed breech birth. The role of Health Psychologists is key in providing support for women who are experiencing negative emotional impacts as a result of an undiagnosed breech birth.

Abstract:
The last few decades have seen a growing body of research on narcissism, however few studies have examined the relationship between subclinical narcissism and future orientation. The proposed study will examine how grandiose and vulnerable types of narcissism influence future orientation, and whether anxiety, depression, impulsivity and sense of control play mediating roles in this relationship. It is also hypothesized that anxiety will play a mediating role between future orientation and vulnerable narcissism, but not between grandiose narcissism and future orientation. Finally, it is hypothesized that grandiose and vulnerable narcissism will be correlated within individuals. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be used to test the hypotheses, and the a priori model is expected to have a good fit to the data. This study will further our understanding about how narcissists view their futures, and whether this is influenced by mediating factors.

Abstract:
Bakground : A new kind of birthing center, providing a new concept of maternal care is about to open in a city located in the eastern part of India. Being part of a new concept in maternal care and having the opportunity to work at a new advanced multispecialty hospital as well as being a newly graduated nurse can create a lot of expectations in which we aim to explore. Aim : The aim was to explore newly graduated nurse's expectations before the opening of a natural birthing center in the eastern part of India. Method : Qualitative interviews were chosen as a data collecting method. The participants were five newly graduated nurses. A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach and a manifest content was selected for analyzing the collected data. Findings: Four categories with sub-categories were found. They were Unknown future, In relation with patients and relatives, Opportunities to develop as a nurse and to become a good nurse. Conclusion : In this study it was seen that the nurses felt unsure in their role and about their future. To be able to care for patients and relatives as a newly graduated nurse in a professional manner (and make them feel safe), it is important to have the confidence to feel safe in the nursing role. It is also of importance that the organization allows the nurse to develop by creating attuned climates for this, all to become a good nurse.

Davys, Deborah. "Siblings of adults who have a learning disability : personal wishes, reality and parental expectations for future support." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2013. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/315693/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sibling relationships are significant in the lives of people who have a learning disability. They usually form a major part of their social network and there is an expectation at government, social and family level that siblings will provide some degree of support in the event of parental decline. A mixed methodological approach was taken, utilizing a survey in Stage one and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) at Stage two. In the latter, 15 face to face semi-structured interviews were conducted to support the research aim of listening to the voices of adult siblings of people who have a learning disability, regarding their personal wishes or preferences in relation to a future support role. Three overarching themes were identified from nine superordinate themes: impact of learning disability, services, and sibling needs and recommendations. Key messages raised were that learning disability has a significant impact upon sibling lives throughout the life course; although the areas and degree of impact varies widely between individuals, most participants voiced concern about the future, particularly when older parents would no longer be able to provide care. Service issues were raised, as was the difference in role and function between families and service providers. In order to better meet sibling needs and recommendations for lifelong support, information and advice, more productive partnerships need to be established, particularly in the area of futures planning. This research presents the clear perspective that tangible benefits may be available as a direct result of association with learning disability. It also provides a deeper insight into parental response to learning disability alongside further rational for a lack of futures plans and why siblings may not want to co-reside with a learning disabled person. These findings have relevance to service providers, siblings of learning disabled people, students in the field of health and social care and wider society.

Abstract:
This study aims to find and analyze young university students’ perspectives on gender equality in the labour market and family life, more precisely their expectations facing their professional and family lives based on their ideals on gender roles in these two realms. We analyze as such one of the most relevant themes in contemporary society: youth’s transition to adult life, intending to answer the question: What are young final year students’ expectations on their entrance into the labour market and the connection between paid work and family life, keeping in mind their ideals towards gender roles on work and family life? To do so, a survey through questionnaire was applied to 288 final year students at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences, that had then its resulting statistical data analyzed, based on a gender comparison analysis. The results attained prove that, although there are no significant differences between the sexes in what concerns expectations towards the link between work and family lives in general, more egalitarian gender equality expectations towards this link are found on women. On young men while more traditional values are present, tending to valorize mainly paid work instead of housework and care. We can also see that men have higher confidence levels regarding the entrance and path in the world of work, in comparison with women, although this difference is not statistically relevant.

Nöstl, Anatole. "How memory of the past, a predictable present and expectations of the future underpin adaptation to the sound environment."

Full text
Abstract:
By using auditory distraction as a tool, the main focus of the present thesis is to investigate the role of memory systems in human adaptation processes towards changes in the built environment. Report I and Report II focus on the question of whether memory for regularities in the auditory environment is used to form predictions and expectations of future sound events, and if violations of these expectations capture attention. Collectively the results indicate that once a stable neural model of the sound environment is created, violations of the formed expectations can capture attention. Furthermore, the magnitude of attentional capture is a function of the pitch difference between the expected tone and the presented tone. The second part of the thesis is concerned with, (a) the nature (i.e. the specificity) of the neural model formed in an auditory environment and, (b) whether complex cognition in terms of working memory capacity modulates habituation rate. The results in Report III show that the disruptive effect of the deviation effect diminishes with the number of exposures over time, and also as a function of working memory capacity. The aim of Report IV was to investigate the nature (and specificity) of the neural model formed in an auditory environment. If the neural model is fashioned around a specific stimulus then an observable increase of response latency should occur in conjunction with the deviant change. The results in Experiment 1 in Report IV, however, show that the habituation rate remained the same throughout the experiment. To further test the specificity of the neural model the modalityof the deviant event was switched (from auditory to visual and vice versa) in Experiment 3 in Report IV. The collective findings indicate that the formed neural model may be of a more general nature than previously suggested. The aim of Experiment 2 in Report IV was to investigate what properties of the sound environment underpin habituation rate, more specifically if predictability of a deviant trial facilitates the habituation process. The finding that the habituation rate was similar whether there was a fixed temporal interval between the deviant trials or a random interval suggests that the amount of occurrences (i.e. number of deviant trials) determines habituation rate, not the predictability of a deviant trial.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the educational aspirations and future expectations of working class youth in an all-female Catholic high school. The ethnographic methods of primarily interviews and participant observation were used to discover the plans and the decision processes of approximately 21% of the senior class. Sixty girls were interviewed four weeks before graduation, as well as 20 teachers and administrators. Almost 100% of the sample (59) planned to attend college the following fall. While most institutions were competitive, only one planned to attend a most competitive, most selective institution, although several met the admissions requirements to do so. One-fourth of the sample planned to attend community colleges. The institution helped to facilitate the process of college entrance. However, many of the girls' decisions were determined before high school, and most were influenced by family members, most of whom had never attended a finished college. It was observed and reported by the girls that the all-female environment enhanced their educational experiences.

Abstract:
Objective: Psychological thriving reflects a trajectory of growth over time as opposed to scaling back expectations. Whether thriving is a product, precursor, or process of coping with arthritis-related limitations is unclear. We examined associations between thriving, coping efficacy, and expectations for future growth in individuals with arthritis, and the relations of thriving to depressive symptoms and retrospective perceptions of personal growth over a six-month period. Methods: A sample of 423 people with arthritis completed measures of thriving, coping efficacy, depressive symptoms, and expectations for future growth; 168 individuals completed a six-month follow-up survey. Structural equation modeling analyses compared three possible models of psychological thriving, controlling for disease-related variables. Hierarchical regression analyses of the cross-lagged associations of thriving with retrospective perceptions of positive personal change and depressive symptoms were also conducted. Results: Structural equation analyses suggest that the process model in which thriving and coping efficacy jointly predicted expectations for future growth best fit the data. Baseline thriving was also associated with retrospective perceptions of personal growth at follow-up and fewer depressive symptoms at baseline and follow-up, after controlling for disease-related variables. Conclusion: Overall, these findings suggest that psychological thriving is synergistically related to coping efficacy, and to expectations for future growth and less depression, in people with arthritis. Importantly, our findings support the notion that psychological thriving is more than scaling back expectations, and that thriving may be an important quality to cultivate to address the burden of depression in people with arthritis.

Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för socialt arbete, 1993. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-101302.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to find out: (a) the role played by various agencies in the discharge procedure and (b) former psychiatric patients" own perspective on their social network, quality of life and future life expectations. The theoretical framework is based on Mead's symbolic interactionism, Asplund's interpretation of Tönnies' concepts Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft and Buber's dialogical philosophy. Descriptive, quantitative and qualitative data were gathered on four occasions from May 1984 to December 1986. On three occasions professionals provided information by means of structured questionnaires. Information on the last occasion was provided by former patients through interviews by means of a semistructured questionnaire. Seventy-three patients were discharged during the research period. I was able to follow 50 through all four stages. Fifty-three patients were interviewed. Other agencies were hardly involved at all in the discharge procedure except for the provision of home support. The duration of and stigma attached to mental illness, being without work and gender seemed to have the most influence on the primary network. The same issues (with the exception of gender), together with place of residence, financial difficulties and inability to exert influence over one's own situation influenced the former patients' quality of life and their expectations of the future. Special attention has been given to their occupational situation and to their relations to the professional network. Work opportunities were highly valued but most of the former patients were excluded from the labour market. The LFP groups satisfaction with the home care workers and dissatisfaction with the psychiatric professionals seemed to be due to the former's ability to undertake a ’caring’ relationship.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the study was to obtain an estimate of Upon-Release Future Expectations of prisoners, and to examine the associations between these expectations and prisoners&rsquo
psychological problems. In addition, the effect of being parent, and of time left before release on Upon-Release Future Expectations of prisoners and their psychological problems were aimed to be examined. For these purposes, firstly, Upon-Release Future Expectations Scale was developed, and its reliability was investigated. Positive-Negative Affect Scale, Beck Depression Scale, the Trait Form of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Hopelessness Scale were used to test its criterion-related validity. Then, in order to reveal the associations between the variables, two sets of regression analyses were conducted. In the first regression analysis, age, gender, time left before release, parental status (i.e., being a parent or not), and scores of Rosenbaum&rsquo
s Learned Resourcefulness Scale and Basic Personality Traits Inventory were used as independent variables, and revealed factors of Upon-Release Future Expectations (i.e., Future Conditions, Perceived Risks, and Confidence in Coping) were entered as dependent variables. In the second regression analysis, besides the independent variables of the first analysis, factors of Upon-Release Future Expectations were used as independent variables, and depression, trait anxiety, and hopelessness scores were entered as dependent variables. The results did not reveal a main effect for time left before release and parental status. Both the significant associations and the insignificant associations between the dependent and the independent variables were discussed. The study was conducted with 96 female and 84 male prisoners.

Riso, Mary. "The good death : expectations concerning death and the afterlife among evangelical Nonconformists in England 1830-1880." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/19976.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines six factors that helped to shape beliefs and expectations about death among evangelical Nonconformists in England from 1830 down to 1880: the literary conventions associated with the denominational magazine obituaries that were used as primary source material, theology, social background, denominational variations, Romanticism and the last words and experiences of the dying. The research is based on an analysis of 1,200 obituaries divided evenly among four evangelical Nonconformist denominations: the Wesleyan Methodists, the Primitive Methodists, the Congregationalists and the Baptists. The study is distinctive in four respects. First, the statistical analysis according to three time periods (the 1830s, 1850s and 1870s), close reading and categorisation of a sample this large are unprecedented and make it possible to observe trends among Nonconformists in mid-nineteenth-century England. Second, it evaluates the literary construct of the obituaries as a four-fold formula consisting of early life, conversion, the living out of the faith and the death narrative as a tool for understanding them as authentic windows into evangelical Nonconformist experience. Third, the study traces two movements that inform the changing Nonconformist experience of death: the social shift towards middle-class respectability and the intellectual shift towards a broader Evangelicalism. Finally, the thesis considers how the varying experiences of the dying person and the observers and recorders of the death provide different perspectives. These features inform the primary argument of the thesis, which is that expectations concerning death and the afterlife among evangelical Nonconformists in England from 1830 down to 1880 changed as reflections of larger shifts in Nonconformity towards middle-class respectability and a broader Evangelicalism. This transformation was found to be clearly revealed when considering the tension in Nonconformist allegiance to both worldly and spiritual matters. While the last words of the dying pointed to a timeless experience that placed hope in the life to come, the obituaries as compiled by the observers of the death and by the obituary authors and editors reflected changing attitudes towards death and the afterlife among nineteenth-century evangelical Nonconformists that looked increasingly to earthly existence for the fulfilment of hopes.

Being a controversial subject, due to the debates on the subject and the associated prejudices, the prostitution practiced by men lacks scientific information. Assuming the concept of prostitution as a activity carried out by men and women, whose main objective is the exchange of favors, involving or not sexual relations, the present exploratory study had as main objective to characterize the life trajectories of the men who prostitute themselves. For that, in-depth life histories of 4 prostituted men have been elaborated. Among the conclusions reached in the present study, it may be pointed out that the initiation factors of these men in prostitution are based on economic problems. As for the durability, it is concluded, according to the discourse of the interviewees, that both are anxious to change their professional activity, some almost obliged and others of their own volition. At the level of the existence or not of freedom of the body in this activity, the four claim that there are, however, to increase the percentage of profit ignore part of its principles. The interviewees' understanding of male prostitution and what is "being a prostitute" is also made known, introducing specific terms for self-naming with the appropriate characteristics difference between names.

Abstract:
This study aims for a deeper understanding in how the community school of music and art will develop in the future. I would like to decide which factors influence the development of the community school of music and art, and how the school chooses to approach these factors. Four instrumental teachers and three music leaders have been interviewed. The results indicate factors that influence the expectations of the community school of music and art, of which the most prominent are media, musical trends, social factors and the student’s expectations on the education. These factors exert influence on the community school of music and art, both as an organization and as a productive activity, as well as the education. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the community school of music and art must approach students with new views, on what it means to play and learn an instrument. The teachers point out that the students seldom understand that it is necessary to practice to learn how to play their instruments. The result also shows that management at3the community school of music and art is working to create a more expansive business, which will continue into the future. One conclusion of the study, is that the community school of music and art of today, needs to have a wide productive activity in regard to meeting the students’ need concerning instruments, repertoires and education. Another conclusion is that the basic ambition to educate people in music, has given way to provide all children a possibility to develop through music.

McKean, Vanessa. "The role of expectations and visions of the future in the development of target-based environmental policies : the case of the UK Air Quality Strategy." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/58039/.

Abstract:
Increasingly, policy-makers rely on forecasts to set targets for environmental and health protection. I examine the UK Air Quality Strategies (AQS) for particulate matter (1997-2007). Here policy-makers select and articulate visions for technological and policy developments in order to set targets and policies to achieve them. Despite growing evidence for adverse health effects of particulates, challenging targets in 1997 were followed by two revisions of Objectives without introducing measures for reducing pollution. In 2007 more challenging targets were resumed. This thesis is a study of the formation and evolution of a policy framework: of the interactions and contrasting roles of scientific expertise, wider political discourse, and the ‘futures' presented by actors involved in the policy process. Sociology of Expectations has previously examined the roles of visions in innovation processes. I extended this framework to examine dynamics of visions in the policy-making process. My findings were based on analysis of visions and discourses identified in texts, model data, and interviews. Whilst none of the explanatory factors alone accounted the developments in the AQS, together they provide an explanation of change which highlights the role of learning by policy-makers . Visions for technological development articulated in each version of the AQS were in line with the dominant visions articulated in central government, but over time policy-makers responsible for the Strategy used them to present options for taking action on pollution. Co-construction of the AQS and modelled forecasts enabled policy-makers responsible for the Strategy to articulate visions for technologies and policies to promote taking action to reduce pollutants, and this led to the more action-oriented Strategy in 2007. This thesis proposes that visions can change more quickly than wider political discourses, and as such can provide opportunities for the introduction of new discourses.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts: the first examines the Expectations Hypothesis of the Term Structure for New Zealand, and the latter examines the predictive power of the term spread on future economic activity in New Zealand. For both parts, I divide the sample period into two sub-sample periods – the pre-OCR period and the OCR period. Using Mankiw & Miron’s (1986) approach for testing the expectations hypothesis, the findings in this paper suggest that the theory is consistent with New Zealand data during the OCR period. I attribute the success of the theory to the introduction of the Official Cash Rate system in March 1999. The change from targeting the settlement cash balance to targeting an interest rate variable has substantially improved the predictability of short-term interest rates. In regards to the predictive power of the spread, the findings in this paper support the conventional view that the spread is positively related to future economic activity. Using Hamilton & Kim’s (2002) approach, I decomposed the term spread into an expectation component and a term premium in an attempt to find out whether these two variables have distinctly separate effect on future economic activity. My findings are in contrast to that reported by Hamilton & Kim. In particular, I find that the term premium in some cases is significant and negatively related to future economic activity in New Zealand. I attribute the negative relationship to lower long-term interest rates and a fallen term premium in New Zealand.

Abstract:
People are becoming more digital today, and are spending the majority of their time behindscreens. Because of this, the importance to socialize have become more prominent. In thisdigital era, more businesses are establishing online. A structural reformation in the retailmarket is inevitable. One of the reasons for this is the competition which comes frominternational competitor. Consumers can click home goods directly from internationallow-cost production actors. With this change, it has become harder for physical retailbusiness to become profitable. Even though the online retail market is blooming, there is stilla need for physical spaces in Stockholm, and this is because of webrooming and Halo effects. In combination to this, retailers desire fewer and smaller spaces. Further, the effectse-commerce has on physical retail have altered the way real estate owners establish theirspaces. Several real estate owners convert retail stores into food and beverage (F&B). TheF&B sector has become more important and prominent today because of its importance ofcreating a meeting place in today’s society. Due to this, the F&B market is saturated causingcannibalization between actors. The aim of this study is to explore and interpret qualitative data, based on interviews withbranch experts from real estate owners and consultants, retailers, researchers and F&B actors.Considering, if the online retail market affects the F&B market in Stockholm CBD. What willbe the future for physical retail and F&B spaces, based on the change in consumer behaviour? What is the relation between the expanding online market and the conversion from retail toF&B? What will happen when the market is saturated and how will the future meeting placebe established? The thesis will also be based on a case study of Sergelstan, a developmentproject in Stockholm CBD, owned and established by Vasakronan. The conclusion of the research is that e-commerce has an indirect impact on the F&B sector, based on direct effect from retail. The physical retail sector creates vacancy due to a changedconsumer behaviour, which enables other sectors to grow. Due to the importance of ameeting place for society, real estate owners have almost doubled their F&B supply in theCBD of Stockholm.

Abstract:

To be able to adopt, the future adoptive parents must participate in parental education and have a home investigation done. The home investigation is extensive and great demands are made on the parents. The purpose with this study was to get an insight and understanding in the parents’ thoughts and feelings about the demands and expectations that are made on them during an international adoption. To answer this, we used these questions: Which demands and expectations are made on the future adoptive parents by the home investigator and the parental educator? How do the future adoptive parents experience the demands and expectations that are made on them before an adoption? Does the apprehension about the demands and expectations differ between the future adoptive parents and the home investigator contrary the parental educator? We used a qualitative method, interviewing four couples of parents, one home investigator and one parental educator. The result showed that there are both similarities and differences in the respondents’ apprehensions about the demands and expectations.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Economia Monetária e Financeira
It's usually accepted that financial asset prices reflect market participants' expectations concerning the evolution of certain important economic and financial variables. In comparison with the majority of the other financial assets, in particular against the futures or forwards, option prices have an additional interest resulting from their ability to provide information, not only in terms of the expected future value of an asset, but also about the higher moments of the probability distribution perceived by economic agents. Regarding the relationship among option prices and their strike prices it's possible to estimate the risk-neutral probability density function (RNPDF), which allow us to characterise almost completely, market expectations regarding the price of the underlying asset at the maturity date of the option. In the Black-Sholes framework, RNPDF estimation would be a trivial issue only consisting in implied volatility estimation. However, the systematic differences observed between theoretical model prices and those observed in the market, raise some suspicions about the reality adjustment of some of its premises, namely the lognormality for the underlying price distribution and the constant volatility assumed across the time and different strike prices. In this work, a set of alternative approaches for the RNPDF estimation is presented, along with its advantages and drawbacks, as a way to characterise the current state of the art. Using EURIBOR 3-month interest rate future option prices, and considering a mixture of lognormal distributions, we estimate RNPDF for some days around ECB Council meetings, in order to analyse market views about possible changes in ECB reference interest rates in these meetings. We also study the impact in market expectations, regarding the evolution of shorter-term interest rates, from the events that occurred in the USA on the 11th of September 2001, and the "time-to-maturity" effect on RNPDF volatility.

Abstract:
This work tests the validity of Expectations Hypothesis (EH), which posts that the long-term rates are an average of future expectations of short-term rates. The study is based on two internationally recognized papers: Fama e Bliss (1987) and Cochrane e Piazzesi (2005). The tests are performed using monthly observations on excess returns and forward rates for 2 to 5 year bonds. The data consists in monthly observations of ID future contracts yields. The results suggest rejection the EH for the Brazilian case. A linear combination of forward rates is able to explain excess returns variation with R² up to 0.63 for 2-year bonds.

Goodman, Brenda K. "Expression of an Expectation of a Future Desire to Move by Older Community-Dwelling Adults." VCU Scholars Compass, 1990. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4688.

Full text
Abstract:
Empirical evidence in the gerontological literature supports the commonly held belief that older adults, overwhelmingly, prefer to remain in their own homes. Despite this fact, older adults residing in the community often express an expectation that they will move in the future. There is a paucity of empirical findings on those factors which are most influential on the expression of an expectation of a future desire to move. Logistic regression was used to analyze data from the third wave of a longitudinal study of elderly Massachusetts residents residing in the community to identify possible antecedents to the expression of an expectation of a future desire to move. The perception that income was not adequate to meet expenses decreased the likelihood of expressing an expectation of a future desire to move for all respondents and for those with children in the area. A living arrangement which was other than alone or with a spouse only was significantly related to the expression of an expectation of a future desire to move for all respondents and for those without children in the area. Positive self-perceived health was found to increase the likelihood that an expectation of a future desire to move would be expressed. A knowledge of the most important factors which contribute to the decision of an older community-dwelling adult to move from their comfortable, familiar surroundings should facilitate the implementation of programs and services which would obviate the need for some unnecessary moves and, consequently, make it possible for them to enjoy a wholesome life in the community for as long as possible.
