There is a total of more than 9700 convenient stores in Taiwan. In Taipei, the capital of the country, there is 1 convenient store in every 400 meters, which is equivalent to one convenient store in every 5 minutes. This thesis aims to explore the possibility of optimizing the notion of convenience, in its provision of amenity and services, to facilitate innovations at the individual level while fostering a culture of do-it-together as a collaborative knowledge-based community. Unlike US where innovators can make and prototype in their own garages, people in Taipei do not have a physical space to prototype without paying the high cost of renting an office or workspace, not to mention the lack of equipment and facilities. This thesis examines how can one translate the success behind the business model of highly distributed convenience store into the paradigm for fostering innovations at individual level. The thesis began with a thorough study of 7-Eleven to try to understand its recipe of success. Throughout its 34 years of history in Taiwan, 7-Eleven serves as the paradigm of its typology and constantly innovates its services and products to address the daily needs of the common individuals. This thesis will demonstrate that 7-Eleven is ready to take on a greater challenge, a challenge that aims to serve the individuals with all the amenities and services needed to become an entrepreneurial innovator by rebranding itself into a new identity - the 24x7 Make Mart. The newly re-branded 24x7 Make Mart will not only transform the physical space of 7-Eleven's current typologies, but also prototype a new architectural typologies emerged from the synergy of conventional 7-Eleven strategies and innovative programs. The 24x7 Make Mart adopts the current distributed model of 7-Eleven and provides 3 layers of megafloors that can be programmed into different uses, including individual workstation, self-storage, event space, exhibition, workshop/ classroom, fabrication labs, meeting rooms, etc, and everything is rentable at an affordable price to the public. The experimental implementation of 24x7 Make Mart will be highly distributed in the urban setting of Taipei and searchable by a corresponding mobile APP called Where is my 24x7 Make Mart?.

Lima, Mariana Sá. "Will men in Portugal wear make-up in the future?" Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/10328.
Full textThis work project aims to: 1) Explore weather men in Portugal will wear make up in the future; 2) Analyze changes in male grooming from the beginning of the 1900´s until the present time. 3) Analyze how cosmetic brands are branding to men. In order to be able to answer the questions above, secondary data was collected in the form of consumer studies and research, newspaper articles and other literary material. Since this market is still in a developing stage. It was very difficult to obtain academic papers on the subject of male make up. Then, in order to obtain primary data, it was therefore essential to conduct exploratory research. This research is the essence of the work project as it enabled me to have a privileged and detailed outlook on male attitudes towards make-up and grooming products in general, regarding the Portuguese market. In order to do this, I carried out in depth interviews as part of my exploratory research and concluded that although men in Portugal have gone a long way in the grooming process, especially in the last few years they are still very negative towards the idea of wearing make-up. Considering this, cosmetic companies should therefore be alert to this potential market and analyze it thoroughly before introducing male make-up products in the Portuguese market.

Full textThe objective of the study was to validate the assumption that respondents who self-identified as white, were more likely to be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO Plan and underutilize health care services when compared to their non-white counterparts.
The results showed that the majority of the respondents in the stratified population of Medicare eligible respondents were categorized as White, 11,271 out of 15,297, and 42% reported being enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO Plan. A total of 3,685 of the White respondents on Medicare Advantage HMO Plans indicated they were in "Good" or better health, which was 78% of all White respondents in this population. The mean number of times that White respondents were seen by an MD (Figure 2) fell within the same range of 5-6 times for the majority of the Race/Ethnic groups. The mean number of hospital stays for Whites and the other Race/Ethnic groups ranged from 1.86-1.92 within the same 12 month period, with the exception of Pacific Islanders.
Gonzalez, Jorge. "The Removal of Maher Arar and Lessons Learned for Future Engagement Between the United States and Canada." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/17372.
Full textSince the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States and Canada have engaged at the highest levels of government to integrate immigration and law enforcement policies and achieve common homeland security benefits. This engagement demonstrates agreement across political parties in both countries on those areas and objectives critical to increasing North American security. Over the same period of time, the removal by the United States of Canadian citizen Maher Ararbased in part on derogatory information provided by Canadian law enforcementillustrates vividly the complexity, sensitivity and necessity of informal collaboration between agencies in both countries. This thesis presents a case study of the removal of Mr. Arar in order to suggest strategies that policymakers in both countries may adopt in order to achieve greater progress toward the objectives identified during bilateral engagement over the past decade. This thesis relies on the unclassified results of official inquiries in the United States and Canada as well as the record developed by related litigation in both countries, and concludes that this incident itself continues to prevent further integration between the United States and Canada and should be addressed squarely to achieve greater progress toward bilateral security objectives.

Gabier, Hawwa. "Development of microsatellite (SSR) marker multiplexes for future construction of a genetic linkage map for pear (Pyrus communis L.)." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4013.
Full textRecent advances in the field of plant genetics and application of molecular technologies has lead to greater understanding of various crop genomes and their organization. The applications of these techniques include molecular markers which have been used to examine DNA variation within crop species. This allows for the creation of further genetic variation for new and favourable traits.Molecular markers or DNA markers are short fragments of DNA that can be used to locate desirable genetic traits in the genome or show specific genetic differences. The Maloideae subfamily includes fruit species such as pear. Pears (Pyrus communis L.) are large edible fruit that are grown in cool climates, native to coastal regions in Africa, Asia and Europe. The external appearance of this fruit plays a vital role on its rate of sale potential. Thus it is important for the appearances of the pear to meet the expectations of the consumer.External factors affecting the appearance of fruit, such as shape and colour, can have a large influence on the consumer’s first impression and opinion of what the fruit may taste like(Jaeger and MacFie, et al., 2001). The South African pear industry is the fourth largest in the fruit industry after apple, citrus and grape, exporting 3.8% to Europe (Ferrandi, et al., 2005).Increase in production and export of the pear is dependant on the variety of cultivars with desired traits. New cultivars, especially ranges of new cultivars, with harvest dates from early to late in the season, can fill gaps in the marketing strategy of exporters and in the local markets (Human, et al., 2005) Therefore, development of molecular markers allows for their possible use in maker-assisted selection and for the construction of a genetic linkage map thus leading to the location of favourable traits and ultimately the improvement of the quality of the pear.In this study high throughput genomic DNA extractions were performed. The Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) method was employed as the results proved to be most promising. Furthermore the screenings of molecular markers were conducted in order to obtain DNA variation. Molecular markers were used to locate specific genetic differences.Multiplexing PCR was conducted using fluorescent primers for further screening and results proved to be useful as many variations could be observed.

Upon a closer examination of the role and performance of the International Court of Justice, we find that it does primarily fulfil its role and obligation as far as the UN charter and the Courts stature are concerned. It is upon the application of Kjell Goldmann’s Internationalists Programme that we find ourselves wanting more from the Court.
If we assume the development of international institutions, exchange, communication and the like to be desirable and necessary for the continued development of international peace and security, the ICJ can be shown to have had historical opportunities to affect the development to such an effect, but lacks the formal means to do so.
With the subscription to the internationalists programme, we find that there are plenty of potential improvements that could reasonably be made. These are primarily about the official influence of the Court, with regards to cases relevant to it and its jurisdiction, which is severely crippled by current regulatory framework. This is a condition shared with plenty of other international courts in their various forms.
Essentially, the current state of the ICJ lacks the desirable attributes and possibilities to influence the development of international law to any meaningful extent. If we indeed were to look for an international court with the means to build international legal institutions and seek to further enforce international peace and security, the ICJ is not what we are looking for.

Full textNeoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC i.e. chemotherapy before surgery) is increasingly being used for aggressive or locally advanced breast cancer (BCs). Beyond clinical benefits, it represents an opportunity to monitor in vivo sensitivity to treatment. Based on the analysis of datasets of BCs patients treated with NAC, we aimed at identifying mechanisms associated with resistance or sensitivity to treatment. In the first part, we evaluated biological, clinical, pathological and transcriptomic patterns. We demonstrated that unexplored pathological features such as post-NAC lymphovascular invasion may carried an important prognostic information. In a second part, we analyzed impact of imune infiltration in BC and we described extensively the changes of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) between pre and post-NAC samples. We showed that the prognostic impact of TILs was different before and after NAC, and was opposite in TNBC and HER2-positive BCs. Finally, we investigated the impact of comedications use during NAC. We found both positive effects - while enhancing immune infiltration and response to treatment - and negative effects with deleterisous oncologic outcomes in specific patients subgroups. In conclusion, the neoadjuvant setting represents a platform to both generate and potentially validate research hypotheses aiming at increasing the efficacy of treatment. The public release of real-life datasets of BC patients treated with NAC would represent a major resource to accelerate BC research

Many traders participate in the Taiwan futures market and each trader can choose his/her order type between limit order and market order. This study divides traders into eight groups. This study investigates how these order types influence the payoff of different traders in Taiwan futures market from March 27, 2006 to July 31, 2008 (contract date from April, 2006 to June, 2009). Wilcoxon rank-sum test is conducted among different order type’s payoff for every group. The empirical results show that different order types lead to different payoffs and we infer the reasons are: (1) information asymmetry and (2) overconfidence. Results also show that information plays an important role on trader’s payoff; however, overconfidence has a negative impact on trader’s payoff. The main contribution of this study is to give investors a lesson for making order-type decisions.
