Greenfield, Sarah. "Type-2 fuzzy logic : circumventing the defuzzification bottleneck." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/7088.

Full text
Abstract:
Type-2 fuzzy inferencing for generalised, discretised type-2 fuzzy sets has been impeded by the computational complexity of the defuzzification stage of the fuzzy inferencing system. Indeed this stage is so complex computationally that it has come to be known as the defuzzification bottleneck. The computational complexity derives from the enormous number of embedded sets that have to be individually processed in order to effect defuzzification. Two new approaches to type-2 defuzzification are presented, the sampling method and the Greenfield-Chiclana Collapsing Defuzzifier. The sampling method and its variant, elite sampling, are techniques for the defuzzification of generalised type-2 fuzzy sets. In these methods a relatively small sample of the totality of embedded sets is randomly selected and processed. The small sample size drastically reduces the computational complexity of the defuzzification process, so that it may be speedily accomplished. The Greenfield-Chiclana Collapsing Defuzzifier relies upon the concept of the representative embedded set, which is an embedded set having the same defuzzified value as the type-2 fuzzy set that is to be defuzzified. By a process termed collapsing the type-2 fuzzy set is converted into a type-1 fuzzy set which, as an approximation to the representative embedded set, is known as the representative embedded set approximation. This type-1 fuzzy set is easily defuzzified to give the defuzzified value of the original type-2 fuzzy set. By this method the computational complexity of type-2 defuzzification is reduced enormously, since the representative embedded set approximation replaces the entire collection of embedded sets. The strategy was conceived as a generalised method, but so far only the interval version has been derived mathematically. The grid method of discretisation for type-2 fuzzy sets is also introduced in this thesis. Work on the defuzzification of type-2 fuzzy sets began around the turn of the millennium. Since that time a number of investigators have contributed methods in this area. These different approaches are surveyed, and the major methods implemented in code prior to their experimental evaluation. In these comparative experiments the grid method of defuzzification is employed. The experimental results show beyond doubt that the collapsing method performs the best of the interval alternatives. However, though the sampling method performs well experimentally, the results do not demonstrate it to be the best performing generalised technique.

Abstract:
The GUHA method is one of the oldest methods of exploratory data analysis, which is regarded as part of the data mining or knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) scienti_c area. Unlike many other methods of data mining, the GUHA method has firm theoretical foundations in logic and statistics. In scope of the method, finding interesting knowledge corresponds to finding special formulas in satisfactory rich logical calculus, which is called observational calculus. The main topic of the thesis is application of the "fuzzy paradigm" to the GUHA method By the term "fuzzy paradigm" we mean approaches that use many-valued membership degrees or truth values, namely fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic. The thesis does not aim to cover all the aspects of this application, it emphasises mainly on: - Association rules as the most prevalent type of formulas mined by the GUHA method - Usage of fuzzy data - Logical aspects of fuzzy association rules mining - Comparison of the GUHA theory to the mainstream fuzzy association rules - Implementation of the theory using the bit string approach The thesis throughoutly elaborates the theory of fuzzy association rules, both using the theoretical apparatus of fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy set theory is used mainly to compare the GUHA method to existing mainstream approaches to formalize fuzzy association rules, which were studied in detail. Fuzzy logic is used to define novel class of logical calculi called logical calculi of fuzzy association rules (LCFAR) for logical representation of fuzzy association rules. The problem of existence of deduction rules in LCFAR is dealt in depth. Suitable part of the proposed theory is implemented in the Ferda system using the bit string approach. In the approach, characteristics of examined objects are represented as strings of bits, which in the crisp case enables efficient computation. In order to maintain this feature also in the fuzzy case, a profound low level testing of data structures and algoritms for fuzzy bit strings have been carried out as a part of the thesis.

Abstract:
Sailboat navigation started as a way to explore the world. Even though performance is significantly lower than that of a motorboat, in terms of resources, these vessels still are the best low-cost solutions. On the past, navigation depended greatly on estimates or on the stars. Nowadays it depends on precise data provided by a variety of electronic devices, independent from the user’s location. Autonomous sailboats are vessels that use only the wind for propulsion and have the capacity to control its sails and rudders without human intervention. These particularities give them almost unlimited autonomy and a very valuable ability to fulfill long term missions on the sea, such as collecting oceanographic data, search and rescue or surveillance. This dissertation presents a fuzzy logic controller for autonomous sailboats based on a proposed set of sensors, namely a GPS receiver, a weather meter and an electronic compass. Following a basic navigation approach, the proposed set of sensorswas studied in order to obtain an effective group of variables for the controller’s fuzzy sets, and rules for its rule base. In the end, four fuzzy logic controllers were designed, one for the sail(to maximize speed) and three for the rudder (in order to comply with all navigation situations). The result is a sailboat control system capable of operation in a low cost platform such as an Arduino prototyping board. Simulated results obtained from a data set of approximately 100 tests to each controller back up the theory presented for the controller’s operation, since physical experimentation was not possible.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the definition of a flexible approach for querying both crisp and fuzzy RDF graphs. This approach, based on the theory of fuzzy sets, makes it possible to extend SPARQL which is the W3C-standardised query language for RDF, so as to be able to express i) fuzzy user preferences on data (e.g., the release year of an album is recent) and on the structure of the data graph (e.g., the path between two friends is required to be short) and ii) more complex user preferences, namely, fuzzy quantified statements (e.g., most of the albums that are recommended by an artist, are highly rated and have been created by a young friend of this artist). We performed some experiments in order to study the performances of this approach. The main objective of these experiments was to show that the extra cost due to the introduction of fuzziness remains limited/acceptable. We also investigated, in a more general framework, namely graph databases, the issue of integrating the same type of fuzzy quantified statements in a fuzzy extension of Cypher which is a declarative language for querying (crisp) graph databases. Some experimental results are reported and show that the extra cost induced by the fuzzy quantified nature of the queries also remains very limited

Otero, Angel Rafael. "An Information Security Control Assessment Methodology for Organizations." NSUWorks, 2014. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/266.

Full text
Abstract:
In an era where use and dependence of information systems is significantly high, the threat of incidents related to information security that could jeopardize the information held by organizations is more and more serious. Alarming facts within the literature point to inadequacies in information security practices, particularly the evaluation of information security controls in organizations. Research efforts have resulted in various methodologies developed to deal with the information security controls assessment problem. A closer look at these traditional methodologies highlights various weaknesses that can prevent an effective information security controls assessment in organizations. This dissertation develops a methodology that addresses such weaknesses when evaluating information security controls in organizations. The methodology, created using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox of MATLAB based on fuzzy theory and fuzzy logic, uses fuzzy set theory which allows for a more accurate assessment of imprecise criteria than traditional methodologies. It is argued and evidenced that evaluating information security controls using fuzzy set theory addresses existing weaknesses found in the literature for traditional evaluation methodologies and, thus, leads to a more thorough and precise assessment. This, in turn, results in a more effective selection of information security controls and enhanced information security in organizations. The main contribution of this research to the information security literature is the development of a fuzzy set theory-based assessment methodology that provides for a thorough evaluation of ISC in organizations. The methodology just created addresses the weaknesses or limitations identified in existing information security control assessment methodologies, resulting in an enhanced information security in organizations. The methodology can also be implemented in a spreadsheet or software tool, and promote usage in practical scenarios where highly complex methodologies for ISC selection are impractical. Moreover, the methodology fuses multiple evaluation criteria to provide a holistic view of the overall quality of information security controls, and it is easily extended to include additional evaluation criteria factor not considered within this dissertation. This is one of the most meaningful contributions from this dissertation. Finally, the methodology provides a mechanism to evaluate the quality of information security controls in various domains. Overall, the methodology presented in this dissertation proved to be a feasible technique for evaluating information security controls in organizations.

In this study, the full Streeter-Phelps equations, using the Fuzzy set Theory, was applied, in order to analyze the risk of contamination of a watercourse that receives multiple sources release pollutants. Through the model simulations, different scenarios were analyzed, and the influence of its parameters as well as the launch point and nonpoint pollution sources, in the calculation of the risk. According to the results, it was observed that the amount of discharge released influences the time of the mass dilution in the system, so that for higher values of launch, the dilution time is less favoring the formation and decay processes of benthic layer; regarding the physical, chemical and biological reactions, it appears that sedimentation processes, photosynthesis and respiration, concerning with the average data found in literature, have little influence on the behavior of the curves of DO concentration curves and risk, while the nitrification process has a strong influence; with respect to the temperature, the results showed that it plays a significant role in the behavior of DO, where, for larger values of it, the higher the DO deficit and, consequently, increase in the risk. Finally, the model developed as a proposal to facilitate the decision making in the control of discharge of effluents into rivers proved to be a viable and practical analytical alternative way, since the goals were achieved.

Abstract:
To be successful in today's competitive market, service providers should look at user's satisfaction as a critical key. In order to gain a better understanding of customers' expectations, a proper evaluations which considers intrinsic characteristics of perceived quality of service is needed. Due to the subjective nature of quality, the vagueness of human judgment and the uncertainty about the degree of users' linguistic satisfaction, fuzziness is associated with quality of experience. Considering the capability of Fuzzy logic in dealing with imprecision and qualitative knowledge, it would be wise to apply it as a powerful mathematical tool for analyzing the quality of experience (QoE). This thesis proposes a fuzzy procedure to evaluate the quality of experience. In our proposed methodology, we provide a fuzzy relationship between QoE and Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. To identify this fuzzy relationship a new term called Fuzzi ed Opinion Score (FOS) representing a fuzzy quality scale is introduced. A fuzzy data mining method is applied to construct the required number of fuzzy sets. Then, the appropriate membership functions describing fuzzy sets are modeled and compared with each other. The proposed methodology will assist service providers for better decision-making and resource management.

Abstract: An early accurate estimation of agricultural crop areas, such as soybean, is fundamental for the Brazilian economy. The draining forecast and the estimation of agricultural production commercialization are strategic to Brazil, since they are directly related to planning, costs and price. Recent technological progress of data acquisition from orbital remote sensing makes possible to improve harvest forecast, reducing more and more the level of subjectivity. Although designed for meteorological aims, the AVHRR-NOAA images of high temporal resolution, have been used for the crop monitoring. However, its low spatial resolution might cause the spectral mixture of the different land cover classes within the same pixel and it can lead to accuracy problems on crop area estimation. The main objective of the work was to develop an automatic classification methodology with the application of fuzzy logic for pattern recognition in AVHRR-NOAA images, using vegetation indices to estimate the soybean crop areas at sub-pixel level. For eight soybean producer counties in the West region of the Paraná State, it was possible to obtain the crop area estimation at the end of january 2004, prior to the harvest period, on the contrary of the official surveys that extend until the end of the harvest, besides using subjective data collected on the field. The soybean crop area estimation based on fuzzy classification showed to be highly correlated with the reference area estimation obtained from the soybean mask and by direct expansion, being an indicative of good accuracy. And also presented high correlation, marked out with the official estimations from SEAB/DERAL and IBGE. In both comparisons, the level of general relative error was acceptable. The system developed for processing and products generation of AVHRR-NOAA images had proved to be a fundamental infrastructure tool, due to its capacity to combine automation and accuracy to the work methodology
Mestrado
Planejamento e Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável
Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

Abstract:
Cost overruns in power plant projects frequently occur, and this very alarming phenomenon requires proper risk assessment and management in the early phase of power plant project development. A modified fuzzy group decision-making approach (FGDMA) was developed and the critical risks in different phases of thermal power plant project were identified. Further, a novel fuzzy canonical model (FCM) was developed and the complex causal risk-networks were modelled to understand the root causes of cost overruns. The benefits of this research to practitioners are such that it provides greater understanding of the risks involved in power plant projects and sound analytical methods to asses the risks.

Abstract:
Concept Maps (CMs) are considered a well-known pedagogy technique in creating curriculum, educating, teaching, and learning. Determining comprehension of concepts result from comparisons of candidate CMs against a master CM, and evaluate "goodness". Past techniques for comparing CMs have revolved around the creation of a subjective rubric. We propose a novel CM scoring scheme called MAnanA based on a Fuzzy Similarity Scaling (FSS) score to vastly remove the subjectivity of the rubrics in the process of grading a CM. We evaluate our framework against a predefined rubric and test it with CM data collected from the Introduction to Computer Security course at the University of New Orleans (UNO), and found that the scores obtained via MAnanA captured the trend that we observed from the rubric via peak matching. Based on our evaluation, we believe that our framework can be used to objectify CM analysis.

Abstract:
Fishing is a significant source of food, and constitutes an important source of income in Turkey. Due to the large extent required to analyse the distribution of fish stocks, information derived from satellites play an important role in fisheries applications. Chlorophyll concentration and sea surface temperature (SST) are the most significant parameters which define the fish habitat. The accuracy of these parameters in the Black Sea taken from two different satellites, namely Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-views Sensor (SeaWIFS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are evaluated. Results indicate that both satellites give good estimates of SST but the algorithms overestimate the chlorophyll concentration values. MODIS products are used in the subsequent analyses due to their high correlation with in-situ measurements relative to SeaWIFS products. The cause of the overestimation of chlorophyll concentration is further examined and a general description of environmental variability in Black Sea is done using MODIS products. Anchovy, the most important commercial fish in Turkey, has been selected as the target specie of the study. Level 3 weekly average MODIS chlorophyll and SST products are processed using remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) integration to estimate potential favorable zones for pelagic fish aggregations. Two different decision rules are employed to generate fish stock maps, simple additive weigthing (SAW) and fuzzy additive weigthing (FSAW). The resultant maps are used to visualize the general distribution of Anchovy in Turkish Seas from May 2000 to May 2001. The resultant thematic fish stock maps generated by FSAW analysis represents the uncertainity in the environment better than the ones generated by SAW analysis.

Abstract:
This Dissertation examines the implementation of a mechanism to analyze and act on multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) with the use of cognitive features applied to the network nodes. For this purpose, a variation detection algorithm was proposed for monitoring sensor nodes, involving the node\'s mobility features, signal range of the sensor antenna, the number of nodes in the network and the number of possible connections to neighboring nodes. In addition to the detection algorithm, a multi-layer system is proposed, named Adaptive Cognitive System (ACS). It is based on Cognitive Networks (CN) architecture, including data gathering, information treatment and decision making. The main part of the system is the Cognitive Processor Module (CPMod), which extracts the information about the WSN. In turn the Fuzzy Logic block works in tandem with the semantic engine to feed the codes to CPMod in the decision making process. The codes are the result of analysis performed on rounds using fuzzification and defuzzification membership functions, fuzzy rules and inference over information collected from the network. It was observed in tests performed in the WSN, using the detection algorithm, that the variability in sensor nodes directly affects the network performance due to the effort spent in rerounting links and paths. Through WSN testing performed via software, it was found that using the ACS implies in significant improvement in performance over the end-to-end delay, network latency, dropped packets and amount of energy consumed by nodes on the network. The ACS potential is proven for solving problems related to the previously mentioned metrics, performing adjustments on multiple network layers standardized by IEEE 802.15.4 up to 200 nodes in the network.

Abstract:
The oceans’ exploration becomes more and more reachable, especially thanks to robotics progress. Applications for underwater robots are plentiful. In this thesis, we particularly focus on the search of wrecks, as the Cordelière, which sank in the Bay of Brest (France) in 1512. The proposed robotic system consists of towing a magnetometer likely to detect the ferromagnetic materials of the wreck. The sensor cannot be directly embedded because it is sensitive to the perturbations from the robot. This is why it is deported. Two issues are studied to approach this system. The first one is linked to the control of the magnetometer’s position, whereas we can only act on the towing robot. A feedback linearization method is used to design a controller. Then, this controller is validated under some state constraints by using tools from interval analysis. The second issue relates to underwater localization in a reliable manner. Ways to approach uncertainties and outliers gathered by acoustic sensors are studied. The interval analysis allows to obtain first results, and the fuzzy logic completes the approach by giving more suppleness in the prioritization of the constraints. Finally, some expérimentations are presented with different robots, and especially the localization of a ROV in a pool

Abstract:
This work presents an alternative sensorless vector control of induction motors. Several techniques for induction motor control have been proposed in the literature. Among these is the field oriented control (FOC), strongly used in industries and also in this work. The main drawback of the FOC technique is its sensibility to deviations of the parameters of the machine, which can deteriorate the control actions. Therefore, an accurate determination of the machines parameters is mandatory to the drive system. This work proposes the development of an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) estimator to control the angular speed of a three-phase induction motor in a sensorless drive. In a closed loop configuration, several speed commands can be imposed to the motor. Thus, a new frequency partition training of ANFIS is proposed. Moreover, the ANFIS speed estimator is validated in a magnetizing flux oriented control scheme. Simulations to evaluate the performance of the estimator considering the vector drive system were done by the Matlab/Simulink. To determine the benefits of the proposed model a practical system was implemented using a voltage source inverter (VSI) and the vector control including the ANFIS estimator, carried out by the Real Time Toolbox from Matlab/Simulink and a data acquisition card from National Instruments.

Abstract:
In this master thesis we present a new relay selection algorithm using fuzzy logic. The proposed algorithm is distributed, runs independently at each node, not requiring a central entity for coordination, and is multi-objective, since it aims to maximize both network lifetime and end-to-end throughput. The new method takes into account the instantaneous channel state of the relay-destination link and the residual energy of the node battery. As a result, the algorithm assigns a degree of relevance to each relay, such that the with a higher relevance is chosen to forward the source message. Results show that a considerable increase in the network lifetime can be obtained without compromising the end-to-end throughput.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes a fuzzy call admission control method (FCAC) and a fuzzy flow control method (FFC) for multi-class traffic. Two methods should be used on the air interface of 3G UMTS networks. The FCAC method accepts or rejects a new call evaluating the priority of the input traffic class and the total effective bandwidth available at the air interface. Due to inherited fuzzy characteristics the proposed FCAC-FFC can be considered as a soft-blocking approach. The calls with lowest priority are blocked first whenever the currently available bandwidth is not large enough. The FFC method can reduce the transmission rates of active users of lower priority if necessary and consequently increases the effective bandwidth available. Therefore, the more efficient use of system transmission resource can be achieved by increasing the average number of active users. The proposed method was implemented in MATLAB environment, and the fuzzy logic toolbox was used to design the fuzzy controllers. The simulation results show that the proposed call admission control method guarantees efficient use of the air interface resource and achieves lower call blocking probability than the CAC-FC and FCAC-FC methods
Mestrado
Telecomunicações e Telemática
Mestra em Engenharia Elétrica

However, this technological change is to reduce the complexity of the challenges posed by the need to include users with higher quality and efficiency in services. In this situation we developed a research by a method that seeks to control the pressure of the distribution systems that do not have the tank in your setup and the water comes out of the well directly to the distribution system. The method of pressure control (intelligent control) uses fuzzy logic to eliminate the waste of electricity and the leaks from the production of pumps that inject directly into the distribution system, which causes waste of energy when the consumption of households is reduced causing the saturation of the distribution system. Abstract:

Sonar, infrared and laser sensors obtain distance information. Webcams obtain digital images that are represented internally as matrices of red, blue and green (RGB) colour coordinate values. All this numerical values obtained from the environment need a later interpretation in order to provide the knowledge required by the robotic agent in order to carry out a task.

Similarly, light wavelengths with specific amplitude are captured by cone cells of human eyes obtaining also stimulus without meaning. However, the information that human beings can describe and remember from what they see is expressed using words, that is qualitatively.

The exact process carried out after our eyes perceive light wavelengths and our brain interpret them is quite unknown. However, a real fact in human cognition is that people go beyond the purely perceptual experience to classify things as members of categories and attach linguistic labels to them.

As the information provided by all the electronic components incorporated in a robotic agent is numerical, the approaches that first appeared in the literature giving an interpretation of this information followed a mathematical trend. In this thesis, this problem is addressed from the other side, its main aim is to process these numerical data in order to obtain qualitative information as human beings can do.

The research work done in this thesis tries to narrow the gap between the acquisition of low level information by robot sensors and the need of obtaining high level or qualitative information for enhancing human-machine communication and for applying logical reasoning processes based on concepts. Moreover, qualitative concepts can be added a meaning by relating them to others. They can be used for reasoning applying qualitative models that have been developed in the last twenty years for describing and interpreting metrical and mathematical concepts such as orientation, distance, velocity, acceleration, and so on. And they can be also understood by human-users both written and read aloud.

The first contributions presented are the definition of a method for obtaining fuzzy distance patterns (which include qualitative distances such as ‘near’, far’, ‘very far’ and so on) from the data obtained by any kind of distance sensors incorporated in a mobile robot and the definition of a factor to measure the dissimilarity between those fuzzy patterns. Both have been applied to the integration of the distances obtained by the sonar and laser distance sensors incorporated in a Pioneer 2 dx mobile robot and, as a result, special obstacles have been detected as ‘glass window’, ‘mirror’, and so on. Moreover, the fuzzy distance patterns provided have been also defuzzified in order to obtain a smooth robot speed and used to classify orientation reference systems into ‘open’ (it defines an open space to be explored) or ‘closed’.

The second contribution presented is the definition of a model for qualitative image description (QID) by applying the new defined models for qualitative shape and colour description and the topology model by Egenhofer and Al-Taha [1992] and the orientation models by Hernández [1991] and Freksa [1992]. This model can qualitatively describe any kind of digital image and is independent of the image segmentation method used. The QID model have been tested in two scenarios in robotics: (i) the description of digital images captured by the camera of a Pioneer 2 dx mobile robot and (ii) the description of digital images of tile mosaics taken by an industrial camera located on a platform used by a robot arm to assemble tile mosaics.

In order to provide a formal and explicit meaning to the qualitative description of the images generated, a Description Logic (DL) based ontology has been designed and presented as the third contribution. Our approach can automatically process any random image and obtain a set of DL-axioms that describe it visually and spatially. And objects included in the images are classified according to the ontology schema using a DL reasoner. Tests have been carried out using digital images captured by a webcam incorporated in a Pioneer 2 dx mobile robot. The images taken correspond to the corridors of a building at University Jaume I and objects with them have been classified into ‘walls’, ‘floor’, ‘office doors’ and ‘fire extinguishers’ under different illumination conditions and from different observer viewpoints.

The final contribution is the definition of a similarity measure between qualitative descriptions of shape, colour, topology and orientation. And the integration of those measures into the definition of a general similarity measure between two qualitative descriptions of images. These similarity measures have been applied to: (i) extract objects with similar shapes from the MPEG7 CE Shape-1 library; (ii) assemble tile mosaics by qualitative shape and colour similarity matching; (iii) compare images of tile compositions; and (iv) compare images of natural landmarks in a mobile robot world for their recognition.

The contributions made in this thesis are only a small step forward in the direction of enhancing robot knowledge acquisition from the world. And it is also written with the aim of inspiring others in their research, so that bigger contributions can be achieved in the future which can improve the life quality of our society.

Since the propagation of a signal over a wireless network is not driven, it can suffer attenuation caused by obstacles in the medium during its transfer from the transmitting equipment to the receiver, varying the signal strength of the transmission in each area covered. For this reason, in order to plan a wireless network, the characteristics of the environment and infrastructure through which the signal will travel, needs to be taken into account, so it is possible to get the real value of the received power at each required point. Furthermore, since the prediction of the signal?s attenuation in different places, taking into account the impact caused by each mentioned factor in its degradation, can be considered a complex process, it is necessary to use a model that not only considers the characteristics of the medium but also relates these factors in a simple manner allowing to measure the signal?s attenuation caused by the barriers founded in the environment. The Shadowing Signal Propagation model allows the characterization of the attenuation caused by the environment through the ? parameter present in this model. On the other hand, the Fuzzy Logic provides a form of approximate reasoning that allows the treatment of problems with incomplete, vague and imprecise information. Also, it offers a simple way to obtain a possible solution for a problem using the heuristic knowledge about a particular situation. In this way, the Fuzzy Logic can be an useful tool for calculating the ? parameter of the Shadowing Signal Propagation model, making possible to obtain ? values that characterize the attenuation of the environment in study. In this context, this work focuses on the analysis of signal?s attenuation in indoor environments using fuzzy logic.
Abstract:
This thesis introduces a novel online set-point modulation (SPM) technique that employs fuzzy logic to adjust the timing and magnitude of control system set-points. After first applying fuzzy logic-enabled SPM to underdamped second order systems for testing purposes, the new scheme is then applied to an electromagnetic transient simulation model of Manitoba Hydro’s existing Ponton SVC system, and the results are then compared to the original SVC system that uses traditional control approaches. Conclusions show that fuzzy logic-based SPM improves the controlled voltage’s transient overshoot response to changes in the voltage set-point.

Abstract:
Many concrete problems, ranging from Portfolio selection to Water resource management, may be cast into a multiobjective programming framework. The simplistic way of superseding blindly conflictual goals by one objective function let no chance to the model but to churn out meaningless outcomes. Hence interest of discussing ways for tackling Multiobjective Programming Problems. More than this, in many real-life situations, uncertainty and imprecision are in the state of affairs. In this dissertation we discuss ways for solving Multiobjective Programming Problems with fixed and fuzzy coefficients. No preference, a priori, a posteriori, interactive and metaheuristic methods are discussed for the deterministic case. As far as the fuzzy case is concerned, two approaches based respectively on possibility measures and on Embedding Theorem for fuzzy numbers are described. A case study is also carried out for the sake of illustration. We end up with some concluding remarks along with lines for further development, in this field.
Operations Research
M. Sc. Rautenbach, Helperus Ritzema. "An empirically derived system for high-speed shadow rendering." Diss., 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25867.

Abstract:
Shadows have captivated humanity since the dawn of time; with the current age being no exception – shadows are core to realism and ambience, be it to invoke a classic Baroque interplay of lights, darks and colours as the case in Rembrandt van Rijn’s Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq or to create a sense of mystery as found in film noir and expressionist cinematography. Shadows, in this traditional sense, are regions of blocked light – the combined effect of placing an object between a light source and surface. This dissertation focuses on real-time shadow generation as a subset of 3D computer graphics. Its main focus is the critical analysis of numerous real-time shadow rendering algorithms and the construction of an empirically derived system for the high-speed rendering of shadows. This critical analysis allows us to assess the relationship between shadow rendering quality and performance. It also allows for the isolation of key algorithmic weaknesses and possible bottleneck areas. Focusing on these bottleneck areas, we investigate several possibilities of improving the performance and quality of shadow rendering; both on a hardware and software level. Primary performance benefits are seen through effective culling, clipping, the use of hardware extensions and by managing the polygonal complexity and silhouette detection of shadow casting meshes. Additional performance gains are achieved by combining the depth-fail stencil shadow volume algorithm with dynamic spatial subdivision. Using this performance data gathered during the analysis of various shadow rendering algorithms, we are able to define a fuzzy logic-based expert system to control the real-time selection of shadow rendering algorithms based on environmental conditions. This system ensures the following: nearby shadows are always of high-quality, distant shadows are, under certain conditions, rendered at a lower quality and the frames per second rendering performance is always maximised.
Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2009.
Computer Science
unrestricted

Chavan, Chandrashekhar Pomu. "Design and Development of ECA based Routing Protocols for Ubiquitous Network." Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5181.

Full text
Abstract:
The ubiquitous network is a heterogeneous wireless network comprising of computing devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, PDAs, etc., are connected to any device at any time, anywhere that enabling mobile users to access and exchange information through network access technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, 5G, Bluetooth, UMTS and so on. The Ubiquitous Network (UN) fragmented into subnetworks in which mobile nodes of one subnetwork can exchange information with other mobile nodes in another subnetwork via network access technologies. The optimal route establishment is vital to exchange packets starting from the originating node to the desired destination. It is important to design and build routing protocols that play a crucial role in diverting the packets to different routes through an optimal path from the originating node to the ultimate destination. In essence, reactive and proactive routing protocols are designed and developed to determine the optimal routes for the network-wide propagation of control and data packets. The UN mobile nodes move in an arbitrary direction and frequently join or depart the UN at any point in time. Many routing-related issues have emerged due to node mobility, such as frequent network topology change, link failure, node disappearance, high latency, packet loss, etc. To provide the solution to the preceding issues, we design and develop routing protocols for the ubiquitous network using the Event Condition Action (ECA) scheme. The objectives of the thesis is to design solutions to some of the ubiquitous network routing issues. The ECA scheme is employed to make dynamic routing decisions at runtime under critical network conditions. In this thesis, we designed and developed reactive and proactive routing protocols to determine the optimal routes. The thesis consists of four major ECA-based research works viz; i) AODV route establishment and maintenance; ii) Improved AODV routing protocol; iii) Multicast group creation and selection of group leader; iv) Designing a link-state routing protocol. The ECA scheme structure is composed of three modules, like the event, condition, and action. The function of the event module is to accumulate a stream of routing events within the UN environment. The condition module’s job is to apply the logic rules that correspond to the event stream and execute the rule quickly post the conditions are met. Eventually, the action module’s task is to make dynamic routing decisions at runtime within a stipulated time. The design and development of routing protocols are present as follows. First of all, we designed AODV Route Establishment and Maintenance (AREM) to implement subroutines necessary for finding an optimal route from the originating node to the intended destination like route discovery, route setup, and route maintenance. The events like link failure or node disappearance from the network occur, then the source node nullifies the route and provokes the route investigation process once again. However, we have modified the control packet format in our proposed ECA scheme by adding metrics such as bandwidth, processor speed, buffer capacity, and battery power of the node to avoid reinitiation of the route discovery process and select an optimal path from where a route is broken. The proposed scheme discovers the shortest route based on Resourceful Mobile Nodes (RMN) that is an added advantage for rerouting the packets in a critical routing condition and making an intelligent routing decision at runtime. We estimated the time and space complexity of the developed protocol by selecting various routing functionalities. We developed a performance modeling using the M/M/1 queuing theory concept to investigate that dynamic routing decision in the UN. Dynamic routing decisions essentially depends on the expected time required for processing the ECA rules in the local memory aspect of each mobile node and the time required to process an ECA rule in the UN aspect. Secondly, we designed an Improved AODV Routing Protocol (IARP). In the IARP, we designed and implemented two improved routing protocols specifically, ECA based Improved AODV Position and Speed Aware Routing (ECA-IAODV-PSAR) and Improved AODV Edge Connectivity (ECA-IAODV-EC). In specific, these two routing protocols use the speed and position information of the node received from the Global Positioning System (GPS) to deal with routing control packet overhead during elevated mobility. The primary routing protocol ECA-IAODV-PSAR is an alteration of the PSAR routing protocol. The ECA-IAODV-PSAR protocol set limits flooding of the route query packet to the tiny zone of the UN to select the optimal route towards the ultimate destination. We calculated the time and space complexity of the developed routing protocols and built the performance modeling. Distinct performance parameters are evaluated comprised of routing control packet overhead, the number of route query packets, packet delivery ratio, normalized routing load, and latency. Thirdly, we have designed the Multicast Group Creation and Selection of Group Leader (MGCSGL), in which we have designed and implemented the ECA based Multicast Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (ECA-MAODV) routing protocol. The ECA-MAODV protocol plays a predominant role in selecting an efficient route by creating an efficient multicast tree and selecting a unique group leader using a Computational Intelligence (CI) approach. The vague set is a CI that is an enhanced fragment of a fuzzy set. Each element in the Fuzzy set is mapped to [0,1], reflecting its membership grade. We estimated ECA-MAODV’s time and spatial complexity. Besides, we assessed ECA-MAODV performance and compared it with conventional routing protocols such as MAODV and AODV. Finally, we designed a Link State Routing Protocol (LSRP) using the novel agent technology. LSRP includes two types of agents like OLSR (acts as a static agent) and MPR (acts as a mobile agent). The OLSR agent accumulates information about neighboring nodes to establish a QoS route to transmit reliable data from the source node to the intended destination. Thus, OLSR creates and dispatches MPR agents across the network. MPR agents migrate and visit every mobile node in the network hosted by an OLSR agent to accumulate and supply mobile node and network status information to the OLSR agent. The OLSR agent collates the information and provides it to the ECA scheme for selecting an intelligent ECA-QoS route. The ECA scheme employs suitable constraints on the detailed information supplied by the OLSR agent to generate the desired QoS path. Eventually, we evaluated the performance and compared ECA-QoS-OLSR with conventional OLSR routing protocols. In summary, we have designed and developed reactive and proactive routing protocols for the ubiquitous network to make runtime routing decisions using the ECA scheme. • AODV route establishment and maintenance essentially selects an optimal route in the event of the link failure and divert the packets towards the active route. • Improved AODV routing protocol emphasizes the limitation of route discovery area to the UN tiny zone to select an optimal route to the desired destination node. • Design and implementation of the ECA-MAODV routing protocol that plays a predominant role in selecting an efficient route and unique group leader for the creation of an efficient multicast tree and multicast group to communicate and share adequate information among group members more efficiently and effectively. • Designing of a link-state routing protocol that uses novel agent technology to select an intelligent QoS route starting from the originating node to the target destination for reliable transmission of data packets. • Finally, we simulated the aforementioned proposed scheme in the various scenarios by considering varying performance metrics. The results obtained in both simulation and analysis shows the significance of the approaches and the proposed scheme’s effectiveness.
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on 3D computer graphics and the continuous maximisation of rendering quality and performance. Its main focus is the critical analysis of numerous real-time rendering algorithms and the construction of an empirically derived system for the high-speed rendering of shader-based special effects, lighting effects, shadows, reflection and refraction, post-processing effects and the processing of physics. This critical analysis allows us to assess the relationship between rendering quality and performance. It also allows for the isolation of key algorithmic weaknesses and possible bottleneck areas. Using this performance data, gathered during the analysis of various rendering algorithms, we are able to define a selection engine to control the real-time cycling of rendering algorithms and special effects groupings based on environmental conditions. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, to balance Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) load for and increased speed of execution, our selection system unifies the GPU and CPU as a single computational unit for physics processing and environmental mapping. This parallel computing system enables the CPU to process cube mapping computations while the GPU can be tasked with calculations traditionally handled solely by the CPU. All analysed and benchmarked algorithms were implemented as part of a modular rendering engine. This engine offers conventional first-person perspective input control, mesh loading and support for shader model 4.0 shaders (via Microsoft’s High Level Shader Language) for effects such as high dynamic range rendering (HDR), dynamic ambient lighting, volumetric fog, specular reflections, reflective and refractive water, realistic physics, particle effects, etc. The test engine also supports the dynamic placement, movement and elimination of light sources, meshes and spatial geometry. Critical analysis was performed via scripted camera movement and object and light source additions – done not only to ensure consistent testing, but also to ease future validation and replication of results. This provided us with a scalable interactive testing environment as well as a complete solution for the rendering of computationally intensive 3D environments. As a full-fledged game engine, our rendering engine is amenable to first- and third-person shooter games, role playing games and 3D immersive environments. Evaluation criteria (identified to access the relationship between rendering quality and performance), as mentioned, allows us to effectively cycle algorithms based on empirical results and to distribute specific processing (cube mapping and physics processing) between the CPU and GPU, a unification that ensures the following: nearby effects are always of high-quality (where computational resources are available), distant effects are, under certain conditions, rendered at a lower quality and the frames per second rendering performance is always maximised. The implication of our work is clear: unifying the CPU and GPU and dynamically cycling through the most appropriate algorithms based on ever-changing environmental conditions allow for maximised rendering quality and performance and shows that it is possible to render high-quality visual effects with realism, without overburdening scarce computational resources. Immersive rendering approaches used in conjunction with AI subsystems, game networking and logic, physics processing and other special effects (such as post-processing shader effects) are immensely processor intensive and can only be successfully implemented on high-end hardware. Only by cycling and distributing algorithms based on environmental conditions and through the exploitation of algorithmic strengths can high-quality real-time special effects and highly accurate calculations become as common as texture mapping. Furthermore, in a gaming context, players often spend an inordinate amount of time fine-tuning their graphics settings to achieve the perfect balance between rendering quality and frames-per-second performance. Using this system, however, ensures that performance vs. quality is always optimised, not only for the game as a whole but also for the current scene being rendered – some scenes might, for example, require more computational power than others, resulting in noticeable slowdowns, slowdowns not experienced thanks to our system’s dynamic cycling of rendering algorithms and its proof of concept unification of the CPU and GPU.
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Computer Science
unrestricted
